- The very first commercial recording of this song written by Phil & June Colclough.
Long before Sean joined the Dubliner's, it was recorded for his solo LP "The Roving Journeyman".

The version i have of this song is his performance on the Best of the Dubliners L/P recorded in Amsterdam many years later. One of my favourite songs of all time! I can listen Sean singing all day long, whatever the song!
Wonderful 😊😮
He has a wonderful voice
Indeed, one of the best versions of this most beautiful song. I remember Sean singing it around 1977 when this recording was made, and was astonished when the world of Irish music showed very little interest. It was only some years later when Dick Gaughan recorded the song that it became famous, and it is Gaughan's version that most people sing, which is a pity in some ways. Cannon was probably the best voice in Ireland, if not the whole word, and a Big Thank You to whoever put this early rendition on UA-cam for more people to hear it.
Black Jake of Norwich.
what a voice! -saw him at a folk club in Coventry early 70"s and his voice was epic
He still lives in Coventry I believe.
@@MickyOHanlon2262 Your belief is correct.
From Dublin to Coventry is a big step down. I live less than 20 miles out from Coventry. Much rather be living in Ireland to be honest. @@MickyOHanlon2262

good...
Reccorded even before Luke Kelly's version.
Slightly different lyrics.
In fact sean introduced luke to the song. He was a friend of the writer.....this version is my favorite..... simple production and that sweet west of ireland lilt.....
@@maxvolmue99 I suspected that alright.
gorgeous would do luke kelly proud
