    The VW ID BUZZ stands for the new Volkswagen: modern, positive, emotional, future-orientated. By 2025, we want to sell one million VW ID electric cars per year, making e-mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen. The new e-Golf2 already offers 50 percent more electric range. From 2020 onwards we will then launch our VW ID family, a new generation of fully electric, fully connected cars. It will be affordable for millions, not just to millionaires."
    Volkswagen is demonstrating with the VW ID BUZZ concept vehicle in Detroit just how rich in features the electric mobility of tomorrow will be - an all- wheel drive spatial marvel with electric motors on front and rear axles, a fully automated driving mode (I.D. Pilot) and a new generation of indicators and controls. "The VW ID BUZZ is the next generation MPV. It is based on the new Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) and provides comfort and loads of space for long journeys. Its electric range as per the NEDC is up to 600 kilometres", explains Dr Frank Welsch, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for the Development Division. The VW ID BUZZ takes on new energy inductively or from a charging station. At a charging power of 150 kW, it takes around 30 minutes to charge up to 80 per cent.
    The VW ID Buzz on show in Detroit is thus fully following the Volkswagen brand strategy with its claim "We make the future real." Forming the basis of this strategy are the four areas of innovation:
    • VW ID Connected Community - Volkswagen will in future interconnect humans, cars and the environment with a Volkswagen User-ID.
    • Intuitive Usability - Volkswagen focuses on cars that are intuitive to operate and feature new display and control concepts.
    • VW ID Automated Driving - Volkswagen will make cars even safer and more comfortable by means of automated driving.
    • Smart Sustainability - Volkswagen is advancing the development of innovative high-volume electric car models part of VW camper history.
    VW ID BUZZ is not just a giant in terms of space: by virtue of its design it also becomes one of the world's most comfortable cars. At 3,300 mm, VW ID has an extremely long wheelbase. Located in between in the VW ID floor is the battery. It lowers the centre of gravity and ensures perfect weight distribution. The suspension of the VW ID BUZZ, with its electronically regulated shock absorbers, additionally ensures top-class comfort. The zero emission VW IDall-wheel drive system with output power of 275 kW / 374 PS (electric motors front and rear each delivering 150 kW) is the perfect match for the car's dynamic character. The version of the VW ID BUZZ presented in Detroit reaches 100 km/h in 5 seconds; its top speed is restricted to 160 km/h.

    Why not put a solar panel roofing on top and use it to generate more power instead of stopping at a battery parking station??

      *Richard Tom:* I like how you're thinking! But as a little girl in a taco shell commercial says: "porque no los dos?"/"why not both?" Why not both solar panels but make them somewhat see-through so they can still act as a skylight/sunroof? Hmm, may add a remote-controlled black screen if riders really don't want the sun coming inside; maybe more power to the solar panels? (Is that how they work?)

    • @MrApple187
      @MrApple187 5 років тому +13

      It can't happen because the solar panels don't produce enough power to charge or give it long range and if you had a enough to do it the weight would lower range

    • @werepants
      @werepants 5 років тому +9

      The amount of power you get from solar panels with such a limited area will be small. You might add a mile (probably less) to your daily range, but the cost for the panels would be very high. It makes more engineering and economic sense to just install the panels on your house.

    I like that the batteries are in the floor for better weight distribution.
    The floor should have metal shielding to protect passengers from EMF.
    Put solar panels on the roof, and on top of the car charging spaces. Then it will be truly revolutionary.
    I don't like the squinty-eyed look of the headlights. the old look was great; the headlights looked like round eyes, and the front hood looked like a smile. I think it should be created to be easy to maintain and repair. Make the roof higher in back so you can stand up if you are short. Put a solar powered exhaust fan in the roof for air circulation even when it is parked. Make pull-down combination window screens/shades built in above each window. Raise it up off the ground more for better clearance on rougher roads. Needs tougher tires. Offer an option to collect filtered rainwater off the roof for greywater usage. Include an electrical hookup to add external solar panels to it.

    Superb - like the girl in the UK Malteser AD - "I want one!" typical girlie that I am :
    1. What colour range will be available in 2020?
    2. How secure is the vehicle locking system (can it be hacked)?
    3. Will the wheel trim change, the hubcaps look like extractor vents?
    4. Will you have a special gel incorporated into the tyres for slow punctures?
    Why do I even mention that well, I strongly believe motor manufacturers need to work with tyre manufacturers to improve on the development and production of tyres - sustainability should be considered in all new concept vehicles/transport.
    Gel-filled tyres are available for high-end carbon fibre bicycle wheels - so why not with cars?
    5. Are the passengers protected from battery's electromagnetic field?
    All good otherwise, looks fabulous and it is a good size for all modern day requirements. Well done VW!

    I am so hoping that VW puts this model on the road quickly. It could be more rewarding to them than they realize, if it is a vehicle which will help anyone not able to legally drive a standard automobile of any kind to get a set of wheels and The independence which they hitherto lack.
    People such as myself. I'm legally blind and live in New York City, partly to work and partly to get around using the transit system. If I found myself obligated to leave town and return to the sticks, this van could probably save my life.

    A lot of comments on the shape of the vehicle but not much of any substance. Perhaps VW just needs to bring back the split windshield bus. The 1967 bus was the best one I ever had. Ventilation was great, no steering wheel shock, it had king pins instead of ball joints. Tires lasted over 60,000 miles, gas mileage was better than my 1970 and current bus.

  • @ThatJohnnyGuyyy

    VW, you took everything good about the old van out. It's a great seperate piece, but it's not a successor, it's a thing of it's own. But to be honest, i'd take the other, because it's less distracting, you have more space to put blankets and pillows and have a real camping experience, but with this one it's like a van modeled after a spaceship from Star Trek. It's a cool design, but really takes away too much of the old vibe that made the VW van great. Both are good for family vacations and have nice designs, but if you're more outdoorsy, go with the old. If you want a luxury road trip, the new one is good for that.

    Very cool concept. VERY interesting. Expected pricetag? Can it be had _without_ all the connectivity? Life expectancy of vehicle? Maintenance costs expected? Better VW honesty and accountability these days, than what they've demonstrated several years ago? When will pricetag come down so most people who need this, can afford to buy one? Or is this only target-marketed to those with larger incomes? One family guy made an old 73 VW bus into total solar electric, at relatively very low cost, though it lacks many bells-and-whistles this one has..it's wonderful, none the less. Perhaps the billions of lower-income people will either have to keep using gas and diesel engines, or DIY their own solar electric vehicles.

    Great. I think the entire world car companies should do the electric car engineering together . Don`t waste time, togehter, it`s a chance, a real big one for our planet.

    I own a '69 Westfalia...I'd put a pix here but don't know how...anyway this new "Bus" needs a back up gas motor generator so you don't get stuck 270 miles from home. There should not be a limit to how far a vehicle can go. Maybe if electric charging stations were more numerous that might not be so bad. I'd also suggest rather than the 'sunburn' giant roof window they put in a high efficiency Solar Panel to recharge the battery. Other than that since I have a 'Real' Bus I don't have to wish, this is a neat concept but It will likely hit the market at higher than $60K and cut out 90% of the buyers in the market.

    It'd a bit ugly to be honest, but that's subjective I suppose.
    The big problem is marketing an electric van as some form of campervan re-release. It's great if you want to go camping within a 200 or so mile range and have no ambition to travel further. At least give it the more expensive hybrid so you can easily travel 1000 miles with low emissions but I think fully electric defeats the point of this. Maybe in 10 years fast charging on the roadside will be more readily available and it may make sense then, but if you buy one now you'll probably be forking out thousands to replace the battery bank by then anyway.

    I don't mind the all-electric, I don't mind the colour, heck I don't even mind that it'll be expensive ... the only thing I don't like is the sloped windscreen. The original VW Campervan was liked because of the vertical windscreen, it had charm and a quirky style that this new version doesn't have. It was the same with the Mini, they updated it and it lost what made it popular.

    ditch the sun roof, and give it a full solar roof for passive charging.
    there are megawatts of energy being wasted on the roofs of cars and buildings during the day

    While there's a lot to be said for this model, it's a bummer (TO ME!) that it's overloaded with a bunch of useless fancy buzzwordy high tech options like shouting at it and "augmented reality" and safety override junk. Alas. I'll stick with my classic, mechanical, easy to fix, still drives wonderfully after over 40 years on the road original oldschool eye catching awesome Bus, thanks. Bummer, though, because I was really excited to see they were making them again. I do have to say, that lit up VW logo at the front is one of the coolest damn things I've seen in a while!! Also, the fact that it's basically already an RV, stock out of the factory, is pretty awesome, too.

      schradeya safety override junk? You don't like being safe?

    • @schradeya
      @schradeya 6 років тому

      I distinctly feel far less safe when I'm not in control of my own vehicle, and somebody else (who the hell knows who) has programmed it to think instead of me. If it takes over for me without my control, without knowing why I've done something, I can't imagine it's terribly safe. I don't trust that stuff yet.
