Garter snakes are gorgeous. I have a Checkered garter snake I rescued but to have a San Francisco Garter would be a dream. If you breed them put me down for a couple please. I feed rat pinks to my girl too as they have different nutrition to a mouse, I also give her hopper mice (the stage after pinkies in size) 🐍🐍🐍🐍

What size enclosure would you recommend for an adult? I’ve been doing some research but people tend to say different things and i’d like to know what i’d be facing when they grow up. Would 60cm (length) by 40 be sufficiënt? Thanks in advance!
If i look up Swedish law, one full grown garter snake needs 0,25 kvm of space. Yours 60cm by 40cm is 0,24. So I would personally say that it should be fine. But if you keep multiple garter snakes, which I would recommend, then you would need something bigger :)
I'm not JohanExoticGlobal, but I can say a little about this. SF garters are protected and illegal to keep in the USA, but laws are different elsewhere. In Europe they can be bred in captivity like any other variety of garter snake. None of the garter snakes are native to Europe and you can't import rare varieties from the US, so there's no concern of European breeders poaching wild SF garters.
You are one lucky guy. Man, all my favorite gardeners snakes are only pride garden snake that would ever buy. The red side is nice as well, but that San Francisco is a beauty. I guess I will have to admire yours for now. However, my son does live in California and I did live for 17 years, so hey, you never know.😂😂😂😂😂😂
I just rescued a baby garter snake (barely 6 inches long) so itty bitty, I’m not sure how to get him to eat. I also don’t know how small to cut the worms up 😬
Hmm.. I never dealt with a picky garter snake. It might just be stress. Was it a long time since you rescued him? From my research I have learned that garter snakes prefer smaller prey items instead of one big item.. So when I cut up my worms I usually cut them very small. You can also try to heat up the pinkies in warm water a bit before. That can also help when the prey has natural body heat.
Question. How did you get your hands on a San Francisco Garter Snake? They are endangered over here. I don't even think you can pick one up from the wild and just handle them without getting fined (if they catch you). I am from SF and used to see them all the time when I was a wee lad but by the time I got into herping (in the early 90s) they were no where to be seen (except out by the airport). I'm not a narc! so just asking. They are beautiful snakes. I remember when I was into the hobby the owner of a reptile store I used to frequent wanted to pay me to look for them. I always turned it down because the risks outweigh the reward.
I love this comment! I have always been curious to hear from someone that lives local to these amazing snakes! I have heard something similar, that you're not even allowed to touch them in the wild. Idk how they got imported to Europe. Some rumor says that the whole population of captive san francisco garters in Europe comes from one single pair that was smuggled out of the US way back in the days. If this is true or not is another story. In Sweden I know of 2 breeders, well 3 now if you count me! And they are actually completely legal to keep as pets here. Kind of ironic since I heard how protected they are in US. Thank you again for that comment. Super interesting to read!
@@JohanExoticGlobal I wish your breeders (or you) could send a SF Garter Snake my way! LOL. Beautiful snakes though. Nice to see some people keeping them alive.
I hope it’s not too late to ask. Could you switch the UVB with supplements? If yes, would D3 be enough? Considering they would get the calcium from the pinkies
