- "Unbroken Chain" from the album Mars Hotel stands out as a cornerstone in the Grateful Dead's repertoire, a song of significant complexity both musically and lyrically. Written by Bobby Petersen with music by Phil Lesh, its debut in live performance at the Spectrum in Philadelphia on March 19, 1995, after years of anticipation, triggered an uproar of excitement from the audience, marking a unique moment in the band's history.
It was only played live for a short time unfortunately. Throughout their final tour, it remained a cherished part of their live sets, culminating in a memorable rendition as the penultimate song at their last show on July 9, seamlessly transitioning from "Drums" into "Sugar Magnolia," with a total of ONLY TEN live performances!!
Yet, it's the studio version on "Mars Hotel" that never fails to captivate. One of the Grateful Dead’s most beautiful songs. Hunter wrote the lyrics for Phil when his father passed away. Phil wrote the music and they played it intermittently until 1973, when they shelved it.
I was so lucky to be in Hampton on 3/20/86 when the band busted it out again after 13 years! What a moment. They sure loved bustouts in Hampton. That was their East Coast Fillmore. Maybe Madison Square Garden but I think of it is Hampton. Have a great day. Everybody be kind to one another.

i'm not sure what it meant. but when i started doing dmt, consistently during the experience my dmt joint would turn into a chain structure. it was absolutely mesmerizing. but i always think about that, and i believe it had to do with a woman i was with at the time, because it felt like she had me in chains
