I have been collecting watches since the 70s, during the early 80s I started taking my watches to a local shop run by a Swiss guy named Lucas. He was trained and built watches for a couple of the big Swiss brands Rolex being the one he started at as a young man and worked for them for like 20 years. He eventually immigrated to the US worked for a local clock maker and then opened his own repair shop. As time went by we became very good friends and he started teaching me how to do the basics and later some of the more complicated stuff. Every time I would bring in one of my new higher end watches for him to look at, he would make a face at me and point to his vintage Timex on his wrist and say to me "why do you waste so much money when all you need is this to tell time!" To this day every time I buy any watch over 100 bucks never mind a real expensive one, All I can see in my mind is his face and hear him in that accent telling me buy a dam Timex! LOL When he retired he went back to the old country but before he closed up for good he gave me a bunch of tools and an old Timex that I still have today and cherish. It still tells time like it was new. I wish I could say that for a lot of my high end watches that I spent 1000s on in servicing fees.

While there's nothing wrong with buying luxury watches...I think the moral of the story is that it's not always the price you pay that makes a watch priceless, it's the memories and sentimental value that you associate with it.
My mom had a small Timex. She lost it in the parking lot on our last day of the season. The next ski season, after we had skied all day and were packed up and ready to leave, my mom suggested we go look around where we were parked when she lost the watch. This was a gravel lot, at Vernon Valley Great Gorge Ski Resort in the winter and the infamous Action Park in the summer. (Just look up Action Park) We found the watch. Half buried in gravel, ice and water. And it was still working. My mom wrote the company with the story but never heard back.

I’m from india and my first instance with a watch was a timex Anadigi. It stayed on my wrist for a good 3 years before the strap broke. I still have it btw. Found it in my drawer during the pandemic. I was so sure it’s not going to work but I put in a new battery and voila it started ticking. That’s a testament to timex and their quality, atleast back in the day. Love timex it’s a great brand with some strong heritage :)
@@jakekaywell5972 they pull the movement out, take the hands and dial off, and it can be cleaned with lighter fluid. They typically just need to be cleaned and they'll start working again. I have 3 that I've fixed with lighter fluid

I am a Swatch Collector but have a 75 Timex Linen that Fred Bitzer in Florida refurbished for me. I love it. It was great-grandfather's watch. Looking for my second timex now, I love the pan-am Waterbury

The old TV commercial where they strap a Timex to the front of a speedboat and then run the boat through an obstacle course. After the boat finished the course they would zoom in close to confirm the watch is still running and state, "Timex, It take a licking and keep on ticking" Advertising gold. The best add for Timex was on Get Smart, when Siegfried magnetized a watch on a ship and pulled it to Schwartz's Island, which was followed by Starker holding it up and uttering the immortal words: "The watch took a licking, but it kept on ticking". I got my first watch, a Timex, the next year, 1969.
A timex Waterbury was my first watch as a watch collector ... looking back I way overpaid buying at msrp but it’s still in my collection and I still love it...
My 30 year old Timex digital has gone everywhere with me. I have taken it swimming many times and it has never leaked. The only service has been the strap and the battery. The battery lasts 4 to 5 years. It is accurate to a few seconds per month. What more can you ask from a watch that cost $42?
I can’t say it enough. Indiglo is the most awesome technology to hit watches since quartz. I love my indiglo Timex. At night, that soft glowing dial lets me see time and nobody but Timex has it even today. So, my daily driver…is and always will be a Timex indiglo.
The watch that got me into this rabbit hole of a hobby was my dad’s old 70’s Timex with expandy bracelet that had been sitting in a jewelry box my whole life. Asked him if he wanted it, started watching videos, ended up on the T3 channel and ended up with a Seiko SNK the next month. That was 2 years ago, I’m about ten watches deep, and I partially blame Jory for it.
That original Ironman sure brings back memories. One of my favorites throughout middle and high schools. Pretty sure wearing it added at least 10ft to my discus tosses and 5mph to my bicycle downhill speed.

With title like "Watch This BEFORE You Buy A Timex!", I thought this is about things one needs to be aware of before one BUYS a Timex. Build quality, maintenance issues, any caveats much more important for watch ownership than company and product history. I hope more people stop using misleading titles like this, or at least notify others of it in the comment section.
@Sigkim wouldn't it be better to consider the expedition chrono ? If you do consider it, then go for it because it has good 100m WR. Also get the expedition scout chrono- it looks more versatile IMHO.
@@dietznutz1 a good watch is a difficult thing to define. Frankly, if it tells the time adequately and is reliable enough, it’s pretty hard to say that timepiece is not “good”. Is a Rolex or omega or longings any better watch than a $20 Casio or $40 Timex? If you’re only using it to tell the time, you could argue the quartz movements makes the affordable watches frankly better tools. Of course, there are reasons people pay for more expensive watches, but that is not to say that they need to in order to get a “good” watch. To be honest, if someone says their watch is flawless, then I’d say its a good watch no matter what the price.
I had one of the original model Ironman watches when I was a kid. I don't think I got it that first year, but it was within a year or two of that, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My mechanical watch (also a Timex, I think) got set aside pretty quickly. And now things have come full circle and I'm back to mostly mechanical, although I do still have a newer Ironman watch that's perfect for times when there's a high chance of damage.
I have a couple of Timex Dynabeats. For a couple of years just before the quartz revolution these electrics sold ran at 28,800 beats. They hammer away so loud I could hear them on the dresser from bed. Both mid 70's.
Omg Jory I just re- re- located my grandfather's 4014(1) Timex Viscount 4014 2961 - Circa 1961. It needed a new crown and to be cleaned and oiled. He obviously loved it and wore it. I polished the crystal and fitted it with a new brown leather band to dress it up a bit. It is in my weekly rotation. So cool to have a piece of history and my grandfather's watch on my wrist. My brother had a Timex redwing Waterbury Chronograph 45mm, about 5 years ago. It was a nice watch, but he sold it after 3-4 months, because he didn’t feel it it. My friend still has a expedition field watch, but the crown broke a few years ago. I still have a plan to buy a timex q, but I can’t find the gold plated black bezel model anywhere.
That's right. The Timex brand started in 1950. John Cameron Swayze did live commercials where he torture tested the watch. One night they lost the watch strapped to boat propeller. John said, "I'm sure it's still ticking, wherever it is."

The company used the “ licking/ticking” slogan starting in the 1950s. Most memorably as live torture tests hosted byJohn Cameron Swayze. As you said in 1969 the United States Time Corporation,the owner of the Timex brand, was renamed the Timex Corporation. I intended no harm or criticism.

I love men’s watches. 40mm face! I love the big look on my wrist it makes my arm look smaller and more dainty and yet it’s cool! Like a girl driving a truck or a jeep. I just ordered my first Timex Waterbury Roman numeral leather strap quarts watch and an extra stainless steel chain link strap to switch out for different occasions! I can’t wait to receive it! I’ve loved my Casio baby g digital watch that I use for work (health care, need to read the minutes quickly). My Timex is for my nice outfits outside of work

I got my first watch for my 10th birthday. It was a Timex. From then on, I never bought anything but Timex. When Casio came out with their super nerdy calculator watches, I thought they looked ridiculous. When the G-Shock line started coming out, I thought they looked like kid’s watches. Eventually, my dad gave me his Omega Speedmaster Professional that he bought new in 1967 before I was even a thought. That was my first taste of watches other than Timex, and my first taste of boutique watches. Still, I’ve had good experiences with Timex and have never been disappointed by any of their products that I’ve bought…well, the watches, I mean. Their watch bracelets can be pretty cheap, but the watches themselves have served me well.

I was born in 1967 my first watch a Manual Wind British Made Timex Watch and I’ve still got it I was given it by my Fathers Parents my Grandparents in 1970 it still works and has just had it’s service it gets serviced every 2 years.
I have the very first Ironman (circa 1986). Pre-Indiglo. It was my grandfather’s… he was a hip, hip dude, and this was his first quartz watch. I’ve been timing it for 207 days and it’s lost a mere 2.6 seconds. It’s the most accurate/precise non-atomic watch I own. I mean, this is 9F territory. In a 35 year old Timex. Amazing stuff. Anyway, great video. Timex retrospectives always put a smile on my face.
I put my Marlin Reissue through the ringer. It goes everywhere and does everything with me. It runs about 15 seconds fast each day, but I don't expect perfect accuracy. I have small wrists, wanted a stainless case with a vintage look, something that I could beat up and easily have repaired. A seagull movement in a 34mm stainless case? Sold.
As a baby I wore a tiny blue timex given to me by my grand Mother. I've seen fotos of myself at 2 years with that watch. Strange, I know, a 2 year old wearing a Timex. Both my families were kind of watch crazy. One of my grand fathers usted 4 at the same time. He was almost blind but used to sincronize the four with a magnifying glass everyday with a radio station in México that only had comercials and the exact time with a beep every minute.
My first watch was a Timex windup. I gift watches to high school and college grads. I have one remaining Ironman - new - beater watch and one remaining Skagen - new- dress watch. I have bought used Timex quartz and used Ironman units. When shtf, I have watches for a group setting to be used in conjunction with low end communication devices.
Great Video! I love my Timex Indiglos. Rolex may be the watch that can get you home if you’re stranded abroad, but who would take a Rolex to a place where they fear being stranded? I’ve been all over Africa, Middle East, and less developed parts of Asia packing only my Timex. I enjoy my Swiss watches at home; but on the road, I want a tough reliable timepiece that doesn’t make me a target. And, at about $35 on Amazon; I don’t worry about scratches either.
I got a bunch. Automatic, windups, and tons of quartz. I really want an electric Dynabeat which you could have mentioned because it was a hybrid pre quartz-electro mechanical watch. Love you too sweetheart!
Timex has introduced an inexpensive quartz series called The Waterbury collection. I've had a few Timexs over the years. I currently own a Metropolitan analog activity tracker and a Waterbury world timer.
Question for you: I have one of the early digital Times watches, silver tone with mesh metal band, rounded rectangular face with black surrounding the small number area. It requires 2 batteries, one for keeping time and one for a light. It came out at he beginning of the digital watch phase before they got really cheap and disposable. It doesn't work right: when I put new batteries in it, the numbers show but fade and are not visible. I think they are supposed to be visible at all times. Do you know if there is somewhere it could be repaired? If you do, would it be worth the cost? I believe it cost about $40 to $45 when brand new. Thank you!
Not going to lie. If you do anything in the darkness, you'd be a fool to pass up a Timex just because it's a Timex. As a nighttime hunter, I only go out with my Timex Expedition on my wrist.

I was born in 67 and when I was 5 yrs old my Grandad taught me to tell the time and he bought me my first ever watch. It was a Timex Sprite. It probably cost under £5 in 1972. Today, those watches are marketed as a vintage military watch and nice ones regularly fetch £100. As a boy I was fascinated with that watch and still had it laying around in a draw until my early 20s. I really don't know what happened to that watch but I so wish I'd looked after it and kept my first ever watch. Im 56 now and could easily buy another one and have considered it many times but it just wouldn't be mine. I cherish the memories of that little Timex which started my fascination with watches which endures today. As a teen I lived through the digital age and owned watches with alarms, dual time, chronographs etc then later in life moved onto the solar watches from Citizen and the Kinetics from Seiko and today im now back into mechanical movements, back where I started in 1972. Great video, it really triggered a lot of memories for me. Thank you.
1978 miltary field style black dialed watch was my 1st ever watch wow such a good lil watch i was 7 yrs old loved it and looking around the vintage Gems are still about for sale... I’ve got 5 Timex watches in my possession at the moment. I have a Dual Shock, an Expedition, and an Easy Reader Date that work, an Easy Reader Day Date that I completely destroyed as a teenager, and an old green dial hand-me-down from my sadly departed grandmother that still runs, albeit at -5,000 seconds per day. My fiancée also has a ladies Timex that she wears on formal occasions. She also has a ladies Casio for outdoorsy adventures and a Tru Time digital for everyday wear.
You did not mention the Timex Electric watch which came out around 1970 and cost less than $25. My grandfather bought one when it first came out and I still own it today.
Timex is also a great way to dip your toe into birth-year watch collecting, given the fact that they have an easy to read date coding system and can be picked up for next to nothing. Just don't expect to get more than you're paying for and they can be fun.
I love timex watches, i owned a lcd quartz watch of them in the late 70s early 80s. It was a bit of an odd ball, it had 2 setting crown's/ knobs on ether side of the case and a sort of hatch you could open with a coin for battery replacement. Does anybody know what type it was?, i would like to hunt one down.
I remember watching Timex spokesman, John Cameron Swayze saying "Timex, takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin' " in the early '60s. They had a series of TV commercials where they would put a timex through different tests like shooting an arrow through a window with a Timex attaached.
I had the original Timex Ironman Triathlon watch (with incandescent backlight) in 1986, and around 1993, I upgraded to the Triathlon Indiglo model. Awesome watches! I still have the Indiglo one, although now I favor wearing a Citizen Eco-drive AT4004-52E "PCAT."

I would be interested in your opinion of the new solar watches Timex has been releasing over the last few years. I have several of their solar watches and they perform well.

At the time it was called the Ingersol Midget. Also in 2018 the Timex Midget came out like the old WWI trench watches. I have both of them.

First watch I've ever bought was a timex expedition scout, I was 15 or 16 back then. I really enjoy it even today and indiglo is awesome.
I have a timex watch of my grandfather from 1968 doesn't run anymore but I will keep it forever.

Get your watch guy to do the internals but leave the dial, hands and case as is.
I can make it run if you're in Europe. Or there are other people in the US who provide timex restoration.

I inherited my Grandfather's Marlin from the 60's and it runs great. I bought a $200 reissue a couple of years ago and it fell apart while winding.
Watching this while wearing my grey 36mm Expedition on a grey Barton strap. One of my least expensive watches and a favorite. Love Indiglo.
Same with my weekender chronograph, it's my work watch the green dial one is gorgeous for what it is

With title like "Watch This BEFORE You Buy A Timex!", I thought this is about things one needs to be aware of before one BUYS a Timex. Build quality, maintenance issues, any caveats much more important for watch ownership than company and product history. I hope more people stop using misleading titles like this, or at least notify others of it in the comment section.

@Sigkim wouldn't it be better to consider the expedition chrono ? If you do consider it, then go for it because it has good 100m WR. Also get the expedition scout chrono- it looks more versatile IMHO.
@@dietznutz1 a good watch is a difficult thing to define. Frankly, if it tells the time adequately and is reliable enough, it’s pretty hard to say that timepiece is not “good”.
Is a Rolex or omega or longings any better watch than a $20 Casio or $40 Timex? If you’re only using it to tell the time, you could argue the quartz movements makes the affordable watches frankly better tools.
Of course, there are reasons people pay for more expensive watches, but that is not to say that they need to in order to get a “good” watch.
To be honest, if someone says their watch is flawless, then I’d say its a good watch no matter what the price.
I love my simple Timex field watch! Lightweight, easy to read, classic design- they’re a great company.
I’ve owned a number of Timex watches. Both quartz and mechanical. They have all been loud tickers. They are the loudest watches I’ve owned.
I had one of the original model Ironman watches when I was a kid. I don't think I got it that first year, but it was within a year or two of that, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My mechanical watch (also a Timex, I think) got set aside pretty quickly. And now things have come full circle and I'm back to mostly mechanical, although I do still have a newer Ironman watch that's perfect for times when there's a high chance of damage.

I have a couple of Timex Dynabeats. For a couple of years just before the quartz revolution these electrics sold ran at 28,800 beats. They hammer away so loud I could hear them on the dresser from bed. Both mid 70's.
Omg Jory I just re- re- located my grandfather's 4014(1) Timex Viscount 4014 2961 - Circa 1961. It needed a new crown and to be cleaned and oiled. He obviously loved it and wore it. I polished the crystal and fitted it with a new brown leather band to dress it up a bit. It is in my weekly rotation. So cool to have a piece of history and my grandfather's watch on my wrist. My brother had a Timex redwing Waterbury Chronograph 45mm, about 5 years ago. It was a nice watch, but he sold it after 3-4 months, because he didn’t feel it it. My friend still has a expedition field watch, but the crown broke a few years ago. I still have a plan to buy a timex q, but I can’t find the gold plated black bezel model anywhere.
Timex was using the “Takes a licking and keeps on ticking” since 1950s using John Cameron Swayze as a spokesman on live TV commercials.
That's right. The Timex brand started in 1950. John Cameron Swayze did live commercials where he torture tested the watch. One night they lost the watch strapped to boat propeller. John said, "I'm sure it's still ticking, wherever it is."
This correct. I’m old enough to remember the commercials. I had a Timex given to me in grade school ca 1962. I hate to say it T3 but your history is flawed.

Timex as a brand started in 1950. The company used the “ licking/ticking” slogan starting in the 1950s. Most memorably as live torture tests hosted byJohn Cameron Swayze. As you said in 1969 the United States Time Corporation,the owner of the Timex brand, was renamed the Timex Corporation. I intended no harm or criticism.

I love men’s watches. 40mm face! I love the big look on my wrist it makes my arm look smaller and more dainty and yet it’s cool! Like a girl driving a truck or a jeep. I just ordered my first Timex Waterbury Roman numeral leather strap quarts watch and an extra stainless steel chain link strap to switch out for different occasions! I can’t wait to receive it! I’ve loved my Casio baby g digital watch that I use for work (health care, need to read the minutes quickly). My Timex is for my nice outfits outside of work

I got my first watch for my 10th birthday. It was a Timex. From then on, I never bought anything but Timex. When Casio came out with their super nerdy calculator watches, I thought they looked ridiculous. When the G-Shock line started coming out, I thought they looked like kid’s watches. Eventually, my dad gave me his Omega Speedmaster Professional that he bought new in 1967 before I was even a thought. That was my first taste of watches other than Timex, and my first taste of boutique watches.
Still, I’ve had good experiences with Timex and have never been disappointed by any of their products that I’ve bought…well, the watches, I mean. Their watch bracelets can be pretty cheap, but the watches themselves have served me well.
I have a Timex that I changed the battery for the first time today. I've owned the watch since 2014.

I love Timex watches ! I own several new and vintage , I'm in my sixties and Timex was The watch of my youth and the famous Takes a licking and keeps on ticking commercials with John Cameron Swazey were great ! That ad campaing goes back much earleir than 1969 .

I was born in 1967 my first watch a Manual Wind British Made Timex Watch and I’ve still got it I was given it by my Fathers Parents my Grandparents in 1970 it still works and has just had it’s service it gets serviced every 2 years.
I have the very first Ironman (circa 1986). Pre-Indiglo. It was my grandfather’s… he was a hip, hip dude, and this was his first quartz watch. I’ve been timing it for 207 days and it’s lost a mere 2.6 seconds. It’s the most accurate/precise non-atomic watch I own. I mean, this is 9F territory. In a 35 year old Timex. Amazing stuff.

I put my Marlin Reissue through the ringer. It goes everywhere and does everything with me. It runs about 15 seconds fast each day, but I don't expect perfect accuracy. I have small wrists, wanted a stainless case with a vintage look, something that I could beat up and easily have repaired. A seagull movement in a 34mm stainless case? Sold.
I think of John Cameron Swayze with a watch attached to an outboard motor. I have my first watch, a timex bought in 1972. It still runs.

As a baby I wore a tiny blue timex given to me by my grand Mother. I've seen fotos of myself at 2 years with that watch. Strange, I know, a 2 year old wearing a Timex. Both my families were kind of watch crazy. One of my grand fathers usted 4 at the same time. He was almost blind but used to sincronize the four with a magnifying glass everyday with a radio station in México that only had comercials and the exact time with a beep every minute.
My first watch was a Timex windup.
I gift watches to high school and college grads. I have one remaining Ironman - new - beater watch and one remaining Skagen - new- dress watch.
I have bought used Timex quartz and used Ironman units. When shtf, I have watches for a group setting to be used in conjunction with low end communication devices.
Great Video! I love my Timex Indiglos. Rolex may be the watch that can get you home if you’re stranded abroad, but who would take a Rolex to a place where they fear being stranded? I’ve been all over Africa, Middle East, and less developed parts of Asia packing only my Timex. I enjoy my Swiss watches at home; but on the road, I want a tough reliable timepiece that doesn’t make me a target. And, at about $35 on Amazon; I don’t worry about scratches either.
Totally agree when you’re on the road in some tough places don’t make yourself a target. Leave your expensive watches at home.

Timex has introduced an inexpensive quartz series called The Waterbury collection. I've had a few Timexs over the years. I currently own a Metropolitan analog activity tracker and a Waterbury world timer.

Question for you: I have one of the early digital Times watches, silver tone with mesh metal band, rounded rectangular face with black surrounding the small number area. It requires 2 batteries, one for keeping time and one for a light. It came out at he beginning of the digital watch phase before they got really cheap and disposable. It doesn't work right: when I put new batteries in it, the numbers show but fade and are not visible. I think they are supposed to be visible at all times. Do you know if there is somewhere it could be repaired? If you do, would it be worth the cost? I believe it cost about $40 to $45 when brand new. Thank you!
Not going to lie. If you do anything in the darkness, you'd be a fool to pass up a Timex just because it's a Timex. As a nighttime hunter, I only go out with my Timex Expedition on my wrist.

I bought my Timex weekender about 5 years ago , i like it very much , wear it most days and still has the original battery . It also came with a spare strap .
Expedition Scout is one of the most popular field watches around. Great affordable watch with everything you'd want or need.
My first watch was a Timex when I started at the 'big school' in the 60s. Still remember my pride as I looked at it, and also the Ad campaign of the time with the famous Jingle ~ ' Ring the bells with Xmas Tidings, Ticker ticker Timex, Tra La La "
I was born in 67 and when I was 5 yrs old my Grandad taught me to tell the time and he bought me my first ever watch. It was a Timex Sprite. It probably cost under £5 in 1972. Today, those watches are marketed as a vintage military watch and nice ones regularly fetch £100. As a boy I was fascinated with that watch and still had it laying around in a draw until my early 20s. I really don't know what happened to that watch but I so wish I'd looked after it and kept my first ever watch. Im 56 now and could easily buy another one and have considered it many times but it just wouldn't be mine. I cherish the memories of that little Timex which started my fascination with watches which endures today. As a teen I lived through the digital age and owned watches with alarms, dual time, chronographs etc then later in life moved onto the solar watches from Citizen and the Kinetics from Seiko and today im now back into mechanical movements, back where I started in 1972. Great video, it really triggered a lot of memories for me. Thank you.

1978 miltary field style black dialed watch was my 1st ever watch wow such a good lil watch i was 7 yrs old loved it and looking around the vintage Gems are still about for sale... I guess the weekender was its replacement as look very similar...have a few timex myself never will knock timex been around along time..great review of there history ...

What does any of this have to do with a decision to buy a watch
I’ve got 5 Timex watches in my possession at the moment. I have a Dual Shock, an Expedition, and an Easy Reader Date that work, an Easy Reader Day Date that I completely destroyed as a teenager, and an old green dial hand-me-down from my sadly departed grandmother that still runs, albeit at -5,000 seconds per day. My fiancée also has a ladies Timex that she wears on formal occasions. She also has a ladies Casio for outdoorsy adventures and a Tru Time digital for everyday wear.
Can someone please tell me what movement Timex uses?
You did not mention the Timex Electric watch which came out around 1970 and cost less than $25. My grandfather bought one when it first came out and I still own it today.

Timex is also a great way to dip your toe into birth-year watch collecting, given the fact that they have an easy to read date coding system and can be picked up for next to nothing. Just don't expect to get more than you're paying for and they can be fun.

I love timex watches, i owned a lcd quartz watch of them in the late 70s early 80s.
It was a bit of an odd ball, it had 2 setting crown's/ knobs on ether side of the case and a sort of hatch you could open with a coin for battery replacement.
Does anybody know what type it was?, i would like to hunt one down.
I remember watching Timex spokesman, John Cameron Swayze saying "Timex, takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin' " in the early '60s. They had a series of TV commercials where they would put a timex through different tests like shooting an arrow through a window with a Timex attaached.
I had the original Timex Ironman Triathlon watch (with incandescent backlight) in 1986, and around 1993, I upgraded to the Triathlon Indiglo model. Awesome watches! I still have the Indiglo one, although now I favor wearing a Citizen Eco-drive AT4004-52E "PCAT."
Great video on the history of Timex. I have a number of Timex watches, and I like the Marlin reissues. I have both a hand-wind and an automatic. I would be interested in your opinion of the new solar watches Timex has been releasing over the last few years. I have several of their solar watches and they perform well.
