  • Something a little different again from me - I always like new challenges! Here's the 'how to' on converting the ancient Airfix kit for the last BR steam locomotive ever made 'Evening Star' into another 9F 'Black Prince' which is still a running preserved loco.

This is a great job and video. I've two lurking in the queue bought last month from Hattons. Decals are now included for several examples. The yellow/red axlebox covers were to show Timken roller bearings were fitted

I remember putting mine together in 1966😉 Your vid took me right back. Alas the real 9Fs were already on the way out then. I could not or did not quarter the wheels well enough so tore out crank pins. I was gutted (age 11).

The important thing to remember is to enjoy it.Don't put too much pressure on yourself. The more you build the better the results you will get.Keep watching videos on youtube, look at forums, read magazines etc and you'll start to see how you can improve. I'm still learning - there are many more accomplished modellers out there than me!

Thanks for watching! :) I certainly learnt a thing or two on this one , and managed to get a half decent result. There are loads of Airfix kits like these floating around on ebay for a decent price (with the only exception being the 'Schools' class loco which I believe is the rarest), including the lineside stuff. The quality however is shocking....

I used to make kits all the time as a kid - saving up pocket money, getting kits for birthdays and Xmas and the like. Gave it up in my early teens and didn't start again til I was in my early 20s as a way of keeping my mind off depression which I was suffering at the time. I guess I would say at 28 I've been doing it on and off most of my life but with big gaps.I don't force myself to build , I just do it when I feel like it :)

It's a great job. Well done! Reminded me of my youth - on a rainy Saturday coming home from Town with a kit from the Model Shop. Halcyon days!

You got yourself a bargain there... and after what appeared to have been both a fun and interesting modelling session (thanks for great explanatory pictures) you ened up with a superb model!! Well done... :)
I just wish Airfix would re-release these locos and the rolling stock and other rail accesories they used to do in the golden days of yore. I'm sure it would attract a whole load of followers, and would be ideal for interesting dioramas as well as bullking out model railways.. :) :)

these kits are still being made by a company called dapol, who took over the moulds from airfix. a few years ago i built the dapol version of this kit as a workaday 9f loco

those yellow circles on the tender with the red stripe down the middle are the tender axleboxes.

  • @dave41184

Thanks Pete - it hasn't got any better with age! I think Airifx are missing a trick by not doing new moulds of these, but hey it's not up to me what they release!

  • @annlane916

The yellow caps on the ends of the tender axels denote that the axels are fitted with roller bearings.

Yes, I know.. :) But it will set me back a bit more than £3.. :) I did however buy the Dapol kit of 'Stephensons Rocket' in the summer, I believe that was issued by Airfix as well at some point.. :) It'll be hady to when I fancy doing something totally different to my standard output.. :)

Cheers matey , glad you like it. Beware of these ancient Airfix boxings , they are a challenge at best (at worst you will be tearing your hair out!). There are about half a dozen loco kits like this from around the same time, but if you want a trouble free project then go for something from Dapol

  • @Matty_98

Dave the yellow disks are caps for the end of the axle on the tender.

I think it depends on a) the age of the decals and b) the type of solvent you are using. Very old decals will react badly to almost anything , even water. New decals should be fine with most solvents.I wouldn't paint over them and the concentration might be too high. I lightly cover my models with a Humbrolspray can varnish (matt , satin or gloss depending on the finish I want) then put the decals on, then another light coat of varnish to seal it all in.

hey there mate! i have some questions i would like answered :D 1. Do these or can they be fitted with motors?
    2. are the Driving wheels metal?
    Thanks for your time!
    Sam :D

    • @dave41184
      @dave41184  5 років тому

      Hi Sam,
This particular kit is very old, almost as old as the real 9F locomotives. The kit is all plastic, no metal. I think you would struggle to motorise something like this for that reason. The running gear would probably just snap. I'd have a look around for an old Evening start OO Hornby locomotive, there must be lots around!
