In the anime, at least. It was released originally as a purchase bonus for buying the Japanese versions of what we in America know as "The Sacred Cards" back in July of 2002. As stated elsewhere in the chat, the first true Fusion Monster with that distinction was Rare Fish, released in 1999. However, Dragon Master Knight does have the distinction of requiring a Fusion Monster and a Ritual Monster, which at the time, were the two only alternate summoning types in the game.

You can't just do Dark Magician and not do Blue-Eyes next, they also have plenty of... questionable, support. Also pretty sure Rare Fish is the first fusion that requires another fusion as material, that thing came out in OCG vol. 3 way back in 1999.
Charmiskit you know that’s just a meme card right? It’s meant to create a scenario where you’d say “did you just summon a bunch of monsters in one turn?”
I feel like magic formula is best when you put it on Dark magician, then immediately fuse him. So you get a fusion monster and 1000 life points. I’m not saying it’s better than it actually is, but it’s just something I thought of.
Just a 1000 lifepoint boost card if used that way. And one that's usage is very circumstantial. Plenty of cards that give far more life points easily whilst also providing other beneficial effects like that trap card that negates a attack and heals you matching the assailants atk.
@@Chris-jw8vm draining shield, but battle traps are garbage due to the fact that Spell Trap removal is an extremely common thing. Might work at a locals or if your opponent is having a bad day, that's it though. It's why the only traps that you really run are either Archetypal, Hand Activated, or stall cards like Threatening Roar.
Dark Sage would be really a great card as a fusion monster. You could retrain it to be Sage of Darkness as a fusion monster, with Dark Magician and Time Wizard as materials, then nerf its affect to only be able to search out certain spell cards. Example This cards name is treated as Dark Magician while on the field. When this card is fusion summoned add one spell card from your deck or gy to your hand that specifically mentions dark magician in it's text. You give the card the same stats as Dark Sage. So you get a more usable card that fits in its archetype and is the spiritual successor of Dark Sage, but isn't broken by being able to search out any spell card.
Oh, if I remember correctly, in the anime Mirage Knight split itself into Dark Magician and Flame Swordsman after it banished itself. It easily could have done that but Konami were awful when it came to quality of life with these older cards. Shame, could have been a real fun thing to do.
Sorcerer of dark magic is somewhat decent because 1: he can be used with magician of dark illusions and 2: he is a better Jinzo because he targets traps
Just remember once per chain. So if opponent set mirror force and ring of destruction and activates them both in same chain, it's screwed like light and darkness dragon.
As a Dark Magician player, I totally agree with everything you said in this video. Most of these cards have too many cons and drawbacks that makes them not worth it, especially when there are better cards.
Many years ago I ran casual deck that had Sorcerer of Dark Magic and Dark Paladin. One allowed me to negate and destroy spells, the other traps, both were big beat sticks. I also had a fairly high number of counter traps and other defensive cards to protect the one before I could bring out the other, since destruction by battle for one of those cards was unlikely. Magic jammer and seven tools of the bandit were my friends.
I'm surprised that Neos Wiseman finally became a real card. Shame they decided to make it a normal effect monster instead of a fusion monster like in the anime.
@@Redpoppy80 Trap cards are still relevant. As easy as it is to bring nowadays I still wouldn’t confidently run it in a DM deck, since it easily bricks.
Only time traps are relevant, the situation would be you special summon your 2 DM monsters with navigation, then once they hit the field. They going to play a trap first before you can special summon to remove your monsters. Now you can't do what you wanted to do. A actual trap deck will stop you before you do what you want to do. Or you'll play a modern deck that doesn't use traps but maybe a few staples. (Ex impermanence or something like that)
If you want to meme with Defusion Wave Motion you can use it with Exodios to attack number of times to instantly win the duel. Good Luck pulling this off :p Just thought i nention that
It's to differentiate the lore The purple one is yugi's dark magician; mahad Whilst the blue one is the tcg's dark magician; a stage magician that uses real magic in his shows and is related to the endymion cards That's why cards used by yugi reference the purple one whilst tcg only cards have the blue one
Used to have a Dark Magician themed deck in Duel Links.had a copy of knight, quickly replaced it with erradicator warlocks (who in a 4000LP ruling can be devastating) Best thing of that deck was the robe, great Wall monster and could summon a DMag by discarding a spell/trap.
Roy I used to have a spellcaster and dragon mix deck back in high school, then someone took it, eventually I got them back when I saw someone using those cards
Technically Rare Fish is the first fusion monster that uses another fusion monster as material (Fusionist, ironically), but that card was only released in the TCG in 2016 for some really bizarre reason, as opposed to 1999 in OCG. But... Dark Flare Knight did have its moment back in pre-ban list days as a beatstick monster for use with Magical Scientist.
Miracle Restoring was actually attached to the trap Pitch Black Power Stone, which starts with 3 counters and can move 1 to another card. Add in Magical Citadel of Endymion, and you can actually get counters quickly, and can use Miracle Restoring often. I used them in an old deck to get out Sorcerer of Dark Magic, as you can Special Summon it with Dark Magician, Endymion, and Chaos Sorcerer. This was before Synchros took off, so old, but interesting
I ran exodius in my exodia based deck actually went very well when I used a few good spells and traps to stall till I got his attack high enough to take down most monsters never tried to get all 5 pieces of exodia in my hand always got them in my graveyard for necros or exodius
This is very unlikely, but since Dark Magician Girl's effect is based on Dark Magician and Magician of Black Chaos being in the graveyard, provided neither card is limited or banned, that means the highest Attack stat she can get is 5600, but ONLY if both you and your opponent have 3 Dark Magicians and 3 Magicians of Black Chaos in their graveyards. And the chances of that ever happening, is as unlikely as winning the lottery! Meaning if you're not playing a Dark Magician deck, then Dark Magician Girl is basically just a mediocre vanilla beatstick.
I know this wasn't on the list, but Dark Magic Curtain's TCG effect really disappoints me. Since in the anime, it allowed you to summon any Spellcaster type monster, where as the TCG version only lets you summon Dark Magician.
Minus the fact you can just destroy her or MMS with a quick card. Most equips aren't really good because they're really vulnerable. Twin Twisters is one of if not the most played cards nowadays...
Diffusion Wave Motion is a mainstay in deck, but only because my friend, who is the main person I duel against, runs a deck with a lot of "when sent to the graveyard" effects on his monsters. So yes it is very situational, but luckily for me, that situation comes up a lot
Some of this cards could be interesting skills in duel links, specially "Knight's Title" with "Dark Magician Knight", it would be like a twice per duel effect to add these 2 cards outside of your deck while having a face-up Dark Magician on the field
What would happen if you combined Mirage Knight with Imperial Iron Wall? It still wouldn't be very good because that would take so much setup, but at least it wouldn't be half bad either...?
Another great video, one suggestion I have for you is using the older cards as the images - so using SDY Dark Magician instead of CT13 Dark Magician etc. :)
The first one I'm like 90% sure is a Magician Girl card, while it does contain Dark Magician, it's not directly tied to Dark Magician, which is why it doesn't state "DARK Spellcaster-type monster" in it's floating effect. I always use Magic Formula, that's a free 1000 lp if using the eye of Timaeus right after, and depending on the monster can also give 100 ATK boost
Miracle Restoring was intended for use with Pitch-Black Power Stone, but nowadays you could also use Citadel of Endymion. Great breakdowns and reasonings, are you able to make a list of the best DM Cards as well? And if you have the time, Neos Archetype, Stardust, and Warriors in general. Thank you for your consideration, and keep up the great critical analyses!
I remember with Magic Formula I'd run it with Black Pendant and Magical Hats. That combo usually guaranteed I'd deal damage AND heal my Life Points that turn. It was a niche move when I could pull it off but it's one of the times I'd utilise it outside of boosting Dark Magician.
It makes perfect sense that time wizard has synergy with dark magician since the card originally came from Yugi's deck. I like how they made fun of Yugi in The abridged series about how Yugi gave Joey a card for his deck that would allow him to beat him in the finals LOL
About Dark Sage, the biggest issue with it you didn't even mention is that you tribute the Dark Magician ONLY to summon it, meaning Time Wizard stays on the field, in attack position most likely, with it's crap stats... If you are at around 3000LP or lower, then you are quite easily finished off once the turn switches.
I loved Dark Magician and played a Spellcaster deck with it when I played. I’d love to go through and purchase all of the Dark Magician archetype cards for a nostalgia collection
Magic Formula can also be equipped to... Dark Magician The Dragon Knight, Magician Of Chaos, and Magician Of Dark Illusion (because they are treated as "Dark Magician" on the field)
I agree with the list except the sorcerer of dark magic, he is much better than jinzo bc it allows you to use trap while jinzo doesn't. I think mirage knight could be decent if when it banish itself, you summon a dark magician back.
Now I’m not sure of current rulings on this because I have only played casually. But I’ve used a lock combo where I attach a “ring of magnetism” to a spell caster while magician’s valkyria is face up forcing my opponent to rely on spell/trap cards to clear my board. Essentially the ring makes it so you can only attack the card equipped with it with the downside of losing 500Atk and Valkyria requires you to only it over any other spellcasters. So you can’t attack my monster with the ring equipped because it’s a spellcaster but also can’t attack Valkyria because of the effect of ring
@Duel Logs. I love your content, also I run 2 Magician's Valkerie and the lockdown does work. Worst case scenario I use it for Link Summoning or as a tribute for Illusion Magic. Plus she's cute :).
Maybe you could do a top 10 on cards that could be made tons better by slightly changing its effect, barring summon requirements. Such as Dark Flare Knight can bring out Mirage Knight by tribute or if it's destroyed by any card effect.
@@aliastheabnormal Funny thing is that, at the time at least, I thought Magician's Valkyria was a movie exclusive card. Meaning we would never see it in the actual show, outside of the Pyramid of Light movie.
I know I've criticised you before, but I want it to be known that I shouldn't have. I really like your videos and how you not only have good reasons for each entry, you also explain other reasons why it's not good or is good and even compare it to other similar (and usually better) effects. Thank you for all of your videos.
Can you explain to me how a DM deck can't get multiple DMs on the field for a sorcerer of dark magic? I use to run it and I straight up shat out dark magicians and summoned the sorcerer whenever he popped into my hand..
"Protection effects aren't really good" Wat... Man, those were the best back in the day. I don't think I'll ever be playing YGO! again, it's like s different game now
The sad thing is, each individual summoning mechanic could be its own format. It's just that Konami this time around is forcing players to use Links, because Yu-Gi-Oh really isn't as popular as it used to be (so naturally it's short on money), so they had to experiment with Synchros, XYZ, Pendulum, and Lunks. Though, the problem is: who the hell wants to play a glorified game of king-of-the-hill style solitaire? That's what Link summoning is.
Magic Formula works well with the ritual magician of chaos monster since it is pretty easy to summon and if a spell card is activated while on the field magician of chaos can destroy one card on the field. So it makes him an actual viable beat stick and can clear out the backline.
It is also good to remember that a lot of the cards in these videos can be good in casual play. Magic Formula is one of my favourite cards in my Dark Magician deck just for the damage increase and the life gain, in a meta where damage is more important than over the top combos
I remember my favorite deck back in the day was a spellcaster stall/burn deck and one of the combos was Valkirae + a spellcaster equipped with ring of magnetism. It wasn't a good deck, but it was fun.
I was in a tournament with only 2 magicians valkeries on the field, my opponent attacked which I argued that he could not. The judge ruled that with 2 valkeries the opponent would get choice of which one to attack.
As a kid I thought that sorcerer of dark magic could be done as a quick play special summon, with the idea that you could plop him onto the field during your opponent's turn to stall out their traps and also put a big beefy monster on the field. So I ran that thing religiously. It hurt to learn all the actual rules of this game
That would be a cool modern monster effect, like Gaia's solder card to tribute a fusion Gaia, then special summon on the field. But in this case keep the 2 lvl 6 or higher dark spell casters as the restriction, but allow a quick effect to special summon.
Mirage Knight was my favorite card when I watched the anime. Since I love fan made cards, I wanted to make a strong version of him, but I'm not good enough to make a Nice artwork, and the ones I've found so far are bad too. I really want to know If there any way I can get It.
Dark Sage should have just been a fusion with Dark Magician and Time Wizard as materials.
Maybe a retrain is in order. Use Eye of Timeaus, search ( probably with some restriction). I can see it
Thousand Dragon: fusion monster that doesn't require the time wizard's effect. Shown in the anime nearly a dozen times to require the effect.

Pankratops isn’t searchable in a Dark Magician Deck unlike Knight’s Title.
At the very least, Knight doesn’t have to tribute himself.
@@brianaguilar8283 valid points, but after he pops a card, Knight does a whole lotta nothing
Brenneko Kapazioni he’s a beatstick? Being a warrior at least gives him access to good support as well.
@@brianaguilar8283 no don't defend this thing, it's awful even for the time it came out in and even with the searchable spell. You can't play him in either a warrior deck and you really don't want it in a DM deck because again, it doesn't benefit from any of the other DM cards
Alonso Ar I’ll defend it if I fucking want to. And I’m not saying it’s a good card. Just comparing it to another card that OP mentioned.
Black Illusion also says “DM” on the shield, which I’d argue is an even more direct callout than the staff.
another problem with dark magician knight: it's a warrior
Honestly if it also had an effect that said it was also treated as a spellcaster while in the hand/field/deck/graveyard ( i know thats alot but its already a bad card gta give it something lol) it might see some gimmicky success.
Of course it also really needs to be considered "Dark Magician" in the same situation but i think they purposely left that off the card. Then again if that card came out with the recent wave of support it might have had good effects and be able to be cheated onto the field somehow.
Dragon master knight was the first fusion monster that needed a fusion monster as a material.

Also pretty sure Rare Fish is the first fusion that requires another fusion as material, that thing came out in OCG vol. 3 way back in 1999.
@Charmiskit it is a terrible card.
It was designed to be anime moment inducing/memeish/just a casual use, for fun card.
Not Spirit and MAX.
Oh Rare Fish yeah I use that in my Number C73/C101 Turbo deck
Charmiskit you know that’s just a meme card right? It’s meant to create a scenario where you’d say “did you just summon a bunch of monsters in one turn?”
You’re right. Rare Fish is the first fusion monster to require a fusion monster as material.
Yeah, but their support is far better, although there are some cards that are pretty bad, like blue eyes shining dragon.

Man Sorcerer of Dark Magic super nostalgia as my combo card when trap cards were still a thing but yeah i agree summoning conditions were tough.
Magician's defence is great when u put it in a dark magician girl deck
Indeed.
Which others do you run? Chocolate? Apple? Kiwi? Lemon? I just got back into the game and have some of the old movie cards.
Black illusion also says "DM" on the picture
It kinda makes sense as in Japan it's not called DarK Magician but Black Magician
Mirage Knight needs Imperial Iron Wall to always be up and also, you know, be ran.
Unfortunately, PSCT for Mirage Knight makes him a Nomi. See the Yugi's World reprint.
I feel like magic formula is best when you put it on Dark magician, then immediately fuse him. So you get a fusion monster and 1000 life points. I’m not saying it’s better than it actually is, but it’s just something I thought of.
Or you could use dian keto
To be fair, Sorcerer of Dark Magic can allow your traps to function so there's that. Jinzo meanwhile needs a spellcard to let you do that.
"Sorcerer Of Dark Magic" goes well with Secret Village Of The Spellcasters.
Very true
No, jinzo is better traps cannot be even activated
Yôhānān Simeonidis Yeah. But with SoDM, you can still activate Traps, and it negates the Traps you choose to negate. Jinzo negates all of them.

Top 10 best 0 attack and defense card please. You are doing really great work!
I'm surprised that Neos Wiseman finally became a real card. Shame they decided to make it a normal effect monster instead of a fusion monster like in the anime.
Actually, for the Sorcerer of Dark Magic, it's currently a decent card, because they made it easier to special summon DM and DMG these days.
If Trap Cards were relevent it would be "decent", the 3200 body is not good enough for such an inconsistant -2.

Is there any lore that explains why Dark Magician has been becoming increasingly blue in his artwork?
We are still waiting for that card
he's getting bluer and sadder every time he gets bad support cards
It's because Indigo is close to Black. The Sub name of Dark Magician explains this.
It's to differentiate the lore
The purple one is yugi's dark magician; mahad
Whilst the blue one is the tcg's dark magician; a stage magician that uses real magic in his shows and is related to the endymion cards
That's why cards used by yugi reference the purple one whilst tcg only cards have the blue one
@@noahmartinez38 We need more red Dark Magician cards.
Used to have a Dark Magician themed deck in Duel Links.had a copy of knight, quickly replaced it with erradicator warlocks (who in a 4000LP ruling can be devastating)
Best thing of that deck was the robe, great Wall monster and could summon a DMag by discarding a spell/trap.
And he is meta worthy at the time I typed this comment..

I used to have a spellcaster and dragon mix deck back in high school, then someone took it, eventually I got them back when I saw someone using those cards
I've actually played a Dark Sage deck, and have consistently gotten out Dark Sage. I actually successfully called the coin toss 3 times in one duel.
Magicians Valkyria is amazing. I love whenever I get her lock in play. Tag it along with a WMC and you can get an easy OTK.
7:54 Exodius is a level 10 spellcaster that wins you the game if you attack 5 of your opponents monsters with it 🤔

I ran exodius in my exodia based deck actually went very well when I used a few good spells and traps to stall till I got his attack high enough to take down most monsters never tried to get all 5 pieces of exodia in my hand always got them in my graveyard for necros or exodius
They really could’ve made DMG better. That’s the card that needs more support.
It got its own sub archetype called magician girl in 2016 if I'm not mistaken
@@Tomy_Lightning ive played with some of the cards. Doesn’t seem great but I’m also not the best player these days 😅
Eternal soul also allows you to summon dark magician from the hand as well
I know this wasn't on the list, but Dark Magic Curtain's TCG effect really disappoints me.
Since in the anime, it allowed you to summon any Spellcaster type monster, where as the TCG version only lets you summon Dark Magician.
Magicians valkria is pretty good if you equip it with moon mirror shield.
Her being a level 4 light monster gives her ways to be special summoned anyways. So it’s not the worst support
Minus the fact you can just destroy her or MMS with a quick card. Most equips aren't really good because they're really vulnerable. Twin Twisters is one of if not the most played cards nowadays...
I think Dragon Master Knight may've been before Dark Flare Knight, if not in the tcg then in the anime and video games.
Diffusion Wave Motion is a mainstay in deck, but only because my friend, who is the main person I duel against, runs a deck with a lot of "when sent to the graveyard" effects on his monsters. So yes it is very situational, but luckily for me, that situation comes up a lot
I still remember Yugi using that card in the Battle City finals against Kaiba. Such an epic finish!
Just use Honest instead.
Use it with Honest!
Another great video, one suggestion I have for you is using the older cards as the images - so using SDY Dark Magician instead of CT13 Dark Magician etc. :)
Actually no, the first fusion monster that requires another fusion monster was Dragon Master Knight. Nice video man
You forgot Rare Fish.
TFOF Gaming my bad bro i guess that’s the one that I remember most
The first one I'm like 90% sure is a Magician Girl card, while it does contain Dark Magician, it's not directly tied to Dark Magician, which is why it doesn't state "DARK Spellcaster-type monster" in it's floating effect.
I always use Magic Formula, that's a free 1000 lp if using the eye of Timaeus right after, and depending on the monster can also give 100 ATK boost
Do you still use magic formula in your DM deck. Till this day if so how much do you play with?
Did not expect for this. But hey, nice list you've got there 🙂
Miracle Restoring was intended for use with Pitch-Black Power Stone, but nowadays you could also use Citadel of Endymion.

I can’t blame you
Though the MD summon animation really flaunts it
Your videos have actually rekindled my love for the game.
I've used Diffusion Wave Motion to end the game several times.
"Top 10: Arguably best cards at the number 10 spot"

It makes perfect sense that time wizard has synergy with dark magician since the card originally came from Yugi's deck. I like how they made fun of Yugi in The abridged series about how Yugi gave Joey a card for his deck that would allow him to beat him in the finals LOL
Are we going to pretend that Dark Illusion doesn't have "DM" engraved on it lol 😂😂
Honest's effect is actually better than Mirage Knight, Mirage Knight uses original ATK during damage calculation whilst Honest uses current ATK.
Except the attack of the monster was reduced instead of boosted

I agree with the list except the sorcerer of dark magic, he is much better than jinzo bc it allows you to use trap while jinzo doesn't. I think mirage knight could be decent if when it banish itself, you summon a dark magician back.
completly agreed, the cost of summining him is still steep though
Jinzo though you can casually summon as it is a one tribute where as you have to jump through a hassle to get Sorcerer of Dark Magic out.

I'm just proud to have actually summoned Dark Sage.
Maybe you could do a top 10 on cards that could be made tons better by slightly changing its effect, barring summon requirements. Such as Dark Flare Knight can bring out Mirage Knight by tribute or if it's destroyed by any card effect.
Valkyria is considered support. In GX it was used by DMG in a duel against Jaden once.
The first time I saw Magician's Valkyria being used, is in the Pyramid of Light movie.
@@nine_tails137 I know. But back then DMG was just Dark Magician support. I don't believe that their archetypes solidified until GX.

"Protection effects aren't really good"
Wat...
I’m like obsessed w these videos. I like hearing about how the cards are different and how they are the same as in the anime.
Sorcerer of Dark Magic might combo well with a Silent Magician Deck
It's also amazing with fortune ladies. I use that combo in duel links.
I remember my favorite deck back in the day was a spellcaster stall/burn deck and one of the combos was Valkirae + a spellcaster equipped with ring of magnetism. It wasn't a good deck, but it was fun.
Diffusion and Exodius? You should have mentioned that.
I was in a tournament with only 2 magicians valkeries on the field, my opponent attacked which I argued that he could not. The judge ruled that with 2 valkeries the opponent would get choice of which one to attack.
Do you still play magician's Valkyria?
In your deck?
I mean just use gagaga magician for sorcerer of dark magic
As a kid I thought that sorcerer of dark magic could be done as a quick play special summon, with the idea that you could plop him onto the field during your opponent's turn to stall out their traps and also put a big beefy monster on the field. So I ran that thing religiously.
It hurt to learn all the actual rules of this game
That would be a cool modern monster effect, like Gaia's solder card to tribute a fusion Gaia, then special summon on the field. But in this case keep the 2 lvl 6 or higher dark spell casters as the restriction, but allow a quick effect to special summon.
You ever just think about how much better Dark Sage would be if he was an Extra Deck monster that can be summoned off of Eye of Timaeus?
Searching a spell card of your choice by just fusion summoning is broken.
Ban city!!
Brian Aguilar Would that not make it a better card?
pyrotempestwing it would make it broken.
It's balanced out by the fact that it's locked to a bad archetype
Mirage Knight was my favorite card when I watched the anime. Since I love fan made cards, I wanted to make a strong version of him, but I'm not good enough to make a Nice artwork, and the ones I've found so far are bad too. I really want to know If there any way I can get It.
