I'm an American born in the early 60s and I can only speak for my experience in NC. We really loved the Sweet songs. Littly Willy was always played at the skating rink, as you brought up. My good friend was in love with Blitz. My daughter who's 29 loves Oxygen and Wig Wam Bam. I'm totally in love with the Sweet and will always love them. It's a shame Mick never got the recognition he deserved as a drummer. He was phenomenal! My favorite albums are Sweet FA and Give Us a Wink, as I liked the harder rock side of them. I think that was their forte, but I love everything from their bubblegum on up through the last album. With them you get 4 bands in one- bubblegum, glam, hard rock, and "regular" rock.

One of the fortunate ones to see the original Sweet live in 1978. They kicked ass! Playing all the heavy tunes. Windy City was mind blowing. Only played 2 songs off Level Headed. The rest was all the crunchy heavy stuff. One of the greatest concerts I've ever seen just for the fact I got to see the original band LIVE

So glad Grant brought the Queen/Sweet connection. I'm from 73, so I know Queen since ever, but got to know Sweet only in 94. The first thing I noticed was how Sweet's vocal harmonies were similar to Queen's. Then I learned that Sweet did it first. In the last 30 years, bands like Sweet, Badfinger, Raspberries, Big Star have become cult bands. It's like Velvet Underground in the early 80 - though V.U. became everyone's cult band to the point that they could make a tour in the early 90's.

Here in the UK I grew up watching bands like Sweet, Slade & T.Rex on Top Of The Pops. I absolutely loved their hit singles. Their B sides were really heavy & helped get me into hard rock. The shame is these bands aren’t really remembered much even here in their home country. thank you so much for posting. For me the best of the glam rock bands that was essentially a hard rock act Listening to their primitive early single Co-Co and then the self-penned B- Side Done Me Wrong Alright confirmed that the band were rockers at heart. for example, the magnificent Windy City track. The huge change in direction between the album Off The Record and Level Headed was even more pronounced than that between Zep II and III. The reference to David Bowie originated in the fact his single The Jean Genie has the same riff as Blockbuster but came out 6 months earlier. Also of note both The Sweet and Uriah Heep were focused on vocal harmonics long before Queen entered the scene. In terms of their legacy Pete Townsend (The Who) was a big fan and invited The Sweet as 'Special Guests' at their open-air concert at a football ground (Charlton Athletic) in 1975. Unfortunately, Brian Connolly's throat met a fist which meant the band had to withdraw. Given that Sweet Fanny Adams and Desolation Boulevard were out, and their singles were not reaching the higher echelons of the charts at this time, this may have proved pivotal point in the band's fortunes. To be exposed to 50k fans of rock music fans may have influenced the perception people had here in the U.K that the band were a serious rock act and that they were much more than a glam-rock act. I met Brian Connolly a couple of times in the late 80's early 90's and it was obvious that both he and Andy Scott had issues which culminated in Brian's sacking. An attempted reunion never materialised as Brian's health was deteriorating...very sad. At the end of the day your U.S bands like Kiss and Motley Crue etc owe much to The Sweet. Apologies for the long commentary but i would like to ask a question please. When Brian was touring in the late 80's he sang a song that was akin to Zeppelin's Achilles Last Stand and was, by far, the high point of the gig. When i spoke to Brian after he believed that this unrecorded track as going to be his pathway in obtaining a new record deal. This never materialised i and have never heard this track since. Does anyone have more detail and if it is possible to hear this track again somehow?

If you go on the YT videos for Fox and Blitz, you'd be surprised at the number of young folks who say the movies brought them there. As for Brian getting kicked in the throat in the attack, he did recover mostly but didn't have the high range he once had. I think they made a mistake by not getting a new lead singer when BC left. Maybe Dio could have turned them into an 80s metal band who could compete with Def Lep, Crue, etc. Who knows? BC's drinking was way more unfortunate than anything that could have happened to the Sweet. Sad he couldn't turn it around.

When talking about Sweet records, especially the early singles, it's important to note that the B-Sides were usually the band's songs as opposed to Mike Chapman's (Chinn/Chapman). The B-Sides sounded so different and they were the songs that ought to be remembered. The bubble-gum era Chapman songs deserve to be mostly forgotten.

Have loved SWEET since early childhood in the 70s. First with the catchy/charming "Little Willy" single on Bell Records when I was all of 7. Then, the kick ass singles, "Hellraiser," "Ballroom Blitz," "Blockbuster," "Burning," "Rock and Roll Disgrace," "Fox On The Run," etc.
But the cementing, "fan for life" moment came in buying the monster that is "GIVE US A WINK" in 1976. Here lies one of the great underrated heavy rock albums of all time. ⚡
On first listen (in that spirited Bicentennial year), I recall the power, obvious talent and below the belt impact of killer songs like "Yesterday's Rain," "Cockroach," "Keep It In" and the very Queen-like "White Mice"
The hits were fantastic as well (i.e. "Action" and "The Lies In Your Eyes")
And as a 10 year old ROCK adoring, budding musician kid, the epic, side ending track "THE HEALER" really got under my skin as well. Loved, and still love "The Healer"!
Overall, "Give Us A Wink" 😉 truly ROCKS from start to finish, without a dull moment in tow, but full of visceral exciting ones!
SWEET FANNY ADAMS (1974) is another fantastic album. A close #2 for me, actually. DESOLATION BLVD. (UK) is also really good, especially if you replace the sloppier "Fox On The Run" original, with the far superior 1975 single version.
OFF THE RECORD (1977) is another LP worth your time. Might not be as great as "Give Us A Wink," but it's a very fine follow up that satisfies in the same vein.
I also enjoy "LEVEL HEADED" from '78. It's a much more pop oriented affair, but as with all other Sweet efforts of the 70s and early 80s, they prove their eclectic ability to effortlessly perform disparate sub genres with aplomb.
*And within Level Headed, please check out the "full album version" of LOVE IS LIKE OXYGEN. Over 6 minutes long and including a very cool funk-jazz work out as coda!
    Long Live Sweet! 💪
*It's absolutely true that they did not receive the proper respect and attention they deserved, and will not be remembered as the other iconic greats like Zeppelin, KISS, Sabbath, David Bowie, Beatles, AC/DC, The Who, VH, The Stones, etc.
It's a shame. They deserve better. They might not be in that specific upper echelon, but they're definitely worth serious appreciation. People, in general... the ones who even know them, seem to only link Sweet to the obvious glam hits and also their bubblegum roots. As is the case so often with "the masses," they're really missing the boat on this band's sheer talent and diverse abilities with so many styles of music.
But I genuinely don't give a rip what the masses deem worthy anyway.

Sweet will be remembered more in the UK and Europe simply because they had more hits and due to this, received more exposure. I'm sure its a similar situation in the USA , with bands shifting loads of units in the states, yet remaining practically unknown outside of North America.

Great topic! The story of Sweet really is a catalog of a massive opportunities ultimately squandered. From the US/North American perspective the band's 1975 tour as headliners fell flat. They were probably just too ambitious at that stage. Then they failed to tour in the US behind both the Give Us a Wink and Off the Record albums, missing another chance to gain fans, especially metal/hard rockers. They were lined up to share the bill in the US in '77 with Aerosmith - that would have been an amazing double bill. But again, they changed their minds, didn't tour and instead spent a year off the road doing a soft rock/prog album. By the time Love is Like Oxygen came out they were largely forgotten and so it went on...a shame coz they WERE pretty amazing.

Great commentary! I have been a fan of Sweet’s since my early 20’s. I’m 43 now. I’m enjoying a new revival and discovering more of their great music and watching their performances on UA-cam. Watching them perform adds to my experience and understanding of the term “glam rock”. My kids love them too as we listen to music together. My 10 year old’s friend recognized their song “Papa Joe” while it was playing in my car which shocked me. My point is that their music and style can appeal to younger generations and it’s a matter of exposure really. UA-cam reactors are reacting to them and there seems to be a revival in classic rock bands in general right now. So I hope some of these medias can keep great music alive and appreciated.

I think people in the UK and Germany especially are going to remember Sweet for a very long time to come.
Yes they're not that familiar to Americans but that's not the case here and in my experience for what it's worth is that older folks are such fanatics of this band that they tend to share them and their legacy with the younger generations of the family who aren't slow to pick up on Sweet's energy and
    catchiness themselves.
Check out the other youtube videos posting Sweet songs and band member tributes and you can see that people are paying them tributes almost every day sometimes, it's incredible.

Later, when I turned towards the heavier stuff, I despised the chinnychappy singalongliness of those glammy gumbubbles. When they wrote their own songs like on „Off the record“ (where a purplish riff from Tokyo blew through the windy city) I put them into consideration again, but never as a band in the major league of rock.

British Sweet fan here. Firstly I find it an insult that you describe Ballroom Blitz as a novelty record. The fact that it has been covered so many bands disputes that. If you want a novelty I believe Little Willy was a top 5 hit in the USA long before Ballroom Blitz. Also, with the USA being such a huge market I think you will find they get better feedback in some areas than others. I have all the classic line up Sweet albums. Bought them all upon release after hearing the b sides. They kicked butt and were much maligned at the time. The Chinn/Chapman singles were great songs but you had to listen to the B sides and the albums to get to the meat of the band. Their self penned songs were as heavy as you like and Sweet Fanny Adams is an early thrash tune for crying out loud! They were under appreciated at the time but seem to get more recognition nowadays for their contribution. I know Gene Simmons of Kiss is quoted as saying "without Sweet there would be no Kiss" You don’t mention that in your discussion. You can't get a bigger recommendation than that (even though I am no Kiss fan) Just to mention their look, one of the funniest descriptions of their look was that they looked like "hod carriers in drag" Very funny even if very true!! LOL Def Leppard are also big Sweet fans and there are many more as well. In fact The Lep released a cover of Action as a single that did well in the UK and Europe. As for Glam, it is still well remembered in the UK although radio is very choosy about what they play in retro radio stations. Sweet, Slade, T Rex, Bowie glam era, is still regularly played on rock radio here. Glam is not forgotten. Also, in the rest of Europe, Sweet are treated with great respect and reverence. They were huge in Germany and Scandinavia and are still popular when Andy takes the current line up over there. The later heavy albums were heavy and immense. You mention Mick’s heavy drum sound. Did you know that Sweet were the first band to use the studio in Munich where that big drum sound was found. It was after this that Zeppelin went out there and recorded and where Bonham finally honed his huge drum sound. FACT!! Before the Zep fans get on their soapbox. Sweet do have a legacy and in the UK and Europe that they do not have in the USA. As for the Queen thing. Andy Scott still has a chip on his shoulder about that and even recently in an online interview I saw him going on about it. It was a long time ago Andy and you need to move on. The fans know what is what. Queen were a different animal and I still love both bands.

I know there are portions of America that do still like (The) Sweet and I do believe some areas they will be more forgotten than others which was alluded to in the discussion. In the UK and Europe they are still much revered. At least to a point, and while the retro rock stations keep playing their songs they will not be forgotten. Thanks for the reply

@@GrantsRockWarehaus Thank you reply! In your 3-way show up there you guys started talking about bands' longevity related to word of mouth and who's gonna be remembered and why. Popoff, the literary documentarian extraordinaire, was mentioning that after the bands' fans all die off, there's not gonna be a residual effect of staying power without those initial fans around. That was hard to hear. Man, I'd never thought about stuff like that. I always thought all Rock was gonna be brought along into succeding generations because well, You Tube is here now. So I guess you COULD say there's hope. It'd be tragic if the merits and accomplishments of these four awesome people went unheralded but alas, it does appear that's going to be the case at least here in America. I have a female friend in England who was a Sweet maniac when I met her in 2009 when she was 20. She told me she was the only one of her age group who likes them these days, so there even seems to be very little support for them even in their home country where they ruled TOTP for two years. Anyway, Martin really bummed me out with that "If a tree falls in the forest, will anyone remember The Sweet" discussion. Jesus Martin, you got like half of us fastening nooses in our collective closets at home! (just kidding) But yeah, it was amazing listening and watching your Sweet Symposium, Grant. I like your interests and level of knowledge and passion.
Correction - I noticed in 1978 when I was 11, Love Is Like Oxygen most people mistook for Electric Light Orchestra, not Queen. Those background vocals were the same as ELO. It had to have been the same producer. Thing is, Grant, that sound is sadly attributed to ELO and Queen and not The Sweet at all. It's an injustice. Lastly, I adore Steve Priest. I loved what he did with image. Couldn't take my eyes off him.
Know what? Like with Motley Crue, they and The Sweet are like the only two bands where the electric guitarist is the LEAST popular of the four members. Mick Mars and Andy Scott both at the bottom, popularity-wise and they're the main one directing the music.
Oh, and I'm listening again as I'm typing this. You mention T..Rex not being known really. Yep, only one song. Grant, when I jumped onto You Tube for the 1st time in '08, I discovered T.Rex was a whole different thing in England! T. Rextasy is unheard of here Stateside. I was like "Holy shit! Look at all these promos and tv appearances! And a freaking movie too? I'm in! ima watch it all."
And The Sweet discovered on You Tube with all those TOTP and Music Ladens and all. Oh man, what a treasure trove!
And in conclusion - the thing is about all that great T. Rex and Sweet stuff on You Tube, seems like you, me, and a handful of people are the only ones who make it our own. Looks like they will be lost to the passage of time. Gez Grant.

I'll never forget Sweet! I still listen to them on the regular, along with ELO & Cheap Trick. Yeah, sure, I'm in that demographic, but so are a lot of people. Ultimately, you're right. Sweet will not enjoy the enduring love of music fans the same way the Beatles will, or Kiss, or Queen. But I wouldn't completely rule out their popularity being reinvigorated by another band or another media. I think the reason that hasn't happened yet is that the timing has just been a bit off. They had a bit of a resurgence in the UK when I was living there in '86-'87 when there was a 12" mega-remix (sort of Sique Sigue Sputnik-style) of "Ballroom Blitz" that was making the rounds. The right exposure, to a market that's receptive, & you never know...
Jeff Scott Soto is the vocalist you were trying to recall. He sang on the first two Yngwie Malmsteen records, & fronted the BEST incarnation of Boogie Knights, as well as fronting Journey (yeah, Journey!) 2006-2007. Great singer! It is a shame that they really are kind of buried in history, I only have Sweet F.A. through Off the Record but those are all really great albums. Queen, Bowie and Elton were able to get over, but not T. Rex, Mott, Sweet, Cockney Rebel etc, even as hard as some people pushed. They all get one song as compensation and that is it. But that era was amazing, and I would have loved to have been there for it (I was born in '77)

Sweet essentially signed a Faustian pact with Chinn/Chapman. They had loads of hit singles and presumably made decent money by putting their own songs on the b-sides, but this meant that all those great tracks like Burn on the Flame, Need a Lot of Loving and many others were probably played once or twice by the kids (like myself at the time) who bought Wigwam Bam or Blockbuster, instead of making albums like Sweet Fanny Adams or Desolation Boulevard absolute classics rather than might-have-beens as they actually turned out. I mean, an 8-minute drum solo and a cover of My Generation on the latter?
On the other hand, how big could they have got had they stuck to their guns and just gone out as a 70s hard rock band? About the size of bands like UFO and Lizzy, maybe? Highly-regarded to this day by their fans, but never really huge sellers. Sweet probably ended up with much more money than they would have done had they not hooked up with Chinn/Chapman. And despite the fact that they did make a lot of really good music that still sounds great to my ears - the vocals and all the instruments were brilliantly recorded - sadly as you say they will most likely be forgotten once their old fans are no longer around. Still, maybe if we can no longer remember them, Someone Else Will?

Personally I think you totally missed the point. All of you said unanimously they would be forgotten. But the fact that you did a UA-cam video on them means they will never be forgotten. I say that because you are only the tip of the iceberg. If you search UA-cam there are countless videos being made reviewing there songs by new younger generation of people. In addition Andy Scott's UA-cam channel has a treasure trove of live concerts and videos that can be viewed.
There are many other bands who have done SWEET remakes or have stated SWEET was there inspiration such as Motley Crue, Axl Rose and of course Def Leppard who did Action and performs it on stage. In addition there music shows up on movies such as Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy and I am sure many more.
So in my opinion there music is going to be here forever as social media has made that possible. In regards to SWEET I personally believe they were way ahead of there time and if Brian Connolly did not have the Alcohol Disease and they made it to the mid 80s watch out they would have been huge. But it wasn't meant to be. In my opinion they are one of the 70s premier bands.
I did get to see SWEET open for Fog Hat 1977-78 a dream for me since they were my favorite band.
    My truck tag is SWEET.
There Box set Is amazing highly recommended.
FYI Brian Connolly has a son Jr. who also sings.
I will leave you with this SWEET was Queen before Queen was Queen, change my mind. Keep on Rocking.

I should have discussed more about the longevity comparison with Benny Goodman. Swing music was the peak of popular music for about 15 years. Benny Goodman (and his orchestra) were some of the kings of swing for about 10 years - more or less the mid-30's to the mid-40's. Rock music and its various derivatives (and I'm including EDM, hiphop, pop, and many other things) have now been at the height of popular music for nearly 70 years. Not only that, but in that 70 years, information such as recordings and general information about bands has become much more widely, cheaply, and easily available. Benny may be more or less forgotten, but people still remember Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and other rock pioneers. For that matter, the resurgence of "classic movies", including musicals, has continued to keep swing music in public consciousness, although I think it's fair to say that at the moment there is no indication that it will ever regain its dominant position in popular music.

    • @GrantsRockWarehaus
      @GrantsRockWarehaus  Рік тому

They remember Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard for now, but as times go on, they too will be forgotten. It's just how it works. My 23 y.o. son could care less about Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard.

I do, sadly, feel The Sweet will eventually be forgotten here in the States - absent some major event like a documentary, re-issue campaign, or, as Reed elaborated, use of one of their songs in some cultural event like Breaking Bad with Baby Blue by Badfinger or Stranger Things with Kate Bush. It’s an undeserving fate but when you don’t tour and your presence is neglible that is what happens.
On another note - no way The Beatles will ever be forgotten. They’ve long transcended genre and are cultural and historical icons. Just as Mozart, Beethoven, Bach etc have not been forgotten - the Beatles were masters of their craft and have secured their place among the giants of music.

    • @GrantsRockWarehaus
      @GrantsRockWarehaus  Рік тому

Maybe not be forgotten, but the cultural impact that they made will be. Those baby boomers will only live so long, but they won't have to impact that they once did. There's a show here somewhere..lol
