- Today, with Rhino’s surprise release of From The Mars Hotel: The Angel’s Share, the Grateful Dead vaults have once again been opened. Featuring 16 newly unearthed session recordings, the digital collection brings listeners directly into San Francisco’s Coast Recorders during the spring of 1974, revealing the band’s real-time process as they crafted such eternal staples as “Scarlet Begonias,” “Ship Of Fools,” “China Doll,” “U.S. Blues,” “Unbroken Chain” and more that would make up their classic From The Mars Hotel LP. The evolution of all of those songs and other album highlights is charted throughout this fourth edition of the band’s fan-favorite Angel’s Share series. Like previous installments that accompanied milestone reissues of Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty and Wake Of The Flood, From The Mars Hotel: The Angel’s Share brings together hours of expertly-curated outtakes, alternate versions, acoustic mixes, unexpected moments and revelations that have never been heard or available on DSPs until now. Listen here: gd.lnk.to/FTMHTAS
In honor of its 50th Anniversary, From The Mars Hotel has also been reissued and expanded with rediscovered material and rarities. Out June 21st via Rhino, six days before the album’s original release five decades ago, From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) features remastered audio by GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer David Glasser, with Plangent Processes tape restoration and speed correction. Produced for release by Grateful Dead Legacy Manager and Audio Archivist, David Lemieux, the deluxe edition includes demos of “China Doll” and “Wave That Flag” - the song that became “U.S. Blues” - as well as a previously unreleased live performance of the Grateful Dead at University of Nevada-Reno on 5/12/1974, where a massive wind storm was no match for the Wall of Sound. Listen here: gd.lnk.to/FTMH50
From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Remaster) will be released on June 21st as a single 180-gram black vinyl LP, limited edition Neon Pink vinyl, limited edition “Ugly Rumors” custom vinyl exclusive to Dead.net, and a specially-designed picture disc created in partnership with zoetrope pioneer Drew Tetz. When viewed with a camera or strobe, the zoetrope LP will appear to animate, and can be pre-ordered now along with the rest of From The Mars Hotel (50th Anniversary Remaster) variants.

Ultra vibe hearing this Scarlet Begonias sans vocals. All of the details popping through. Thanks for this.
Love these Unbroken Chains outtakes
Agree.. I always felt it was as good as "Dark Star" When first hearing it.. This album for me was pivotal , it came out when I was in high school and remember playing the record a lot..
Just amazing.
Still playing in the heart of gold band 83-24

Thank you for areal good Tim from Patti Cornell
100% :) Thank god this exists. 2024 freaking sucks.
It sure does , it seems like the music has left us along with Jerry , Brent , Ramrod , Bill Graham plus all the others who have left us !
Couldn’t say it better!!
Vote Trump to turn that around then...
Verrry NICE!
Wherever the Dead stayed, it was always the Mars Hotel.
(~);} 🌹⚡stoned in the basement, I listened to "From The Mars Hotel" continuously as if under a spell
1976 at the end of a country lane in my car, slightly overserved on psilocybin, listened over and over, all night for about 5 hours.
That was the night I stopped worrying too much about it.
China Doll is very special to me.
This ROCKS!
From Patti Cornell
Thanks again!
For my old friend Matt C- gimme five ,

SWEEEEET!!!
What a treat!
Unbelievable as it seems but From Mars Hotel is the only studio album I have never owned and I have yet to hear it in its entirety and I have been collecting GD since the mid 70s.I have tried to listen to it on Spotify but I always get interrupted. Now I am just about to order the 50th anniversary edition finally. On the strength of what I am hearing here the door is bolted and the phone is off.Beer,a left handed cigarette and nice big chair and my stereo will be order of the day.
I concur🎉
WOW!!!
Ship of fools hitting me hard!
Jerrynity Now!!
This alternate version of Money Money is great. Bobs voice at its peak here.
Had this on the MoFi CD dam late 80's can't tell for sure!
Two commercials after every song? Nah, I want music.
So nice Etherial to Mars🎇🎇🎇🎇🚌🚌🐻🐻
✨️Magical✨️
easier to hear the interplay between Jerry and Bob without the vocals, very cool!
Bob Weir is my favorite guitarist in rock. Amazing rhythms!
Ok that 4th version of Unbroken Chain is my new favorite version, at least for now : )
❤❤❤
. navigating history .
. ship of fools wild . still that cruel sea believe .
Jerry came looking for me but ended up on an island with a ship of fools because they didn’t know Jerry was even there ! ❤😂🐰🐇🌹🌙☠️💀☮️👽🪐🛸🚀💥✨☄️⭐️🌟⚡️love this very much !
Ooo just happened to take a molly today too😊
Thanks guys, especially to Jer and Keith. Bob,we’ll just let Moneylive on to be the aberration it isn’t., yet is. Nobody did it like you guys; considering it was 1974 and I was just a gawky 15 year old just a few years away from my first of 114 shows. And I get to do it all over again with Phish. Though very different, they carry the torch. The big question is, Who’s Next?
I was 15 in 74 also. I had seen them a couple of times. They where are my first love and will always hold a special place in my heart. I never got into fish I was massive Neil Young and Crazy Horse fan by that time.
Now that's all over but we now have King Gizzard . Best band on the planet and there seems to be a lot of crossover between Grateful Dead fans and King gizzard fans young and old alike
Breaks my heart to discover all of these years and memories later that these guys were just a front man for the CIA
this is at approx folsom and 5th street..... i lived right there 25 years.....when the Loma Prieta eartquake hit the building was wrecked and for a year we climbed in and out all kinda spaces in there..... i did foto shoots of muscians and smoked alot weed too....... i never knew The CBS studios were right there until now....... :) beautiful sf dead history :)
Studio Scarlet demo?!🤫

😊
I wonder where Phish got their sound?
Question....did any member of the Dead play the "pull my finger" prank during this recording session?
Donna Jean for sure.
@@jaydeboer7628 lol for real.
Loomis California USA 4/18/2024.
Are these out takes available as a CD somewhere?
Yeah. Look up in the Description at top.
Every layer of the song is different ! So nice + clear plus clean ! ❤️🐇🐰🗡️🩸💕💞😒😔😉😇☄️🤩🌟✨🌙⭐️⚡️Love is all u need !!!
Heartbreaking! I can’t believe this has commercials. Wtf? It’s so disappointing 😥
No commercials for UA-cam subscriptions. 🤷🏻♀️
So that UA-cam can profit off the work of others? Hell no!
I think it’s a shame that GD Corp …. Is so concerned with revenue that they can’t just let the music play. The interruptions are disrespectful to the music and the listener.
Fuck UA-cam and fuck GD merchandising.
@seanwallace6404 so you buy it if you want no commercials.
Or you pay UA-cam monthly to have no commercials.
It's pretty simple.
Wasn’t that the Ugly Rumors album?…
Roll the tape.......
And ty 4 a reel good time
N remember.. stay in your own movie
Happy bike day!!!!!!
❤️🤍💙
Jerry Garcia my prophet and my hero. My estimated prophet
Funny how Money Money gets all the hate while Loose Lucy is just good time.... no one gets sarcasm I guess.

So much better without the vocals!
Unbroken chain is killing me gently ! ❤️🐰🐇🌹😩🪬💕⚡️💀☠️🩸🗡️🌟✨☄️⭐️🌙👽🪐🛸🚀💞😇😔😒🥲😢😥🤩😉
While it's still not a concert - and therefore not their comfort zone - it's kinda giving those vibes thanks to the outtakes, feels more natural. The album versions of the songs are both too sterile and too overmixed and edited. You end up with none of the boys' character.
Ugly rumors ......
Donna was the dead , lol
Jerry was in my life for 10 years until I had enough of being there , it was exhausting ! ❤😢😮😊❤️🐰🐇🌹⚡️💥💕🗡️🩸🪬😩
It always sounds as if someone is out of tune.
Donna is to loud over the other guys ! 😒😔😟☹️😔😖😩❤️🐰🐇🌹☠️💀☮️👽🪐🛸🚀⭐️⚡️☄️💥✨🌟🌙 all Love 💕
Thank you for being in my life Jerry
Instrumental Scarlet Begonias - too cool.
Thanks, guys. Can't wait to hear the "Angel's Share" of Blues For Allah next.
That's going to be the really exciting one. They jammed the hell out of everything during those sessions. Can't wait!!
I remember having a tape in the late ‘70’’s that we called MarsHotel Out Takes. It had instrumental versions of the songs plus some with vocals. Only problem was it was a multi-generational copy with a thick layer of hisssss in the mix. It is so nice to hear this version. Plus I can’t speak enough about how fantastic a drummer Billy is No diss to Mickey, but the Billy years gave the band a different sound, that I loved. Even the Built to Last sessions on here are great to watch/ listen to, when Billy is laying down his tracks. Lastly the China Doll on here is so sweet. Man I love this band.
Had the same cassette 👍 those tapes are what got me to get an equalizer 😉
Fuck mickey. Bill was the original and best.
Billy is a master and so is micky. They have they're own unique take and touch to the drums. By the simple complexity of having the two drums that adds more depth especially when the band is hitting a peak and the energy is building nothing compares to them to together on the drums! But just the same just having Billy on drums gently laying down a beautiful layer to build upon
Ya . I grabbed an unofficial disc , made from Mars Hotel out takes at some point . Far out early Unbroken chain as well. Shards of their studio work. Wower!
Listening to all those Unbroken Chains back to back made my day. absolutely beautiful. Thanks fellas 💜
Mars Hotel came out the same day Bad Company did. KSAN played B.C. Over and over. Did I ever complain, I’d just got the album that day and wanted the world to hear the magic of OUR DEAD. Ship of Fools..beautiful. U.S. Blues just Rocked The Oakland Coliseum and doubled their East Bay fan base.
thank you . . . . for a REAL good time.
Love you all😂
You r welcome love you too

What a great surprise! Made my day!
I love alot of songs on this album but always thought the production was too compressed. Sounded pinched. This doesn't sound like that, which is better.
This is a great version! It's nice to hear new studio versions of old studio versions! 😅
Não canso de me surpreender!!
Grateful Dead é bom demais!
NFA🔴⚡️🔵✌️🙋🏼♀️
Loving the alternate mixes of Scarlet Begonias, and Loose Lucy
This might be a little over the top,but I think the Dead has made their fans better people 🧐
That's a bit extreme, but I'll take it ! 🤔 🤔
There's truth in your observation but I would also suggest that The Grateful Dead is where good people meet. An old friend of mine once said that in his experience "when you meet someone new and you discover they are a Deadhead you have discovered a new friend!"
Thank you for making my day! I love you, Jerry.
Отлично, дайте только нам angel's Shakedown Street, и я вас больше ни о чем не попрошу ❤
Always cool to hear a songs evolution, esp GD classics. One of my favorite Dead albums ✌️ thanks for sharing 🎶
Damn DONNA!
I dig this Scarlet
Money Money may be an alternate take, but nothing has changed about the lyrics 40 years later lol.
Jumping jellybeans that sounds beautiful
Has anyone seen Merlin
First time hearing this! Absolutely love the US Blues instrumental versions sooooooooo cool!

Great album and great memories
Thank u Grateful Dead for having me in ur life + family ! ❤️🐰🐇🌹☠️💀⚡️👽🪐🛸🚀💥☄️ love always ! Plus thanks for shares
We were there!
I was in a big group of people and a medium was asking if anyone knew “a Jerry, leader of a band, a big band”. No one spoke up, I never spoke to Jerry in Earth life, would he be connecting with me through a medium? When she went on to another spirit, and I hadn’t spoke up, I couldn’t help but feel I’d missed an opportunity 😢❤💝💕
U did ! U just went with it + u could have met Jerry ! ❤️🐰🐇☮️☠️💀🌹but u didn’t ! 😢
You could have found out why the dead are grateful! You will have sleepless nights over this!
very nice .. how about time stamps ??
