The only bad thing about this song is that it ends 🎵❤
The reason the song is considered underrated is that the Beatles themselves buried it a bit. It appeared as a b side to the mega-hit 1967 single, "All You Need is Love." And it didn't appear on any of their contemporary albums back then. Consequently, it got very meager airplay. I only discovered it when I was at a French cafe, looking at a jukebox in 1969. There, as the flip side to the well-known hit, there was this strange Beatles title I had never heard before. I plunked in my money, and I couldn't stop playing it. ☺️
I wouldn't say this was underrated. I used to hear it a lot on the radio growing up. Possibly because the Beatles had so many hit songs, this tended to get lost in the shuffle.
For me, this and WALRUS, ALL YOU NEED have some of the most interesting lyrics. It's interesting those all three were composed in the same time-range, too. "Nobody, I think, is in my tree... you must be either high or low..."
This was the flip side of All You Need is Love in summer 1967, and later included on the USA version of the album Magical Mystery Tour. Definitely a Lennon Song...
McCartney chorus, Lennon verse! Much like “Yellow Submarine” and a few others
Interesting song you picked, a deep cut,. It is good to see how younger people examine the Beatles. It seems most people really like them.
I bought this album when I was in junior high and played the hell out of it. I love this because it sounds like you're in a taxi driving through a crazy City but it's just such a well written song.
Great melodic moving bass line by Paul as always ! So often overlooked !
always loved this song... the music and the lyrics both.... "tuned to a magic key!"
Tuned to a natural E?
I love seeing your reaction. I don't think the song is underrated. It was the flip side of All You Need is Love, and since this song had such a great impact when it came out, it might have put Baby You're a Rich Man a bit in the shadow. But otherwise I remember it was received well in 1967.
Paul bass...you know my name (pick up your number)
This is very good album
Underrated? Perhaps only because The Beatles recorded so many highly rated songs. It did sit between "Penny Lane" and "All You Need Is Love" on the side of the record with "Strawberry Fields Forever". That's a tough field for a song to play in! "Baby, You're a Rich Man" was the B-side to "All You Need Is Love" and there was some backlash to the sentiment of that song in the seventies as the optimism of the sixties evaporated into the cynicism of the seventies. Perhaps also because the Magical Mystery Tour album was a Capitol Records marketing afterthought that worked so well The Beatles made it official in 1976, but the song sorta slipped from people's minds in the years in between. I don't remember exactly when I first heard the song, probably the first time I saw the Yellow Submarine movie. But I remember seeing the album in the record collections my teenage friends put together from their parents records. In some cases the worn out covers spoke to how very often the album was played. I know my buddies and I were playing that record in the early eighties. It was one of the first cd's I bought in the late eighties. It's like "comfort" music for me. Interesting that Mick Jagger sang backing vocals on it too.
Probably my favorite song off the album. Lennon probably regretted writing about their manager, seeing how he died shortly after it's release. But it's got a clever lyric and good refrain.
@@willzimjohn I imagine during all times of honesty, Lennon would admit he was an A-hole, much of the time.
The movie The Social Network about Mark Zuckerberg ends with this song because Aaron Sorkin the screenwriter is a huge Beatles fan - love your Beatles reviews Cimdy ;)
Here sissy thank for this long time I have not heard this song
Johns verses are aimed at the social elite who have wealth and fame but no substance. Paul's chorus is a subtle jab at their manager Brian Epstein. The touring Beatles would get paid a flat fee. Bur Brian would also collect an off the books cash "gratuity' which would be paid and placed in the brown bag he carried to each concert. This cash was used for spreading around money for the Beatles and their road crew. John plays a Clavoline. It's the odd trumpet sounding instrument heard throughout the track. It's a keyboard that was the forerunner to the synthesizer. and can only play one note at a time. The song was recorded at Olympic Studios (who as it happened had a Clavoline on site) making it the first Beatles song to be completely recorded and mixed outside of EMI Studios. RNB
A lot of good info there, thanks for sharing it!
Paul is singing high harmony on the chorus. John's still singing lead.
Good morning Rick, how are you doing?
@@ggsworld7462 Hello G G😘 I'm doing fine. Thanks for asking. How are things in your neck of the woods?
I've missed you❤

Enjoyed ❤watching
It's sounds Irish! 🪲🪲🪲🪲+🍎🍏🍎🍏=Beatles 😘😅
Yep. It's experimental. This album was very experimental: I Am the Walrus, Blue Jay Way. It's been awhile since I've heard this and hear it with fresh ears. I was impressed with the drumming.😉
Beatles/The Word and also The Word REMIXED
I don't know about the underrated thing but I will say that as fun and enjoyable as it is to hear these songs it has to be said that they lack a "warmth" that was there during the days of vinyl.
Mick Jagger was present in the studio and is probably doing backing vocals with them, uncredited. The Beatles and The Stones were quite close with each other.
WHO PLAYS THAT WILD LEAD GUTAR, GEORGE OR JOHN IT IS A JOHN SONG, ALSO SHORTER VERSION
MAYBE NOT SHORTER?
If you eliminate all of the psychedelia, it is a good tune on it's own
