It's fun watching Carson go down the Blend Mode rabbit hole. This is the first video I've watched from you guys where I knew everything already. Made me feel smart until I realized I'm one year and eleven months behind watching your videos. I tried so many blend modes on Dave Sim's covers when he released the individual early Cerebus issues. Some of the covers we just recreated or remastered, but we got to got to town (no, DOWNtown) on some of the new covers he drew for the Kickstarter campaigns and I found myself using blend modes like never before on those. Two years later I feel like a have vocabulary of modes, like a Jazz musician, it's wicked cool.
John Wayne as Genghis Khan in the Conqueror from 1956 is one of the funniest unintentional comedy ever, just how Miscast John Wayne is. They filmed it in Nevada, downwind from a nuclear test site, a third of the cast and crew died of cancer after filming it.
😵💫😵
Hi there . The foto shows a spanish fighter in the civil war 1936 . I think it is from afamos US warjournalist . Good show , superb otomo . Greetings from Germany
Was happy to see that youtube recommended this video to me. I first found out about this manga when the announcement of the sequel came out and have been periodically checking for a translated version, but it seems that not even a fan translation exists from what I could see. I might try to find a copy regardless. Thanks for showing more about it :) And I would definitely like to see a "what ever happened to Masamune Shirow" episode lol
It is insane how hard it is to find even rougj scanlatuons of Otomo's work. Bums me out.
love Samplerman stuff! he even contributed to the TALES TO ENLIGHTEN books!
Goggle "Orson Welles Chimes At Midnight".
I've always found it interesting when people feel they can pass offhand remarks such as these 10:07 so freely and effortlessly, when the original artist has no way to explain the context or defend themself (being passed on for quite some time).
Tea sommelier is not as fun to say as tea barista
Most deffinitely not😅
I liked it a lot. I liked the part where there's a parasite in control of humans and all the celebrities made a deal with the parasites to become a celebrity and the parasites use the celebrities as pawns. I've just come across Daniel Clowes. I'm enjoying his stuff for sure.
I know you've said pronunciation isn't your strong suit - this one's easy - his name is pronounced "bag" Great video, though, thks
That one is easy, thanks!
I just got this a week ago or so as well. Haven't read Fearless Colors yet but quite enjoyed 'Anatomie Narrative', where he rebuilds most parts of the human body.
Have not seen the Anatomie book. That sounds awesome! Thanks for mentioning it.
It's fantastic, you need to get it!

Alice has lived a strange life and it often feels unreal. Sadly, most of the Alice Cooper comics do not capture the character as well as the Neil Gaiman/Michal Zulli collaboration in the 90s.
A life that full of stories is a life well lived.
AL Williamsons' star wars books are amazing, I have no idea how he is not one of the greats
Who said he isn't?
@@Diraldir because... this is the first time EVER ive seen someone mentioning him, without actively searching i think that might constitute popularity. hell, my mom thinks im great but single person does not concessus make. Also none of my comic friends never mentioned him and they always recommended comics
@@mariuszzwolak_It really just depends what eras and stylistoc legacies you are into, but in certain taste-sets it doesn't get much better than peak Williamson.
@@mariuszzwolak_ Just because he's not popularly known, doesn't mean he's not one of the greats. This is where a term like "hidden gem" comes in handy.
@@shefalichow7917 he is great to you and five other guys, I dont get it with you guys I used to hunt at any comic store before internet and try to find moebius I never found one, i recently found an amazing artist the goes by 17 different names Artifact or val lakey. They are great but only to boomers after they are gone they will great to no one. Lets be real recognition and concusses make you great in this society and your greatness will last otherwise it will disappear
I picked up a couple of the Hate Revisited issues recently. Great cartooning, walked a fine edge for me on the comedy. Half the jokes landed, the rest felt a bit too edgelord. But ya’know that ain’t a bad ratio for a funny book.
I dig the new stuff. Seems to come from the place of a political 'middle person" like myself who is puy off by both 'sides'.
Lovely work indeed.
❤
Beautiful thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Very interesting set of books, thanks

There won't be a number 2 i don't think. This came out in '08, and Picturebox no longer publishes, and Weinstein has made a few unrelated comix since then
Too bad. Fun book.
You envy the god box yet you would not sacrifice a mere 24 hours labor to aid in its creation? What help will you be when the revolution comes? ;)
32:20 That's interesting, I never heard that term. How is it spelled? Great review as usual, it shows that you thought about how Williamson drew and inked quite a lot... I knew that from Strange Death already, of course :) I believe one of the first things Prentice taught Williamson was how to draw men in suits- time to grow up! Enough with the jeans, tights and spacesuits... at least for a while! Now that I think of it, I would be interested in your thoughts on Prentice. There are a few artists who were so good at drawing specifically in a more famous artist's style that they get forgotten a lot. Leslie Turner is another one, or Cliff Sterrett's ghost- whose name escapes me, case in point...
Veudic. A weird one, but very helpful, Glyphic Vs. Veudic. Then Graphic vs Painterly and a few others. Prentice had balls and the chops to back them up. I have not read much of his work as it was not relevant to much of my SDOAR work, but I sure would love to have it all. The stuff I have seen is stunning. I wish there were one big effort to scan as much original art at high resolution as possible. Preserve those gems before they vanish.
Thanks I bought this a lifetime ago and when my stack got unwieldy I put it away and never got back to it. Gonna revisit it when I can
It is a fun one. Dig it out!
I like the vampirella / Shadowhawk novels
I searched for this book on here to show my river Zaffino’s work, I was making dinner and talking about graphic novels I’d read over and over, this is one of them however the second half is a lot different but still a good read
I like that the IDW Archie reprints keep the actual printing/coloring of the original books, and didn't ruin them like hundreds of marvel trades that completely stuffed up 70's and 80's reprints with digital coloring that loses nearly all shading, tones and all planes (no background or foreground due to the primitive / lazy digital coloring that was used).
Beautiful stuff !!
One of the best to do it!
"Try and draw like Al Williamson" Sure mate........ 😂😅😢😢😢😢
No big deal🤷♂️😅😅😅😅
Great talk through of the book, thanks. I was wondering about getting some of his work, now I will. 👍
Roca's stuff is awesome. Treasure of the Black Swan is a great one to start with. -Carson
I'm glad you're covering Paco Roca. I'm glad Fanta is collecting him. Roca is a cartoonist that I love and needs a wider audience in English.
I am very glad that Fanta seems committed to keeping the Roca flowing, -Carson
I'm not sure that I've got your implication but I don't understand how a "childish" thing like war makes also the medium that is talking about it childish. The comic becomes childish if the way the author narrates it is. It's basically the "how" and not the "what" that defines something adult or not. Anyway, I disagree, war and politics are complex and for this reason can't be childish. War is basically a very human thing, it's in our nature and can be seen in everyday life as well. What changes is the scale. Also, you find it hard to follow because it is indeed way more complex than following humans' psyche, feeling and so on. That's like in every single book, movie or whatever that I've experienced. Understanding a court intrigue needs a lot of attention, for sure more than what you need to understand a man's struggle. I'm not into politics and basically I don't care but Miguel struggle/behavior wouldn't make much sense without showing what war is or it would be weak and not profound.
It is basically because complexity does not equal maturity in my mind. Complexity is often a sophmoric veil for lack of depth. No saying Tardi lacks depth, but that the complexity of politics does not make it an inherently compelling topic for wisdom.
I have the spanish expanded version by Astiberri. The comic itself is the same but it contains a lot of new extras. I'll do a video about it at some point for my channel because you missed something very important. Paco Roca never really Met Miguel!!!!!
Oh, okay, I need to reread this, then.
I love how Vol. 2 manages to weave all of these disparate threads together into something even vaguely coherent. Love all the resonances between the names and events.
I look forward to getting that one and doing a re-read of the whole shebang all at once, then! -Carson
Oh, good, Sean is back

I got to 4:33 before I got fed up with you running the master's work down with your limp complaints. I'm out.
Thanks for giving it a go. -Carson
I think the way you saw and understood his work has opened up my eyes for it as well. Given me a new and fresh perspective, thank you for taking the time to read them and dive into their meaning.
Love hearing that. Thanks so much for watching! This is great work that deserves deep analysis.
I read through it yesterday, and while I really continue to like the visual style of Burns, I have to agree with you on the actual story - it felt really underwhelming in the sense that I was thinking out loud if this is really the only story that Burns has to tell. Again, like you pointed out, it got me wondering what place this work is coming from - is Burns as a person really still struggling with this sort of trauma at his age? If yes, that would actually made me feel really sad for him. If not, then why does he keep making these teenage angst stories? My recommendation would be: if you like this sort of artwork - go for it, but if you haven't read any Burns stories yet, get Black Hole instead.
It is very sad if this is something he still grapples with, and frustrating if it is just a lack of growth. I need to re-read Black Hole and the X-ed out books to see how they hold up. -Carson
FFS Had me with the cover. 😢😉
Had to get me that sweet Royal Boiler cover
I'd like to see Brémaud & Bertolucci try their hand at Howard the Duck, Darkwing Duck, or other great ducks.
Howard would be extra interesting because the tone is so different. Darkwing Duck would offer up a great color pallette.
@clubgrubbug that's what I was thinking. Howard's sarcasm and with might not translate as well as Donald's simpler emotions
Absolutely gorgeous. There always been a bit of push against the Disney comics, but they have done some great pieces in the past.
Even Carson said 'what the hell do you mean i have to get a donald duck book'.. Carl Barks made some of the best comics ever.
@@DiraldirNow I gotta go get the damned Carl Barks books😡🤣😂
I definitely need to get over that bias because this book was stunning.
Reminds me of the old "Little Golden Books" line. Beautiful, innocent and charming stories/artwork. I grew up reading and appreciating them. Hope they do more of these, and with other characters!
It does look like there are more in the series of European creators doing Disney characters.
going to have to get this, looks beautiful
Yes. A must own.
Been following Sam on instagram for ages. Love see all the traditional art. Awesome work from a fellow New Zealander.
He is so good with his materials!
Think of every major graphic artist to work during the 80s and ‘revolutionise’ their genre. Then realise Toppi got there decades before they found him as a major influence! Toppi is a GIANT, one of the most important artists in any field of the twentieth century.
Totally agreed. -Carson
Hi! Thanks for the video. Love your reviews! I'm from Spain and I wanted to ask if the book title was translated as "Occultos" for the US or if it is a miswriting?
Thanks for pointing that out. I mistyped it.
Awesome! Just ordered a copy. Thanks for the video!
Me too! 👍
Love hearing it!🎉
@alexthompson3447🎉

Thanks for tuning in!
Great review. I noticed that you admired Micheluzzi's compositions. I wanted to point out how much his compositions, black fill-ins and even some of the Onomatopoeia lettering all reminds me so much of Alex Toth. I wonder if the artists were aware of each other.
That is a good call. The common link for both goes back to Alex Raymond and the like, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was at least an influence coming directly from Toth.
Guys! We need an interview with Sam Moore, ASAP, discussing tools, etc!!!
That'd be fun!
He calls himself a copic ambassador, so that's his main tool.
Thanks brotha! Reading Ichi The killer now. You just put me in to this; i’ll read it next!
I need to read Ichi! Are you enjoying it?
@ oh yeah big time! I definitely recommend it. You can find pdfs online of it very easily! Nothing beats a physical copy though! Been looking for one in my area!
The art reminds me of Scott Travis with watercolors.
I will have to look Scott Travis up. Thank you!
