this is one of the most helpful travel vlog editing videos i've seen. thank you so much for doing this and sharing with us! The small details you talk about are so insightful to new editors.
I love watching these sorts of videos, it helps a lot (I do Media study’s and photography at school) knowing that people actually use it in other ways other than just movies and instagram posts. Thanks this was very helpful!
Thank you very much for sharing your workflow and techniques. I am trying to establish a routine to improve editing my videos. your video was very inspiring to me.
Crazy helpful tip on the syncopated rhythm and speed ramping. You've quickly become one of my fave vloggers on youtube for your camera/editing and the personality that comes through. Its great to learn from those you respect. So thanks! and can't wait to try these tips out myself. Looking forward to Thailandbhulululu :D
Final Cut tip that will help you!!!! It’s faster to just double click the audio line on a video clip and you can then just drag the start or end of the audio beyond where the video finishes. This way the audio will still be attached but you can make the J and L cut still. No need to detach audio. Hope that helps. 😊
Great video, Hannah. I totally agree with your end sentiment of just getting out there and doing it. I think you have inspired me to film a day in my hometown and edit it just for practise! :)
Your vlogs have really become my "go to guide" and reference to those little gems of Japan. Thank you and I certainly appreciate the effort you've put in to making your videos. Let not anything (anyone) ever discourage you from what you love to do. Follow your heart and pursue your dreams! You have my support! 😃💖🥂
Super helpful, fantastic videos. I am enjoying your content and I also glad to know you have learned by doing yourself and not going to a Film School. I am learning as well and you are such an inspiration for me. Thanks a lots. Another type of videos like this would be amazing! I have also Mac Book Air but I got Adobe Premiere instead try first Final cut Pro.
Wish I could give this video two 👍👍. A lot of the editing and storytelling techniques you use are so seamless, that don't register, so it was nice having you walk us through them. Yes, a picture (showing) can say a thousands words. A master storyteller could probably get through an entire video without any words and only music and sounds. But I do like how you address the camera directly and make it seem intimate even though it is directed at thousands of viewers. Very much looking forward to your adventures in Thailand..
Great insight into your thought process behind your videos. Can’t say it’s likely I’ll start vlogging anytime soon but it was fascinating to see how you go about it. :)
Awesome tips Hannah- especially the point about if you would hear the music at the actual scene 😉 that’s such a great way to describe how to find the right music! 👍
I just realized you're at 112k subscribers now and I remember when i first discovered and subscribed to u when u had only 1.5k subs. I feel so proud of how farm you've come! Keep up your amazing videos! :D
This is really great! I stumbled upon your vlog researching a holiday to the Philippines last Christmas, but have continued to watch your recent videos and am a big fan! Keep up the great work!
You're really underrated. The raw passion and clarity of your purpose and opinion and how you want others to feel closer to knowing the place and how it could be instead of being instagram beautifully eating breakfast with elephants or having arm aches from sitting still just for a pose that tells nothing of the place but the "influencer" is just what people need. Don't be disheartened by the insignificant viewers, we're all the quality here, I am quite sure of that.
I enjoy your video construction. Great shots, your mistakes left in, and how you verbally correct yourself as if you are off camera. Those make me laugh... I do that to myself out loud all the time. I try to sync my music to making my art in what few videos I have made, but practice will fix that as time passes. I also love melodic piano pieces. I was in music as a sax player for 7 years, and gained the first chair in jazz, which is the highest music class in our high schools, in my sophmore year. So music to me is very important. I wanna make my own music for my videos, but need to research and save moneies to make that happen in the future. I enjoy what you do, and probably say that in every video. But I notice small things in videos a lot, and enjoy experiencing all you present.
this is so interesting i posted a video yesterday and seeing how you do it think that I will drag myself kicking and screaming and do a lot more and get better stay safe and the way you do your reports perfect dont change see ya and enjoy yourselves
Man, that’s quite the insight into your process. The last post was a good example to use, it had so many noticeably special moments. The drone footage, the old lady, the snow angel. It also helps to follow you on Instagram, so that you don’t need to explain certain things. Like the milk outside the window because you had no fridge in the room, everyone following would already know the what and the why. Thanks for making this, enjoy Chiang Mai! 🐘
Great vlog, and lots of useful tips, thanks Hannah, oh I am going to Thailand later this year, and to meet a mate who is a member of my photo group, the editing was useful, all new to me but i use lightroom for my photos, so more studying and more, nice one!!
I've been admiring your editing for a while now so I'm really happy about these tips. Thanks for the useful information! Especially the boring talking part is where I have a lot to improve. 😅
Being a fan of Brad Bird(director Incredibles, Iron Gaint, ... big guy at Disney), he gave this advice that kinda puts all artists in a certain group. He said: "We all learn what we like by knowing what we don't like as well. Now, after saying something sucks ask yourself WHY it sucked. A lot of people don't do this. THEN ask yourself how you would FIX it. And be able to tell other people how you would fix it. This is what almost no one does". He also said in that interview: "go DO stuff. And don't wait for permission or support. You'll get permission and support AFTER you have done the thing". What I wanted to say with this (xd) : that you seem to know why what you do works. Keep doing what you're doing.👍🏻
Oh I didn't comment on that in the Fuji video but I too find it SO heartwarming that the lady at the hotel waited on you...just feels so...motherly and sweet! :) Thanks for sharing, love learning from you! Very professional :)
New subscriber here! I have only seen a few minutes of this video and decided to check out your channel. I knew from all those this is gonna be a good one! Thanks and can't wait to watch more from you
Thanks for pointing out the drone flying things, outside of the cities it is legal to fly drones here in Japan, but also over residential areas a minimum of 30m away from people or some towns prohibit flying. This is important for visitors that might not be familiar with Japanese drone laws and could save them from a 500,000yen fine! Nice tips, show don't tell really is the focus of storytelling, always enjoy your style, even places I have been to around Tokyo, you've presented in a unique way. Since most of your vlogs are east of Fuji, that's the 50hz electricity zone so a lot of slow motion tends to flicker more if you go above 100fps, it isn't so bad over here in Nagoya thanks to 60hz (which is everything west of Fuji), but slowmo can be a challenge depending on the lighting anywhere (good luck with 240fps+).
5:39 Yeah especially indoor stuff tends to be quite dark with bad lighting, gotta get the Light in the face and not from the side :D. And Pol Filter are fun especially for reflections, but well since they are ... Polarised u have to rotate them ^^ 7:28 Try looking into your NTSC/PAL selection.
Great video! It's amazing just how involved video editing can be with the myriad of things you need to consider. I spend a lot of time on UA-cam and follow quite a number of vloggers, most of whom do a great job. I have no doubt, though, that your channel is far and away ahead of all the others in terms of the content and the way it's put together. It's my favourite anyway! Of course, the others can't be as good as yours because you're not in them. It's lovely spending time with you on your channel. Cheers
Awesome content and thank you for following the idea of "show not tell", the whole point of why I want to watch travel vlogs is to get an imagery of it, so I also dislike when I watch a vlog were there's only 30 seconds to a minute of combined "footage" while the rest is filled with a faceshot of just them talking!
I love how you share your mistakes, it lessens that distance to your audience, where others have this vibe about them like, 'I'm the creator, you are my subs', so thanks for being real Hannah. I honestly don't know how you do it, I hate watching/listening to myself, maybe that's something you can get used to over time??
Ooooo I know that vibe well and I'm not a fan of it haha. I'm not better than anyone cuz I know how to use Final Cut lol. Thank you for your message! It did take me awhile to not cringe at myself (and sometimes I still do) but it certainly gets easier with time!
I use imovie and keynote for "special effects" with icloud with a very old mac, still it works well. I used to live in Singapore (10 years) as well, just found out that you lived there as well.
The reason for the flicker is to do with the frequency of the electric grid. Japan has uniquely runs 2 different grids due to the way it was developed in the early 20th century. One company brought in technology from the US (Osaka) and one brought in equipment from Germany (50hz) for Tokyo. So what you end up with is a grid that is incompatible, which is why when the Fuhishima disaster happened the other half of Japan could not help the other half to share the load. Anyway, if you are in Tokyo and north, shoot 50fps or 25fps (50hz), if you are South of Tokyo, shoot 60fps/30fps (60hz) to prevent flicker.
Seriously loved this bts. Educational as well as the already inspirational and entertainingal (not really a word but rhymes with inspirational😁). More power to you Hannah 😀
I was just thinking how to make nice vlog , and I luckily found this video. It's very helpful. Thank you always, Hannah san for being a great Influencer!! xxoo Arigatougozaimsu!!
Ya filming with the lights can be frustrating in Japan. Especially if you get a decent shot and not notice the light in the corner flickering. Takes me a moment or two to find that sweet spot with the shutter.
"Show don't tell" Really helpful advice... I just filmed something in Malaysia that I popped into Premiere and while I was rewatching the footage it was so desperately boring that I decided to scrap the entire video :-( Your advice hit the nail on the head, I need to talk less, show more!
Great tips for transitions and the audio! I would have never thought about that. I'm starting to get into videography myself, and I was wondering if there's ever a visualization/mental storyboarding process that happens prior to shooting and editing? Any tips for that?
@Currently Hannah Thanks for this Video 👍 FYI: Try to use 50fps with double value for the shutter-speed around Kantō area. In Japan it's mostly either 50fps with 1/100 shutter or 60fps with 1/120 shutter to get rid of the out of sync frequency. That should help 😉
When I was video editing, long ago, most of the time I was choosing the music first, then making the clips revolving around it. When it was news editing, it was different of course.
Currently Hannah I see the music as the main body and the picture a way to dress it up. I like what you do and totally agree with what you said about boring video like... so today I will do this and that... Did you try the Audition feature in Final Cut Pro?
Currently Hannah it’s so cool. For a scene you can have different clip and play the scene like you would have different actors playing the same role. It allow you to quickly choose the clip who fit the best for your scene. support.apple.com/kb/PH12641?locale=en_CA&viewlocale=en_US
Hi, Hannah! Hope you read this. I started watching your videos cause I’m going to Japan with my parents and other family members this year and immediately became a big fan. I’ve been to Japan before but I think most of the fun of it is for young people. I saw that your parents visited you in Japan and want to ask you which spots could be most enjoyable for older visitors like my parents (besides shrines and malls)? Thanks a lot and keep up with your amazing vids, we love them!
I have the sony action cam. I think it's superior to the go pro (except maybe the latest gopro model) and has the same color grading as my sony camera. Thanks for the great video!
Instead of detaching audio, as this can end up making it easy to throw the audio out of sync, just double click the audio waveform and then you’ll be able to trim and extend (J and L cuts) the audio independently of the video.
Hello Hannah, even though I am not youtuber, I understand you disclosed your many secret of your videos this time. You can proud of yourself, well done !
I just wanna start out editing some videos. I got a Yi 4K camera for outdoors so nothing really special. Will I be able to start with just iMovie or is it very limited? Final Cut costs quite a bit so I don't want to break the bank before I am sure I can do this... Any suggestions on iMovie or alternatives?
I will write in Portuguese, sorry. Já são 4 horas da madrugada aqui no Brazil, eu estava estudando inglês... Então vim para o UA-cam ver algum vídeo seu para treinar meu Listening em inglês, E você acabou de postar um novo vídeo! Thank You! Like it! I love you. S2
PS: Your accent sounds like British for me... I don't know why. Am i right?? I am still learning, i don't understand you 100%. I think it is kind of 40%. :)
Here is translation/Aqui está a tradução It's 4 AM here in Brazil, I was studyng English...So I came to youtube what a video to train my Listening and you just posted a new video. Training to be a translater/Treinar para ser tradutor
That would've been cool but unfortunately they only featured creators from their creator agency and I'm with a different one. UA-cam is all very political hahaha.
I’ve been waiting for this awesome video forever :) Question: with showing drone shots early on in the video, have you seen the audience retention go up when you first started doing it?
Literally watching this as I’m getting on the train home, which is when I have been doing editing. Helpful video and great tips. Keep up the awesome content. P.S. Are you still working at the magical place during March? We’ll be there mid month. 😃
For probably the 2nd or 3rd time in my whole life I watched a completely irrevelent 1:18 min long youtube ad without skipping. Can I get a heart please?
Nice Hannah. You could do a class on film making. If you don't mind me asking. How long have you been editing your own videos? It really does look like professional work and now I found out that you didn't even take actual classes, instead learning by experience. I don't think I could do it. I have no idea about photography >_< So much respect for how much you have achieved.
Thank you so much! I’ve got a lot left to learn but it’s nice to see progress over the years. I’ve made a few simple short films in high school but apart from that, I’ve been making videos for as long as I’ve been on UA-cam. About 2.5 years :)
Just wondering, are you allowed to just fly your drone around Japan? It's been pretty tough Canada where I live and I've noticed other cities have really clamped down drone flying...
Q: how do youtubers get famous clips and make it a meme in their videos? Like at 1:15 when you said "groundbreak" and had that clip. Is there a service site with a searchable bank? Something like storyblocks?
As you brought up the subject. I did notice this video (the one you are showing the edit) was sort of flat compared to a majority of your other vids. I made a comment on that video but deleted it as I am a firm believer you only make comment on the content. I have never used Final Cut so I don't know what is available but given where you were at I think I would have preferred to see a little more saturation, luminance and brightness.
Yeah I’m still working out what my favourite picture profile is on my Sony. I’m using a profile atm that was recommended online but I’m already looking into other styles to see what suits best.
this is one of the most helpful travel vlog editing videos i've seen. thank you so much for doing this and sharing with us! The small details you talk about are so insightful to new editors.
I love watching these sorts of videos, it helps a lot (I do Media study’s and photography at school) knowing that people actually use it in other ways other than just movies and instagram posts. Thanks this was very helpful!
I’m so glad you got something out of this! Happy to help!
Your videos are awesome...totally appreciate your skills. Thanks for sharing the amazing places!
Thanks for watching!
Wonderfully inspirational as always. I think next week--or whenever this horrible rain goes away--i will try my hand at my first little video project!
Great video, Hannah. I totally agree with your end sentiment of just getting out there and doing it. I think you have inspired me to film a day in my hometown and edit it just for practise! :)
Get it Ellen! ANY practice is better than none.
Love how you put your personality all over this technical video! Definitely sets you apart!
Hahaha thank you!
I Love it when you and Jess get together. Yall make a great team.
Your vlogs have really become my "go to guide" and reference to those little gems of Japan. Thank you and I certainly appreciate the effort you've put in to making your videos. Let not anything (anyone) ever discourage you from what you love to do. Follow your heart and pursue your dreams! You have my support! 😃💖🥂
Thanks! I’m so glad it’s been helpful!
Evidence as to why your videos are go well done. As a television editor starting in 1972 (yes I'm old) it was nice to see what's new. Thanks.
Thank you for sharing your tips with us. Your Mt. Fuji video was stunning.
Thank you so much :)
Thanks Hannah. Very interesting. Please make more videos like this. I really like your style of videos.
Excited to watch this! i've been waiting for more "Behind-the-scenes" Hannah. Anything i can glean from your techniques is helpful. THank you !!
You're very welcome :)
Wow! The thought you put into your videos is amazing! I need to lift my game. Great stuff.
Yeah I'd like to experiment a bit more in the future with no talking in some videos but sometimes it really is necessary
great tips from one of my favorite travel vloggers!
You are wonderful :) And a great teacher, I love artists sharing their knowledge and artistry. And I love love love the way you make videos. 😍👏❤️
Great vlog, and lots of useful tips, thanks Hannah, oh I am going to Thailand later this year, and to meet a mate who is a member of my photo group,
the editing was useful, all new to me but i use lightroom for my photos, so more studying and more, nice one!!
Very helpful, Hanna! Thanks for doing this!
This is cool! As a novice to editing, I now feel causally educated. Thanks!
Casual education is my jam haha
@@CurrentlyHannah i like it 😄 mine too I think
Great tips. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Hannh . I've tried to make editing videos but yours is a better.video so I'm sending it to her. 😊
Really good, enjoyed this a lot, great process.
Nice work flow. Thanks for sharing.
some good tips in here thanks!
Why on earth would anyone dislike this video? If you don’t like the video just move onto the next. Thanks for sharing 👍🏼
Greatvideo! Caught my eye.
Wow cool video!! Thank you for showing your editing tips and skills 🥰💓
You’re welcome :)
I've been admiring your editing for a while now so I'm really happy about these tips. Thanks for the useful information!
Especially the boring talking part is where I have a lot to improve. 😅
My partner just showed me your channel since I'm interested in videography and this video is so helpful!
Being a fan of Brad Bird(director Incredibles, Iron Gaint, ... big guy at Disney), he gave this advice that kinda puts all artists in a certain group. He said:

Ugh that old lady was just the cutest! Such a real moment.

Love the explanation and hope it will help with my own videos. Thank you! :)
I'm watching this while editing my own show. I love seeing other people use FCPX.

I immediately thought of somebody who starts their vlog that way, waking up and telling us their plans.
Hahaha I think everyone knows someone 🤣

Do you sell your drone videos as video stock ?
Awesome!
Seriously loved this bts. Educational as well as the already inspirational and entertainingal (not really a word but rhymes with inspirational😁). More power to you Hannah 😀

Ya filming with the lights can be frustrating in Japan. Especially if you get a decent shot and not notice the light in the corner flickering. Takes me a moment or two to find that sweet spot with the shutter.
Yessss this happened to me recently.
"Show don't tell" Really helpful advice... I just filmed something in Malaysia that I popped into Premiere and while I was rewatching the footage it was so desperately boring that I decided to scrap the entire video :-( Your advice hit the nail on the head, I need to talk less, show more!
Very good. You’ve picked out a number of things that drive mad with others’ videos. Now I know why I get sick of them.
Great tips for transitions and the audio! I would have never thought about that. I'm starting to get into videography myself, and I was wondering if there's ever a visualization/mental storyboarding process that happens prior to shooting and editing? Any tips for that?
@Currently Hannah
Thanks for this Video 👍
FYI: Try to use 50fps with double value for the shutter-speed around Kantō area.
In Japan it's mostly either 50fps with 1/100 shutter or 60fps with 1/120 shutter to get rid of the out of sync frequency.
That should help 😉
Ahhhh well then. I used 30fps with 1/60 shutter so there's my problem!
This is awesome ❤️

Thank you for the video!
It was quite informative. :D
You are so underrated!!!
What software do you use? And Windows suggestions?
And the new DJI Osmos camera have front screen for framing shots 🙂
Loved it...💙
Instead of detaching audio, as this can end up making it easy to throw the audio out of sync, just double click the audio waveform and then you’ll be able to trim and extend (J and L cuts) the audio independently of the video.
Great video Hannah! 🙌
Thanks for the tip Hannah. Cool Vlog. Aloha
Hi Hannah! can you reccommend a way to backup pictures from your camera, without use of laptops? thanks
You should come to Montreal... we have 4 foot of snow everywhere.
As always, love your stuff Hannah! You forgot to talk about how and when you decide to add in your bloopers! #comedicgenius
Hahah well if I've got enough of them it'd be a shame to not include them. Depends how much coffee I've had.
I was wondering what editor you are using. Since I have been struggling between video editors. Thanks, you have helped me learn towards a choice.
Final Cut Pro X and I get music from Artlist
What was the editing software for video editing? Usually which editing software do you use most? Thanks in advance.
Thiago Barboza She’s Australian. =)
Here is translation/Aqui está a tradução

Training to be a translater/Treinar para ser tradutor
@@BaezFlix Oh, Nice!! Thank you guys! o/
Love it
You should’ve been a guest on the Journey Across Japan!
That would've been cool but unfortunately they only featured creators from their creator agency and I'm with a different one. UA-cam is all very political hahaha.
Currently Hannah oh yea I guess you’re right, I didn’t realize all the guests were from Tokyo Creative
I’ve been waiting for this awesome video forever :) Question: with showing drone shots early on in the video, have you seen the audience retention go up when you first started doing it?
Love you present ,it very good time.
Literally watching this as I’m getting on the train home, which is when I have been doing editing. Helpful video and great tips. Keep up the awesome content.
P.S. Are you still working at the magical place during March? We’ll be there mid month. 😃
Oh perfect timing! I hope it’s helpful to you! And yes I’ll be there till the end of March :)
For probably the 2nd or 3rd time in my whole life I watched a completely irrevelent 1:18 min long youtube ad without skipping. Can I get a heart please?
If a get a heart I would never skip any ad on your channel.😄
The real MVP!
Peter mckinnon posted a tutorial to deal with that flickering of lights, might help
Nice. What video editor is it...???
music theory with hannah
i remember that in english class too
"I gave this corn a bit of personality"
Ahhh Jerry. He just didn’t wanna stay in that salad!
Just wondering, are you allowed to just fly your drone around Japan? It's been pretty tough Canada where I live and I've noticed other cities have really clamped down drone flying...
Hey! I've actually made an entire video about drone flying in Japan :D
@@CurrentlyHannah cool thanks! I'll go look it up!
Q: how do youtubers get famous clips and make it a meme in their videos? Like at 1:15 when you said "groundbreak" and had that clip. Is there a service site with a searchable bank? Something like storyblocks?
Im living in Sydney now to study MBA.
