My wife has been using a down blanket inside her sleeping bag for years and always stayed warm even though she is a cold sleeper. I backpacked in Yellowstone this last year with temps getting into the 20's so I thought I'd try it out and could believe how much warmer I was. It fills up all the cold spots in your bag and I slept so much better. Any time it's below freezing I will always use one now.
That kind of sounds like a liner 🤔 I’ll try that next time inside the bag
I use two Rumpl down blankets for hammock camping in Montana, I use one over the ridgeline, (some people like to use wool blankets for this instead but wool is very heavy), and this adds a lot of warmth without needing to be right on top of me. I will also use one to add extra warmth to my underquilt by just clipping it at the four corners to the inside of my underquilt. So I basically end up with a down-insulated hammock tent.
I swear by mine as an extra layer for cold weather. I lay mine on top of my bag overnight and I do the superhero cape thing too 🤣

Seems great for summer nights, or to turn your sleeping bag from a 3 to 3+ season setup. Probably best inside your bag though
They are most valuable during summer time when you don’t need a full on sleeping bag because it’s not cold, but you want something for comfort

Well, if you have 2 covers rather than just one, you can get more versatility in temperature ranges. If you have a quilt that can give you 10 C deg below just your sleepwear and a bag that gives you 20 deg C, when you combine them together, you get 30 deg C below just your sleepwear. So rather than buying 3 full sleeping bags to cover this range of temps in 10 deg C increments, you buy just 2 items. In summer you take the quilt only, mid-season the bag only & winter both of them. Also, if your quilt converts to a poncho, you have a nice warm comfort item to relax around camp when it's cool. If you put ties etc on the side of your poncho, it can be worn as a double layer tabard, just by adding a belt. This totally frees your arms from any restricted movement though you may want to wear a fleece (or other appropriate) jacket to keep them warm as well. In this configuration, you are basically covered with the same or better insulation as a knee or below knee puffy or down coat. So, we are talking full winter outwear with this, no need to take a dedicated outwear layer as long are you keep everything dry. Basically, it means less total weight to backpack. If your sleepwear by itself can get you to 10C, then one quilt & one bag equips you to prepare for 10 C, 0 C, -10C or -20C minimums.
any plans to try out hammock camping? I've 100% converted my entire setup and never looked back. Granted it's not gonna work in the Owyhees
I absolutely want to try hammock camping. I met a guy in north idaho who does it up there in the winter and he swears by it and he is the real deal. So I do want to give it a try. Hopefully next winter. Any gear tips getting into it?
I wanna get into it too but there’s so much choice out there, and no consensus! The Amok Draumr and the Henessey hammocks looks best. Haven too but only for moto camping or sth like that. People seem to love OneWind stuff for beginners, but tbh I’m just overwhelmed with the choices…

Jon, I've looked in your videos and can't find what you use for food storage. Never seen you with a canister so I assume a bag you hang somewhere. Could you share with us what you use, perhaps a link so you get some $$ when we buy it? Also wanted to let you know that you need to check some of the links for backpacking items, some don't work or the item is out of stock, such as the headlamp. I know this is how you make some $ and want to support you, just wanted to let you know. :-)

I just watch your sleeping bag liner video. What would you say (you as a real backpacker I can trust the human rating) temperature rating addition does this add apposed to a liner? Liners are heavy and this seems like a better lighter warmer option to me.
The fabric is too slippery! It starts off as an over-blanket on top of a sleeping bag and within an hour it has slid off and ends up as a crumpled pile on the floor.
