There's a reason why this movie reminds you of Judge Dredd. The guy who wrote the script wrote it to be a Judge Dredd movie, but couldn't gets the rights, so reworked the script into an original story.
This movie is a work of art .... everything is balanced.... even Dick's words "Good Business is where you find it" get's repeated by Clarence to Sal later on in the film.
Most of filming was done in Dallas, Texas so it was extremely hot especially for Peter Weller. He would lose about 3 pounds of water weight every day in the Robo suit so they had to install a very tiny fan in it to keep him cool and prevent dehydration.
There were only 2 movies in my entire life where people came out from the theater and went right back in line to see a movie 2 times in one afternoon.... Star Wars (A New Hope - wasn't called that at the time) and this RoboCop film. If you are interested in how well loved this film is.
I'll be honest I don't even think the CEO is that great. That younger exec got killed and all he was thinking of was interest payments. Mostly all bad apples in that company probably.
Great reaction! It's a great movie! Robocop is my favorite childhood hero. And I also like the cool robot ED-209! And also the final scene with this robot at the end 39:53. Poor robot 🤖
The only parts of Robocop that are still Murphy are 1) his brain and 2) part if his digestive system. The rest is robot. Hes a terminator with a human brain, basically. His "face" is a death mask made from Murphy after his death (hence the plugged bullet hole). This was apparently to ensure that he wouldnt go compleley insane if he somehow got his memories back and saw another face on his body (see Robocop 2 for an example 😂)
So he technically can starve, right? Also I find it interesting they left a face underneath the visor though im guessing its just so we have an easier time relating to him.

Schwartzenegger was considered for RoboCop, but he was a very top-heavy muscular man in 1987. The suit would have looked comically disproportionate with his body. The robotic one-liners would have fit him, but he did not have the acting skill to pull off the reflective human lines.
The fact that it reminds you of Dredd is not random at all, it's because they partially based on it, in fact in the behind the scenes you can see the first prototype of the Robosuit had a Dredd helmet!
Robocop 2 is worth watching. It isn't as gory, and leans a little more into comedy, but still lots of neat stuff to see.. Anything beyond the first two films isn't really worth it. Robocop 3 is god-awful, mainly because Peter Weller doesn't return in the role.
Keep in mind you just watched the "less brutal" version 😂 The Directors Cut adds about 7 seconds of gore back in, mostly with the ED209 board room and Murphy death bloodbaths.
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouseAbsurdity was totally what Veerhoven was going for... and he argued to the ratings board (correctly) that by pulling back on the blood you end up with something that "feels" more realistic. i heard reports that a number of parents brought their kids for an entertaining PG scifi movie but apparently thought differently starting with the unisex police locker room scene and ultimately pulling their kids out of the theater after ed-209's boardroom demonstration ...
Great review! Keep it up. If you two have not seen 'Blade Runner', 1982 (i think), give it a watch, it's subject was way ahead of it's time when it came out and pretty much set the standard for every video game and movie that had a cyberpunk/dystopian world. It will also give you two a lot to talk about at the end. I also like to remind people that it's a drama/neo noir and not really an action movie. (some people always come into the movie thinking its an action movie (it does have some action), and seem disappointed when it is not).
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse I found out many years ago, I thought Dredd was much newer in the comic world. It says 1977 was his first appearance. Verhoeven got some ideas from him. Also, where's Dredd 2, lol?
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse Judge Dredd and the other 2000AD comics had a LOT of influence on comics. It's downright weird more of that stuff hasn't been attempted in movie form. There's an upcoming Rogue Trooper animated movie though, and it's described by the writer as if Guardians of the Galaxy had a baby with The Raid. And Dredd definitely had similarities with The Raid, so it's all an inbred mess of lovely action :)
This is a movie by Paul Verhoeven who is known to fill a lot of his movies with satire, that's why it's has a quirky/funny vibe with the commercials and tv news. He also made two other movies that have this type of satire in them so many group this movie as part of a trilogy. The other two movies by Paul Verhoeven are 'Total Recall' 1990, with Arnold Schwarzenegger and 'Starship Troopers' 1997. which the newer video game called 'Helldivers II' is based off of. Paul is known for his brutal portrayal of blood and gore. Both movies that I mentioned are fantastic and they are also considered a must watch for 80's classic movies.
I loved starship troopers as a kid, with the satire just going way above my head at the time. Also Helldivers is a fantastic game. I did watch the original Total Recall a while ago, but Jane hasn't seen either, so it'll be fun to do a wife reacts eventually!
None of that satire was Paul's idea. It was written by Ed into the script long before Paul was hired to direct. In fact, Ed Neumeier directed some of those satiric commercials, like TJ Lazer (uncredited). Unlike most other Hollywood writers, Ed was on set every day and was deeply involved in all aspects of the creative process.
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse I said he liked to fill some of his movies with satire, I did not say he wrote (which does not matter to me), if he did not like the satire, no matter who wrote it, it would not have been in the movie!
I think I figured out what's most awesome about this: Nobody is afraid. Not the heroes, not the villains. This is a world without fear, where everyone is just themselves at their utmost. It's dystopian, and yet no one despairs. There is no lack of hope. Everyone is brave. Joyful.
I found your channel recently and have been enjoying your videos. The scene that stuck with me for a long time was when the guy was melting from the toxic waste. I saw Robocop for the first time in the early 90s when I was 15 or 16 and when I saw that scene I thought I was going to throw up. It didn't give me nightmares, but it was disgusting. I like this movie and would also give this original a score of 4 out of 5. I have seen the remake once a few years ago, so I don't remember much other than I thought it was "meh". However, I'm generally not a fan of remakes, so don't listen to me. The 2014 version is more of a modern interpretation of the story, so younger people might like it more than the original, but what do I know..
tyvm! yea that scene with the henchman melting was wild. It's pretty rare when the remake matches up to the original. There are some things they can approve on so who knows!
i want him to go back in time and be a knight, or start a career in pro wrestling.. or at least get married to mrs robocop, and hang out in bars.. but i dont recall any of that happening in robocop 2
The "intermissions" was a way for Verhoeven to do the worldbuilding without bogging down the movie with needless exposition dialogues. It might seem strang,e but in our modern world, you can identify a places culture and time frame BY its TV programmes/Ads, its a reflection of the society who made them and their needs/way of life in a sens You see news about Wars in other countries, accidental Death Rays from space been shot and the news casters are like "Oh well thats another tuesday" and all with that fake and detached TV host trademarked Smile. Then you see the "Family board game" wich is basicly Risk/Warships with Nukes and how jolly they all are, wich is also reminiscent of the Cold War era propaganda. And the fact that Corporations and Out of Control capitalism is reigning free. It all paint in a few scenes a pretty bleak Dystopian future AND it gets in some funny quips at the 80's/90's American society, since it is a Movie made by an European director, so he as a different view/lens when it comes to "American culture" Its something that he used in his other Dystopian Scyfy movie, Starship Troopers.
We have both seen Dredd (2012) so it wouldn't really be a reaction video as how people traditionally see it. Who knows maybe we do a watch-along in the future if there's enough demand for it (with the transparency that we've watched it before). We haven't seen Judge Dredd (1995) yet...maybe that one's worth a watch/react?
Normally, I would never refer to Peter Weller’s acting as ‘robotic’, but I make an exception here, since that’s actually a good thing. Man, machine, legend. 🦾 The mistake Lewis made wasn’t in looking down. That’s the right thing to do. If a guy is known to be a likely armed and dangerous criminal, you have to make sure he’s not really reaching for a weapon rather than his zipper. Even allowing him to do that was more of a risk than she should have taken. The mistake was allowing the perp to get within arm’s reach, when the situation wasn’t secure. Sure, we all make mistakes, but some are just too careless and costly to be making.

@@rogerlynch5279 Oh that's very interesting! Thank you for that RoboCop trivia. I myself have dressed up as batman on a few Halloweens and was a big fan of Batman & Robin as a kid even though the movie panned critically.

Schwartzenegger was considered for RoboCop, but he was a very top-heavy muscular man in 1987. The suit would have looked comically disproportionate with his body. The robotic one-liners would have fit him, but he did not have the acting skill to pull off the reflective human lines.
I can only imagine how big the suit would've been to fit Arnold. Who knows he might've been able to pull it off but Peter Weller did such a good job!
I really love Robocop 2 (1990) too. It's weaker but still has its moments. The 2014 remake is God-awful
We got a lot of requests for RoboCop 2 so it's def a movie we plan to react to in the future. Sucks about the remake 😐
The fact that it reminds you of Dredd is not random at all, it's because they partially based on it, in fact in the behind the scenes you can see the first prototype of the Robosuit had a Dredd helmet!
ohh that's dope, ty for that tidbit!
Robocop 2 is worth watching. It isn't as gory, and leans a little more into comedy, but still lots of neat stuff to see.. Anything beyond the first two films isn't really worth it. Robocop 3 is god-awful, mainly because Peter Weller doesn't return in the role.
@@shanedoe3462 we’ll keep the sequel in mind!

Keep in mind you just watched the "less brutal" version 😂 The Directors Cut adds about 7 seconds of gore back in, mostly with the ED209 board room and Murphy death bloodbaths.
lol that's awesome! Wasn't aware of the directors cut. Extra 7 seconds during those scenes would make me laugh at the absurdity of it all.
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouseAbsurdity was totally what Veerhoven was going for... and he argued to the ratings board (correctly) that by pulling back on the blood you end up with something that "feels" more realistic. But they ended up cutting it anyway to avoid an X rating.. so this was the theatrical cut. The uncut version didnt come out til the late 90s.
i heard reports that a number of parents brought their kids for an entertaining PG scifi movie but apparently thought differently starting with the unisex police locker room scene and ultimately pulling their kids out of the theater after ed-209's boardroom demonstration ...
Haha I can see it!

ED-209 was a prototype, probably needed a few software updates to master the stairs! 😜

(some people always come into the movie thinking its an action movie (it does have some action), and seem disappointed when it is not).
tyvm! we've both seen both of the Bladerunners, but it's been a while with the original. I'll be honest I enjoyed the newer one way more.
Yup, Blade Runner, RoboCop and even more so Highlander.... if these didn't happen modern video games would never have existed.
You guys mentioned Dredd, Robocop's look actually got some influences from Dredd, Judge has been around since the 70s.
@@eXistenZ1864 ohh nice! Thought it would be the other way around!
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse I found out many years ago, I thought Dredd was much newer in the comic world. It says 1977 was his first appearance. Verhoeven got some ideas from him. Also, where's Dredd 2, lol?
@@eXistenZ1864 oh man I wish. We loved that one so much
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse Maybe one day
@@OfficialDNJmoviehouse Judge Dredd and the other 2000AD comics had a LOT of influence on comics.
Those aren't clear stall dividers, they are splash guards.
Those DOW/SP500 alerts above the stalls must've been too distracting

😆
The "intermissions" was a way for Verhoeven to do the worldbuilding without bogging down the movie with needless exposition dialogues.
It might seem strang,e but in our modern world, you can identify a places culture and time frame BY its TV programmes/Ads, its a reflection of the society who made them and their needs/way of life in a sens
You see news about Wars in other countries, accidental Death Rays from space been shot and the news casters are like "Oh well thats another tuesday" and all with that fake and detached TV host trademarked Smile.
Then you see the "Family board game" wich is basicly Risk/Warships with Nukes and how jolly they all are, wich is also reminiscent of the Cold War era propaganda.
And the fact that Corporations and Out of Control capitalism is reigning free.
It all paint in a few scenes a pretty bleak Dystopian future AND it gets in some funny quips at the 80's/90's American society, since it is a Movie made by an European director, so he as a different view/lens when it comes to "American culture"
Its something that he used in his other Dystopian Scyfy movie, Starship Troopers.

Normally, I would never refer to Peter Weller’s acting as ‘robotic’, but I make an exception here, since that’s actually a good thing. Man, machine, legend. 🦾
The mistake Lewis made wasn’t in looking down.
That's fair, arm's reach was the biggest mistake after getting the drop on him.
