Really nice shelter. You could have saved yourself a lot of time, energy and reduced the quantity of spruce boughs had you covered the top and rear with a tarp and then added some spruce over for insulation.
I wouldn’t necessarily put such a label on it. I guess, I simply need to know that I can start a fire this way too. It’s a great, satisfactory feeling of accomplishment. I’m not naive, though. I know things can go wrong with the rod, for whatever reason. So I have backup safety matches and a lighter on each occasion, just to make sure I don’t hurt myself with unnecessary arrogance (that is, by bringing only the rod).

Why don't these bushcraft guys just carry a disposable lighter?Is it a macho thing to start the fire by Ferrell rod ?
