Been a distant admirer of Souls-like games for a while but I’ve been put off by the difficulty. Got my ps5 the other day and saw MS was only 16 quid so I thought I might as well give it a go. The initial opponents were easy enough (up until the big pikemen) to dispatch without parrying or even hardening but the Grisha thwarted me for about 3 solid hours. I was going to give up but I stumbled across this vid, gave it a watch and then gave the Grisha a right pasting. Still learning the windups for the guys around the start (they’re waaaay harder to parry than the Grisha) but I’m getting there so I might even finish this.
Great video! Helped alot! One thing i dont think anyone's mentioned yet...that was particularly hard for m,me...is too let a lot of attacks just go by, escape from them, and pick the ones you know you can parry. i was trying to parry everything at the beginning and it just wasnt working out well for me, if you know what i mean...
First of all, great video, it helped me tons. I don't mind the "hard to master" aspect of it at all, but what bothers me is that there is no varriety. Once you learn how to parry there is no reason to not do it at every single enemy you can. It's just so effective and the game expierence becomes different. For example: the mini boss in the starting area to the right, with parrying he'll die in 5 strikes, but it'll take you a couple of minutes without (if you don't cheese him against a wall) Obviously ppl like to compare to Sekiro, but blocking has a reason to be there, the whole fighting revolves around it, with the gauges & also with the idea of creating awesome immersive fights. Here it is supposed to be a rewarding option not a skill ceiling that opens up the game. (I don't mean opening up as in making it accessible, I got to the boss without a single parry) That's how I feel about this, would be really interested in hearing your more sophisticated opinion @Fuzzy Bearbarian
All I'm hearing are people saying parrying is too hard, so it's actually a pleasant surprise to read your comment tbh. But you have a decent point there. Once you master it you feel pretty indestructible. But this is a beta, and who knows what enemies lurk in the rest of the game. Besides, you don't have to only parry. Part of the fun is hardening, parrying, empowered attacks, dodging, the whole works - and who knows how we'll want to play with the other shells or against new enemies/bosses. But still, even then, if parries stay the easiest/best way I won't be unhappy. It's hard to master and kind of more rewarding once you do master it that you can then consistently use it. But I know I won't. I'll be mixing up everything available as it feels great to harden, dodge, parry, empowered attack etc. And some enemies are way more difficult to parry than others, making the risk higher than the reward, so you'll kind of want to use other mechanics instead of parrying on them. Maybe there'll be lots more of those in the full game. We'll see I guess. Also, "sophisticated opinion" made me laugh. :D
I also have a full walkthrough on how to beat the game in four hours without parrying at all which you might find helpful: ua-cam.com/video/0p9TVp6xFuY/v-deo.html and I have a guide on how to get overpowered early if you're playing the Reverie specifically: ua-cam.com/video/1DS9_IwHl1E/v-deo.html Good luck!

Cheers for the awesome, informative vid, I had missed this one so I practised parrying while farming. The learning curve is steep as you mentioned since there are a lot of enemies with different animations.
Yep. Some enemies are just too hard to effectively parry too so it's good to practice and work out which ones you find easy to do, and which ones you're better off hardening/dodging.
Good guide. If the health system were more generous I think more players would be open to parrying. As it is, it often just makes more sense to rely on dodging and hardening to win fights.
I agree. For me, the window for parrying is very unforgiving. And health is very unforgiving as well that I notice a lot of people end up using Endriem for his durability and health bar. I'm a bloodborne player and used to moving without worrying about blocking. Parrying is like second nature to me.
Really, really great and helpful video! So far I like this game a lot and I can live with getting my butt kicked because I generally suck at this kind of game. But there are three things that really peeve me off at the moment. 1. This game is not explaining a lot of things very well. And no, I don't see this as a 'gid gud' kind of problem or as comparable with Dark Souls kicking your butt. Because pretty much every time I've died in DS, I knew it was _my_ fault and that I was, for instance, too cheeky. Which is quite different to dying because the game simply does not tell you how a massively important game mechanic actually works, while kicking your butt so hard that you simply have no time to learn from observation. 2. Being in a fight and getting sniped by some guy 100 meters away that you had no chance seeing. 3. The game massively relying on movement, dodging and moving away from the enemy and then placing you in environments where you get constantly stuck on or into something. You can't help with problems 2 and 3, but you've just helped me a lot with problem number 1. I guess I will have to check out your other videos now, because this was not only helpful, but very well produced. You surely put a lot of work into this, with the slow-mo sequences and the freeze images and all that. EDIT: Sooo, maybe you could do a little video about how to safely kill those incredibly annoying poisonous monster frogs? Yes, I am _that_ bad at this kind of game that even frogs scare the hell out of me.
I didn’t pick up the tarnished seal at the beginning of the game.. I’m fighting the born twice boss and I only found out cause I looked at the control list
The whole game can be beat without it, but it's a lot harder. Although a lot of people struggle with parrying in Mortal Shell so I guess some people will argue it's a lot easier.
I'm pretty determined to practice the parry system and get good at it, thanks for this video, its really helpful. I wonder if this game is going to make me better at the Fromsoft games parry systems too.
I wish the game would hint that u need to parry like this i have spend so much time trying to pry the spear enemy i never succeeded. When i try to pry i die 😅
Yep. I had this bug happen to me several times. It is extremely annoying. The glitch was triggered when i would do the parry without the riposte. The bug would revert to normal after the next riposted parry.... But that's nothing, compared to the bug of being hit by enemies who are already dead!
Oh my god, I'm not the only one who couldn't tell if it was me who sucked at this game or if it was the game that was broken. Turns out I need to get better lol.
Might be a bit of both. I've found since the full release and patch parrying on some enemies can be a bit...inconsistent. Especially on some boss parryable moves. I ended up parrying only if I needed to gain health, and hardening/dodging for the rest.
I hate how parries differ so greatly in every game. If the timing was literally just before the weapon hits you this wouldn't be so hard but every game's parry differs so greatly that it's not always right before it hits your player so the timing doesn't make sense unless you spend hours learning it or just watch one awesome video like this :)
After one hour I'm not even getting close to parrying first werewolf boss. Though helpful video, didn't know you need resolve to parry. Holy shiite the weird rules in this game.
Lol, most people complain that it's too hard. Hot tip: if you buy the Virtuous Cycle DLC you'll be very glad you've learned to parry, as it's the primary way to heal (there are no actual healing items in the roguelike mode).
Kept wondering why parry key does nothing, apparently you need an item for, nah can't use a weapon for it, obviously, right? Ugh. So much time wasted on this. :( So do I need a special set of boots for the kick too?
Is everyone else playing a different version of the game? I'm on PS4 and parrying is super glitchy and inconsistent even after memorizing the timing of specific move animations and only attempting to parry those. Sometimes when characters swing a weapon at you it will do damage 2 to 3 ft before it makes contact with you. These hitbox glitches just compound the difficulty of parrying, which was already made artificially difficult by purposely adding delays and staggers to both your movements and the enemies.
@@fuzzybearbarian, it's wireless. The input lag is supposedly 4 to 8 ms. The frame rate of the PS4 is about 1 frame per 33.3 ms. I think it's just a bad game mechanic. Whether a parry succeeds of fails seems to have nothing to do with the parry blocking/ connecting with the strike timing wise - as evidenced by the fact that you often come back to recover a shell frozen in the apex of it's parry. It's just glitchy. The visuals on the screen don't really seem to line up with the source code computing whether a parry succeeds in terms of hitboxes connecting
@@purdysanchez Ah, yes, framerate is a big deal. I play on PC so no issue there. But I know first hand after playing Sekiro on PC and then on PS4 the difference it makes. I once speedran Sekiro with 100% perfect parries from start to finish. Then I jumped on a PS4 and couldn't parry if my life depended on it. It took a lot of practice, and even then my fully focused and trying hard as hell parries were probably 80% of what I could do on the PC with ease, maybe even less. So I feel for ya. I reckon Mortal Shell will feel a lot better on the PS5!
I found it pointless to parry against Enslaved Grisha most of the time his first attack would go over my head not connecting and leave me standing in the open holding the seal to get hit by the follow up
No cooldown, but you need resolve to do the follow up empowered riposte. There's also a slight pause between using it once and using it immediately again.
So I basically have to time my party animation to intercept right before their attack wind up animation would hit me? (Rhetorical question. I’m thinking out loud as I’m playing right now. Love the vid I will definitely pay more attention later and watch thoroughly. I’m being stubborn and trying to nail it down asap. 😂😭)
More like at the tip of their wind up animation. It's a bit hard to explain in text because it does vary depending on the enemy type and their attack type. But in short you basically time your parry with the crossover point between when they wind up and when they begin their swing. Ultimately it's a fine line, so I really recommend taking a moment to practice for a bit on different enemies to learn the exact timing and put it into muscle memory, without worrying if you die or not. Pick enemies close to your respawn point to practice on. Getting parrying down really helps a lot if you want to do the Reverie.
@@fuzzybearbarian that’s a perfect explanation!
Just get as far as you want, and enjoy!
Playing this game as an introduction to souls-likes and really struggling with it, but this video helped me out immensely. Big thanks.
No probs. This playlist might help out too if you're interested: ua-cam.com/play/PLsxfoGQwyeP7cn7F5aZXJ037aLb8ma8Wg.html
Really good video! This was exactly the video I was looking for when I tried the open beta (this video came out the day after I needed it...)
That's old Murphy just doing his job. Never sleeps that guy.
here comes another beautiful lesson, thank you profusely
Lol cheers!
I just started playing MS yesterday and I’m really digging the melee mechanics but I needed this
I also made a "fast playthrough" guide which you might find handy: ua-cam.com/play/PLsxfoGQwyeP4ubXBQ2MPfviZDJHTEd3xC.html
Good clip nice advice
Thanks!
Thanks so much for this video!
This video is a Godsend! Thank you!!
First of all, great video, it helped me tons.
I don't mind the "hard to master" aspect of it at all, but what bothers me is that there is no varriety. Once you learn how to parry there is no reason to not do it at every single enemy you can. It's just so effective and the game expierence becomes different. For example: the mini boss in the starting area to the right, with parrying he'll die in 5 strikes, but it'll take you a couple of minutes without (if you don't cheese him against a wall)
Obviously ppl like to compare to Sekiro, but blocking has a reason to be there, the whole fighting revolves around it, with the gauges & also with the idea of creating awesome immersive fights. Here it is supposed to be a rewarding option not a skill ceiling that opens up the game. (I don't mean opening up as in making it accessible, I got to the boss without a single parry)
That's how I feel about this, would be really interested in hearing your more sophisticated opinion @Fuzzy Bearbarian
Simply beautiful
Brilliant video mate
Man I just give up it's way too hard to get the timing down
I also have a full walkthrough on how to beat the game in four hours without parrying at all which you might find helpful: ua-cam.com/video/0p9TVp6xFuY/v-deo.html and I have a guide on how to get overpowered early if you're playing the Reverie specifically: ua-cam.com/video/1DS9_IwHl1E/v-deo.html Good luck!
Thanks for this, helped a load
Wow, get this I thought when the seal Glows it indicates that you can parry, super thanks,
But as you said it is difficult to master it
Arg, that must have been causing you to get smashed! I'll bet that was frustrating!
@@fuzzybearbarian man, i couldn't win against Grisha
Can you make a video with parring all parrable attacks with stop when to press? Would be amazing. Not available on UA-cam.
Thank u for such a great explanation bro. This really helped tremendously. I was struggling with the parry but have it down perfect now. Ty so much
The Perry system is by far different from the dark souls games from what I remember. It was more of a times thrust than a pre timed attach. Thanks for the help.
Thank you, first game today and was struggling. This will help -your awesome
No probs. If you need more help, I made a walkthrough for how to beat the game in 4 hours. Playlist is here: ua-cam.com/play/PLsxfoGQwyeP7cn7F5aZXJ037aLb8ma8Wg.html
Awesome! The best guides on youtube!
Cheers mate!
Thanks, I just started to play this game and I couldn't figure out how to parry. I think I was pressing LB too early.
Glad to help. I have a walkthrough for beating the main game in 4 hours which you might like too: ua-cam.com/video/0p9TVp6xFuY/v-deo.html
Plot Twist: he only showed the 1/1000 chance parts where he got the parry off
This parry system is harder than sekiro
I made a full walkthrough (for beating the whole game in under 4 hours). Here's the playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLsxfoGQwyeP4ubXBQ2MPfviZDJHTEd3xC.html
I kept trying to parry the wrong attack. I thought it flashed when you could parry
Most instructive 👍
I must try more.
Yeah man, it takes a bit of practice to get it down.
still cant time LOL😭
Thank you
You're welcome.
I'm pretty determined to practice the parry system and get good at it, thanks for this video, its really helpful. I wonder if this game is going to make me better at the Fromsoft games parry systems too.
This video was great after I watched it I beat the first boss in three tries only parying
Awesome!
Thank you for this. Really helped!
Glad it helped!
I wish the game would hint that u need to parry like this i have spend so much time trying to pry the spear enemy i never succeeded. When i try to pry i die 😅
I don't understand. Can I parry right away? It almost seems like it's not even a thing because nothing is happening.
for some twisted reason, i can't parry anymore, not even bosses
I miss alot of perry's atm
Ive notice the parry window for the enemies its bigger than bloodborne
Great video.
Thanks!
Thanks man I needed this lol
I thought hardening was the only way to stop damage aside from dodging
Whenever I try party my brain goes: PANIK, I forgot how to parry. And I get hit
When I picked up the tarnished seal, I lost my ability to harden. Wtf?
You shouldnt have lost the Harden, it's a different button than Parry
@@GuillotineWoW It glitched out and I did lose it when I first got the seal. I just quit out the game and it fixed itself. Works now
Yep. I had this bug happen to me several times. It is extremely annoying.
The glitch was triggered when i would do the parry without the riposte.
The bug would revert to normal after the next riposted parry....
But that's nothing, compared to the bug of being hit by enemies who are already dead!
Thank you!
This game is so damn difficult! The parry timing is insane smh
First soulslike?
@@WhiteInk47 I played and loved Hollow Knight. Terrible at that game too lol
Yep. The next parry-centric game is out in a few days, Thymesia, and that one's going to be even harder based on the demo at least...
After one hour I'm not even getting close to parrying first werewolf boss. Though helpful video, didn't know you need resolve to parry. Holy shiite the weird rules in this game.
dude, I never even knew you could parry. I didn't read the fucking prompt and I still felt like the game was too easy.
Lol, most people complain that it's too hard. Hot tip: if you buy the Virtuous Cycle DLC you'll be very glad you've learned to parry, as it's the primary way to heal (there are no actual healing items in the roguelike mode).
Omg this is about as close to sekiro as you can get I’m starting this game immediately
You might want to take a look at Thymesia. I made a short here: ua-cam.com/users/shortsSAdlvp8YINw?feature=share
Kept wondering why parry key does nothing, apparently you need an item for, nah can't use a weapon for it, obviously, right? Ugh. So much time wasted on this. :( So do I need a special set of boots for the kick too?
How do you riposte bro why do they not tell you this in the game
Ty sir!
Can anyone help me I keep getting hit once and dying in the first part and I don't know how to avoid that
You can try following my 'Walkthrough in 4 hours' playlist: ua-cam.com/play/PLsxfoGQwyeP7cn7F5aZXJ037aLb8ma8Wg.html
cool, thanks
Is everyone else playing a different version of the game? I'm on PS4 and parrying is super glitchy and inconsistent even after memorizing the timing of specific move animations and only attempting to parry those. Sometimes when characters swing a weapon at you it will do damage 2 to 3 ft before it makes contact with you. These hitbox glitches just compound the difficulty of parrying, which was already made artificially difficult by purposely adding delays and staggers to both your movements and the enemies.
Are you using a wireless controller? I find I can't parry for shit in Mortal Shell unless it's wired.
I don't think this guy knows what a millisecond or a fraction are.
I found it pointless to parry against Enslaved Grisha most of the time his first attack would go over my head not connecting and leave me standing in the open holding the seal to get hit by the follow up
Is there a cooldown on parrying or something? I'm fighting a boss and there doesn't seem to be a tell on when I'm allowed to parry again or not.
No cooldown, but you need resolve to do the follow up empowered riposte. There's also a slight pause between using it once and using it immediately again.
@@fuzzybearbarian so there is a cool down then if there is a pause between being able to use it again.
@@demonintellect9834 if you get the parry it should be a non factor since they get stunned
@@bestgirlyagoo800 That's the problem though is that it seems there is a cooldown after a successful parry.
@@demonintellect9834 No, there is no cooldown. Like any move, you can do a move, then your character resets, then you do the move again.
I think the brigands give me trouble on their timing because I just defeated Grisha a few moments ago on my first try! and I was able to parry most of its attacks! Your explanation in the video really did help and I think I’m picking up on it quick! 😃 I’ll definitely have to practice my crossover point on more enemy types. So far I’m loving the game :) thank you so much for all your help!!!
