The Amish always put a mistake in their projects. You’re doing a very advanced knitting project! I’ve been knitting since I was 10 (61) years and I do stranded knitting but only mittens and or socks! I’m not Amish but they believe only God is perfect! The sweater is gorgeous!

It is also an Irish tradition I’ve learned, to put a mistake in your knitting or crochet work…because you put your heart and soul into the work and that is how your soul can escape after you finished it.

Hi Elise, I have to tell you your video today was an absolute joy! I am so proud of you for finishing your sweater. That is definitely one of my bucket list items too and I am going to look up the class you took. I was really "feeling" your determination to finish the goal you set for yourself. This spring I tackled my first pair of Selbu mittens. I also fortunately or unfortunately selected the hardest pattern I have ever seen to challenge myself. It took me four grueling months of frogging and refrogging to finally feel the elation of completing the project...only to discover that I had made the rookie mistake of making two left mittens. Argggh!!! :). After the eye twitch finally calmed down I set sail again and after another month finally completed the project. It was one of my best knitting learning experiences.
With regards to mistakes I read something once I thought put it nicely, it told the story about some Native American rug makers who leave one mistake in every rug they make to give credit to the fact that only the Great Spirit is perfect. I thought that was a beautiful idea. So I tried to adapt that philosophy as I go along in my projects and I leave in a mistake or two as long as it doesn't compromise the vision I had imagined for the piece. Knitting and crocheting became fun once again and I felt an inner peacefulness with my projects. You can almost tell when you pick up a project whether its your own or someone else's, if the energy they put into it was peaceful or frenetic.
But all good things can be taken too far. I have seen a lot of videos lately and have known people who try to excuse away the fact that they need to learn a few more skills. Its been my experience that crocheting and knitting is all about the practice, and that never stops no matter how many projects you make or years you work at it.
I used to teach crochet classes at my home for many years. I could tell almost immediately who was going to stick with it. It was simple, but hands down every time. The person who succeeded was the student who would go home and happily crocheted their wonky crooked granny squares, and who were then willing to frog one out during the next class and be shown how to more evenly turn the corner. Only about a quarter of the students ever got that far. The budding realization that crocheting was harder than they thought and the need they had to have someone looking over their shoulder to tell them they were doing a good job tripped so many people up. As soon as they got home they were afraid to practice for fear they would do it wrong and it would be a waste of time. No matter how fun I tried to make it or how much I encouraged them along the way the fear in the air during that first class was palpable. It made me so sad to see how afraid so many dear women young and old were of making a simple mistake. I would try and compare learning to crochet to playing the piano. You practice and practice and everything is discordant at first, it all just seems like separate notes and chords, until one day like magic you find that you playing and enjoying the music! Its all about embracing our mistakes and knowing that they are not a reflection of our inner artist. That artist is released when we have the skills to reflect our personal vision. And your sweater is truly a work of art. And it really inspires me to continue learning and gaining more skills!

    • @EliseRoseCrochet
      @EliseRoseCrochet  5 місяців тому

Thank you soooo much for sharing your wisdom! And I can totally imagine that eye twitch when you realized you had made two left mittens!!! Oh my goodness! 🤪 Your comparison to learning piano is particularly is particularly relevant because my daughter has a masters degree in piano pedagogy and has taught lessons for years! Such a good observation!🎹

As I said in my previous too long post, I don’t even try to knit anymore and don’t crochet…would maybe give a shot to making some simple critters. But I came across a beautifully hand-crocheted little girl mouse a few months back at the thrift store for just a few bucks. I thought of selling her in my small vintage & collectibles booth, but then I just couldn’t part with her. So she’s sitting on my shelf where I can admire her in her red polka dot smock dress and white ruffled panties. Sometimes we do “rescue” things from thrift stores bc if no one buys them, they may end up in the landfill. 😮 I didn’t want to risk that for this because someone lovingly and beautifully crocheted this sweet mouse girl and she deserves a new home where she can be loved and admired. ❤

Your Kofte turned out beautiful! I love the warm, rich colors. Yes, mistakes in knitting are more frustrating to fix. I started a scandinavian sweater with steeks about 2 years ago, found that I was using the wrong size needles, ripped out the whole thing (8 inches worth) re-started it and put the project in the closet for a year and a half. I so love seeing your kitties! We lost our almost a year ago, and I miss her - even though she chose my husband ! She actually was our daughter's, but when she left for college, Piper became ours. My husband was never a cat person, but when our daughter left, Piper made it her mission to convert my husband - and she succeeded. Piper loved to help me crochet ( under the project on my lap), but if I wasn't crocheting, she was on the couch next to my husband. Never had a leash kitty. They were indoor/outdoor but not on leashes.
I'm my mother's daughter! If there's a storm, I gotta watch it! I love watching weather. My husband says go to the basement or the safe place, so he and the kids would hunker down, and I'd watch for tornados. Luckily, we've never had major damage (God takes care of crazy folks like me!). We get limbs down, roof damage, etc. It's just fascinating for me ( just like my Mom.
If you can't see it from a galloping horse, it's close enough. If I think I need to fix something I make it worth my while. I'll work up a bigger section, lay it out where I know it's in plain site, leave fir a few days, then go back and walk by. If I notice it, I frog it and fix it. If I look for it and it takes more than 30 seconds to find it, I leave it. If I see it right off the bat, then it's worth frogging to fix.
I wonder if a running stitch would have pulled less than the whip stitch that it looked like you were doing? Not that it matters now but with a running stitch you can stitch, then pull the fabric to make sure it isn't puckering. I tend to have the same issues with a whip stitch.
I'm glad you took your time. "Always be ready to modify your plan". I have so many projects that are "done" except for the finishing touches. I have 24 crochet blocks for an afghan done. But I have to block them, connect them and put on the edging! I have a crewel embroidery picture I need to block and frame. And I have I think 4 or 5 counted cross stitch pictures I need to stretch and frame. I think my goal for this year is to finish what is done and to do (complete) what I've started! Wish me luck !!❤❤❤❤

Has anyone taught you how to add a lifeline? There are regular ones that you put through the stitches on your needles but there are also afterthought lifelines that you can put in several rows down. This allows you to take out your needles and safely rip back to the mistake so you can fix it. It’s way easier than trying to tink back for every little mistake and really takes the pressure off.

That is key is to find what schedule and system works best for you and your life style for knitting and crochet projects. For some to finish and complete results would be to set aside 2 hours daily and schedule in [their day or two off per week or bi-weekly schedule]. Others either increase their hours daily OR instead of hours , set goals in your work such as finishing 20 rows a day or 50 rows a day. So it really comes down to finding what type of system or schedule works best for you and your life style that reduces stress while at the same time ensures you complete every project in a timely way without burning out. It is always good to take the time to find out the estimated time it takes to finish the project before starting it to. That way you could avoid all kinds of trouble. Cheers!

Gorgeous job! i’ve been knitting for almost 15 years now and still haven’t finished a sweater. in fact never actually started one! I’m so paralyzed by the thought of it not fitting, and now that i live in a warmer climate area i don’t feel the pull to get stuff done as quickly either so i’m afraid it would linger… Really hoping to find a new LYS or knit group close to home and have some inspiration again! My area’s yarn shop closed and going into CLT is a chore! Living vicariously thru your videos helps for sure! What a labour of love, and such special finishing touches too!

Oh my God, you are so funny my husband was in the Air Force. We moved to Germany and I learned to Continental. They had magazines in Germany on knitting, which I had never seen. I worked for a lady that owned a Christmas craft shop a.k.a. everything you would do for stitching I bought the most expensive yarn you could find. I was almost 30 in crocheting since I was nine but not knitting. So this was a great time in my life. I knit my first Strikking and I was in love with this type of knitting we had to translate when I needed help. I walked up the street to one of the ladies, who was a netter. My babysitter, and I were learning to knit at the same time I was just fine with it until I got to the steeking. I finally put cardboard inside my sweater before I cut it because I was convinced I was going to cut through the back of the sweater.

Wow what a coincidence. My friends and I started with Patricia’s classes too, in 2021. I made the cowl and the selbugenser. I was getting so behind some of the class members who were rushing through five sweaters when I was making one. But I’ve learned so much. I have all the kofte patterns, and I will make one next. Yours came out great. I set a deadline finally so I could enter my project in a local fair. I won best in show! You should try entering yours in a fair. Ha ha the weaving in ends took a long time!

You did a great job with the ribbons. I steeked the armholes on my genser but I haven’t done a kofte yet so I haven’t done the ribbons. The steeked armholes have the knitted facings on the sleeves. The genser is a different style than the kofte you did with shoulders in the round. Mine has drop shoulders.

I feel your frustration with your cardigan. I usually turn out crocheting a garment for myselfabout three times to get it to fit or work right. Let me share something something I learned about Amish quilts that I tell myself and have told my art students:
The Amish deliberately make a "mistake" when making those gorgeous quilts because to strive to make something "perfect" is an afront to god."
I keep this thought to relax the perfectionist me and not freaking out. Perfectionism, btw, is common in professional artists. I was an illustrator/graphic designer before becoming a teacher.
