What made it significant (for me) was that the previous hitter, Paul O'Neill, stretched a single into a double, nearly killing himself in the process. Bernie swung at the first pitch and popped out. In a tight game like that, a batter needs to have patience. I think he forgot that, in that series.

Yeah, pitching hurt them incredibly after 2001. The pitching was relatively good for 2002-2003 but besides Pettitte and Musina, the starting pitching staff was old and battling injuries in both years. The rotation was in shambles for the 02 postseason, what killed us in the 02 postseason was Pettitte was injured, Duque and Wells were not healthy and the bullpen was dismal. For the 03 postseason the staff was in a bit better shape for the postseason and we got to the World Series with a healthy Pettitte, Duque out for the season however. Also, an injured Wells that couldn't finish 1 inning, bad key spot pitching by the bullpen as well as bad key spot hitting(where the yankees could have blown the series wide open)did us in against the Marlins. In retrospect the Yankees actually outplayed the Marlins but with a bit of luck the Marlins won the series anyway which is frustrating to say the least. A series the Yankees could have easily won and should have won even with some injuries. But from 2004 through 2008 was when the Yankees pitching staff really became dismal and was truly in shambles, not resigning Pettitte after 2003 was just the beginning of bad times. If you look at the rotation in those years it's painful to see really, Cashman's worst times as a gm imo. But because of guys like Mariano holding down the bullpen and the great hitting lineups as a whole the Yankees were able to get it done in the regular season. But come postseason the Yankees just didn't have pitching depth. Then 2009 came when finally we got great signings and pitching. Just think if the front office did what they did for 2009 much earlier it be a different story.

That Marlins team was really good also though. They wanted to beat us they wanted to beat the big bad Yankees in the World Series. Especially I'm sure Mike Lowell who was supposed to be our next 3rd baseman but because Drew F'n Henson they traded him and we all know how Henson went on to have a great Yankee career .... Oh wait no he decided he didn't wanna play.
Cool personal story. I was 9 years old behind home plate at that ALCS game against the O'c with my Uncle. Jeffrey Maier reached over the fence to snag in a Jeter home run that would be caught ball by Tony Tarasco. Bernie hit that ball in the bottom of the 11th. I've NEVER heard that old stadium that loud. After we walked out of the stadium we walked by the Diamond Club. You could hear the chants of drunken men screaming at the top of their lungs, "BERNIE, BERNIE, BERNIE!" One of my earliest childhood memories from the old stadium. Damn, I miss baseball!

Then suddenly, as if on cue, everyone fell backwards at the exact same time! When we landed on the ground no one was hurt and everyone was laughing and high-fiving. It's one of the great memories from my half-century of being a Yankee fan.

Bernie was a smart guy. During the regular season we'd laugh as he gave up on balls the moment his cleats touched the warning track. But then in the post-season the guy was all of the wall like superman. But that kept him playing 145+ games a year while the "stud" center fielders would wind up with concussions and broken bones from crashing into the wall in regular season games. And in 1996 he without question carried them to the World Series with his bat.

Excellent selections overall. I expected to find the switch-hit HRs in the clinching Game 4 96 Division Series against Texas. I also think the HR against Benitez in 98 setting off the brawl is worthy of consideration. I'd go with those over the switch-hit HR's in the losing Game 3 in 95 against Seattle and the World Series HR against the Marlins.

Seattle and Atlanta were loaded with Hall of Famers. Atlanta alone had 4 who made it including 3 starting pitchers on the 96 team. Crazy how neither team accomplished a World Series Title.
Why isn't this man in consideration for the Hall of Fame?. He has the most postseason homers in MLB History he's a 4 time World Champion he's won a batting title he's got 4 gold gloves and was a perennial All Star.

Why isn't this man in consideration for the Hall of Fame?. He has the most postseason homers in MLB History he's a 4 time World Champion he's won a batting title he's got 4 gold gloves and was a perennial All Star.
Also I was sitting in the Bleachers for no.2 on the list. I remember seeing the ball coming towards where I was sitting and the crowd exploded after it landed over the fence.

I was just looking at his stats. Guy had a .297 career average, he was close to Hall of Fame level imo. Always loved Bernie always will. We’d be blessed to have a Bernie Williams on the current Yankee roster
