We put so much pressure and stress on ourselves for something that brings us joy. I don’t sell my projects nor is this my business but just my joy that I share with my family & friends. As I have aged I learned how to say “no”guilt free. I crotchet, knit, sew what I want and somehow feel so much better about my finishing projects.

yea I am finishing two more projects and then I am seriously gonna cut back on request work and do more 'what i wanna make' projects where there is no deadline. I really wanna finish a sweater and a blanket that has been on the backburner and I also wanna have more time for other things, like reading a book, sewing something, or playing a videogame.

I agree. I make what I want and if family wants them they can have them, I rarely take special requests.

I like to have two projects at a time: one that is complicated like amigurumi and one that’s simple like a cardigan or a blanket. Sometimes I need a project that I don’t have think about, especially in the evenings when my brain is spent for the day. 😂

This was such a good video. After a long health battle in 2020-2021 I went to physical therapy to get my strength back. They showed me the way I had been going about things, getting up and doing chores until I was ready to drop and then sitting the rest of the day was the worst. They had me alternate moving and sitting and crafting, never more than an hour for sitting and it made a huge difference in my back problems. Now that I am well I stick to it. I actually crochet/quilt about 4-6 hours a day and am fine, just never more than one hour at a time.

Yes! The way I "remember" is I usually watch a series on TV at the same time and get up and do something in between episodes (usually 40-45 minutes each). It's especially important this time of year for me as I live in Northern Canada and we get reallllly cold weather (currently -32C, -42 with the windchill) so we become a lot more sedentary than in the summer months to our detriment.
My physiotherapist said the same, move in short bursts to give my shoulder and back a rest, both moving too long and sitting too long are bad for my pain, but shorter amounts of each in rotation have allowed me to not rely my pain meds as often to get through the day.

I crochet for enjoyment and I am not interested in crocheting faster. I also developed fibromyalgia about 12 years ago and so trying to do anything faster is not a good idea for me. Otherwise, I will be down and out and not get anything done. I too have a "my chair" and I keep my bible and my crocheting next to it and I have a small table on one side to set my laptop on so if I am crocheting something from a video, I can have access to that video easily. I also do one project at a time. I used to stop and start them and then ended up with a bunch of WIPs that I never finished. I also noticed that when I stop and start projects, I forget what I was doing and have to re-read the pattern etc.and it wastes a lot of time. When I stick to one thing, I get really good at what I am doing and can actually go faster without trying. My goal for this year is to finish the 3 WIPs I have started before moving on to other things. I am working on a hexi granny for my van, a mini granny blanket for our guest room and a mitten. I made one and never made the other one. Duh!!! Then I have plans for them making tons of snowflakes for gifts this year and a snowflake afghan maybe and lots of winter hats for gifts this Christmas as well. Being unwell has really taught me how to focus in order to get anything done. I do this with all things, not just crocheting and I actually think I get more accomplished now than when I was well because I flitted around too much before and didn't always focus.

Great video, Elise! I’m not starting new projects in 2024 unless it’s with yarn I already have - and I stocked up on a lot of them, including your two cute little bunnies that I can’t wait to make. I’m one of those who loves having several projects going for variety, and now I need to stick with them and finish them. I enjoy the process with each one; and reminding myself what stitch I’m doing with what size hook. Thanks for sharing your crafting space and all that eye candy!

    Dear Elise,
Thank you for sharing…your kitties Mr Pickle and Miss Olive are too cute!
I love this…I wish I could learn to crochet faster but it doesn’t seem to work for me, but I’ve learnt everyone has there own pace of doing things and I will eventually get my projects done! I sure do procrastinate if I don’t have deadlines I’ve realised 😆 After doing the 2023 temperature snakes 🐍 last year I unfortunately only managed to complete two out of the three I was making and now I still need to finish my last one (which shows all the chocolate/lollies I ate during 2023, but without a deadline I’m procrastinating but I’m also exhausted since I only started working on all three in November 2023 🙀)! So gotta eat the frog or swallow the toad 😝 whichever gets my work done!
I also in November tried crocheting on my way to work on a few occasions (whilst on public transport) it helped some, but I think it’s hard as I need to take an extra bag for my crochet things and it’s too much to carry as I get shoulder and lower back pain too.
I definitely need to get back into my routine of going for my evening walk but as we are having a heatwave in Australia 🇦🇺 this weekend and early next week it is difficult getting motivated to walk outside. So I’ll try to do that yoga it might help me and my lower back.
I think I must of missed one of your videos...what ducks 🦆?
I’m sure your house would smell lovely with the fresh blueland chemical free products.
I too have a favourite spot on my lounge chair with everything I need on the other seats either side of me, what would make it better if I could recline and put my feet up 😉
    Apologies for the long message.
Take care and stay safe and well.Gods blessings to you and your family 🙏🏼🧶💗😻🦋🐶🍫

I generally have 2 - 3 projects on the go. 1 big, 1 easy & 1 focused. I find then I can focus on the easier projects, when I don't have a lot of time, and then use my day's off for the project that requires more attention to detail. Though atm I have 2 big (but these get rotated, as they are scrappy projects, and I need to re-build my supply of scraps), 2 easy and 1 focused based.

I am feeling your pain. I have chronic back pain L3-5 and sciatica also. When I was driving to and from Florida to NY and back in 2021, I had such increased pain, I had to find a solution. The site I went to is the Cushion Lab and bought myself the seat cushion where the back is notched out and lessens the pressure on your spine. It is seriously the best thing I have done for my back and will not go anywhere without it. It also has a back part (sold separately) that goes with it.

I usually have one project that I don't have to think too hard about (a blanket maybe), an amigurumi project that takes a lot of attention, another project that I'm stuck on and ruminating about what to do next, and one more that I'm still in the planning and gathering stage. I question the idea of crocheting fast and getting project done quickly. Unless it is comission, there is no reason to. I tend to rush trough, so I can move on to next project. But I try to strive away from that as it can lead to burning out. Also, I feel like I am not appreciating the projects as much as I do. I really want to take the time, be more mindfull and enjoy the process. If I feel the need to rush because I am bored or near the end, I conciously stop myself and let the project rest for a while.

Správne je lepšie dokončiť svoj rozrobený projekt ako začínať druhý. Ja som nervózna, keď nemám niečo dokončené a začínam druhé. Preto najprv dokončím jedno a potom začnem druhé. A rýchle háčkovanie je somarina. Háčkujem pre radosť a nie o preteky.

Hi Elise !! How are you ? PLEASE TRY THIS FOR YOUR PAIN ON YOUR HANDS, always put a pillow on your lap to help and support the weight of your project , like those breastfeed pillows, they are amazing . They support your work and your elbows and it helps me 100% with my pain.. About not finishing what I started : if I don’t finish whatever, and then go back to it, I may as well take everything apart..because my tension of my work ,is never the same..it starts to get wide or too small … I’m loving your videos !! Hi Elise, we are so similar when it comes to our productivity and distractions. I tried in 2023 to make more than 1 thing at a time, but all it did was frustrate me when it felt like things were suddenly backing up and not getting finished. Because of that I have 4 afghans I now have to finish in 2024. And I need to get back to my morning routine of first thing in the morning when it's still quiet spending time crocheting. I already have my goals set up for 2024, including several challenges on UA-cam to help me shop my stash and get things done. Just a suggestion for walking in winter - One thing I love to do is get all bundled up and go to a park. Then, while at first I won't really want to start walking, I force myself to, and as I go, I start warming up. So when I start, I'm all bundled up, hunkering down in my layers of clothes, and by the end, my coat's unzipped, if I had gloves, I've taken them off, heck, I might even take the coat off if I'm wearing long sleeves underneath!
I'm glad you've got the yoga stuff. Sciatica pain is horrible. (Yep, dealt with that myself.) In my case, I think what contributed to it was how weak my lower back muscles had gotten over time. There were a bunch of different factors that led to that, but the main point was it got to the point where I couldn't stand for more than a few minutes before those muscles would seize up, and I'd get that radiating pain that started at my lower back and went through my butt and down the backs of my thighs. Luckily, I'm at a better place now as far as all that, but if you can find some specific exercises to strengthen your lower back, those will be a huge help, too.
    Omg. I want that calendar.

I'm tackling 1 project at a time per craft, especially knitting. Since I've only been knitting for 3 years, I find it difficult to move around project to project. Not a big problem for crochet, but I would use crochet to procrastinate my knitting projects. Currently knitting my hubby a fingering weight sweater and not so bad. The texture pattern is an easy to memorize repeat and the instructions are easy to understand. Afterwards, I'll move to my chunky weight sweater project.

Great video! I’m finally getting the chance to catch up on months worth of your videos! 2023 was a crazy year for us and I’m very excited about 2024! Setting some goals and hoping to complete lots of projects!! I’ll be knitting while I watch! 🥰

I totally agree with you that focusing on just going faster can lead to pain, but I think it really depends on what you're doing to crochet faster. The TLYC video you scrolled past has tips I think you'd actually agree with - have good posture, adjust how you're holding your yarn and project so that you're comfortable, use a hook that is easy for you to use, don't let your yarn roll all over the place because chasing it takes time away from working, be thoughtful about what stitch pattern you choose if speed is your goal, stuff like that.

I think your tip about doing a bit every morning would solve the "how to crochet faster" problem for most people. If they don't procrastinate as much, they won't have to rush.
For the past few days, I took some portable projects with me on the way to work. My bus can be quick, either 20 mins or 40min if off peak and even doing a couple rows at a time added up over that sort time.

Thanks for sharing! I wish I could crochet in the car but I get terrible motion sickness! 🤢🤢🤢

I recently had some hand made items in a market and the sales disappointed me and I decided no more. I now knit, machine knit and crochet every day, as well as sewing and it’s all for me and a few gifts for family. I have spent 2024 so far, planning clothing for me as I hate store bought, but I have a huge stash of hats, scarves and cowls, most crochet, and I love it💕

    Hi Elise
This was such a perfect video! I can relate to you so much and I now feel inspired to just eat the frog! 😆🐸 Thank you! ❤️🧶

I heard about “eating the frog” from Minimal Mom’s channel. It does make a day better to get those not so fun tasks done in the morning. I think if I had multiple projects going I’d loose enthusiasm and have a hard time turning my focus back to an already started project. I recently started sitting on the sofa in the living room and I’ve been comfortable crocheting there which for me is something because I generally have had aches and pains in other seating in the house.
