I own the RX100 V which has a 24-70mm lens, I wanted to try the new RX100 VII because of the 200mm lens. When shooting crew from another boat I need a gimbal most of the time, I am not sure there is a way to shoot a full frame camera at 200mm on a gimbal. If there is let me know. I like the 200mm so I can isolate individual rowers. If the crew practice is a couple hours I have no problem holding the Crane M and the Sony RX100 VII for the entire time, but I don't have to, because the battery will run out before that at a little over an hour so I get a break changing batteries.I love using the zoom function from the handle of the gimbal and also hitting start and stop. It is really nice not having to touch the camera. To do this you just need a cable from the camera to the gimbal.Shooting at 4k is really nice on this camera, however when you do the screen with dim from full brightness to normal brightness so it can be challenging to see the screen. The RX100 V that I own has a built in ND filter which is very handy because you can't get above f11 on this camera, but they had to take the ND filter out on the VII to make room for the larger lens. If you try to shoot 4k 24fps or 30 fps the outdoor shots are normally to bright, so the only thing I can do it raise the shutter speed from 50 to 100-200. It is a little bit noticeable with a sport like rowing. If it had 4k 60 I might need an ND filter because I would have the shutter up at 125th, perhaps it will have that in the next model. I would be up around 1/125th shutter that would put me in that 100-200 range I have been shooting with.I know you can buy ND filters for this which is something I have not tried yet. They look like they are a pain to put on.Sure I give up DOF using this camera, but I can get those shots with my full frame when the water is super smooth.I don't think I will by this version I think I'll wait for the next version which should have 4k 60 so I can keep the 180 degree rule

I haven't made a video in a while, but I will. I'm doing just fine. I am looking at changing directions with this channel when my next video comes out.
Glad to hear that Dave. Good luck!
That’s great news, I’ve been subscribed to your channel since your t2i videos. I’ve really enjoyed your channel through the years. I can’t wait to see where your channel is going!
That's great news! I've learned a lot from you since your d5100 tutorials. Can't wait to watch your new videos.
I came here just to see this. Thank you for the update. Big fan of your Channel and was wondering where you videos had gone.
We miss you! I remember in 2014 i would be watching your videos in highschool. You have taught me alot!
ahh man i miss this channel
I just want to echo everyone else by saying we want more Dave!!!!!! Been following you for like a decade and appreciate your perspective. One vid a week is all I want ;)
We miss you sir, please make video regularly
Helo!
Me too I learned all from him
I love you’re in-depth reviews about cameras and lenses. They’re great, I learned a lot from. I’m actually about to start to play with the Sony mirrorless cameras. You have been a great source of knowledge and inspiration to me. Keep up the great work Dave
A Dave Dugdale video! Yay! 👍
Anees Mehdi I said that just 3 days ago. 😁
Love you Dave! Thanks for all your amazing videos over the years. You've made a huge impact.
Dave! Make another video even if its just an update on your life. Miss you brother!
Hey Dave, I think I can speak for everyone here that we all hope you are doing a okay and still being as healthy as ever in these troubled times! I watched you since my t2i days which was waaaay back in 2009ish and still consider you to be the Father of UA-cam Filmmaking!! Truly, just a big Thank You for helping me be a better filmmaker when that type of information was once upon a time scarce! You don't have to rush with anything in terms of videos, there's still a big chunk of us hoping for your return one day BUT more important, stay healthy friend and keep on filming! 🙏
Thanks for the kind words. I am doing well.
I would like to return to making videos but I am having a hard time trying to figure out what I would like to say. While I still love shooting video I am not sure I have much to say on that topic anymore. My new Sony a7M4 is a joy to use but I am not sure I can add much to the conversation with all the great people reviewing cameras now.
I guess I just need to start on a new topic and see what happens.
@@DaveDugdaleColorado (long time listener here) Like with most teachers, there are a lot of choices and all take slightly different approaches. When they can, students young and old flock to the teachers they understand the most. That's a long way of saying keep making videos--if you still have the desire and resources--because you have a lot to add to the conversations!
@@DaveDugdaleColorado Who cares what others are going to say about a specific piece of gear. You are a smart guy and we love your style for presenting the information. I've been involved with the video industry since 1989 (about 34 years), have worked for tv stations, even at the network level, but I enjoy watching tech youtube channels of all sizes, and I've realized that I can learn something new. You better come up with a better excuse, we want you back.😜
ping us to show you ok
Looking forward to seeing what you have planned next. Long time fan here Dave.
Glad to hear you're doing well still, Dave. We miss ya!
Nice hearing from you again Dave!
Dave, we all want you back.
Hey Doug, Always love your videos and followed you for years, and want to tell you that you have been very instrumental in my own personal development, LOL I recall your video comparing the Canon 5D weight size to the Panasonic GHx Like you i went to Panasonic, than to Sony and Sony A9 than switched back to the Canon, I now have a pet Donkey or my C200, C100, 1DX, EOS-R what . ton of weight, again Thankyou for all you have done for me. DeWayne UK
Yes please! I can't wait to see more of your videos. You're just too thorough to stop making videos. Besides, your voice is soooo soothing. ;)
It's been quite some time, I hope you are doing well. Been following you since the T2i days lol. Merry xmas.
Yeah Dave ! We are all missing you !! Hope you're fine ! Cheers
Sigh. ..... we miss your videos Dave.... such fond memories of a "Dave Dugdale has uploaded a new video" notification popping up..... sigh!
Hi Dave, I hope you're doing well! I hope to see more stuff from you again in the near future!
I have a carryspeed magfilter with polariser and ND filter that just clips on. Strong magnet, it won't come off unless you pry it off or knock it off hard. Got it for version 1 and didn't use it after I got version 5. Just checked little bag I carry camera in and it's still in there :)
Dave, how have you been? Any thoughts on the R5/R6 vs a7sIII? You where one of the original to speak against the Canon cripple hammer. Your input would be appreciated
I was hoping for more Dave. I guess we are learning. (:
What about the Lumix 35-100 f/2.8? I know it's not full frame, but it's the equivalent focal length and zoomed into 100mm, I'm sure you'd still get some good shallow D.o.F.
Yes! A new video! Secret Dave Dugdale fanboy. Well, I guess it's not a secret anymore. :)
Thanks Kevin, good to see you are using your name so I don't have to write "Mr. Basic". :)
Dave Dugdale 👍👍👍
Easily overlooked is the ex.tele function of the Panas that increases the crop factor by 1.4x in 4K. Turns the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 into a 157mm f/1.4 equiv optic, as well as the Oly 75mm f/1.8 into a 210mm f/1.8. Also the G9 is now a viable & cheaper GH5 alternative (post firmware) as long as the 15 min 4K 60p recording limit isn't too constrictive.
hope see you in new video cant wait :)
I ordered the SteadXP+ which is supposed to stabilize footage from any camera. It's an add-on gyroscope & accelerometer that records camera movement data to then merge that data into post to stabilize it in 3D space. When people get it to work it looks great.
I forgot about that, I should give that a try.
Miss you Dave!!!
Hi, have you had any issues with overheating when shooting in 4k? The earlier models had a problem with overheating, but according to some sources the Vii version has largely got the thermal issues under control. Thanks!
I just bought the Vii for the fact you can virtually record 4k till the battery dies or the SD Card fills up! Would not have purchased it with 5 min limit! I did a quick 30 min 4k test in the Office and the Camera just got a little warm! Would rather the 1.8 to 2.8 Lens as I purchased this mainly for Scuba diving. O, you also need to turn the 5 min limit off in the Menu :-)
@@bbz149 Thank you for the info Terry, it's much appreciated!
Dave miss hearing from you, I stared following and learning from you b/4 you came to UA-cam on your Vimeo channel.
Not a video person (yes, still subscribed, can always learn something from Dave!) , so apologies if I am missing something, but:
Sony A6x00 plus 18-135 could be compact/light enough for gimbal. But not splashproof.
A7x with 24-240 probably too heavy.
Pentax KS2 with Pentax DA 18-135 is splash proof, compact but hey, even I would not recommend Pentax to video ppl.
Fuji also has an splash proof 18-135, but I don't understand their cameras well enough to recommend somethign specific
Sorry, you've probably thought of all these combos (except the Pentax :D )
Hope you are doing well, and been waiting for some new videos
Dave, Where are you? We miss you man!
Seems like a nice day for a shoot.
Great shots Dave! The rowers caught my eye - I'm actually a certified Canadian rowing coach, and raced for several years. I'm no longer involved in the sport, though I'm filming our canoe paddling trips (different kind of paddling) with a Panasonic G9, 12-60mm, on a PilotFly Adventurer gimbal, and I'm getting rock-steady results all the way out to 120mm equivalents... so I'm pretty sure that combo will go much further provided the lens you're using works in conjunction with the dual IS. The G9's 4K 8-bit recording is virtually identical to the GH5, though you get an additional stop of stabilization in the G9. I've been using the combo to film everything from downhill skiing at high speed to paddling... in an effort to get drone-like shots at longer focal lengths on the ground. I can walk at 120mm equivalents with smooth results too. Hope this helps!
The G9 auto focus is also a little better than the gh5 because of the newer processor. I love the image from that camera.
Chris Prouse 8bit on G9 is nowhere near 10bit on GH5 but you will now get a 10bit update for G9. Lucky!
Max Kitaev - Of course... they’re entirely different recording modes... that’s why I said the 8-bit is virtually identical. The update’s nice to have and I’m looking forward to having HLG on the G9, but 10-bit is impractical for most web delivery jobs.
10 bit for 30p 4k, not for 60p internal.
You could use a M43 camera with a 100 mm. With a crop factor of 2, you should get 200 mm equivalent. You could also use an extender but that will give you more length defeating the purpouse.
What happened to Dave?
Dave, iw been following you since your early videos. I hope you are doing greate :D Waiting you to get back on here. But anyway life is about fammily and joy so its fine if you are not going do videos here. We will survive :D
I'm thinking Olympus EM1-mark 2, with a 12-100 F4 lens and the latest firmware 3.1, which give it phase detect AF in Video. And I don't think I need to say that this combination has a very smooth image stabilisation.Question, can you rest the camera with a monopod on the the boat?
I guess so, but I seem to be moving around so much in the boat that the monopod might be more hassle than it's worth.
I rewatched your video, and here's a few more ideas.
It seems that you're seeking to shoot in the most challenging ways, HDR, shallow DOF, 4k, from a small moving platform at a moving target aiming to shoot at a long focal length.
1: Consider your position in the boat, in front there is most movement, in the rear usually the least. - I would put a swivel chair (without wheels!) over the cables and hoses just in front of the outboard engine. I rest my legs around on the slightly raised deck. I put my elbows on my knees, viewfinder to my eye and lens in my left hand. If I want to do a tracking shot I would use a monopod, and rest that on my chair between my legs. My legs would rotate the chair and me, and I would steady the camera. As for a camera and lens choice it's tricky. But I think I would select the GH5 and shoot in 6k HLG using the Leica 100-400. In rough weather clouds reduce the dynamic range to be within GH5 range. The 6k will allow me to crop and stabilise the video severely. The long(er) lens will give me that delicious shallow DOF, and dual IS, monopod and swivel chair will give me enough stabilisation to create that near static shot. Not to mention the 4k-60 + long lens will give me those cool slow-motion detail shots.
But allow me to ask why you want a perfectly still shot of people performing an intensely physically sport? If it is for technique analysis I understand, but if you just want to create a portrait of the team and it's individuals I think I want to see hand held, fast cuts etc.
One other option is to use a drone, but then I don't think you can get close enough to each face without being very distracting.
It may not be expensive or super fancy looking, but bringing a good swivel chair may be your ticket to shooting steady and convenient long shots!
ps. If you bring a long monopod, and a wide lens you can also take a few up down shots.
Great to see a Dave Dugdale video... nice shots too!
Sounds like you need two cameras to cover all you want... I presume swapping lenses and re-balancing a gimbal on the launch isn't a great idea? I know it's not full frame, but what about a GH5 and something like the Lumix 35-100mm f2.8 II O.I.S. Lens? That's equivalent to 70-200 on full frame (FOV) but butter smooth with gimbal, IBIS and O.I.S combined !!! You'd also get the 4K at 60fps... they are really coming down in price at the moment... just because of all the GH6 rumours! Thinking about all the other full frame options... things get very large and heavy quite quickly!
Take care.
That combo sounds like a good idea, in the spring season I will get that combo in for review and give it a try on that launch. Thanks!
I came here expecting to find something about Canon EOS R5 (which I bought one week ago, FINALLY!), because I came here 6 years ago, looking for something about the GH4 and I found your course (remember it? 😀) that I bought few days later. For my surprise the last video posted was in 2019! I sincerely hope everything is alright Dave.
Hope everything is fine with you, Mr. Dugdale. Miss your videos.
Dave - I first need to understand you are OK...love your videos and would be great to know understand what you are up to.
I am all good.
this men left a 200K UA-cam channel 😂
Nice review but what about using a camcorder instead will be a great test to compare both results. Thanks!
I miss your videos
Hi Dave hope you are well and ok. Haven't seen you for a while on here. The Sony RX100 is Awesome lol. Great video. Thanks for sharing
I am doing just fine.
@@DaveDugdaleColorado Nice to hear
Hey Dave! Come back. We need you.
Not full frame, but the GH5 and the 35-100 lens would be smooth and splashproof.
Hey Dave, waiting.
Give me the Gimbal Link please
I hope he's not sick or worse. Someone needs to post on here and tell us because his content was fantastic, either way I wish his family would let us know gso we don't have to keep checking back.
I'm doing just fine, I will do more videos but I have been working on different projects that are not camera related.
Where is dave? It's been 3 years since his last video! I hope he is OK
How do you zoom on the crane m without throwing off the balance?
The camera is so small and the gimbal motors are pretty powerful that it does not seem to bother the gimbal.
BRO NEW VIDEO ???????
I hope to at some point.
Come back Dave!
Another year gone by. Hope everything is still okay, Dave.
All good, thanks for asking.
Dave it's time to post again
Momentum productions has a good video about the FE 70-200mm/2.8 with a Zhiyun crane 2 gimbal if you want to check it out! Cheers!
Hey thanks, I will check it out.
The only problem i see with Sony RX100 VII and other smaller sensor cameras is the horrible aliasing, that looks incredibly cheap ... so internal sharpening has to be turned down way low and sometimes even masks with gaussian blur in post are neccessary ... but other than that this is a incredble camera imo
Where did you go Dave?
I'm still here, I am doing fine. But I am thinking of changing directions with my channel.
Does anyone here know what happened to Dave or what he's been up to? I miss him. I use to watch him all the time when I first got into photography. Hope he's well.
Hope you're okay Dave, I've been watching you since T2i videos.
Same here! I hope he is fine

Where is Dave?
I own IV and with that small sensor and minimum f3.5 (2.8 in fact but just on the very wide lenth) there no such thing as shallow depth. It just doesn’t exist
The RX100 IV goes to 1.8 on the wide end. 2.8 is at 70mm (equivalent focal length). If the subject is close and background is far you can get reasonably shallow DoF for portraits.
rsmith02 oops. My bad. 2.8 indeed. In real life situations i still never had shallow depth.
Who cares about internal ND? Just add circular nd. Although I heard the front of the lens on VII is tricky to mount it on
dave! no vids for 2 years ...what ahpppened??
Dude, r u ok? Where r u?
