I’m not an experienced elk hunter. Only taken one bull and have a few buddies who were successful too. But I hear they can soak up shots .
I do however have more moose experience. I’ve taken 4 bulls of different sizes and have seen 25-30 more moose taken by other hunters.
Most moose just hunch up or spin and stagger, vs a dead run like you can see in elk.
Thanks for testing the 308win. My favourite chambering as well as my dads . He’s taken 20 + moose with 180 grains in his 308.
308 win inside of 300 yards is plenty with an accurate gun.

I thought I would give a real world report on this setup. I have a 308 loaded with these bullets going 2775 at the muzzle. My son had a cow elk tag this year and I knew we had a chance of a longer shot that his 257 Roberts would fall short on in that scenario. We put a stalk on some cows that we found a mile off and got to 600 yards. Knowing they would soon see us in the open terrain and snow I decided to go back and grab the 308 from the truck, we slipped forward and got to 530 yards and started getting noticed. We ducked down and belly crawled to a rock pile at 500 yards. He had done a lot of target shooting this year on milk jugs at various distances and on one occasion made successful initial shots with the 308 at 475 yards. I knew with a good rest he could make a precise shot at 500. We set him up and waited for a broadside opportunity, his first shot was a little low and back and disrupted the diaphragm and exited. The cow was hit so hard she wouldn't move and ended up dropping 25 yards downhill on a stagger. I made sure to shore up his rest and he made another shot with her slightly quartered towards us and hit dead center of the "vital V" taking out the near lung, heart, and the back of the opposite lung, she dropped after taking that hit. We found that bullet under the hide on the opposite side, after cleaning it out it weighed in at 150 grains of the original 165 and looks identical to your 400 yard bullet. Consequently, at 6500' elevation it was also going just over 2100 FPS. So this water jug test simulated exactly what our vitals impact looked like at the same velocity.

Impressive! I wasn’t expecting that much expansion at longer ranges. I have 3 boxes of this but I haven’t shot any of it. Thanks for testing this.

Great video and demonstration. I’ve never hunted with accubonds and not that I haven’t had the opportunity to do it but now I’m reconsidering it for this fall. Good work.

I have been using the Nosler accubond for many years now in several different calibers from .243 up to some of the biggest mags 7mm, 300 winny, 338 win mag, 338 Lapua and the accubond is always consistent and deadly reliable , . MY humble opinion it is the best bullet on the market

Excellent results. Impressive, consistent expansion. Sure appreciate the demonstration & data for the hunting & shooting folk out there. I have to assume these are equally as accurate as the are effective on expansion. Thank you

I absolutely love the regular Accubonds, I handload for five different .300 RUM all 200 gr Accubonds even the 3200 fps loads hold together at 50 yds if need be on Moose.

I started hunting with ballistic tips in the early 90’s and started using accubonds when they came out in ‘03. Between the two I’ve shot about 20 deer, a dozen antelope, one black bear and an elk. I’ve used them in 260, 270, 308, 300 wsm, 9.3x62, and 6.5 Creedmoor. Anywhere from 35-420 yards I’ve had great results. Every time they did what they’re supposed to. They are a dependable deer bullet. I shot the black bear, which measure just a hair over 18”, with 250gr ballistic tips. I dropped it with a front quartering shot and I immediately put a second one in for good measure. When I butchered the animal I found both bullets under the skin on the far side, the core of one bullet was intact and the core of the second was about an inch in front of the jacket. They kept about 90% of their weight. The jacket alone weighed 130grains. I know the bonding helps with weight retention. I would occasionally get a core separation with the ballistic tips, it would either fall out of the jacket when I pulled it out of the animal, or it would be within an inch of the jacket in the carcass. As far as actually killing deer and antelope, I can’t tell any difference in the end result. The deer all died the same and they looked the same when they were butchered.

    200gr in a 300 Win Mag, 165gr in a .308, might I request you split the difference and run a 180 through a 30-06?

The key to achieving good penetration with the accubond in moderate velocity calibers like the 30-06 for moose is to use the 200 grain accubond . .with its fairly high G1 bc of .588
The 200 grain accubond is a solid choice for moose and elk out to 600 yds.
At that distamce It still has 1478 ft lbs of energy
And is still traveling at over 1800 fps for full expansion
With a MV of 2650 fps

The 6.8 Western shooting the same bullet is shooting 2100 FPS at 500 yards and 1400 foot pounds of energy!!! The 6.8 Western I was not impressed at first look and name and all that, after crunching numbers and coming off the .270 WSM one of my favorite rounds, Winchester updated that round the .07 diameter REALLY made the difference and believe it or not the Gun Werx can was giv8ng it better accuracy and a touch in FPS as well!!!! I was also shocked at how quiet those Gun Werx suppressors are on the 6.8 Western ir on ANY high powered rifle!!!! Im going Christensen MPR 6.8 Western and a Gun Werx can which is extremely light, or I may have to go to a Ridgeline to get the barrel length I am looking at with an AZING 1 : 7.5 TWIST MMMM HMMM!!!

Great test you guys. How many grains of Varget did you load? I'm using a similar set up this year. Just got a new rifle in .308 and waiting on a newly purchased chrono to do more testing. Right now I have 165 gr Ballistic Tips w/ 45 grains of Varget. Wondering what kind of velocities I can expect.

    • @frontlinerejects8029
      @frontlinerejects8029  2 роки тому

Depending on your barrel length, seat to depth, and ambient conditions I'd guess mid to upper 2700's. We were running 46 grains (Varget) with a CCI #200 LR Primer.
      Thanks for commenting!

I have not did expansion tests of the bullets but I have used 165 gr and 180 gr accubonds in 308, 30-06, and 300 magnum on game and my experience is the 180 has noticeably better terminal performance, on game, than the 165. Your mileage may vary. I have been waiting for you to try the 180 accubond in the 30-06, maybe you have and I have missed it. Just curious to see what your results are.
