How to Throw, Trim and Glaze a Cylindrical Bud Vase - Narrated Version
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 гру 2020
- This weeks video demonstrates how I throw, trim and glaze my medium sized simple, cylindrical bud vases. These are straightforward to make apart from the folding over of the rim. As always, I hope you like it and thanks for watching and if you're got any further questions please leave it down in the comments and I'll do my best to reply.

The amount of time you put into not only making these beautiful pots, but also the videos and explaining everything to us in such great detail, with such good tips, makes these videos so wonderful to watch.
I envy those you teach, which I genuinely hope you do.
Thank you so much Cindel, that all really means so much. Luckily for you I don't teach anyone at the moment, so these online videos and my posts elsewhere are all there is. Appreciate you taking the time to watch.
These videos are so precious atm since I can’t get to any ceramics classes. Thank you Florian!
That's wonderful to hear, I hope you're able to get back to your classes soon. Thanks for taking the time watch, it really means a lot.
I have to agree.
How did it get green?
The finished product looks so satisfying to hold. That glaze 😍
They're very glassy objects and are so smooth. I'm glad you like them! Thanks for watching.
High-quality videos, No annoying music, and straight to the point. You deserve a subscribe!
So pleased to hear you like the video, thanks for following along!
These videos are so calming and informative excited for the video on tap centering
Thank you, so glad to hear that. Yes! Tap centring, I'll start editing it together this week.
That glaze is so so so pretty!
It's got so much depth, which is what I like about it. Pleased you like it too!
It thrills me so much to see you wedge your clay the same way I do and you keep your wedged clay in a little cone shape. I made some jars, but did the lids just a bit different than your lids. They are in the kiln right now. Wish I had a gas kiln.
Thanks for watching Carolyn, the little cone shapes important I think, makes for slightly easier centring when thrown onto the wheel, even if it only saves literally a second or so. Good luck with the firing!
I just adore this piece, my fav
This guy deserves a lot more likes and subs!
You put a lot of work in your videos and I enjoy watching and learning from them.
Admire the clean simple lines of this vase very much. It's my new habit to watch the narrated and non-narrated versions back-to-back. Great work!
Absolutely beautiful as always
Cheers Matt!
Every aspect of this object is wonderful! Size, proportions, cove details, beveled bottom, colour! Beautiful!
Informative, relaxing and just beautiful to watch, thanks for sharing.
Thank you Ireen, thanks for watching!
Thanks! Nice vase!
I miss going to the pottery lab. The hours at my lab have been limited lately. Your videos are so well made
You're too kind. Hopefully you'll be back there soon once this is all over.
Beautiful. Just beautiful.
Love your content! Consistently high quality, just like your pottery!
Ah cheers Austin, that really means a lot.
Great tip about the glaze! 🙌 thankyou
Love the style on these!
Cheers Samuel, it's difficult trying to come up with a flower vase design that isn't just a typical round bellied, thinly thrown neck sort of form, so this is my attempt at something different. Thanks for watching!
Your videos are very therapeutic. Thanks you for the content and inspiration.
Thanks so much Brandon, appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Thanks a lot for sharing your ways and tips, it's beautiful to watch and really helpful :)
So pleased you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching.
Your work as well as your voice are mesmerizing!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!!
Too kind, thank you so much Bethany, I'm glad you like my voice, I'm still definitely getting used to hearing it played back so much.
I agree 😊
sooo beautiful
Another wonderful video - thank you :)
I have no intrest in making anything from clay but these objects are beautiful. I think I'm watching more so because they calm me for some reason. AMAZING WORK!
Love the vid!
Thank you!
Me encantan 😍
ahhh finally i found another nice ceramic youtuber 😭😭💖💞
Recently found you on Instagram and really love watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your process so thoughtfully. You may have already shown this in a different video, but I am wondering if you attached something to the bottom of the piece before dipping it in the glaze? I dislike using those big clumsy tongs so my eyes widened when you seemingly dipped it by magic. Thank you!
Thank you so much! Glad to have you onboard here too. I'm afraid not, no magic or anything. I just put my finger in the hole and push it underneath. I only ever do this with these forms as the interior is already glazed and the base is covered in a layer of wax so thankfully the glaze isn't absorbed there. You can glaze without using tongs but I'd say in the long run it's worth it as it's not only faster but it's easier to get a uniform clean surface too. They are definitely awkward to use but after a bit of practice it'll start to feel normal. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for taking out time to post these videos. They are not only educational but motivating too. Trying to adopt your ways of working. So organised so methodical…Also would like to know the height of these vases
Florian, your beautiful work inspires me so much - watching your videos has really helped me through this odd time. Do you have any advice on how to begin learning pottery? I took a class in high school that I loved, but it was cut short because of the pandemic. Thank you so much for sharing your process and knowledge with us! :)
What a kind comment, thank you Luna. Well, there's many things you can do but of course COVID has made things more difficult. Finding some evening classes, offering help to a local potter in exchange for some tuition can work too. Apprenticeships are wonderful but of course. they can be difficult to find. Or simply purchasing a wheel to use at home, attending masterclasses and just practicing a ton. There are some wonderful pottery courses in the UK and Ireland, (DCCoI Ceramics Skills course and Clay College), but outside of the UK my knowledge is relatively limited I'm afraid. Good luck finding something, and thanks so much for following along and watching my videos.
Your videos are so high quality, just like your pots :D I've wanted to get back into ceramics (I took it in school when I was a kid) but unfortunately there are no classes right now. So I'll just keep watching you and hopefully I'll absorb some technique that way ^-^
Cheers Andrew! Hopefully classes will begin again for you soon, it's a tricky time for it I imagine. Good luck! And thanks for watching.
Здравствуйте. Замечательное видео, смотрю с удовольствием. Учусь некоторым приёмам у Вас)) Скажите пожалуйста а чем вы покрываете дно после утильного обжига? Что это белое на кисти?
The glaze was speechless 👏🏽
Amazing! Thank you. If you don’t mind me asking, what camera are you using to film your videos? Thanks.
Hey Paul! At the moment I'm using a Canon 5d mk iv for all my filming and photography, with an assortment of prime lenses, mainly a 50mm/100mm. It was huge upgrade from my previous camera and one I've had my eyes set on forever. Now if only I wasn't constantly getting it covered in clay...
Thank you for sharing, I appreciate every detail of the path as much as the finished piece. And I love your glazes. I have not learned to make glazes my self yet, and when looking for already mixed to buy, I cant find any like yours. Do you or any fellow followers of yours know if something like your kind of glazes can be bought, and if so who makes them?
Hey Kajsa! Thanks for taking your time to watch. Those I use I mix in-house from sacks of raw materials and generally they work best in a reduction fired atmosphere, which isn't so beginner friendly. If you search for snow flake crackle glazes you'll find recipes that might work for you, but I don't think you can purchase them from anywhere.
@@floriangadsby Thank you so much for responding! And that will for sure take "a moment" to get to experiment and learn in the direction of snow flake crackle. Until then I will look for glazes in your color scheme, they appeal to the Scandinavian in me. Warm best
Dear Florian I am again amazed at your skill and talent. Do you think you could make a more "at home" clay video? With things people can buy and try to diy? Just wondering. Great work! Much love!
Hey Em! Thank you very much, both for the comment and for taking the time to watch. Well, I could, but truthfully I don't find myself doing anything that's doable at home so to speak. I generally only use the potter's wheel rather than hand-building or making pinch pots, so making a video like that might be a little out of my comfort zone, and also, I wouldn't be particularly good at it either 😬. I hope that's understandable! I may very well do some hand building in the future but my work is mostly production pottery centric these days.
@@floriangadsby Thank you for responding. Understandable.
I love your work and I'm grateful that you are sharing your process. It's helpful and inspiring. Do you make your own glazes?
Thanks very much Angelica! And yes, I mix all my own glazes in house from raw materials.
@@floriangadsby Are they your own recipes? I just love the colors!
Hi Florian! I am new to throwing on the metal wheel without a bat. How do you go about initially getting the clay to stick without sliding everywhere ???
Thank you for sharing your work! It's very beautiful.
I wonder what kind of clay you use? It's so red!
Goodbye from France ;)
Thank you so much Chloé! It's a high iron content stoneware clay body.
So incredible! Need an apprentice?! :)
One day!
If you had the wedging machine is it still necessary to come your clay on the wheel?
What a wonderful piece
I just want to know something, is glazing plates or cups and use it for food safe ?
Or glaze is harmful to health ?
Thanks! They aren't harmful, the materials used int he glaze and clay are all really quite inert. The crackles do stain overtime but there's nothing dangerous about that unless you're firing at lower temperatures and are using certain toxic materials. This is an interesting link to read over, ceramicartsnetwork.org/ceramics-monthly/ceramic-glaze-recipes/glaze-chemistry/techno-file-dirty-dishes/
Glazing makes the pottery a lot less porous and therefore more hygienic. Of course, you don’t want to use anything toxic (such as lead) for glazes that are going to come into contact with food.
Where do you get your clay, do you buy it or dig it up, and do u clean it after you get it?
What specific type of glaze do you use?
Hey I’m just wondering what you use this jar for cuz where I’m from I’ve never seen this sort of a jar
It's for flowers or dried stems, foliage, that sort of thing. It's a flower vase essentially, just with a slightly unorthodox appearance.
@@floriangadsby oh ok thank you for replying btw I’m looking into studying pottery myself. Learning a lot through your videos you’re great. Keep it up.
Thank you
can you show formulas glaze
are these bisque fired?
They are indeed, I think I mention it in the narration that that's the only bit I forgot to film!
how does the customer drain all the water?
Shake the water out, it isn't too difficult, 95% of it will flow out and the rest can be forced out. The last few drops, if any, will evaporate eventually I suppose.
Hello
Hi!
You often talk about the issues that rise from bad practice like poor wedging. could you do a video where you show varies examples of poor practice and the show those issues like show us what the air pockets do etc
