Rosebud - kitmaster HO - OO plastic locomotives

  • In 1959 Rosebud of Great Britain brought out the fun Kitmaster plastic models of European and American locomotives and passenger coaches in HO (OO) scale
    These were static models, never intended to be run on a layout. Most were European prototype, however they made a great little model of the General, famous Civil War locomotive made famous by Buster Keaton and later Disney in films about the Great Locomotive Chase between the General and the Texas.
    Most sold for between 49 and 99 cents ($6.00 - $15.00 in 2018 dollars) and go for about $15 - $30 on Ebay today.

    Our family had a hobby shop in Philadelphia, and we frequently went to the AHM warehouse in North Philadelphia! We knew Bernie Paul, who was head of AHM. We had tons of the Rosebud Kitmaster models! They were the start of my screwing around at a young age!

    In addition to the 4-4-0, Rosebud Kitmaster also made another U.S. steam locomotive, a New York Central, Hudson.

    At 3:46 that is the Triang OO scale HO gauge operating model of the 1829 condition of Stephenson's Rocket as built for the Rainhill trials.
    Triang , now renamed as Hornby after Hornby collapsed in 1964, has recently made a much more accurate Rocket model and rolling stock.
    Impressive to look at but the DCC ready wiring to the tender make it very delicate.
    Hornby plan to release a model of Stephenson's earlier Locomotion number one of 1825, in the next year.
    The has been after the sales success of these early models , like the 1838 Lion that has been made by both Hornby and Rapido. Rapido in Titfield Thunderbolt movie form.

      Toy Man Television I don't know if Dapol have stockists in the US, but I can direct you to their website.
      Their home page is
      www.dapol.co.uk
      And their kit kit section is
      www.dapol.co.uk/shop/model-accessories/self-assembly-oo-kits
      They do ship world wide.
      The moulds are originals so a bit warn, hence some flash. They use a softer styrene now to preserve the moulds.
      Their RTR stuff is well up to modern specs.
      Best regards John

    When it's that hot at your home, then that is a great time to come visit the San Francisco Bay Area! S. F. Has 2 small museums that might be of interest to you. I believe that you may have visited the Cable Car Museum located at 1201 Mason St. It shares the building where the Cable Powerhouse and Cable Car Barn are.
    The second one is called the Market Street Railway Museum located at 77 Stewart St. near the Ferry Building! Although both are quite small they are filled with historic San Francisco memorabilia!

      Andy's right, a class 08 shunter, a switcher in the U.S. Excellent for assembling heavy freight trains but as it never passed 30mph, definitely not a main line loco. There are still a few around I believe.

      The MPC model in 1/2 scale, and really accurate. Is not #1 gauge. As the original was 5 foot gauge and later changed to 4 feet 8 1/2 inch, the model is gauged to 2.35 inches. Way wider than G gauge's 1.75 inches. That's not to say you cant use a Kalamooz or something to make one work. Those little OO-HO generals poop up all the time! Let me take a look....

    I take it you (y'all) are over the top collectors! Or, was there a train and model shop in your past? I saw one of the General kits at a shop in Turlock, CA (no longer there) on my honeymoon in '87. I'm kicking myself now that I didn't grab it. I do have the static "Big Boy" (still available) which sits on my "No Track" track next to the roundhouse. The PC had just purchased it and it's being lettered by the crew.

    • @ToyManTelevision
      @ToyManTelevision  5 років тому

      Well both are the case. But mostly we are horders. A collector is just a horder with OCD and a dust rag. And we had a hobby shop in the 70's thru the 80"S? Something like that. And access to other peoples trash heap, attics and basements.

    • @randallhawkinson4727

      One of my favorite t-shirts says, "I'm just a few trains away from being featured on an episode of Horders." I have far too little layout for the 52 year collection of rolling stock. Fortunately, I don't get out as much as y'all do. Now, if Diane would just let me have the rest of downstairs....

    Yepper! You guys, Dale, has collected a wide range of railroading kits. Here is a legitimate question: What is that heat in the attic doing to your, already aging plastic engines and kits? The high temps are just about over but, perhaps a dedicated duct to the uppstairs can postpone some damage. I don't know, just thinking out loud. You two take care. Greg and Jeanne

      We have AC up there. It never gets over 85 or so. We can keep it 75 but then the power bill is a bit shocking and frost forms on the cars. This works. So far all the models seem happy up there. Its ok too to go up and get stuff but if you hang around it gets a bit uncomfortable and we gave up discomfort for Lent. The Good Father said that's not how that works and we said in our faith it does. Best stuff to give up for Lent is stuff you don't want as I see it. OK, not the trash, that's crass, but if you have like some old shoes or something..... or feelings like discomfort....

  • @scottfirman
    @scottfirman 5 років тому

    Won't all that heat damage your models? I would never store my expensive old models in a hot environment, can't be good. Some of what you have, I remember building as a kid. I don't ever remember that brand,mainly because some were operating or the quality was bad. Lindburg models were molded right here in my town,well the airplanes were. Funny,I remember going to that plant in 1978 to drop off something. It didn't dawn on me they made models there. It was a tiny place, mabe a dozen people worked there.

      Kitmaster made a powered four wheel bogie type mechanism to be put under one of the four wheel vans or replacing a bogie of one of their Mark 1 British Railways coach models.
      I drove one put under the Kitmaster model of a full length Diesel Blue Pullman train. This was on an award winning exhibition layout based on a Western Region junction station whose name escapes me now.
      That motorised Kitmaster Blue Pullman was very much in advance of the Triang model and got a lot of admiring looks. Built to a very high standard by the layout owner with lots of extra wheel pickup and fine scale metal wheels it ran very well for the entire three days of the exhibition.
      The powering units are rare to find but work far better than the Perfecta idea.
