    I'd say he probably looks like what is described in Master of Mankind when he finally enters the Webway to fight Drach'nyen.
    "His features were those of one born in the wild lands of Ancient Eurasia. His skin was a Terran blend of bronze and burnt umber, His eyes darker still, His hair darkest of all. The long black fall of His hair was held by a simple circlet crown of metal leaves, binding the mane back from His face so He could fight. More practical than regal."

      If by true face you mean the one not psychically projected into other people's perception but rather the physical unenhanced face the emperor (at that moment) had, I think you're right. Corax is an infiltration expert, it would make sense he could sneak glances past the mask. But I think he emperor not only psychically projects his image into other people's minds (like how Corax can make himself disappear from people's perceptions) but he also often physically transforms his own appearance, like how Magnus can shapeshift.
      After all, the Emperor can do everything the Primarchs can - his power just isn't diluted into focusing on different aspects, and he has had a *long* time to practice.

  • @Eric-rr3zd

    The emperor's true appearance is probably a really plain looking dude. Think of the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. E is the holy grail. But he has an ability that makes people see him in whatever form makes them the most trustful and loyal to him. I do not think it is a passive ability though, I think he is intentionally using this on all of them. I also don't think Corax saw through anything, I think that split image was exactly what E intended Corax to see and neither of them are his true form.

      Makes sense given Corax has a nerfed version of this ability himself.
      Unless the lore around Coraxs stealth powers has changed, as far as I’m aware he does it by altering other peoples perception of him. The emperor can do the same thing but unlike Corax it seems like the emperor does it by default and needs to concentrate to stop.
      As far as I’m aware, outside maybe the custodes, no two people ever see the same person when looking at the emperor at the same time.
      It’s possible that because Coraxs power, despite the ways it’s different than the emperors, is fundamentally based in the same idea(fucking with how people see you) that Corax is resistant to this affect and the version of the emperor he saw is the closest to his true form.
      I say closest because given how powerful the emperor is, how old he is, and how he tends to interact with the warp, that he may not even have a “true form”
      In 40k, the body and soul can be separated, and if you’re op enough, your soul can exist after your body dies and is conscious and aware of what’s going on. Perpetuals specifically seem to have the essence of what makes them who they are operate completely independent of their bodies. That’s why you turn one to dust and it’ll respawn somewhere else, all you did was destroy their body. Their mind/soul just got a new flesh vessel to pilot.
      The emperor seems unique in how he interacts with the warp though. Even before his worship as a god, the emperor likely would have been the cause for millennia of rumors, beliefs, folklore, and mythology surrounding him in his early years. This would then cause the warp to do its thing and try to make that belief real. Every thought becomes a literal thing in the warp, every story becomes a reality. This means that the faces of the emperor are the Warps way of making the seemingly infinite perceptions of the emperor real. He is all of the faces, and none at the same time

    • @JZ0UK
      @JZ0UK Рік тому

      @@ianharrison5758 there is also the unusual degree of trust shown with Corax, which to me suggests Corax might have some additional insight. Of course, maybe no one is meant to see a real concrete being where the Emperor is, and it's meant to be a sort of idealised projection - people imagine the Emperor rather than he projects consistently or even intentionally on an individual basis?
      That said, my view has been thoroughly wobbled by Fury of Magnus and then the events in Echoes of Eternity... Although, in a bizarre way, that could add further weight on the idea that everything with the Emperor is a fun house mirror of the viewers' hopes and dreams. I can't remember reading any descriptions of him from an Eldar who actually saw him, but I got the impression that he's a bit of an Ork magnet, neverborn appear uniquely terrified of him.... And the silent king seems to see him as a moribund force that won't adapt to changing circumstances (a problem he's presumably gotten quite sick of in necron politics 😂).

    What I like most about his faces is that they are really a mirror of what another wants to see. Perturabo sees a man shorter than himself, compassionate and benevolent with a greater mind. Vulkan sees a man weathered but caring at his core. Another representation I hope gets even more focus is how the Emperor looks in the Warp during the Siege, an old man in furs fighting Horus as a rabid dog and shadowed by the Chaos Gods.

    They see an idealised version which is THEIR version of perfection. This is why Arkhan Land saw The Emperor as a the stereotypical scientist in a white coat. He saw him as HIS (Land's) version of the perfect man, a scientist not a warrior or a king. Did Big E do this conciously or was it just a result of him throwing off so much Psychic/warp energy that people's minds couldn't process it and just created an idealised image in their mind? I think it was just how people's own brains made sense of seeing him the same as how his NAME as he said it to Uriah (priest in The Last Church) is not really revelation but actually many names and sounds and meanings and the human brain can't figure it out but just says "Is it... Revelation... yeah... go with That"

    Each Primarch is an avatar of one or more of the Emperors own aspects and traits, so it makes sense that his sons don't see the whole, but just what resonated the most with their own self.
    Also, and this might be the more important reason as far as I see it, the Emperor is using people like tools. Sometimes, he is just wielding them like a hammer, which is easy to achieve with an order, but often enough, his goals are of more delicate nature and so have to be his tools. So sometimes he needs to use people like chess figures and without them even realising that they are used like tools and part of this manipulation is that everyone sees the Emperor as he wants and needs them to see him.
    In case of the Lion, for instance, the way he appears for him makes perfect sense considering the Lions nature. His brothers never fully trusted him because of his secretive nature, which is exactly what the Emperor targeted here. He induced the feeling in El'Johnson that he and only he sees and knows something his brothers never can and will see. Damn, the Emperor even went all out with the hood and all that. As a result, the Lion gets the confirmation he wants and needs and a secret that makes him feel important to keep, while the Emperor gets the unquestioning soldier and tool he wants and needs.
    And apart from that, I think that even the Emperor himself can't tell how his face is truly looking anymore. I think he even said it himself that he wore so many identities and faces over all those years, for so many reasons, that even he can't tell anymore which face came first. Adapting his appearance to his surroundings might have become an automatic reflex and who can tell the original color of an object that is constantly changing its color?

    I think that the point of The Lion’s viewpoint is that he doesn’t necessarily see _past_ the obfuscation, but he sees the obfuscation itself. It’s not physically the closest depiction of The Emperor that exists, but metaphorically and from a story perspective it describes him perfectly. The fact that Russ can describe what emotions his eyes portray but literally cannot describe the color of them is telling. None of them have ever seen his face. The Lion sees the metaphor laid bare, albeit with his own nature reflected. A being wreathed in light, wearing a resplendent garment over an impenetrable shell describes the Emperor perfectly, just not physically.

    • @Noble6Espeo
      @Noble6Espeo 2 роки тому

      I think the Lion ment more that the others see a face, a person, but cannot describe it after. They see something they need to see in their father, conversely the Lion sees a warlord in armor with a hood, in otherwords sure he still sees a Dark Angel, albiet one in armor unlike theirs, but he's seeing nothing.
      The Emporer is a secretive man and the Lion, with little to no communication, knows this and does not care. He does not care what he is told or not, how others see him or don't, and neither does the Emporer. This is, in many ways, a lot like the Emperor and is often remarked on by the other Primarchs who state he is the most like their father. So when he says he sees the truth I think he means that the others project what they need. A caring father, a wise king, a great khan, but he sees himself in his father sure, but he doesn't need that nor care. He sees the true nature of his father; secretive and insightful with necessary and cruel plans, much like himself and many primarchs, and he follows his fathers will irregardless of the fact he knows he is not told everything and many will hate him.

This extends to the traitors as no one thought they could turn him, even Conrad, and even a changer of ways saw zero futures where he could.

    I think he is very similar to Magnus' appearance. People note, that when they look at Magnus, every person tends to see something different, with the only consistent feature being that he is always one eyed. I think it was Ahriman that even directly compares this to how it is when looking at the Emperor. There is no clear definition of how Magnus looks, even his size seems entirely random (though as he wants it to appear) with him being described as a giant at one time, yet able to comfortably sit down in a mortal's quarters to talk with him.
    So I think that both the Emperor and Magnus tend to actively change their appearance to suit what their intended targets/conversation partners want to see them as/to fit their tastes. Magnus is for example mentioned to appear more martial when talking to Russ and more scholarly when talking to Lorgar. We know they have no difficulty in affecting even the perception of thousands of people at the same time as well, considering the stunt Magnus pulled during the siege of Terra.

Maybe he's like Galactus in marvel where other races see their own race in galactus except the emperor is probably doing this passively and on purpose. I say this because our golden emperor is just a man with many facets, flaws and parts of his personality like everyone else exept he only has "above omega level" abilites. I quote this because fuck powerscaling. He is the oldest human with many lives but its still him. His true name matters to Valdor from what i see in the lore is because names to us give us power. We need to label things even ourselves. Its just what we do. The idea of the emperor being more than a man is accurate to our standards in the real world but if he existed there might be a chance one of us could be as powerful as the emperor so any of us can be the emperor therefore everyone can be the emperor hence his many facades. I hope i made sensr

    I like to think about the primarchs as warp entity’s mixed with a fraction of the emperors very soul given flesh, so they would likely see the aspect of himself they were derived from . While considering that they are not the fragment itself but it is the cornerstone of what they were made of.

    *ONE HERESY LATER*
    "Okay so that got out of hand real fast, let's pretend it was actually for a good reason. Like, Horus went mad or something, Magnus broke the webway experiment..."
    "Why me?!"
    "You did actually break it, Magnus."
    "I did nothing wrong!"
    "That had better not become a meme...."
    _And that was truly what happened in the Horus Heresy. The true events were too embarrassing for the fledgling Imperium to survive, and the Emperor cringed so hard at how stupid his kids were, that he had to be interred on the golden throne due to cringe_
    _And also because Magnus broke the webway._

    There was a novel that has Vulkan, Ferrus Manus and Mortarion were fighting on a jungle planet against the Eldar. The Emperor appears before Vulkan in a guise as a normal human. The human, I believe, questions, challenges and reassures Vulkan as the campaign appears to be going poorly for the Imperials. Vulkan eventually realizes that this human is the Emperor and before Vulkan can question the human that human disappears. Vulkan then recalls that The Emperor told him that he "would watch over them" as they persecute the Great Crusade.

    If the fan theory is true that all the primarchs are psykers of differing abilities and strengths, then they could be seeing a different aspect of his soul, what with Emps being of a gestalt soul made from the souls of thousands of bronze age psykers who committed mass ritualistic suicide to overwhelm the still-forming daemons and chaos of the warp and reincarnate into a new being.

    Rho's answer is that each primarch hallucinates differently. This is insufficient. It does not explain how or why beyond an ambiguous "they see what is within themselves". Why? Whats the mechanic? The only mechanic that has a shred of evidence is that Emperor is doing something that enables this....some field that can be interpreted, or that each guise is intentional. Its one or the other, and everything else is just fancy.

    Emerald armor and golden robes - this is only “so Dark Angels” in a post heresy world. At the time, the Dark Angels colors are black, red, and white. The green comes after, perhaps at that point inspired by the Lion’s perspective of the Emperor.

  • @Tectonix26

    I think a fascinating aspect of The Lion's perspective is that his is the only impression where he describes an appearance (green armour, gold cloak.), rather than a projected nature (weathered, deep and humoured, care-worn).

    The concept of projecting or shape shifting to better suite an environment or produce a desired outcome makes sense when considering one as skilled and powerful as The Emperor. However, one thing has always picked at my brain...
    Would the facade not have dropped when he was entombed upon the Golden Throne? How could he maintain the facade after effectively being killed? And even if he wasn't dead, why burn the energy maintaining so many different appearances? If he's truly more god-like now and has lost his sense of humanity, why would this more robotic and unfeeling form of the Emperor even care what he looked like now? Most artist's renditions show him as a mummified and skeletal cadaver. Would this form be that of a giant soldier who occupied his golden armor in the faces of so many, or would this be the remains of a shriveled old man the size and stature of Malcador?

  • @donclyburn9497

    I think corax can see the Emperor just as the Sisters of Silence do . Corax can pretty much project that he isn't there that power to project onto others. He could probably plainly see the man and his emanating power. Magnus could probably see his warp power on a level only he and Malcador possess

  • @brendanmuller7301
    @brendanmuller7301 2 роки тому

    I feel like we'll never truly know how he looked in life, I mean much like his son magnus he could probably change his size at will from normal human to a giant like the primarchs. But for his actual face I feel like only the perpetuals that had known him for millenia before the events of 30k would know. After all even a sister of silence seems to fall under the emperors psychic spell due to his power.
