  • This small locomotive is a so-called saddle tank locomotive where the water tank sits on top of the boiler like a saddle sits atop a horse. In the UK saddle tanks were popular for smaller locomotives made for shunting work and/or in industrial use. The loco in this video was originally purchased by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (L&YR) as Class 21 and a total of 60 were made between 1886 and 1910. The wheelbase was a mere 5 ft 9 in (1.75 m), so the locos could navigate sharply curved sidings during shunting duties. The type is often referred to as a 'Pug' which either refers to a Scottish dialect word meaning ‘monkey’, and so inferring an ugly appearance, or the name is derived from the small sturdy Pug dog with a snub nose, wrinkled face, and squarish body. L&YR was later taken over by the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), which gave the locomotives the classification 0F, and the merged into British Railways in 1948. At that time 23 'Pugs' remained in service. The last was withdrawn in 1964. Two "Pugs" have survived into preservation. The saddle tank gave a greater water supply, but limited the size of the boiler and restricted access to it for cleaning. Furthermore, the locomotive has a higher centre of gravity and hence must operate at lower speeds. The driver's vision may also be restricted, again restricting the safe speed. Water in the tank is slightly pre-heated by the boiler, which reduces the loss of pressure found when cold feedwater is injected into the boiler. However, if the water becomes too hot, injectors lose efficiency and can fail. For this reason, the tanks often stopped short of the hotter and uninsulated smokebox.
The kit is a 'OO'-scale polystyrene kit originally made by Kitmaster all the way back in the 1960s. The moulds were subsequently sold to Airfix then passed on to Dapol. As can be seen I basically fooled around with the kit and the end result does not represent any particular prototype. The bright orange/red livery was, however, inspired by a small series of British locos employed by one of the biggest gas works in Copenhagen "Østre Gasværk".

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, the small 'Pugs' are very cute - like the dog breed of the same name 🐾

great looking little engine. It really is amazing that this kit still is around. My dad bought med that loco in the early 1960s, my first kit, made by Airfix. thanks for the video ! and i wish you a happy easter !

I do appreciate your videos very much and this one was indeed enjoyable. Furthermore, the finished model is very nice. Especially if one considers that the castings of these models are so old (as far as I know), hence the fit is usually not the best. Instead, there will be a lot of putty and sandpaper used.
In addition to that, I'm usually not that keen on videos with music, as peoples taste in music differs a lot. Therefore, I often watch videos like these with the sound off. This time, however, it was very nice and soft jazz is truly spot on ... at least for me. Thumbs up from Sweden

Thank you Sweden! The mold for this model must be ancient. The model originally came out in 1961! Check out my blog for more details: www.sundborg.wordpress.com
The music is from a UA-cam channel called Freesound. All their music is royalty free for everyone to enjoy and use including for UA-cam content producers (like me) - so they deserve a lot of credit. Not least for their jazz-tracks!

Is it able to be pushed along?

Not the way I built it, but according to the instructions you should be able to build it with moving wheels. It’s just that I only wanted a stationary model so I glued everything in place. 🚂
