- When it comes to the perfect sports sedan, #BMW has always been the king of this segment with the 3-series. However, nearly a decade ago, the company decided to introduce an interesting 4-door coupe called the #4SeriesGranCoupe. It was an instant hit for buyers wanting something more unique versus a 3-series sedan. The #M440iGranCoupe pairs the beloved 3.0L turbo I-6 with a 48-volt mild hybrid system to produce near M3 levels of acceleration and represents a near perfect middle ground for enthusiasts trying to decide between a 330i and an M3 sedan.

Happy Labor Day weekend everyone! Hope you all have been able to relax and enjoy some time with friends and family! For those of you who can't decide between a 330i and the M3 sedan, the M440i is the perfect compromise between both and while there was a time where we'd recommend the new electric i4 M50, with the new tax credits in effect, the M440i Gran Coupe now seems to make more sense as long as you're okay with giving up some straight line acceleration and using the older BMW iDrive 7 in the interior. We expect this car to get the new infotainment system for 2023 or 2024.

Why? Do you move your seat slot of the time. Give me the $1k, and for that matter get rid of the phone-key access and all the crap that makes the cost $15k more than it should be. Sorry, car costs are just getting out of hand for a bunch of stuff that makes automobiles start to feel like….well…..not an automobile.
Drove a ‘65 Dodge wagon the other day. So simplistic (gear shift was just a lever, like the old cool-hot levers) yet wonderful all at once.

I was invited to BMW event for the weekend and had a chance to drive - pretty much every modern BMW they have on offer for prolonged time. Anyway I really liked M4 expecting a lot and it did deliver. BUT - M440i really impressed me. While M3 was very powerful - it felt like driving a PlayStation. YOu can feel how much effort BMW engineers included to smooth out the road feel. But M440 felt more like a "real and realistic car" if it makes sense - it really felt quick and lively - more than M4. It comunicates whats going on much better than M4 and therefore gives you a feeling of connection with the road. So funny enough - thinking I would go for M4 - M440i was my final choice.

Have had my M440i Gran Coupe for about 6 months and I like it even more than I thought I would. I originally ordered one in early October 2021, it arrived in late December without the power seats. That was unacceptable and I said I would wait for them to make another. BMW does offer cooled seats as an option, which mine has as well. In my opinion, it looks much better with the shadowline trim. The chrome just accentuates the large grill, the shadowline helps it to blend in and look aggressive, especially in the darker colors. It is a great daily driver, smooth, quiet, and composed. Put it into Sport Plus and I'm not sure what more you need. The sportback design is why I chose this car and there is plenty of room, especially if you put the back seats down. The only caution I would give is if you expect to regularly drive adults in the back seat. It's fine for kids or adults who are 5' 8" or less. However, taller and/or older adults can have a hard time getting in and out. That is very rare for me, usually just me or me and my wife. Great car, very satisfied with it so far.

I’m awaiting delivery for a 2023 model and it is confirmed that it will still have iDrive 7. BMW will likely wait for LCI for iDrive 8.

Glorious exhaust sound!
I was so lucky to get a model with a performance exhaust, adaptive suspension with every one of the technology packages. It's very fustrating how BMW has so many random builds, making it hard to get everything you want. The car is amazing and the exhaust sounds like a cannon. Definitely worth it but you have to get it fully loaded.

Um, yes they do. The 3-Series is the vehicle without cooled seats unless you spring for a full M3. I literally was just about to order an M440i GC with cooled seats on it, but changed my mind and went for an X3 M40i instead. The main reason I was going for an M440i GC over and M340i is that it offers cooled seats (and a few other tech options) that the M340i does not, for some strange reason.
I would just go with the M340i sedan. This is nice but I prefer the traditional 3 series and the update looks great!
i have a strong aversion to the new widescreen digital interface. it may have a slight advantage in usability but i would actually pay extra for the more traditional dashboard. it just looks right to me.
The color reminds me of Honda’s old G87-P (Dark Emerald Pearl). In darker lighting, it looks black, but the green pops nicely in the right light.

No burps on upshift!!?? My m240 m850 and x3 m40 all sound meaner, pops and crackles with major burps at upshift! Looks sweet!

I wanted to first get the m340i but after seeing one I changed my mind. This ticks all the check boxes for it's practicality and unique styling
I like that it isn't blacked out. The satin silver is very nice. Love the color!
The wheels are very stylish. I don't normally comment on wheels, but these look very nice. And the red calipers look good behind them.
I will say that I'm not a huge fan of the door handles. It's a dated look, with the "pull up" type. I had that style on my 1997 Hyundayi...and at some point, the handle broke off. Probably won't happen with this BMW,...but I generally don't like that design [now] because of that.
Dash looks pretty good. Classy.
Just ordered my 2024 in San Remo Green. The "gun metal" front grille, mirrors, exhaust finishers and badging color is called Cerium, and I like the understated contrast between it and the green. The full shadowline black with this color IMO didn't look as good. I drove MGBs when I was growing up, and it is very close to British Racing Green, and they look almost the same when it is cloudy.

When you shoot cargo areas, zoom into block out the brighter surroundings, brightness aperture will show the darker trunk.
For once I have to go with Acura and Lexus design over the current BMW design.
They are nice as well I have the 21 Acura TLX Type-s which I like but I also looked at the Audi S5 sportback but I didn't like the considerable markup on price.
Way better looking than 2 door. I think its the same reason why I prefer the proportions of the M3 to the M4
Really like the new design of 4 series coupe version, but for 4 door vehicle, I will still take audi s5.
I don't get why the 4 series offers ventilated front seats, but the 3 series doesn't get that as an option (that too with certain interior colors like black & mocha brown which are such dark interior colors). Even the X3 offers it, although they only offer it with the black or dark mocha brown leather which almost looks black or like the Caturra Brown Nappa leather Mazda has on the CX-5 Signature trim
So you need to boost the turbo more on launch to get it spinning faster. I have an M440 GC and can attest to the fact that you need to count to three Mississippi before releasing that brake pedal.

This is correct. We have them on this exact car in Tanzanite Blue that was delivered a month ago. My wife insisted on them...live in AZ and she wouldn't let me get a car with them.

It's because the paper lies. BMW almost always under rates the output of their engines.

Dyno runs on the B58 engine on other models have shown this engine produces around 400HP at the wheels translating to about 440HP at the crank. A light stage 1 tune on these engines can bump it up by 30-40HP

@@PapiAndrey and to only give you 1k off is crazy because if you went to bmw to add power seats it's no way 1k would be the price for parts and labor. They should say when the chip is available bmw will swap out your seats for power ones

The 2023 model does have motorized seats and there is an option cooled seats, extr $1K.
The one thing I'm curious about is the trunk door while open, how high does it go? In the review it's not covered.

Sofyan, what is was most enjoyable BMW you have driven?
The color is okay, I've seen it in person and its not really something that catches your eye, even on a sunny day. It's just a dark green, not really that interesting. What's surprisingly caught my eye more so (outside of the frozen colors BMW offers) is the Dravit Grey which to me looked like a typical boring dark grey when I first saw pictures of it online. But in-person it has some really interesting layers to it. It has this undertone of gold metallic flakes to it that subtly show up on a sunny day, it's actually kind of crazy how much different the car looks on a cloudy day vs a sunny day, you'd think it was two different colors. That's likely going to be my color of choice for my next BMW.
That one gives me accord and acura vibes (sarcastic mode🤣🤣) great design!

It's a factory mistake that they made with the first set of production cars. They all come with automatic seats standard besides the press cars.

I’m sorry but If I was a buyer I would never accept a car at this price range without power seats, even with a $1000 credit, that is absolutely unacceptable! I am a bmw owner and got delivery of my X3MC last month and they deleted the hands free tailgate but that’s not as a huge deal as this. BMW needs to stop deleting basic things!
Deleting hands free tailgate is acceptable since it's rarely used anyway. It's not often your hands are so full you can't press a button to open the tailgate. But holy shit no power seats??????? Am I buying a $70K 2022 BMW or a $15K 2002 NIssan?
I think it's 12 cu. ft of space for the actual coupe but for the Gran Coupe it's over 16 cu. ft

In reference to your protecting the M3 badge, you are correct. But, if you have the money, you can buy an Alpina B4 Gran Coupe GT in Germany and have it legally imported to the US (Alpina can arrange it). The B4 has the S58 out of the M3 and M4 and offers similar performance to the M3 or M4 base models yet they also have a Comfort + mode that rides like a cloud and a Sport + that handles better than the standard M440i Gran Coupe.
My favorite sporty sedan from BMW.

I just got a 2023 model and it doe NOT have the iDrive 8, still has 7, same as the 2022. And COOLED seats are offered in the 23, unfortunately my car didn't come with them.
One of the few if not only car that looks better with a front license plate.
To everyone commenting on the grill. It looks far better in black with the shadow line trim. This was how I specced my car and it looks much more similar to the M3/M4

Cooled seats are definitely available for G26 in Germany. Though not sure about the M version

can't believe how many ppl dont lke the new front ends, this look is just so much more timeless than the late 2000's-2010's beamers....i will always prefer the classic 90's styling but this styling is going somewhere imo. the only reason i won't buy a new one of these is they want to sell you a warranty over reliability and engineering philosophy.
Supposedly the B58 is improved now, but known for horrible oil consumption. I would only consider the S58 currently

It's interesting that I see quite many reviewers commenting the G series steering as offering feel. As a G20 owner, I found its steering already offer the most feedback compare to the rest of the class (maybe except the Giulia). Just wondering is it because most reviewers naturally comparing it to old gen 3 series like E46 and conclude as comparatively 'no feel'?

@@dommy114 I owned an Alfa before so I do like certain aspect of them a lot, but just can't deny the material they use for interior is below par, infotainment/connectivity is crap, rear row is cramped with middle seat almost unusable, pile of electrical errors
@@jimmychan9582 having owned Alfa, BMW, Mercedes, and a Jaguar, I absolutely disagree. The infotainment is the most usable of any competitor because it does everything I need from a car without requiring digging through settings on a touchscreen. Back seat space is comparable to the others in the class, but I don't care about that at all. I've had 0 issues with Alfa. Same cannot be said about my BMW or Jaguar. As for the materials they use, MUCH better than the Germans. Germans are plasticky, rattly, and creaky. At least Alfa gives you leather and alcantara on the dash, doors, etc., and nothing creaks (besides the map light plastic surround when you push on it).

How is the trunk more practical and it is only 12 cubic feet? The m340i trunk is 16 cubic feet.

Can someone explain the whole idea behind the 4 series gran coupe model? I never understood it as it looked so close to the 3 series..
There's no profound reasoning. Basic 4-door sedans simply aren't "cool" anymore. People want the practicality of a regular 4-door sedan and cargo space of a small SUV with the styling of a cooler two-door coupe. And you get a 4-door "coupe" with a hatch. People buy them; manufacturers make them. That's all. Look at how successful the Audi A/S/RS7s are, so Audi came out with the smaller A/S/RS5 Sportback, which is a direct competitor to this. This looks pretty good, but I think Audi's A/S/RS 5 and 7 are sleeker imo.
At least these 4-door "coupes" look nicer and make more sense then those hideous 4-door "coupe SUVs" like BMW X4 and X6 and Mercedes GLC and GLE Coupe.

Yes, I am aware that the A7's have owned that space for quite some time, and Kia Stinger coming out with one too.
So, i'm assuming it's just a Coupe SUV as a sedan version, eh?
@@simplyeric12 There is a bit more volume when you factor in the height with the liftback, but the rear seat headroom isn't quite as good as the 3 series and I believe the surface area of the trunk might be a tad smaller as well.
@@simplyeric12 Cargo capacity should be a little bit better than the 3 series sedan, but I don't have the exact numbers. As the other person said, the "gran coupe" sacrifices some rear seat headroom to achieve the sexy coupe profile. The same can be said of the Audi A5 and 7.
It's basically trying to do everything. Traditional 2-door coupes aren't selling, so they added two more doors, a bit more backseat room, and a liftback to make it more practical and easier to swallow.
Instead of telling your spouse/family you are getting a fun coupe, now you can tell them you are getting a practical 4-door family car.
@@edwink1467 Agree completely, the GC makes up 50% of the total 4-series sales with another 25% each going to the Coupe and the Cabrio.
