@@dubliner85 If you listen closely you'll hear that Luke does play the banjo on this recording, so he was on stage at this point. edit: I don't mean the twangly banjo parts that Barney plays. Behind that, there's Luke playing a second banjo, strumming the chords. Clearly audible at ua-cam.com/video/79M-J40ATkA/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/79M-J40ATkA/v-deo.html, for instance.

Best version of this song. In my eyes Sean is much underrated
You're dead right. Not many people beat Luke Kelly. He wins this one in my eyes. Incredible singer.
That has always been the best version of that song I have heard. It has the right pace with a lovely voice. Cheers Sean.
Sean, one of the great voices.Hear Sean sing The Newry highwayman magical,
Love his voice and him
My favorite version.
This song made me move back home to Ireland.
Great song, great singer, great country.
I love this version. Had it on my old computer.
I've been looking for a version chanted by Sean for years. So glad I found one!
I love both versions. I think you could not compare this two very different and unique voices. Luke´s is deeper and sounds more pleasant.
The real first one, was in dublin, on the record 21 years on. This is in october in 1983. The last concert with Luke, before Luke died.
The real first recording of Song For Ireland was done by Sean Cannon in 1977 on the album The Roving Journeyman, way before he joined The Dubliners
Best version of this song, and he's competing against Luke Kelly. Sean Cannon is a great underrated singer
best version
This song makes me wish I was Irish
Was this the first time the Dubliners performed/recorded this song, or was there an earlier version?
No problem, it's from their album 'Live in Carre'
Why did Luke Kelly not sing it
@@ronananker7986 Luke was very sick at this stage and I can only assume he didn't feel up for it

Was this Sean's first Dubliners performance?
