    Thanks for the hard word in putting this together. It was a tough call and I was more inclined to purchase G15. However, didn't want to spend more on a gaming monitor as I already have a 24" old monitor for office stuff. Will not be carrying it everyday and mux was important. Hence went for L5 Pro.

    Wow, just the review I was looking for. I have been on the fence between these both models and I almost went with the Legion Pro because of the RAM upgrade to run in dual channel. But after seeing this video and how much detail you go into every key aspect of a gaming laptop, you helped me pull the trigger on the Asus G15 3070. I went with the 24GB RAM option as I don't do much development and I'm a casual gamer. I really like the aesthetics of it as well. My only gripe is the lack of webcam, but if needed I can throw one on top of my 34" monitor. An awesome review and subscribed!

    Great video, I can see you put lots of effort on the editing for a first try. I agree with most of what you said but a few things I disagree.
    I think both laptops are neck and neck and if you can get one for even $200 less it should be enough. There are big wins for each device so I think its not that one is better, its about personal preference.
    Legion 5 pro Pros:
    Bigger, brighter, higher res, overall BETTER display
    140w 3070, more performance potential with updates & tweaks
    Both ram sticks user upgradeable
    HDMI 2.1 & MUX switch
    Biggest cons: Device not refined liker Asus, Razer. Poor battery optimisation. No face login or fingerprint.
    Asus Zephyrus G15 Pros:
    More compact/ refined build
    Better keyboard and trackpad
    Better battery life
    Biggest cons: NO webcam, no HDMi 2.1, no MUX.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  2 роки тому +4

      Yeah, honestly I’d pay $200 more for the more premium features of the Zephyrus but that’s just me. But yes beyond that, I’d take either one for the right price, as they’re both amazing. Honestly the biggest disappointment for me with the Legion was the 140W 3070. It just didn’t give that much of a performance boost (but who knows if it gets tweaked in the future?). But the mux switch is awesome! I really wish the G15 had one. If I only planned to keep my laptop in one spot the majority of the time then the Legion is a great choice.

      @JoshCravesTech  2 роки тому +2

      @@bruin098 When gaming, every gaming laptop is a bit loud, this one is just quieter than most. Switching over to Performance mode instead of Turbo in Armoury Crate will lower the fans a bit when gaming. Disabling turbo boost (registry edit) will lower fans even more when gaming with very little sacrifice to performance.
      When idle or doing basic tasks, make sure you’re on silent mode, turbo boost is disabled, and preferably iGPU mode is on so the dGPU isn’t trying to run everything. This will keep the laptop virtually silent. If you need to, you can set a fan curve and power limits in manual mode to fine tune things even more.

    Interesting comparison. My L5Pro performs slightly better than yours, with 88fps in SOTTR at 1600p and 94fps at 1440p, but mine came with 32GB of the faster RAM. With faster RAM the CPU score of the L5Pro in Timespy should be closer to 10.000 instead of 9.000. It is fascinating that the Zephyrus g15 performs so well with a lower Watt 3070. If priced similarly the G15 could be the one to get, that power brick of the L5Pro really is chunky. I do like the bright 16:10 screen though, and the soldered RAM of the G15 is a big turnoff. I think you are mainly lucky that you can get the Zephyrus G15 for a good price. As stated by others, a Zephyrus G15 with the same specs as my l5Pro costs about €400,- more.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  2 роки тому

      I think it’s because I was standing still in those spots? Look at 27:50. That’s more in line with how my Legion 5 Pro actually ran during benchmarks and when I was collecting averages from gameplay. It ran around 1600-1700 majority of the time sometimes 1800Mhz. Sometimes it did dip into that 1500 range but maybe that’s just because there weren’t a ton of different frames to process and it was giving room to the CPU to clock higher.
      Wattage was still high though and if you compare my fps to Jarrod’s Tech it still outperforms his Legion 5 Pro even after he replaced the ram, so it should be in line with how the average L5P performs. I also compared my results to benchmarks from others on Reddit and Discord just to make sure my unit wasn’t messed up or anything.

    I would have completely got the g15 if I was using an external monitor I just really hate the vent design on the back all the heat literally vents right onto the screen and that is my biggest complaint they should have elevated the screen like Acer did with the Triton 500 SE. In the end I wound up getting the legion 5 pro with an rtx 3070 on sale for 1,298. The legion also has an on-site repair process to where they send a tech to your house to fix any issues you may have and it does cover accidental damage. Kind of a biggy

      Yeah, I don’t mind the vents there cause I love the low profile design and I haven’t personally seen any issues caused by it or with other laptops that have that same vent design. The vents venting heat onto the screen heated up the screen and caused HORRIBLE backlight bleed. He got best buy to make an exception and let him return it anyway. He got the MSI GS76 Stealth instead. Sadly unlike the g15 the screen is not elevated onto the m16. There is no screen chin on the m16. So the heat vents right onto the screen. It may have been another underlying issue for your friend, although I can’t say for sure. People on Reddit have even tested it by straight up mining crypto at max power and fans for weeks straight without turning it off (on the M16) and no issues occurred with the screen or anything. I’ve definitely seen more data backing up that it doesn’t affect the screen than I have any that it damages it. That’s just from what I’ve seen though when I was researching for the G15 vs M16.

    I'm really struggling to decide which laptop I'll go for next. Help me decide!
    Legion 5 Pro or Strix G15 G513QR?
    Legion = R7 5800H/RTX 3070/WQHD 165 Hz, 80 Wh battery
    Strix = R9 5900HX, RTX 3070/FHD 300 Hz, 90 Wh battery
    Legion has MUX switch, webcamera, higher quality screen, higher brightness, 10W higher TDP on GPU and more ports.
    Strix has better battery life, higher screen refresh rate, better portability, better keyboard and trackpad, slightly faster processor, better speakers.
    I'm traveling to work quite a lot, and the portability and battery life means a bit, but the webcamera also does. I do both editing and gaming, so the Strix will be better for rendering, and the Legion will be better for gaming. Legion has slightly larger screen and higher resolution, which is nice when editing (and gaming, but will impact performance). Strix has 300 Hz refresh rate which is nice when I play CS:GO!
    These two laptops are so good at countering eachother 😅 Which one would YOU go for, and why?

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  2 роки тому +1

      Is the QHD Strix available where you live? I’d go for that if so. But the FHD one is still really nice. Honestly you can’t go wrong with either one.
      Do you plan to use the laptop’s own keyboard and trackpad often? If so definitely go for the Strix. The Legion’s trackpad is so frustrating to me, lol. Also if you plan on hooking up to an external monitor often then the Strix is a good choice too.
      But if you plan on mostly just using the laptop screen itself with an external mouse then the Legion is probably the better choice because of the extra height and brighter, higher res screen.

      @@JoshCravesTech Can only get the QHD for the Advantage edition here it seems.
      I plan to use the Laptop's keyboard only, and maybe 50/50 between trackpad and mouse.
      Such a difficult choice lol, but the WQHD display on the Legion 5 Pro seems to be very nice looking.

    It just could be a point of perspective, but the port on the G15 are kind of in the way compared to the Legion. Which has most of them tucked away on the back. The same for fan noise. If you lead the heat away to the back, your noise will be considerable less than lead over the screen.
    Seems to me that the bias you've got against the Lenovo is quite big. And if compared, both laptops will actually perform quite the same. They are both good build laptops and the issues you've mentioned did not appear with my laptop (L5P).
    Complaining that charging with the big powerbrick is just less portable, seems to me a bit off, the cables are just fine, not less flexible than the ones of my other laptops and when you charge, of course your portability will be less, the machine is hooked on the powergrid. I just keep mine laying around, no need to pick it up.
    The RAM issue you've dismissed quite easily is just a thing. My L5P was delivered with 32 GB and is still upgradeable when needed. SOmething you just can't do with the G15. If you need more RAM, well that would suck.
    About the scaling of the native resolutions, I haven't got any game which did not scale right to this resolutions. It could be that we're not playing the same games but nevertheless this issue is just not that big of a deal and certainly no reason to compare results of different resolutions and performance levels. The L5P needs to drive more pixels, so a drop of FPS is to be expected, You showing that these are still in each other ballpark is a plus for the L5P.
    The thermal issue and not being to explain why the 5800 gets hotter that the 5900 is just wattage, there is a 10 watt difference, and it still keeps the cpu at a higher clockrate. And actually the difference between the cpu's in performance is just not that big.
    In the SOTTR benchmark the blue led in the powerbutton is visible of the L5P, this is the quiet mode, the low wattage/performance mode. (34m27s). I hope you used the right powersetting for all benchmarks.
    To my conclusion, both are good laptops, this review/benchmark leaves some questions to be asked and is probably biased by your own preference. And during typing and looking at your review my L5P never once ramped up with fan noise. The G15 will probably perform the same, considering the lower power usage.

    • @JoshCravesTech
      @JoshCravesTech  2 роки тому +1

      The ports on the back of the Legion, as I said, is cool for some people, but personally I’m not a fan. I’m on the move a good bit (hence why most people buy a laptop in the first place) and plugging things into the side is more convenient. Fan noise, is exactly as I observed. For the Legion, it’s louder for people behind the laptop (or if it’s up against a wall). For the G15, it’s louder for the person in front of the screen, as the fans bounce off the screen. Overall, I’ve found the G15 quieter while gaming, and the silent mode is WAY better at staying quiet, which is a HUGE deal for me.
      I don’t have any bias against Lenovo. I had my G15 already and I bought the Legion 5 Pro fully expecting to sell my G15, sacrificing a little portability for performance, and was disappointed to find that it pretty much performs the same. So I’m over here like “Why would I sacrifice all this portability, awesome trackpad, keyboard, etc. for something that’s way chunkier and performs basically the same?” That’s just my opinion. That doesn’t mean the Legion 5 Pro sucks. It’s an awesome laptop still. For the right price, I’d take either one.
      It’s no argument though that the Legion 5 Pro is less portable. It simply is. I’ve spent weeks using both. The cable is thick and not flexible. The charging brick is massive. There’s no arguing that, lol.
      The Legion 5 Pro with 32Gb doesn’t usually have the slow ram timings. The G15 having one stick soldered is a dealbreaker for some people, but I’ve never had an issue with 16GB. I edit all my videos and it works fine with no lag or ram bottleneck. I can always upgrade to 24gb or 40gb if needed and still get dual channel performance from the first 16gb.
      As for resolution, not every game supports 16:10, especially older titles. Some games just zoom in, some stretch it vertically, and others have black bars. This isn’t the majority of games, but it’s definitely a thing. As for comparing at native res, I’d have to disagree with you. Watch my most recent video. I have more tests in 1440p on the Legion 5 Pro. Although most people won’t play in that resolution, it gains very little from dropping to 1440p and sometimes even loses fps by doing so.
      The Legion runs hotter in temps, yeah. The G15 has liquid metal and a more efficient CPU so yes that’s no surprise. Even when the G15 reaches higher clocks the CPU stays relatively cooler than the Legion at similar clock speeds.
      I did use the right settings in Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The footage you’re talking about is just b-roll of when I ran it in quiet mode, not what was used for that actual test.
      I’m glad your Legion’s fans aren’t randomly ramping up. Mine and several others I’ve asked have had the same issue though, even in quiet mode. It doesn’t happen in 5 or 10 minutes, usually every 15-30 minutes of normal use. Maybe staying in hybrid mode helps, but a lot of people don’t like to be in hybrid mode on the L5P.

    I have L5P
    Fan noise common problem with windows laptop. So, that never a factor in my decision.
    Why I chose L5P:
    Build quality, nice and solid. Combination of aluminum and good plastic.
    Ports arrangement, none come close to this. One type C on the left, one type A at the right, the rest are behind.
    Cursor keys are normal size and well separated from adjacent keys, again rare to see this.
    Keypad is a must for me. It helps a lot with my daily use and work.
    Well thought fn keys combo, easy to change kb light profile, change framerate, change power profile, and the usual combos.
    I never realise 16:10 can be a pleasure to look and work with, that small extra space makes a lot of difference
    Compared to Asus, Lenovo still priced reasonably within my budget for similar spec.
    Design and look wise, it is sleek, clean and express sturdiness without being too "loud"
    This laptop does not attract fingerprints and smudges easily! Trust me! I hate those dirty looks
    ----
    What might put you off from this:
    It is heavy especially with that extra 300w brick
    Default so-dimm is slow, will affect performance. If you want to maximise L5P potential, have to buy new so-dimm
    720p front cam... but it is hard to find windows laptop that can match apple camera
    Speaker n mic, again same reason as above
    ---
    In the end, I'm happy and satisfied with my purchase. Never look back.

    I just came across this video while searching for help with my G15. I think maybe I got one of those outlyers that Asus QC missed. Mine has a RTX3080 in it however I cannot get more than 30FPS consistently in Halo Infinite or Warzone. I've done tons of troubleshooting too, cleaned old drivers, tried current driver from Nvidia 497.09 at time of writing this as well as removing and trying older driver from back in Sept. And when I say running at 30fps that's lowering to 1080p while also turning all settings to low. I think its time for an RMA on this one.
