The song was submitted as an early demo by Madonna to Sire Records, who gave the green light to record the single after her previous release, "Everybody", had become a dance hit. This was the follow-up single to "Holiday", Madonna's first big hit. Despite the suggestive lyrics and a steamy video featuring the singer writhing on a street, the song was only a minor success. Still, it had enough momentum to keep Madonna in the spotlight after "Holiday", which she used to her advantage. Madonna is the sole writer of this song. She writing her own songs was an early sign of her blonde ambition. The track was produced by Reggie Lucas and her then-boyfriend John "Jellybean" Benitez. The track was recorded with a LinnDrum, an early programmable machine with real drum samples. Reggie Lucas and Leslie Ming did the programming. Paul Pesco played the guitar part. Madonna played this song on her debut tour in 1985, but it didn't reappear in the setlist until the 2004 Re-Invention Tour, where she accompanied the song with electric guitar.
