Not every bite is the same, sometimes its a feeding bite, a reaction bite or even a territorial bite. So each bite kind of contains its own little element of hookset. I think a territorial bite can initially be a swipe or a knock at the bait, but then transform into feeding behavior. Not sure if that is true, its my own thoughts, but it definitely helps with waiting and being patient on the hookset. Great video Mike, love the way your brain works.

Jared Kiernan those behaviors determine how I will be setting hook that day and what bait I’m throwing. I love my citizen 7’s but if they aren’t aggressively feeding I’m probably not going to keep it tied on for too long. Now that I have the citizen 6 I will be downsizing to those and swinging on them when they are in that swiping mood.
I’ve had many days they knock the living shit out of my citizen 7 but instantly spit it- same goes for my rising sons. Those days are just frustrating lol.
Also, I’ve noticed keeping the rod tip pointed at the bait helps pick up slack line faster and my hookup ratio is far more successful.

Studying our selves in our own videos is the best advice! I’ve improved my hooks ups immensely this year and I think when you say reel in until you feel the weight of the fish will help me even more! I still get a little tigger happy...

Explains 1000% why I've missed the ones I have on the citizen compared to the ones I've landed. Went back and watched a video i posted and saw those bumps and instead of reeling up I just swung on it. More I thought back on the misses, every single one was a bump, swing, and a miss... much appreciated info Mike 👊🏽🤘🏽

I was able to avoid losing fish on these baits when I started fishing them, because i had already seen this video and knew to reel into them before hitting them. Great advice, and kept me from losing some nice fish that I otherwise would have. Another reason WCZ is one of the best YT channels going! Thanks Mike

i agree 100%. Due to my location in the country smallmouth are predominantly the flavor of bass i get to chase. I learned early on to give the fish time to choke the bait, if for nothing else, to compensate for the actual physical limitations of smallmouth bass. Also the point you brought up about how long you actually have to set yourself up a solid hookset is dead on. I have seen smallmouth hold a bait in there mouth and let you drag them all the way to the boat (kayak in my case) and spit it when they see you. But i believe from my experience keeping pressure in the fish is key. Anytime i just went slack line and watched they will spit it much faster. Great info as always!

Another great video, Mike. Always very insightful, and educational. You said when you first started throwing The big soft baits that you missed some big ones because you swung too early and didnt reel down first. It's a process that ALL of us would have to learn, over time, from personal experience....except YOU make videos that give us that insight, so we get a chance to speed up the learning process by learning from your mistakes rather than from our own. Very well done. Taking this to the bank!

Good technique! It's pretty much the same as a worm or jig hook set with the big softbait and with hardbaits it's like setting the hook with a big crankbait. Basically it's like this:
Single hook - reel into the fish and hit em hard
Treble hook - reel into the fish and give it a sweep to the side.
We're talking about extra heavy rods and 20,25, and 30lb+ lines here though. Can't ever be afraid to hit the fish with a hard set

Something I learned years..... ago......it was from one of the Big Three Bill Dance, Roland Martin or Jimmy Houston. One of them explained the application for fishing big worms. When fishing softswimbaits after a fish hits it I'll do a quick one one thousand, two one thousand, three one thousand in my head to make sure the bass has time to get it in it's mouth then I'll reel down and drop the hammer on them. Works for me. Note I also slime the baits up with a fish scent ex. Bass Dynasty, Pro Cure, Smelly Jelly etc. I do this to give myself the biggest advantage at catching bass. I do this on both soft and hard baits hope this helps someone in their pursuit of Big Green Bass. * Practice Catch and Release so someone else can enjoy catching the same fish*. Time to go fishing👍👊👊👊

I learned the hard way not to swing on first contact. I missed a lot of fish before I figured it out. I started doing exactly what Mike said about 6 months ago and immediately started landing more fish. My bite to hook-up to landing fish ratio definitely increased. And I’ve witnessed friends chase they’re own tail all day, swinging for the fences on fish at first contact and consistently missing every time.
So much great information that Mike puts out, these videos are priceless.

My hooksets aren't the only thing that are premature 😂😂😂 for real though, this video can be an absolute game changer for the person willing to listen and apply the knowledge being dropped. I think alot of the time it can be chalked up to excitment...sometimes I can go hours or days without a bite and when I finally get that bite, it's almost like a bad habit where I tend to just swing...no reeling down, no feeling the fish, just excitment and 9/10 times I will miss that fish. Swimbaiting is a technique but anybody can apply this "waiting to feel the fish" to any style of fishing I feel. Also I think alot of guys talk shit and they dont even have the "correct" equipment to be throwing these big softys...maybe they are throwing it on mono or something with alot of stretch that doesnt exactly allow them to drive that hook home. Anyways, love the videos, respect the shit out of what your doing over there..and can we talk about these consistent uploads!!!!!!

Hey just a thought but that initial contact hit you were mentioning may be a strike too disorient and hurt the fish (your bait) and that second strike is the committed bite, they’ve recorded this behavior with trolling techniques on many predatory fish, it’s quite amazing

personally I don't even use exposed hook soft baits, to me the appeal of soft baits is their realism and to me if those fish can see a hook it dramatically decreases the amount of bites I get. And these are NY fish who don't see these big baits often. Fishing with a weedless soft bait gives me so much more confidence, especially once you figure out how to hook the fish on em

fish braid to leader, greatly increase your hook to land ratio. Plus, it saves you a ton of money long term and gives you much better sensitivity. unless you are using something like Shooter, which only has about 5-6% stretch, your flouro probably has just as much stretch as mono so big beast hooks will not penetrate well. i know a lot of people are so scared of their connection knot breaking that they won't even try it but once you practice with regular bass baits and perfect your knots you can then throw big baits as well and not worry about it snapping. if you can get over your fear and your fishing ability will go up a level.

Ive seen that multiple contact while sight fishing in the spring. Alot of time i think they just snap at it and try to wound it, check it or whatever. Theres a huge difference in that check than the bite. I learned patience buy being forced to. I lost so many fish at first, now ill let them snap it and swim around with the very end of ot in there mouths and wait until they suck it in and crush down. Had a 8+ on a bed that would just nibble on the pinchers of a 6"craw trailer on a mop jig. Thats the only bait she would look at. I wish i wouldve had big baits back then!!!

one more thing, ill try to keep this short. Im wondering about your thoughts on drag setting. i predominately target smallmouth but several times a year I'm able to go after the green fish. due to my location in the country, realistically the biggest large mouth I'm going to encounter is at a max 10lb, more likely 7 or 8 for our northern strain. With that being said for both species i keep my drag locked all the way down because I'm almost 100% certain I'm not going to swing on something thats weight alone could cause my line to break. What I'm curious about is what you and the rest of the anglers who live in a region where a true giant is possible practice? I'm sure, just like everything else its subjective and everybody has their own opinion, none of which are wrong as it applies to the anglers specific "style" maybe if you revisit this it could start a healthy discussion and sharing of perspectives.

I have noticed during certain summer time periods when fish are more aggressive, I have smaller fish going after my large beast hook style baits than other times during the season. Sometimes smaller and bigger fish dont get the bait far enough in there mouth to get the hook since it is so close to the head (assuming they hit it from behind) and switching to a line through kinda setup with a stinger hook further back can get those fish hooked more often. How do you feel about fishing line through setups on these style baits? Great video also, thanks!

Is this a subliminal message to get ready for a battles trout drop????
It is really amazing how the forward motion of reeling does not make fish let go. In my experience keeping a steady retrieve actually makes the fish commit more and get the bait further back in its mouth. That’s when you will really feel the weight and be able to drive the hook.
Another thing, how many other guys have had a terrible hookset but some how the fish keeps the bait in it mouth all the way to the boat? A few times I’ve gotten fish all the way to the boat just to have them let go and me realize the hook never penetrated.
Keep up the good work Mike!
