The Waterboys as always excellent, seen them at Bedford Park along with The Hothouse Flowers and Van Morrison, what a lineup.
My 6 year old granddaughter and her father were riding in my car I was listening to Fisherman Blues At the end my granddaughter goes “How did he do that (Steve Wickam) He almost made me cry!!” My son said something derogatory about it my granddaughter looks at him scornfully and said “will you play it again grampee?” Of course I did

Apart from the great music of The Waterboys, compare the lyrics of Mike Scott, for example in Long Strange Golden Road and November Tail, to the lyrics of 95% of famous "pop artists or rock stars" that call themselves "writers of lyrics" with sentences like "I love you, do you love me too?"... Mike is a genius in many ways, and his lyrics are fantastic!

Bass player David Hood started his career playing with the Mystics and as a backup musician at FAME Studios. He went on to co-found Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, where he produced songs for Willie Nelson, Cher and others. He played bass on albums by Boz Scaggs, Aretha Franklin, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, Bugs Bunny, Traffic, the Staple Singers, Frank Black, Odetta, John Hiatt, Etta James, John Altenburgh, Johnny & The MoTones and Percy Sledge. Hood appeared in 2009 on Klaus Voormann's solo album A Sideman's Journey. He participated in the latest Waterboys album, Modern Blues, recorded mainly in Nashville, and is currently on tour with them.
Hood's son, Patterson Hood, is the frontman and one of two (formerly three) songwriters for Drive-By Truckers.

@Chad Hoskins - they were superb! Tight, super-professional and what amazed me more than anything was how they really seemed to enjoy themselves - a real party. No horns I'm afraid, but 2 female backing singers that made all the difference.

@@vrossi2596 100% agree. I remember Mike being asked one time in an interview (after the Fishermans Blues album), "So where are The Waterboys now". Mike instantly replied, " You're talking to them".
Search for The Waterboys 'The Pan Within' 2012 reunion at Spiddal. I was sitting next to the guy that video'd it. It was a small 200 capacity gig for funding a local Lifeboat. The guy who got me in there, was a fella who I had been working with for years. A very unassuming and quiet guy. Lovely lad. I never made the connection until he told me one weekend that he was going to see his brother playing at a gig. "Oh! Your brother's in a band? What are they called?", said I. "The Waterboys", came the reply, " Do you know them?". "Do I fucking what" says I, I've been following them for eons, since Pagan Place, I even met my wife during the This is the Sea release". Turns out he was Steve Wickhams younger brother. I was gobsmacked. The following week, he covertly secured tickets for this gig.
Look, needless to say, he organised for me and 3 mates to attend, VIP Treatment, met all the guys while drinking the night away. Steve Wickham especially, is a true gent. What a gig! Serious stuff. I'm going to this Púca gig dressed as a goat in honour of them.
Paddy Wickham, if you're reading this, and I know I said it before a hundred times, fair fucking play to ya!

Something like "Long Strange Golden Road" comes out of a band maybe one time in their career and even for the Waterboys it's the best song in decades. Not to say that their work during the past thirty years isn't good. Yes, there are quite some good Waterboys songs on their recent albums, but very few with magic for me personally.
