  • Apple's case against Epic did not go great for them. Sadly, doesn't seem like they plan to change much. Their monopoly over iOS app installations is bad for developers, users, and innovation in software as a whole, and I sincerely hope we see some change.
    But sure, let me know my take on the Magic Mouse is bad.

    The Steam comparison is missing the point. If you don't like the 30% cut, you can buy your games elsewhere. In fact, Epic's own store is the perfect example of such a choice. Apple could charge what they liked, if they *allowed* other ways to get software or even content on these devices, and then developers and users could exchange money elsewhere.
    The idea that Apple wanted 30% of a monthly Netflix subscription, where Netflix is carrying 100% of the content licensing, astronomical bandwidth etc. Valve only takes their cut of microtransactions if the developer uses their wallet software. They're not forced to, and are not prevented from using another service.

Valve maintains it's hold on the market because it provides The Best experience for both developers and players.

A lot of steam users are literally like "if it's not on steam i won't play it" even with steam's ui being godawful as it is... people are just lazy. 30% is just excessive no matter how you cut it and there's no world in which valve is providing that much value to the devs, they were just first.

      I still think most gamers don't understand this, but when you buy a game I would HOPE that you're aiming to support the game dev, not the store front. When people actively advocate against Epic, you're at the same time advocating for giving devs less revenue. As a dev, if you buy my game on Epic, I get 18% more from that sale while you spend the exact same amount out of your own pocket. But you'd rather give Valve 30% and less money to the dev, just so you can avoid giving that 12% to Epic.

  • @epicmap
    @epicmap 5 місяців тому +3

    The problem with Epic's 12% cut on the Epic Games Store (EGS) versus 30% on Steam is that the EGS offers less perceived value to the consumer. In my opinion, it comes down to the features and the level of polish of the EGS compared to Steam. While EGS has made some improvements in recent years, it still feels like a rushed, unfinished product compared to Steam. It lacks many of the features that gamers have come to expect from a mature digital storefront, such as a robust community and support systems(such as forums), a user-friendly interface, and a wide range of supported platforms, not even mentioning Valve's proton efforts for Linux.
    While Epic may have attracted developers with its competitive revenue share, it has not been well received by gamers. This is understandable, as the EGS offers little in the way of additional features or benefits that would make it a more attractive platform for consumers, not just developers. Generally it feels like Epic didn't care much about its users experience, or they believe the developers are the only users they need to care about. So for me it's not surprising that gamers prefer Steam.

    • @arturpaivads
      @arturpaivads 5 місяців тому

      If you put a plus there that Epic seems to care less about the community itself or at least misunderstand them. While Valve actively tries to reach their community.

It may be for their own benefit? Almost certainly but its better than a company that basically says "fuck you" to your customer...
      As an former TF2 player I'm sad to the state of the game, also with other questionable recent attitudes that Valve is doing.
      My point is that they could pretty much shove their customers away and just keep selling games, and in that situation I could see EGS being far more relevant.
      I don't think Valve wants to be a game dev anymore, they keep CS just because its a money machine like Fortnite is for Epic... TF2 is basically dead... You see their efforts in other things like VR, handhelds, hell, Linux drivers, but games? Well...
