I still remembered my psu damaged and was worried that it will affect other components too, but luckily it wasn't xD

@@montreauxs I do component level repairs daily. Just rebuilt traces on a pcb yesterday. Any dork can replace a power supply, or talk about hardware and RBG.

you know folks...Greg here is educating y'all on how to diagnose a PC that refuses to work right, even I as a seasoned PC builder am learning new tricks. This Fix Or Flop series is incredibly valuable.
I purchased an EVGA 1600 platinum PSU a few years back. One week into using it a capacitor blew that sounded like a gunshot going off in my room. I thought my computer had blown apart. I received a free replacement from EVGA which I sold and went with an 850 instead. These things happen, but man it’s quite the experience.

I just ran into that a couple of weeks ago, had 2 pins swapped on a 6+2 PCIE cable - took a while to figure it out.
Yeah I was thinking it's worth at least checking the cables but that would require having the exact same cable spare which is probably pretty unlikely.
This was honestly a lot more interesting than a lot of videos in this series. Finally a fix that wasn’t the MoBo!

About 10 years ago, I was working on a compact digital camera, and I shorted the tiny flash capacitor with my thumb. In addition to the electric shock, it burned two tiny holes into my thumb with smoke and the smell of burnt flesh. Those tiny holes eventually healed, but Greg is right. Those capacitors store an enormous amount of electricity.
I have that EVGA 850 unit and so far so good after four years.
Always check the most logic issues, the first thing to check on the PSU is the fuse

About 3 years ago I built my computer. Imagine my chagrin when it didn't start. I didn't have a second PSU, but this just blew my mind. So just for S&G's I grabbed my multimeter, unplugged the power cable from the wall and computer, to ohm it out. Cables don't go bad...right? Especially when new? Low and behold I had a bad power cable fresh out of the box. Fortunately I could take a cable from another setup that's not used as much and there it is. Whew!!! Reputation as a mechanic with some knowledge SAVED!!!The best part, my son wanted to build his own computer. I had included him in building my computer.
I lost 3 power supplies in 6 years, luckily none of my equipment has ever gone to the grave along with the power supplies. I consider myself lucky in that case.

What brand of PSUs are you buying? Ive had a few PSU last me 5-7 years before changing it out for more power.
I have moved to Seasonic mostly with 7-10 year warranties. That being said, I had good luck with Corsair and some EVGA.
My psu lasted for 9 years before my cpu died. I gave away the rest + new cpu 2 years ago and it’s still working
I have a PC from 2009, still works on the same PSU, Corsair i think, 650W. I learnt to overspend on psu, because you can keep them a long time and they will save you headaches with instability or worse.

When I built my first PC, I couldn't get a picture. I took my pc to a professional and they diagnosed and fixed it right away. I didn't plug my graphics card in to the 8 pin. I felt so dumb.
in India, some shops scam you in cases like yours, telling you that your gpu is toast and you need to shell out bucks on a new one. Happened with a friend of mine who had no knowledge about PC parts
Tip from my father that is a retired telecomunications repairman. ALWAYS check if the cables are correctly connected. I do that with every module of my pc whenever I open it up to upgrade or clean it up.
Don’t worry about it. I’ve spent a lot of time troubleshooting my pc that wouldn’t on, only to find the power supply switch switched the wrong way
Many cards will power up but show a message to plug in your 6 or 8 pin power. probably to save you the visit to the shop (or more likely a returned card).
When I got back into building around 2014, I forgot to plug in the supplemental cpu power cable and called techsupport for the mobo manufacturer. That was the first question they asked me 🤣

I had a similar issue a while back. I bought an EVGA 750W PSU from their B stock. Installed it in pc & system would post & boot into windows for about 30-45 seconds & then system would shut off. I wouldn't be able to reboot it until about 2 minutes later where it would repeat pattern. Contacted EVGA, absolutely no issues with RMA, got exact same model back & have had NO issues since. That's why buying from a good manufacturer is worth it.

Usually, if you buy from reputable brands, you're mostly fine. Just don't buy those shitty Chinese no name PSUs ^^
I’m glad for this series. Just finished up finding out why my cousin’s PC was overheating (I built the system myself and did some maintenance not long ago)
Symptoms: Shut down on home-screen without running tasks and 10-15 minutes of gaming then auto shut down
Checked every component, last being the CPU itself.
I instantly witnessed the problem…I didn’t apply enough thermal paste!
Problem solved!
Did some updates, went into bios, enabled XMP, Asus performance mode, hit save and restart only to run into another problem!
Debug gave me a Ram issue, cleared cmos and nothing
Thankfully I had my own PC and took out a single ram stick, took out his, inserted mine and boom! Boot up!
Disabled XMP, asus performance mode, saved and restarted. Everything fine with my stick
Turned off and inserted his ram and boom! Boot up!
All in all, your channel has saved helped my PC journey and I can’t thank you enough!
Your videos are always so fun to watch. Been watching for a while and it's inspired me to go to tech school for something, haven't decided what field yet but this would be a fun side job.

Just upgraded from a Phenom II/R9 280 pre-built to an i7 12700kf/gtx 1080 creator build as my first build and didn't get a post first go around. Thanks to the handy troubleshooting I've learned from this series I managed to find the problem with the mobo so I knew what to return and get my first pc going and MUCH faster than the 12 year old rig before it. I actually submitted a request with you but got it fixed anyways so no worries lol

I feel like the power supply repair could probably be worth a video of it's own, it not being valuable just adds to the appeal of just trying to go into and fixing it and the video itself would probably cover any labour costs on actually getting it working.

This is my favorite series
Power supplies typically have a fuse on the input that should blow in a surge and there is also at least one MOV on input that might blow. The symptoms indicate a surge to me, being that the power supply acts like there is no power. Those components are fairly simple to identify and replace if you know what you are doing. Beyond the fuse and MOV, modern power supplies are typically cheap enough and complicated enough that I wouldn't likely mess with it.
I typically use UPSs on my computers which will add extra protection, from much more than just surges and often are built so they don't blow up when there is a problem. All of that in addition to the fact that they provide battery backup so you can save and shutdown cleanly in case of a power outage protecting from corrupt storage.
I've been using bequiet! power supplies for the last ten years. I had a bequiet! Straight Power 750w Gold break about 6 months before the warranty was up and bequiet! replaced it with a Dark Power Pro 750w Platinum. Two years later...still using it. Not bad at all.

Careful with power supplies, capacitors can carry enough charge to be lethal, and they dont always stay completely discharged either.

You get what you pay for, with the Bronze rating you get good piece of mind and quality components. The higher up the scale the better the components and efficiency, it has to be said that at 120v 60Hz the current is double of my 240v 50Hz input. I also have a fuse in the plug but the RCD would trip before that worked, if the power supply was a cheap one with no rating i think it would have taken a lot more components with it as it died. Great video and you're getting nearer 1 million subscribers , not long now.

I had an R9 5950X/RTX2080 going black while gaming. I did various CPU stress tests to no blackout. Ran one GPU stress test and black. Bough new PSU to replace my PowerSpec 850 and solved the problem. Would love to see something covered that showed weak power rails for the VGA sockets on PSUs. (It could still have been the GPU but while I was at microcenter they had an RTX 4090 in stock so I bought that and a new PSU.)
I'd first check the standby voltage rail as the unit is not responding at all. You should have a dedicated part of the PSU providing the voltage for the standby state (PSU ON / System OFF). The power rails can be totally fine. You usually have a small sub-board generating the +5VSB rail which makes the PSU "alive" once your turn the main switch on. The power rails don't turn on until you trigger them through the ATX pins from the motherboard. But because this standby rail is always connected to the mains, it is the first to absorb any spikes from the grid and potentially fail. It is also always dissipating a small amount of heat which makes it age faster than the rest of the PSU.

The same thing happened to me with my EVGA power supply!
Three months after building my first PC, while I was gaming my PC just died with no warning. The weather was great, no lightning. I knew I had to start with the power supply and it came with a tester. Sure enough the power supply was dead just like in the video. Obviously it was still under warranty so I sent it back and got a replacement. But that was literally the first time a psu died on me in my lifetime. Especially a brand new one. This is not a dig at EVGA, their replacement is doing great.

This right here is a truly broken gaming PC, it is in many pieces for assembly now, so stay with me.
Maybe I missed it. Are you going to send this unit back to EVGA to let them diagnose and possibly replace it? I used to work on a production line and had to troubleshoot telecommunications equipment down to the component level for repair. I loved stuff like this.
One of our friends pc shut down on him randomly, So he went through reseating the ram on a discord call with us and turned his pc back on. To which it started smoking instantly from the PSU turned out to be a bug inside that made a bridge.
We had a unit shut down at a plant I used to work at, an ant got across a connection on a programmable logic board and shut it down!😲😲
You mentioned that the PSU is EVGA, but your clip shows "Type 4" cables, which I believe are exclusive to a handful of Corsair PSUs.
Somethin's funky here, and it's coming from the direction of your client.
you have the fancy blue blobs near the top of the pcb in that psu at 14:24, those and the orangeish yellow disc to the right of them are the input protections, those will have fried to save the rest of the unit (in theory). the blue ones are Y Capacitors, and the disc things next to it should be an NTC Thermistor, and possibly a mov and an X Capacitor someplace there, too. (and hopefully a fuse as well).
Hey greg, just wanted to ask what you do with rigs that have very simple fixes, for example like just resetting the cmos or it was just miswired because we usually never see those kind of videos, so do u record those rigs or just fix it and give it to the owner because it was a simple fix?

I once had a superb Corsair PSU fully modular and the PSU cabel (UK) had a 13A fuse in it. It ruined the PSU and my Radeon 5850. In fact I think it did the Phenom board and all the components bar the memory and drives. Thankfully, by this video alone, looks like modern protection is far better!
I had EVGA 550 bronze go out within 2 years and I sent it in for repair/replacement. EVGA sent me a 650 gold as a replacement. EVGA customer service is on point

I think it would have been just before or after the main switch, not sure on EVGA but thats the norm
@@tomr3422 There are fuses after the transformer, in fact modern PSUs have multiple fuse points. and they don't use glass inline fuses anymore, and some fuses are actually small SMDs, so you can't actually see if they are blown, you have to check via continuity.
I have a Seasonic power supply that has been through a good amount of power surges still has not failed to this day.
Lesson of the day - never skimp on the PSU.
He used a 650w evga psu, i'd hardly call that skimping on the psu...
My supposedly excellent Seasonic PSU exploded with a bang. Everything can blow up, even the best ones.

@@andy816896 True, but it's still a good lesson and a reminder. Like Greg said, this PSU did it's job and saved the downstream components. I blew up a thousand dollar rig once because I used the PSU that came with the case. Killed the CPU, the motherboard, and a hard drive. I came home and it was just cycling on and off.
@@andy816896 Yes, it's not totally skimping on the PSU but just because it's EVGA does not mean it's a quality unit. It's a cheaper 550w, Bronze rated PSU. These types of units are usually made from cheaper Chinese parts and caps (capacitors). The cheaper caps are much more prone to expand with the daily in-rush current and fail within a shorter lifespan - sometimes premature. It might not be the case here but it still failed, regardless. The more expensive units use all Japanese caps and that's what you pay for.
I built my girlfriend a pc recently actually and it had these symptoms! After basic cable checks, i decided to get a power supply tester to double check it (i bought from evga bstock so wanted to be 100% sure). After that worked i decided to double check the cpu and sure enough a bent pin! I was able to use some fine tweezers to bend it back and it now works flawlessly.
Crazy to have almost a 1-1 scenario as one of gregs videos and also take the SAME exact steps to fix it! (even though the problem was different) Makes me kinda proud of myself

Never use metallic pencils or rulers, or wear rings or metal watchbands when working with electrical equipment. This rule is very easy to forget, especially when you are showing some electrical part pointing with metallic pencil.
did you check the 110/220v selector switch?
Most of the newer ones don't have that anymore.
I once had an issue with an EVGA Supernova 750 B2 semi-modular power supply where it would turn on only some of the time and supply correct voltages on all pins, other times it would not turn on at all. I bought it second-hand for listed price of 500 CZK (equivalent to 20 USD), and the issue already showed when I went to the sellers place to and tried it out, so I got a 20% discount and took it with the risk that it might not work.
When I opened it and tried to turn it on, I discovered that it would turn on more reliably if I wiggled a daughterboard slot-soldered into the PSU's main PCB (which supplies the +5VSB and contains circuitry that basically controls the standby/power). Resoldering all joints that connect the daughterboard to the main PCB seems to have fixed it, because the PSU now runs my brother-in-laws gaming PC which he uses daily, and has been going without a hitch for the last 4 or so years. Probably a cold solder joint somewhere. Happens even to the better of PSU manufacturers, and it may not cause issues right away, but after a certain amount of heat cycles.
Try measuring if the PSU supplies the +5VSB when connected to mains, and if not, try bridging the COM and PSON pins, and wiggle one of the daughterboards. If it turns on, it might just need a resolder.
make sure the power switch is good I've had a few on various makes that fail, they fail to make contact or fail to turn off although the click sounds ok, also there will be an onboard fuse near the mains near the socket on the main board covered in black shrink tube it's soldered to the board.

Ahh the Irony of that power supplies naming convention 550 BS...yea, 550 watts these days is BS.
I always smell a power supply. You can get a burnt smell if anything is blown. I have only had a couple that were bad and did not smell burnt. Some power supplies have a light burn smell whether bad or not. But when something burns up they have a stronger than normal burnt smell. For some it really obvious. The higher end ones have protection built in to protect the boards when they blow.
I for one would love to see a follow up video on that powersupply.
I ordered a EVGA 750BQ from Amazon one time. Some how. We got cables from a different psu thrown in and it fried all the ssd's connected to it. Took to the third time sending it in to get the cables sent with, tested and confirmed my suspension. Only thing that made me mad is my ssd's were not covered. Funny enough. They didnt send cables back. Had to call them and remind them I needed new ones sent back. Lol

easy and SAFE check you can do without opening the PSU is measuring resistence to GND with the multimeter of the various colors on ATX plug. if any of it is less than 10 ohms you know theres an issue inside PSU

@1:12 This Xmas I was able to find on EBAY an Asus x99-A MB (7 year old) to replace my failing system ... why is that so special??? ... IT WAS NEW! Yup, new from Alaska ... the cpu cover wasnt even removed yet and it was still sitting in its plasic bag untouched ... but it wasn't a x99-a ... it was a x99-a II .... still damn lucky to have found it and the system now works like a charm. Even had a chance to replace my old SATA boot drive with a new older model (yet compatible) M.2 Samsung 980 ....NOICE!
A new F or F video always gets a quick click. It was good to see a different sort of failure than we've been getting. I've had one power supply failure in 8 years or so of building PCs, and that failure was not a total blackout but a 12V rail (I think) that lost its marbles. I play a fair amount of FF14, and the behavior I got was utterly bizarre: in-game clock jumping wildly with day/night shifts every few seconds, soundtrack music playing much faster than normal, my character running on her own, stopping, running again... I never would have believed these behaviors could be caused by inconsistent voltage, but apparently they can because they're controlled by the client and not the server. I was lucky that no other components bought the farm. Corsair replaced the year-old PSU under warranty. This was about seven years ago, and the replacement is still running fine in one of test rigs.

You know, I'm surprised no one offers caps to go over the 6 and 8-pin connectors for just such applications.

You should check for the psu 24 pin cable there are 2 pins that need to be shorted for the psu to turn on
If you still have that faulty psu unit, can you pls try testing it with a different modular cable. That even might have been the case. THE CABLES (internal fault). Btw love your work, videos and this playlist. Cheers..

I had this same exact problem a few months ago. My build wasn't turning on at all, and I wound up replacing the PSU (along with a few other things to be safe).
Even when the issue is found fast, i still find the video entertaining.

Years ago, my little brother had his friend bring his rig over for me to troubleshoot a no post situation. I ended up swapping in one of my boards to troubleshoot. Still no post, but fans were spinning. I said "huh... that's weird".
I was not thinking clearly that day, almost like I was in a fog. I realized my folly too late. I put another one of my old boards in. Same situation. Turns out that PSU was bad, and it bricked 2 of my boards along with their CPU's.
