Anecdotically , notice the 'De Luca effect' used three times at page 4 of 'The Labyrinths'. A page dated 1968, seven years before De Luca did his Hamlet comic book adaptation responsible for the name of the effect. (And maybe someone else may have used the technique even before Buzzelli)
Excited to get this one!
I found this comic exceptional.
In what regard? -Carson
absolutely one of my favorite illustrators and comic artists. just brilliant.
A true modern master! -Carson
the sperm comma tampon endpaper would make a good wallpaper.
😂😂😂😂
great looking book- I totally get your critique on the color/contrast though. I especially liked your take on diversity in media not having to be central to the story telling- very well put :) this vid came out a week or so ago, so congrats on the new house! lol
Thank you!!! We are so happy here. -Carson
Trust yourself and trust the audience, or just do it anyway and don't worry if they figure it out or not.
100% -Carson
Congratulations on the House!! Very cool looking book. I aways like the colour hold lineless approach, but as you pointed out sometimes readability is a problem without the lines to give that separation. It was something I felt about a lot of cartoons that went lineless in the post flash era.
Thank you!!! -Carson
Lale Westvind seems like a really cool creator, I haven't read any of her works yet though. I am a fan of your videos. I have been watching more lately and am surprised to see not a single video about 'Yoshihiro Tatsumi'? Is this just a glaring omission on your part? Will you also do videos of 'Kamui Den' and 'Ashita no Joe' once released? another question: how do you get/read so many books? Do publishers send you copies?
Lale has to be seen in person to be truly appreciated. Definitely get you some. I don't know if "glaring omission" is the right way to put it, so much as, the world is full of awesome stuff and I am focused on current creators. Sean is the one that turns me on to the historical manga. Sadly, I don't get much sent my way. I have been blessed the last few years to have a second job that allows me to splurge, but, since I do pay for it all I have to pick and choose. Another reason things that came into print before the channel started don't get covered. They are on my Amazon wish list but I will always prioritize a new release, no matter how "important" a work is.
@@clubgrubbug Fair enough, apologies if I was rude! It's just crazy that every time I find a new creator that you've already made a video on them so I had to ask. The channel is very bad for my wallet. But luckily I already know my tastes, so despite all the fantastic artists, I likely won't pick a lot of this up like you do. I just found out about Pat Aulisio for example, looks way up my alley. May I suggest 'Makinaphobe' by Rafael Zaiats for a newer book?
This is Sean! Brandon and I already did a video on Kamui, I am sure we'll have Something on Joe and Kamui :) I have a Tatsumi library, good stuff! I bet Carson would dig Push Man and maybe Drifting Life too.... Maybe I'll send him a copy of both ? :)
@@LivingtheLine Awesome! Can't wait. I do think Carson would quite enjoy them too! I really appreciate the work you guys do. I only have both 'Plaza' and 'Moonray 1&2' but both are spectacular. Graham is one of my favorites. The Rabagoo Race from Garresh also looks right up my alley and totally stunning. You guys are becoming one of the best publishers here in the US. Keep doing what you're doing! I'm not as much a fan of the older horror manga, but it's still cool stuff. And P.S I do hope to see more Yokoyama reprinted. Such a cool creator!
@@Diraldir Haha, sorry for the hit to the wallet. I am probably gonna have to slow down now that I own a home, so maybe some wallet relief for all of us😅
I like granular printing discussions somedays. Thank you.
My pleasure, obvioisly😅
Began reading my copy last night. About halfway done. I will return to your video when I finish. My track record for satisfying Burns has not been good - I didn't care for Black Hole nor Xed Out. His stuff seems to lack the humor of his earlier comics.
I need to go read those two again. I rember enjoy them. -Carson
Interview with Olivier would be something huge!
I wish! Anyone got contacts!?
Probably some light spoilers here You didn't discuss the use of the The Last Picture Show and totally missed that the story is about mental illness. That portal you speak of can be ideations that build up to a psychotic break. She never shared in them, except when she helps recreate them in his movies. The larger theme is about how we often don't see these breaks coming. The one suffering them don't notice it (they just work them out in the best way they can) and their friends don't notice it. (They just see them as weird or something) Take a look again there is much more going on here.
Ehhh, I can see that interpretation, but I never saw a mental break. I saw a self-involved outsider who was that way from the jump. Typical that-era cartoonist mentality, the misunderstood social-idiot with lovely worlds on the inside. Coulda been interesting, but fell flat because of the romantic angst stuff. For me. -Carson
my husband bought thus book for me, we both thinking it will be a super sweet... this book makes me feel very UNCONFORTABLE XD specially the lion story! the firdt one and the vamoare are sweet, but the others... weird, I dont want this book in my house anymore xD
I felt the exact same way and did throw the book away after this review was filmed. -Carson
I feel like the guy narrating this saw some pictures of Uma Thurman playing June Miller in Henry and June and thought they were actually pictures of June. 😂 June Miller didn’t look like Uma Thurman.
Could be. -Carson
If there is a theme in this cartoon, it is discrimination. Racism and discrimination against diseases. How often we judge people by their appearance. The last scene where Kirihito is invited and welcomed by a group of people suffering from a disease is very moving. Tezuka has always used handicapped people as his main characters.
And I think he handled it so well in this book. By far the best Tezula I have read. -Carson

absolute masterpiece! you're so right, i read it in chunks as it was coming out and every time a new issue came out i had to reread the previous ones to get back into it. next level stuff in all fronts and real funny too!
I can't imagine reading it in chunks, but yes, a great reason to just go back to it over and over!
Absolutely! 🙌
🙌🙌
Great perspective on this book....for me the book became tedious halfway through...the enchantment of the beautiful art wore off, i guess.
Glad I wasn't the only one. I started very into the story and left just feeling bad for Burns.
I read "Final Cut" last week and didn't really care about the story either. It overall simply wasn't very interesting to me. The craftsmanship is obviously off the charts and the thick paper and printing felt great. In my opinion, you should cut Burns some slack though. Couldn't it also be that they're maybe a prisoner of their own success in some way. I imagine that on one hand, they've cultivated a readership that always expects something like the next "Black Hole", and on the other there's possibly a similar mental pressure at play. I can still enjoy their stuff by simply looking at the pretty pictures and compositions though. Maybe people should dial down their expectations.
If it is a prisoner of ones own success I feel really bad for the dude.
@@clubgrubbug I don't know about that. At least they're successful with their cartooning. I'm just stipulating here that instead of attacking their mental and/or personal development like in the review above - which hardly seem fair -, there might be other forces at play here.
I prefer Burns' Altoid ads to his actual comics, but that's because I'm a wierdo. I think he continues to go back to the teen angst well because he was influenced by romance comics and is working in the now gone genre. He does it well for an old man returning to teen angst.
😂 Maybe I should check those out. He does it very well. I just don't see why.
@@clubgrubbug I'd buy a collection of his Altoid ads. They were done in the same style and time as Black Hole. Some makers have a preferred genre. Los Bros Hernandez will always be slice of life. Erik Larsen will always be superheroes. Burns will always be twisted romance.
@@johnm.withersiv4352 Fair, but some of that ages better than others. Like Jazz vs Ozzy Osbourne trying to be metal while hobbling around on stage.
Love Charles Burns 's artwork , next level craftsmanship . Would be interesting to see him collaborate with a writer but like most artists , I suspect he writes stories that feature things he wants to draw.
Oh, so many of these guys could use a collaborator.
I already got Her Frankenstein and this one. Looking forward to this collection!
Thanks for the support!
I really enjoyed this release. Look forward to more! Carson, when will you do a video on taiyo matsumoto?
Oh, I do need to do that. I have all his stuff and need to do a Ranking Taiyo Matsumoto video, especially now that Tokyo These Days is done.
You never read any Michael Moorcock books? Elric is a Michael Moorcock character. The Witcher is a Elric rip-off
I just recently read some of the 80's comic adaptations and it was definitely not my jam. Seemed really wandery with not much point to anything.
@ The couple Elric books I’ve read were pretty good, though I hear they’re not all bangers. I was listening to some of Moorcock’s Jerry Cornelius books last week on auto book, realized Matt Fractions Casanova and Buckaroo Bonzi are rip offs of Jerry Cornelius, I liked his Elric stuff better though. They really drop off after the first book.
@@jamesedwardclard The adaptations I read just kind of seemed like bad fan fiction stories with some kind of weird multiverse nonsense, which always turns me off. Great art though. Some sick P.Craig Russel work in many of them.
@@clubgrubbug Yea it goes off in weird multiverse stuff. Holds together a bit better in the books probably. Yea bit of art nouveau kinda look to it from the little I've seen
Based on how much I enjoyed ‘Her Frankenstein’ I bought an untranslated copy of ‘The City of Horror’ great reading experience going through with no grasp of the language. *I think* it was clear enough to just read the panels, at least for 95% of it. Something I’ll have to try again.
@@dionturner4279 he's a very visual cartoonist! I've "read" a down of his books in Japanese, probably two dozen of Shinichi Koga's, and both "read" quite well without the words, especially with a summary or two to help :) A fun reading stretch! So glad you enjoyed it
The ‘little creatures in the woods’ idea seems to be something that shows up again and again. The Australian version is May Gibb’s Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, not a comic but an illustrated children’s book. I imagine all of this springs out of faeries and whatnot.
@@dionturner4279 I need to make an international little people myth inventory!
great review guys. lol @ shirows super autistic jokes
An OCD pedant, at least😂
This book and other Jodo books broke me on regular sci-fi. Everything else feels so underwhelming in comparison.
And the art from Giminez on this is unrivaled, still, imo. -Carson
I didn't know they made a Jodorowsky library. That'd be easier. I've read scattered things in Heavy Metals and all of Incal, but that's about it.
I don't know how complete it is. It seems like they have abandoned the project.nor maybe they just don't have rights for some things. - Carson
@@LivingtheLine Still seems like a better gateway.
One of my faves!! Heads up that you spelled the author’s last name wrong. It’s “Mackay” 🙃
Gracias!
Inspired by Smurfs, American comic creator Adam Yeater's Norx and Mogz is a sci-fi fantasy village with less words than the average comic experience. I recommend checking them out with Smurf nostalgia in tow.

Absolutely.
I just got my copy this week! Love Brandon's style and so grateful to get through this one
🎉❤
Jodorowsky lives to provoke and from your reaction it seems to be working well :)
Haha. I just find his provocations to be a bit childish, not offensive or anything. But, also, I am from a generation where Jodo's generation had already torn down those walls, so seeing them torn down is not terribly interesting.
There are several Piskor inspired anthologies. I grabbed Ninja Turtles Grand Design and Troll Call already. I snagged them from Bryan Moss on Insta but other people are selling them. I haven't grabbed 25 Summers yet. It's an extension of the Kayfabe audience.

@@HrvojeGrahovac We did wreck the southwest pretty good, yeah.
Interesting book. I wonder if this horizontal format is something that is a thing in Spain. I had watched a domestika course a while ago by another Spanish comic book artist and some of his printed work used a similar format. Interesting point about this feeling like a webcomic, I had a similar thought when you went through the black pages up front. That sort of pacing and utilization of negative space is very common on the infinite scroll format of online comics since there is no cost to using as much black or white and nothing else for just pacing. Different story in print, so very interesting to see that choice made and have multiple pages of black to really implement the pacing they wanted to. It could have so easily been a case where a call was taken to at least reduce the number of black pages with no text on them.
I have one other book by Roca in this format, but many in more standard ratios, so I am not sure what drove the formatting choice. Maybe some cultural convention I am missing that Roca is trying to invoke?
@@clubgrubbug Could be a combination of wanting to do something that leans more into a horizontal canvas as well as the standard printing format there. Id also be curious if those books were essentially a subdivision of an A3 page.
To answer your question... This was published as a Book by Astiberri in Spain
Much appreciated!
