Inspired by Smurfs, American comic creator Adam Yeater's Norx and Mogz is a sci-fi fantasy village with less words than the average comic experience. I recommend checking them out with Smurf nostalgia in tow.
The ‘little creatures in the woods’ idea seems to be something that shows up again and again. The Australian version is May Gibb’s Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, not a comic but an illustrated children’s book. I imagine all of this springs out of faeries and whatnot.
