Stone Stomper is really the only truly effective solution for stone chips. It will also significantly reduce dust on the back of the vehicle and front and forward sides of the van. Only negative is in heavy mud where it will accumulate mud on top of the mesh and make it hang very low and possibly drag. Another thing to note is their service and warranty support is absolutely first class. We wouldn’t tow without one.
    Great videos guys. 👍😎

The only option, the stone stomper has saved our camper trailer from a mile of stone chips from our trips over the Plenty hwy, Merinee loop rd and a trip up to the cape.

Hmm, We towed a Jayco Swan across NSW east west north south, every corner about 14 years ago. I would get an old quilt or a couple of blankets and duct tape them over the whole front of the Jayco. Duct taped the vents as well. Worked a treat but these days you can fit Stone Stomper and the like. In an emergency blanket is excellent.

Another great episode, thanks. I purchased a used off road van that had been well used offroad. The previous owners Ram 2500 only had standard rear mud flaps. The van had a vertical mesh screen with frame mounted (caravan stone guard shield)on the van drawbar. This frame had the standard short mud flaps mounted off the bottom of it. This mesh frame stopped most of the damage to the front of the van. What did happen though is the rocks went under it and badly damaged the underside of the van and water tanks. My suggestion from my experience is fit the stone guard shield to the van but change the mudflaps fitted below this and make them bigger and go to the ground. This will stop the rocks going under the van from your ranger. I would also fit big mud flaps across the back of the Ranger (rock tamers). So essentially two sets of mud flaps going across the width and to the ground, both on the van and ranger. Those nets that go horizontally from the ute to the van (stone stompers) are a waste of money. All the damage on our van is underneath the van not on the front of it.

Your historical introduction to your camping adventures was captivating. Having spent time in Australia before returning to New Zealand, I developed a profound appreciation for Australia's diverse landscape, particularly its abundance of mining ore and minerals amidst the seemingly barren and dry terrain. Australia's vastness holds a unique allure, especially coming from a country renowned for its majestic mountains, lush forests, and picturesque lakes. Witnessing a hot spring in Australia was particularly remarkable for me, given New Zealand's volcanic activity. It was a cool experience to see such natural wonders in a different context.👍

I have a Bluetti 180 as well great addition to our set up, instead of moving it around he van try plugging it into your external power input, you can then use all power points in your van, providing you dont exceed its capability, when off grid we can run the microwave, airfryer, skylink etc from the Bluetti, set up in our vehicle charging when we go for a drive.

    • @CaravanAdventureAus

    • @wwfgumby
      @wwfgumby 2 місяці тому

We just have the AC180 under the end of the bed and run a small extension leasd to the ensuite. Having it outside exposes it to the weather and possible theft. Also, the power to the van should be earthed, so unless you connect the earth point of the Bluetti to the ground, it's not ideal to plug in directly.

Extend your rear mudflaps. Buy a 90x90mm square of rubber from bunnings and extend to about 150mm from the ground. I just added to the bottom of the existing mudflap. Stops everything from hitting the van. I think stone stompers are useless if you hit mud and don't like Rock Tamers. Let me know if you want a pic and will post to your FB.

Most stone protectors work to some degree but over the years I’ve accepted that if you want to go bush, tracks, desert tracks, mud, sand then your van will take a pounding. If you want everything pristine, buy the stone protectors, stay on the black top and travel 15km on dirt every afternoon to camp site.

I have bad memories of Lara Wetlands, when refilling our tanks our caravan sank into a hole as the tap was leaking and there was a star picket in the hole. Had to use our max tracks to get out then a week later blew a tyre where the star picket had weakened the tyre. So things can go wrong anywhere! Probably should go back for new memories.

Post their van details? Would you like it if someone did that to your family? What if they have kids? What are you trying to achieve by doing that? That's an extreme reaction and could be quite dangerous. This new idea that everyone has to be named and shamed could end up getting someone killed or injured. Sounds like you would recommend bringing back the public stocks in the town square because that's what it's equivalent too. Every little interaction does not need to be posted on the internet for clicks and to titillate the viewers. How about fight your own battles and stop needing validation of others? Everyone has had to do that long before the internet was around. People would simply have a difference of opinion and then get over it. No whining on the internet so everyone would pile on. Not saying that woman was in the right at all, but to publicly shame a family online with rego numbers/van description etc could lead to you biting off more than you can chew legally. Also to someone really getting hurt. Lots of crazies out there now.

Put a heavy rubber mat e,g conveyer belt rubber, from bottom of tray to literally 2 inch of ground have it right across the entire ute and inch past outside of Ute's back wheels , a mat of 7 to 10 mm thick is heavy enough so no weights or extra brackets , use angle line and flat trap steel equal size to angle place mat between drill holes rivet or bolt together and then attach to bottom of tray deck infront of tail lights or close

One time I was camping at Taronga Falls in Victoria, and I was the only one in the whole huge campground, using my generator to power my home cinema to watch a movie before bed and some woman, (Karen), Pulled up right next to me, knocked on my door and asked me how long I was going to run my generator for? I was kind of dumbfounded by such a stupid question because it was before 9:00 o'clock, so I just said, "until I finish watching my movie and go to bed and that it's my power source"; because you can't use solar panels at night. I should have said something else, but I was polite. There's no way that you should have moved if anything you should deliberately move closer to the water just to teach Karen some tolerance and to mind her own business, but if I was a female, I guarantee she would quickly learn some manners.

A lot of people go camping to get some peace and quiet and away from people, so I’m going to take the Karen’s side on this one. I wouldn’t be happy if someone pulled right up beside me either, especially if there are lots of other spots free. Better to ask the person if they don’t mind if you park right beside them, it’s the polite thing to do.

My wife was into me about driving all the way from Hughenden to Muttaburra, dirt all the way, on the way to Winton just to see a model Muttaburrasaurus in a park which had the sprinklers on so we couldn't get to it 🤣Looks like they have done it up to be more 'touristy' these days.

100 percent agree, needs mud flaps to the ground below the stone guard, the rocks go under it and smash up the water tanks and anything else not protected. Fit big mud flaps to the ranger too. Stone stompers are a waste of money and by themselves do nothing to protect the underside of the van. A stone guard with big mudflaps will work better and be cheaper.

For a stone guard get Bryce to make a rectangle with shadecloth from sttelor stuff they use on satalite dishes and attach it to the aframenear the bottom attach the shade cloth with zip ties ortac it there with poprivets.

Wire: every traveler should have some uncoated washing line wire/cable ; not stainless steel . Can be used to tire something up --- bush repair --- can also be untwisted so the finer strands can be used for smaller jobs . Or several fine strands can be twisted together for another job ; like make an animal snare in an emergency .
If you haven't got it you will need it and if have it you will never need it
Dam at Emerald: water flowing over the spillway is an incredible sight/sound and so different to how you saw it . But it can fill very quickly with good rain in the hills behind Springsure . You made me a little "home" sick . Out west from there (over the range) is the Gods' own country ; I loved driving roadtrains through there and up further north
