I love his coverage of current chess (of course) but Antonio is really at his best when he dives into history. It's what separates his channel from the others. He's a great storyteller. Looking forward to Steinitz.
Agad is a consummate storyteller, with the bard's ability to layer coincidence and happenstance into folklore. Today Agad enables a telex machine to have pride of place in the lexicon of chess history!
I learned computer programming on a telex machine at my high school connected to a local university's DEC PDP-11 minicomputer. Programs were stored on punched paper tape. Until fax machines became affordable in the late 1980s, we used telex every day to communicate with Asian factories.
One amazing thing about this game is: The whole game played around how to capture the double pawn, creating weakness on other sides of the board but with that intention in mind. And yet the double pawn was never captured
Like nimzowitsch said: The threat is stronger than the execution. The threat of capturing the weak pawn dictated the entire game even though it was never executed on.
19:20 - 18th place - I can totally imagine Hans Niemann walking into a tournament with a top hat and a moustache going "Hans? Who is this Hans? My name is....Heinz.....Lehmann"

19:00 but how can white prevent black from playing Nb3, attacking the bishop, and, with the threat of queening the pawn, force white to sacrifice the bishop for the passed pawn, and thereby trade down to an equalish and maybe drawn endgame?

It turned out the Fischer's accusations were correct. After the fall of the old USSR, Soviet GMs admitted that the Soviet Sports Committee pressured Soviet players into collusion.
Such a great game. Imagine what Fischer could have done with all the training help from chess engines and data bases today? No one would be able to beat him - not even Magnus.

I did the same in the mid 70s. Stored the programs on paper tape
One amazing thing about this game is: The whole game played around how to capture the double pawn, creating weakness on other sides of the board but with that intention in mind.
And yet the double pawn was never captured
That's is a fundamental element of positional chess. Time invested in defending weaknesses will most likely cause other, more serious weaknesses
@@talphazero1036 That's a more elegant way of putting it :) . This game help me realize this, I will keep it in mind for my games
Like nimzowitsch said: The threat is stronger than the execution. The threat of capturing the weak pawn dictated the entire game even though it was never executed on.
Cool throwback, always happy to see a Fischer game, thanks Agad!
fischer vs bill gates
why is this so accurate
😂😂
Yay, exactly. The coloured version of the photo shows remarkable resemblance

I believe agadmator DID cover this game a few years back. I won't tell you who won.
"I add status to any tournament I attend" - Robert James Fischer
He even adds status when he plays via telex haha
Wouldn't this make it the first "online" chess game?
Probably wasn't the first ever game played over telex
Nope, long time ago already people played games by correspondence
I've been playing online chess since the 1800s

When agadmator posts a Fischer video, it's a nice day!

I find myself watching more and more of your analyzed games. Sent a token of my appreciation for your time.
9:00 "b4 is pretty much the best move in any position...in this game b4 really is the best move..." Only from the mind of Antonio.
I'm laughing in my mind 😂
A tactical tussle extraordinaire. Bobby doesn't let up for a single tempo.
Totally agree. Especially when I saw the headline - "...crushes..." - rather than a steamrolling, Fischer just crushes with tactical asphyxiation!
Fischer versus Smyslov! With Fischer inspired by Steinitz..a Monday treat!
Bill has been playing against world chams for a long time. Damn!
09:40 - 10:15 haha what a mind-game about b4-move for both sides!
and noone touched the b4-square!!
Inredible and hilarious the same time :)
So cool. Love the telex way of doing moves. Would loved to see pics of that and fisher wherever he was doing the game.
I love it when Morphy gets a mention
It was played at the famous Marshall Chess Club, not Manhatten CC.
Yes, it was at the Marshall. Frank's wife. Caroline, was still there. I was there for the match, sometimes in the Telex room.
This is weird! I've started playing the Ruy Lopez and I looked through this game as part of my study -- then I see, exactly a week before I studied it independently, you had uploaded a video of it! Now I can watch your video to check my analysis with yours haha
I'm convinced. Chess just revolves around b4.
Che Guevara organized this tournament? Wow! That's one of the most interesting things that I've heard in a while! Awesome fact.
19:00 but how can white prevent black from playing Nb3, attacking the bishop, and, with the threat of queening the pawn, force white to sacrifice the bishop for the passed pawn, and thereby trade down to an equalish and maybe drawn endgame?

The doubled unsupported D-pawn the Smislov allowed put him on his heels for the rest of the game.
