last season I grew cantaloupe in a small pool. it was GREAT!
Wow. Thank you for that tip. I've been trying to figure out what to put my cantaloupe in. That is perfect!
Great idea💡
How big did they get? Thats a fabulous idea!
Do you mean one of those kiddie pools?
I went to an Asian market and they had a cantaloupe crossed with a honeydew melon. It was the most delicious fruit I’ve ever had in my life so I dried the seeds and I got 7 sprouts out of the 30 seeds. Super excited for harvest season!!!!
Was it a snow leopard, Picasso or Gaza melon?
I saved some Howell melon cantaloupe from about 4 years ago. Planted this year in a large box my husband made. He built me a handicapped friendly garden. Got sprouts today !
These are really good to eat for hydration,i'm eating 1 a day and running 5 k and 5 k walk ,never been in better shape in my life at 39 ,lol, eat well live well..
Ill do this too in the future! I started planting cantaloupes and it feels so good to see your plants grow
Rhodelia do it tomorrow
Hey Luke! I have been growing Minnesota Midget cantaloupe in 18 gallon tubs and it has been working out well. I will be harvesting my first fruit from them in a couple days. I would highly recommend that variety for pots. They have a short grow season for those of us who live in the north country which is a must in my area. You and Sindy have a great day!

Many thanks for this video. We planted some cantaloupe seeds just to see if they'd grow. We now have about 70 plants. I guess I'll start filling containers. lol You also answered a question as to why I've never had luck growing pumpkins. I tended to plant pumpkin at the edge of the garden so I could train them onto the lawn and keep them manageable. This also meant they had the vines disturbed regularly while mowing, weeding, etc. Now I know to not move the vines. I had no idea those little roots along the vine were important. Seams obvious in hindsight. My son and his girlfriend are vegan now so I'll try my best to keep them supplied with fresh healthy, homegrown, pesticide free veggies and fruit. Your videos make the enjoyable task of growing your own food easier and even more enjoyable. A very big thank you. Keep up the good work. We appreciate it.
I'm glad to hear you've had success growing cantaloupes in pots. This gives me hope that I may be able to grow some next year on the front steps. Thanks!
Hey, Luke I think u did a great job explaining this process!
This is a great info! Now I am going to try it this week end. Thank you so much!
Thanks Luke!!! Great video!! I had eaten a cantaloupe a month ago and decided to save the seeds!! Glad I did! I planted them in egg shells in the egg container [recycle baby!! LOL] June 1st, 2016...they have come up already!! We just did our first veggie garden this year and had planted a couple rows of corn, tomatoes, onions [had onions that sprouted in the bag and said: Hey, why not!?!] and the same with our potatoes [no seed taters here!! Saved us some $ !!] and have other veggies..swiss chard, green & yellow beans, collard greens, parsley [LOVE!!] Broccoli, asparagus, of course, we didnt think THAT far ahead of HOW MUCH space the big leafies will grow! So, great to see your video!! I have really big plastic planters and will def try this!! Will have to give some of my plantings to our neighbor as we have about 20 plants! LOL Again, thanks and happy gardening!!! Pam Zirbel, Upstate Western NY !!!
I live in a condo where we can only grow things in pots, so I really appreciate learning that it is possible to grow cantaloupes and cucumbers. Thank you so much!
I have 2 cantaloupe plants in 5 gallon containers and was fretting about them. I googled and your video popped up. Thanks for the tip about fertilizing!
How did they turn out?
I have successfully grown large pumpkins in large pots for years
Great Video...
Question: How many SEEDS did you plant in this pot?
Thank you for sharing this great video... I needed this video now... Love it.
Funny, Luke, I just planted some cantaloupe seeds in a pot last week. I ran out of room in my garden and wanted to plant some more for a fall crop. Again, very timely info!
I am always happy to know that my information is timely! haha I loved your grow bag episode, you could totally grow one in a grow bag. That would make a very interesting episode!
***** Luke , we need to put you on production staff around here!
THE VERY BEST Cantaloupe Seeds are from the Pecos Valley in Texas...
I received 2 of those cantaloupe today... Will save the seeds... YEAH...
Happy Happy Happy...
Wow thanks for the gourd rooting info! Never realized certain gourds have external rooting sites and other gourds don't.
yeah thx for sharing this tip.
Had a delicious cantaloupe. Set the seeds aside in my coffee grounds that I save for my garden. About 4 or 5 days later I threw them in this big clay pot I have thats just there with old dirt that gets watered because its next to my garden lol so the dirt is good. Anyways, literally I wiped away the top like half an inch, carelessly threw the cantaloupe seeds in, covered them up with a little dirt, then watered, seeds went floating, oh well ok whatevs... Yesterday I went to clean out my garden of weeds (about a week later if that) and I had set my strawberry plant on top of the seeds I threw in, like I said I honestly was being careless... I laughed! When I picked up the strawberry plant I saw tons of long seedlings like 5 inches long. So apparently Im now growing cantaloupes! Cool! 🍈😄
Thank you! I'm growing seeds right now. I will give away a few plants and keep one for a container.
A large growing bag could be the solution. I heard that you can sew them from landscaping material (or ask the producer of such materials what they recommend). There is even a chance to move it (for instance from frost, or they can be covered during the night), one could start out with a cellulose pot and prepare seedlings indoors, I heard they are VERY sensitive to frost, but on the other hand they are also need a long growing season. So one could take advantage of a nice spring but when it gets cold the smaller "pots" are taken indoors and as soon as the frosts are over (late April in many regions in the temperate climate zone, the pot goes into the larger growing bag which is nearby a house or wall (so it will be warmer). it needs a lot of sun to develop the sugar.
Hey .. everyone Moniee-Mon, is listening thanks for the info vedios keep doing what'cha do best God bless ya!.
Thank you so much for this video. I am trying cantaloupe in a pot for the first time this year (2020) on my back deck, where I am trellising it along the deck railings. Your video includes several very helpful points and tips! The vines are very long, so I am wondering if I should trim them back to make them more compact the next time around. Meanwhile I will be thrilled to get one or two home-grown babies for a first try.
Great video. Short and sweet, but with alot of info.
Wish me luck ! Lol
Awesome! Can’t wait to try. Thank you so much!
I can't grow anything in any area of my garden because of the toxins in it so growing fruits and vegetable is the best way for me. Thanks for sharing the video it really gives me an idea how to grow cantaloupe in a pot and other vegetables. Btw, what is the recommended size of the container?
Awesome video and grow tips! Planting cantaloupe in one of my huegel culture container gardens tomorrow!
Luke, what size pot will accommodate a cantaloupe plant? Enjoy all your videos very helpful. I have learned a lot...greetings from Phx Az..🌵🌞
Interesting. I would have never thought you could do that ! Good to know. Thanks Luke
Great video!
I didn't know people thought that you couldn't grow cantaloupe in containers, I just planted mine in one because the raised bed isn't ready in the greenhouse yet. I don't seem to be that great at pollinating it though, it hasn't set any fruit yet.
Your stuff is cool buddy I wanna start my cantaloupe planning. I'm drying my seeds but if I'm growing in pots and I can only get two to 3 fruits I'll have to gather like 10 pots
I have 3 plants in pots right now and can't wait to see how it goes :) this is my first year with them
I am growing jumbo cantaloupe in a 10 gallon bag. So far they look to be doing well.
Ordering my seed I am picking up Cershownski cantaloupe and bark watermelon. Going to be an interesting year Sir All the best! I am growing them in pots, so I can start a bit early. Up here in Canada we has a shorter growing season. Best wishes in the garden this year. Rob
Hey, thanks a bunch. I'm in AZ where we have a HUGE Salt Cedar problem and my yard is barren because of it. I have the space but can NOT put any plants in the soil. My family eats a lot of cantaloupe so this is very helpful. I'll experiment now. Thanks again.
Raised beds?
This was very helpful, thanks!
Cool vid ur the best thanks for all your info no need for cable UA-cam's where its at !
I'm going to try this in a raised bed and attempt to grow it vertical. This is one of 5 things I'm going vertical with this year.
MIGardner, Thanks for the encouragement to grow cantaloupe in a container. What variety(yes) do you find do well in the containers and what size container do you use?
perfect length for a video
Hi Luke. I realize this is an older video but I just found it. Question... would a larger pot help with final melon size? If not, why not? Thanks for the videos! I’ve learned a lot from you.
Thanks again!
I use a 3 gallon pot
I have a sugar baby watermelon growing in a 7 gallon grow bag! It was doing very well until we had some horrible weather...hoping to try again in the spring if this one fails, I think its too late to replant another melon! :(..Great Video!
The pot you’re using seems small. 5 gallon may be enough space for their roots. Going to try that or tubs. Glad to see your doing this. I can’t do in ground gardening any longer.
a couple of volunteer vines showed up in my new section so I'm going to run back there to compare the leaves with your cantaloupe! I'm really hoping that it is some sort of yummy melon. Happy to know cantaloupe can live in small space! :D
Thanks & very timely. I have one growing in a large pot now. I'm glad you discussed feeding frequency because I wasn't doing this as often. Very helpful
Wow Awesome! So question? What if I put it in a bigger pot? Maybe a 20 gallon would I be able to allow more fruit to stay on the cantaloupe?
Just purchased some of your Minnesota midget cantaloupe today for growing on a roof top garden!
I have 2 of them in a huge pot. They’ve been growing for 2 months & are covered with yellow blooms. I see bees around them. The vines have gone down the sides to the ground crawling everywhere. I removed some yellow leaves this week. I put Miracle Grow plant food on it a couple of times. How long does it take before fruit appears?
My mother threw canteloupe seeds into pots where I was growing potatoes, and I was thrilled when 3 fruits started to grow. There were 4, but I died. Now I'm worried about them maturing as it's getting colder.
What size pot would be the smallest and what's the best size for a cantaloupe?
Awesome thank you for sharing have a blessed day
what size is a good zie for the container I got 11 quarts which is about 3 gallons for the container I heard ten gallon is necessary
I did mine in recycling bins free and they r growing amazing check out my vid built a trellis to connect 3 binns 2 plants in each bin good luck :)
Thank you for sharing this. Not sure why you got some thumbs down ratings, but this is very good information.
Who knows why, but I am glad you liked it!
+MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living +MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living - I just found this very informative video on container growing, and have a question. Do you have, or could you PLEASE make a detailed video, showing the correct way to prune a cantaloupe plant?!? I have searched SO many videos here on UA-cam for a detailed step by step video on pruning cantaloupe plants, and am just super disappointed by not really finding any valuable, helpful videos! 😢 I am actually growing my 4 cantaloupe plants in 2 straw bales (2 plants ber bale...1st year straw bale gardening too!!) with a tall home made trellis behind them, and they're doing awesome as far as all the greenery and sprawling vines, but I only have 3 nice sized fruits (and yes...TONS OF pollinators!! 🐝). I believe I could possibly help my guys get going even better IF I knew the proper way to prune them. I've read good articles about how to prune them, but I'm the visual type where I really need to SEE what to do, more than just READ about it, in order to do it correctly so that I DON'T screw something up! I've asked for this help from others elsewhere as well, but NO ONE seems willing/able to reply back!
Thanks in advance for ANY help you can give me!! Two years ago I found your video on how to keep birds out of strawberry patches by painting rocks as strawberries, so my 2 younger daughters and I did just that, and we had SO MANY more strawberries saved last year by doing so! And we had a BLAST together painting them! 🍓🐦 I really love all your helpful videos, so again...thanks!!
Angie Carter Barlow You want to prune off all flowers and young fruit once you have 3 fruits on the vine. Leave leaves as those create energy for your plant. I really hope this helps!
+MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living Okay, thank you. When already having a lot more than 3 fruits on the vines, can I leave the 3 biggest looking fruits, no matter where they're located on the vine, or should I leave the first 3 fruits closest to the main stem, and pull off all after that?
Angie Carter Barlow the biggest 3 :)
Thank you so much 😊
What size container?
Can I grow them during the fall ? And how many months does it take from seed to harvest? Thanks...
Good video and encouragement! I have used the detailed tips in the book "All My Secrets of Organic and Container Gardening So Far" with lots of good backyard results in a very small area. It has info on the food grade buckets to use and how to put in drain holes, etc. I really like not having to bend over down to the ground so much. I grew beans, cucumbers, peppers, strawberries, and sweet potatoes in the buckets this past season. I will try cantaloupe this year, because yours looks very good. Thanks!
Do you have a cucumber in pots growing guide?
Question, this is my first year growing cantaloupe, I don't have any melons, I have alot of bee action but all my female blooms seem to always be closed, its July 6th I still don't have melons, I stayed them in a container and transplanted a mouth of 5 weeks ago, they are runs everywhere, around 5 to 6ong vines, is there something I need to do or is it to soon, I've thought of hand pollinating but the females are always closed up, any suggestion, thanks Michael
I'm growing cantaloupe this year too Luke!
You can't go wrong with container grown plants. Sure you don't get as many fruits, but you get so much more growable space in containers.
Rob Backyard Gardenerr how did it turn out
So young! Thanks ❤
I grow cantaloupe vertically, so a trellis with the pot may help contain the sprawl of the vine for space-challenged gardeners. However, I was surprised to learn about pumpkins vines gathering energy to produce the pumpkins by putting down roots along the nodes. I'm growing them for the very first time this year and was attempting to grow them vertically as well. I can see then that this might not be the most successful way of doing so. Thanks for another informative video.
I think you'll be OK with the pumpkin and would suggest looking up hydroponic pumpkins and looking at the images. Seems to me that they grow well vertically as long as you limit the fruit and support them well.
Thank you so much for this! I have five sprouts in a very small bed I built. Should I cut the ones in the center of the bed to make more room for the plants at each ends of the bed? Or will they grow regardless being clumped together?
Great info, thanks Luke.
Probably a dumb question, but once you thin it out to 2 or 3 and you pick those, will it produce more?
Great episode, Luke. I'm new to Michigan gardening (or gardening period, for that matter) and I'm trying to grow 2 cantaloupe vines in my aquaponics system. They started out really well, grew fast, seemed to flower pretty early, but then...nothing. They still have a few flowers but the growth seems to have stopped completely and some of the leaves are turning brown and dying. It even looks like it might be shrinking. One of them is in a normal ebb and flow bed and the other is in a floating raft type bed. Any idea what might be going on there? I've peeked at the root system in the raft bed and it is massive, so that seems to be okay...Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Let’s go! I am doing this.
My cantaloupe leaves are browning ! I am so sad :’( I also noticed white lines I read those are bugs so I made a homemade neeem oil spray which is working I think ! But do you think they are turning brown cuz the sun ? I am growing them in grow bags. I think it’s the sun ! It’s been 95 here in California (Southern California).
I have 3 fruit growing. They're small and I doubt they're mature yet. Can I move them inside if it gets too cold?
I ran out of room in my garden so i put all of my melons (and a few cherry tomato) in pots along side my raised beds. Thanks for the info because i didnt plan on removing all but two or three fruit per vine. It makes sense though. I would rather have three very nice melon per plant then eleven anemic ones.
Im going to try it in a 10 gallon grow bag
Can I grow them in a larger pot for more/bigger fruit?
Does it need a trelis?
@@guruprabaha no they can grow without hanging on stuff
@@guruprabaha if you don’t get a trelis I recommend burying the vines and they will turn in roots
Bush varieties work well in containers
Hey Luke, was wondering if you had any insight into thinning fruits. I am growing 3 kinds of cantaloupe on a 6 foot high trellis in high quality compost and I was thinking about thinning all fruits above 4 feet or so. It will be difficult to thin to a certain number per plant because I have them intensely planted together so i thought that was a good compromise. Or is it unnecessary when you're growing in the ground? I have heard it helps with ripening, fruit size and, as I live in NEPA we don't have a terribly long summer(although longer than yours I'm sure ;-) ) Any thoughts?
it is honestly un-necessary when growing in-ground because they will get way more water, and way more nutrient (provided you have given them that)
gotcha, good to know, thanks!
Move.😂😂. I'm not being mean. I used to live in NEPA, now live in SC, and haven't been back in about 6 yrs. Need to go to settle some things, a cemetery plot I own. Check on family cemetery, only family there that can, youngest probably 70. Don't quite know if that provides enough guilt. Lol.
Wish you well. As far as I was concerned there were about 90 days of summer. Here in SC, ABOUT 70 days of winter- I 'll take that flip.🖒🖒
Can you do this with honeydew melons or do they grow differently?
My honey dress are doing great in a container. Cantaloupe not so much
Hello, Thanks for the great video. Ww live near LA (close to beach with a little cooler climate). I have few cantaloupe plants growing from my compost. Planning to plant few in a whiskey barrel container (24” diameter & 16” tall. Around 31 gallons / 120 liters). I am planning to plant around 5 plants in this & part of them go vertically & the rest on the ground (concrete). Is that too many for this size container? As another option, I can plant 3 or 4 cantaloupes 1 Okra & 1 tomato in that same container. Will that work? Pls suggest. I need ur response urgently as my plants are in a 2.5 gal getting crowded & really needs to be transplanted immediately (planning to do it today). Thanks in Advance 🙏
Hey! I just got a cantaloupe plant and I am not sure when to plant it, or when to water it or anything
You do such a great job, but FYI I was able to container grow Cinderella pumpkins and trellis them up - the vines never needed to set down roots along the vines.
This is SOOO good to know! I have big plans for pumpkins this year! What size containers did you use?
My cantaloupe leaves are dying in the big container. What fertilizer you use? Can I put 20-20-20 water soluble fertilizer? How much & often do I use?
I'm giving them a try again this year. Last year I couldn't get them to grown, I think my soil was too heavy. They grew a little after I added a bit of sand, but not enough to produce any fruit. I'm going to try growing them in a large container this year but I'm having trouble with drainage. Even after I added loads of sand the water only drains for a few seconds, then it just seats there. Maybe I should just try on the ground. Do you have any ideas of what I could do to help drainage? Perlite is currently out of stock everywhere I tried. :/
Growing melons is going to give me an headache but I'm not ready to quit. :D
I have another question, do you have any problems with pests in your watermelons? I'm not sure what to expect if mine do end up growing.
Thank you for your videos. :)
Do you have a video on How To Grow Tomatoes in a Pot?
Would training it from a large pot onto a string like a tomato work well?
That's great! I'm definitely going to try it sometime :-)
Thank you I'm going to try this :)
I planted Cantaloupe in a pot and I got baseball size fruits
how much Liter pots do you use?
Hi Luke, First off --- We PLANT,
God GROWS!!
Have you ever planted any thing in 5 hallon buckets? I
have Irish potatoes, Early Girl
tomatoes, Hale's Best canta -
loupe (from a seed package),
Munchers cucumbers ( also
from a seed package), & 3 slips of sweet potatoes, which was given to me, but the kind is unknown. I have a Patio tomato too, but I put her in my mother's silver pot, but both of the tomatoes have Blossom End Rot, BUT --- I have gotten 2 small ones from the Patio. I have neen giving them (both)
watered - down milk (2% into
skim). Is there any way I could share my pictures to you to show you?
Hi I have like 10 baby plants in a pot they are all very close to each other do you think I should sacrifice some of them ?
I'm curious what size pot to use. Would an 18" diameter and 10" depth be sufficient?
I'm a 1st timer. I just planted a few days a go. I need to see the next steps after they begin to grow. I know I have to separate them and put them in another pot. But I'm lost after that. Do I put a net on them to grow or something? I'm lost
My leaves are turning so yellow/ brown :’( Idk what to do. The fruit is growing amazing. Idk if it’s too hot or bugs or what? I live in Southern California . I need help plse.
Wow you are in Michigan and just now starting to set fruit?? Will there be enough hot days for it to ripen? I just picked some of my last cantaloupes (they are in raised beds) and I am in Nebraska.
I was a bit late to the show... there should be enough days. Our first frost is usually october 20th. so we have plenty of time.
***** I wasn't sure if you could go by last frost with melon since I thought it needs about 2-3 months of continuous heat.
Why kind of fertilizer do we use!?
very well said thanks for the info...
How long does it take cantaloupe to germinate and sprout? Thanks 😁
I have that same greenhouse
What is the best soil composition for melon/cantaloupe given that I have the following: vermiculite, sand, burnt soil, compost, black soil, composted chicken manure, bonemeal and vermicast? A ratio would be appreciated. Thank you!!
I have several plants in a long flower box. Do I need to separate one plant per pot?
great video, Got a seedling growing now
Could I just use trifecta plus if I'm growing cantaloupe in a container?
so my cantaloupe plant is growing great and its in a pot BUT despite all the flowers i still have no melons forming. wondering why that might be?
Can you start off in pot let vein grow to go into ground soil???
