    Obviously - nothing in this video is sponsored. This is my own camera I bought with my own money :)
    In Part 1 - we did a deep dive into specs and everything on the outside.
    In (THIS) Part 2 - we take a deep dive through its menu system, and all the settings.
    In Part 3 - we will dive into rigging out Komodo with accessories I currently have. Tommy Ribs, external monitor, etc.
    In Part 4 - we will go through RED Workflow on OS X. From R3D files to working in Final Cut Pro X.
    My Komodo is a pre-(mass)-production model. Limited edition Storm Trooper white (there's about 1000-1300 in the wild). It is 100% finalized production ready hardware with BETA firmware/software.
    Currently works only with some EF lenses through RF to EF adapter. But will fully support Canon RF lenses in the near future.
    Komodo should be officially out within a month or two (End of October or in November of 2020) and should cost about $6,000.
    Komodo is a 6K digital CINEMA camera, with GLOBAL SHUTTER! Records videos in RED RAW (R3D) format internally to a to CFast 2.0 cards.
    - It has an RF Lens mount
    - Capacitive Touch Screen at the top
    - Is very small (4" cube weighing about 2 pounds)
    - Accepts Canon BP-9 series (955 and 975) batteries and can run 3.5 hours on two 955s
    - RED Color Science and REAL RAW file format
    - Extremely tough (though not weather sealed)
    - WiFi connectivity, remote control, etc.
    - and more (watch the video) :-)
    If you want me to answer any questions in the future videos, please let me know.
    Enjoy!

    FYI - I got a note from someone about the Project Playback frame rate (a piece I did not quite understand as I noted in the video). Here's what Jonny said: "Project Timebase is “playback” rate not what it’s being saved as. The recording rate is physically how many frames are being recorded.
    So if you record in 50fps and then have your project timebase as 25 you’ll get 2x slower playback.
    Nobody sets a project timebase of 120fps because nobody watches content at 120fps with a recording rate of 120fps (yet) we view it one of 23.976, 24, 25, 30, 59.94 and 60."
    You can read more here: docs.red.com/955-0182/DSMC2DRAGONXOperationGuide/Content/5_Advanced_Menus/1_Settings/Project/Frame_Rate.htm

    This is certainly what people pay money for. The time you've invested in explaining the Komodo in such an informative way says everything about who you are to me at least. Bro you are the best reviewer, I can say I have ever watched online. I was torn between purchasing the Sony FX6 because of my want for low light situations, but I also like the global shutter and other features on the Komodo. I do believe I will purchase the Komodo now because of how I feel I'm ready to use it. All I can say is wow!

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you. Btw - if low light matters to you I would like to mention this probably isn’t the right camera. While I’ve seen some great low light footage on Komodo Users Group on Facebook - it was usually from people who really knew what they were doing. I, for example, am not one of those :)
      I think this is a great camera if you’re shooting at full 6k. For all lower resolutions, due to crop on the sensor, light sensitivity and image quality will suffer further.
      Not trying to dissuade you from getting one, but would recommend renting it first so you’re sure. At least nowadays it seems it’s easy (and inexpensive) to rent a full Komodo kit.
      And thank you for the kind comment re: my reviewing. But my favorite reviewer is still Gerald Undone. Just waiting for him to actually get one in his hands on one :)

    I'm loving these in-depth videos they are insanely helpful and thorough. You giving hypothetical circumstances or reasons to use certain modes that I didn't know about or understood is even more-so helpful. I was originally between a C300 mk III or a Blackmagic 12K. Now i'm between The Red Komodo or the Canon C70 and loving that they are so much better for my low budget!
    Thank you, looking forward to more.

    Something I'm a little unclear of having gone through the menus myself: If I'm shooting in ProRes 4K and the FORMAT is set to 6K, it doesn't seem to crop. But when I set the FORMAT to 4K it does crop, even though it's capturing 4K in both scenarios... Is that perhaps a workaround to avoiding cropping in 4K? Would you foresee any disadvantage to capturing 4K ProRes in a 6K FORMAT?

    Quick question regarding time display on lcd screen, now that my time display is TOD which is exactly my time of the day for the camera, but how do I switch my time display back to the run time of the camera like urs in the video, for example, 10min of camera running time suppose to show 10min on lcd screen as well. Can I ask how durable the top of the Komodo is? I'm from Scotland forever shooting in the rain, some days much worse than others but nothing to break good weather sealing but the top of the Komodo seems pretty exposed i'd love to know if the rain will be a flight risk?

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому +3

      Well, the top seems decently "closed off", as long as you don't press the buttons. However, I would not recommend shooting with rain falling on Komodo.
      The lens mount is not sealed, all the ports on the back are open (one droplet could short your expander port or DC-in port), water could slip behind the battery and short it, etc. etc. Sides are also VERY open (you can actually see through it from left to right (intake through exhaust)) - and getting water into any of that even in small amount would probably not be good. It's definitely not meant to be exposed to elements.
      Now, there are cool pictures of how "tough" Komodo is floating around - with sand and dust and all kinds of stuff over it. I do not know how "real" those are. I do believe it can and does fare much better in a dust storm than rain though.
      With all that said, it is so small, you could really just cover it with some water proof material on top ("Komodo rain coat?" :)) wrap it around the lens and go about your day ... Heck, even a plastic grocery bag would do :)
      I am also certain that we may soon see some cool "hoodies" made out of light but strong plastic that could mount on top and provide some cover and channel water around? If there were one, I'd surely buy it ... Maybe I'll 3D print some :)
      Hope this answers your question. BTW - Jealous of your location. Wish I was roaming around Scotland with Komodo... Beats roaming around Ohio haha!

    • @ChrisSchieritz
      @ChrisSchieritz 3 роки тому +1

      Silfen Path Hats off to you sir for the major in depth head up!
      I’ll most definitely plan ahead in that case, I can imagine it’s a sturdy body but as you described it did seem prone to water damage, I’ve had my gear quite drenched at times so crisis exerted with the Komodo, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the cool hoodies and for sure Scotland is pretty photogenic, it’s just a downside that it’s consumed by rain 90% of the year haha if you ever find yourself over here I will go well out of my way to drive you to some incredible shooting locations! Thanks again!

    What about custom frame rates? For example, if I set the project playback frame to 25fps and want to shoot TV commercial at 33fps? I hope this is possible?!?

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому +1

      Available frame rates currently are:
      40 FPS AT 6K 17:9 (6144 X 3240)
      50 FPS AT 6K 2.4:1 (6144 X 2592)
      48 FPS AT 5K 17:9 (5120 X 2700)
      60 FPS AT 4K 17:9 (4096 X 2160)
      120 FPS AT 2K 17:9 (2048 X 1080)
      So you can shoot at any of those above. No 33fps as in your example as you can see.
      As for playback rates you can choose 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, 60 FPS.
      But these are just "project" timeline rates... Your video still gets saved at FPS you shoot at, but plays at playback rate... Once you are in your NLE you can drop your 40fps and 120fps footage into whatever timeline rate you wish and speed up or slow down as desired.
      So if you shoot @ 120FPS - and save at 25fps you'll get 4.8x slow motion. But you can put that 120fps into a 40fps timeline once you are editing on computer, and get 3x slow motion.
      At least that's how I understand it and my experience with it :)
      Though in reality - and I'll make another video on this soon - while this cam has 120fps, due to it's crop in 2k required to shoot at this rate - the image gets a bit more noisy and needs more light ...
      I prefer to shoot at 6K 40 or 5K 48 - and then I can get 2x beautiful clear slow-mo and speed ramps. 120fps imho is a bit of a gimmick on this camera due to noise, etc.
      Pozdrav...

  • @VideoByPatrick
    @VideoByPatrick 3 роки тому

    Very important info you noted regarding Komodo matching shooting fps to playback fps, so I can actually shoot at 29.97 but only if I first select playback at 29.97 as shooting fps scroll menu doesn't allow selecting 29.97 ? right ? Please explain why you use 180 degrees for shooting video "not stills".

    • @stevenchase1
      @stevenchase1 3 роки тому

      180 degree shutter gives you a pleasing "natural" motion blur that is similar to the human eye. on stills, you most likely don't want that motion blur.

    How often should I do black shade calibration on the camera ? Before every shoot ? Or how

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому +1

      As soon as you get the camera, once it warms up to operating temp you should calibrate.
      If temp changes +/- 15 degrees (C) or +/- 30 degrees (F). For example, if you calibrated at home in ambient temp of 68F and you go outside and it's freezing (30F) or super hot (100F) - then you should re-calibrate on-location - but always once camera warms up after say 5 min or so (not right after booting).
      Finally, if your image is very noisy, or you have "hot" pixels in footage (which a lot of people think are "dead" pixels at times) - you should recalibrate.
      Lastly - whenever you upgrade firmware, you should recalibrate.
      Here's a good article from RED as to why this is important: www.red.com/red-101/black-shading-calibration ... In short - it re-maps noise properly so it knows how to subtract it from the image.

      You can save your file as 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 50, 59.94, 60 FPS in ALL Resolutions. That’s the project time base. Especially 23.98 is possible. That’s what I shoot at by default.

    I have a question. at 4K 60Fps it is without crop ?

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому +1

      Yes that is the case. All RED cameras crop (window down) on the sensor when shooting lower res than max. You can see the crop factors in my other video here (Direct link to 24:40 time stamp: ua-cam.com/video/xeESVZ-Tokw/v-deo.html) ... I should mention. If you shoot in ProRes in 6k - it’ll use whole sensor but you’ll get 4K video without crop. In this case however you just can’t do 60fps but 40.

    Can you keep it in 24FPS in the Project Time base while changing the frame rate above? This way in post all your footage is in 24FPS though while recording you might have higher frame rates ( Slow Mo ) I'm thinking about using this for weddings and want to switch from 24FPS to 60FPS ( Slow Mo ) then upload all the footage in 24FPS. Thank You for the in-depth review!!!

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому

      Yes. Project can always be 24 and as I understand it that is the exact use of it. Slow motion. Just keep in mind that for now Komodo won’t record sound unless the recording time rate and project time rate are identical. That’s when Recording frame rate shows up in Yellow color instead of white.
      Komodo manual, which is available on line I believe, explains which resolutions support sound, however, I’ve long ago asked for a feature to record sound as a separate file no matter that speed were shooting at. I was told that was coming in future updates.

    Just amazing video Silfen! I really think Red should sponsor you for all this work :-)
    One question though plz, about the Prores setting: Even though i understood the 4k under Prores is downscaled (not cropped) from the 6k sensor, should we conclude the same for the Prores 2k @120fps?
    Since 120fps is way too cropped under RedRaw format, i guess the only use of switching to Prores would be to get 120fps videos without any crop...So would love to get your confirmation about this if possible! THX

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks. Yea, it would be nice if they did. As for ProRes, I just tested for you. As expected (by me, though not by you) - when shooting in anything lower than 6k (i.e. 2k you requested) Komodo will crop the image even in ProRes ... So when shooting 6k but saving in ProRes - you'll get 4k image (6k downscaled to 4k with no crop)... But if you shoot in anything under 6k - you get what you shoot at even in ProRes... So 4k will give you 4k (cropped). 2k will give you 2k cropped... In all honestly - I personally do not believe Komodo is an amazing cam for Slow Motion... You have to feed it a lot more light, and since it does crop in, even though it can shoot in RAW image is just not that amazing... 6k, 5k, 5k though - beautiful stuff ... Will try to showcase all these modes in upcoming video.

    • @nightmusic1974
      @nightmusic1974 3 роки тому

      Well i guess i have a clear answer now, thanks to you Silfen!
      The Komodo manual wasnt even clear about this, so you just hit the point...i was hoping for a workaround to this cropping, but now i can conclude that the Komodo isnt a slomo camera indeed, at least with actual firmware.
      So, for people like me who cant afford more than a Komodo under the Red territory, finding a more affordable but more efficient slowmo BCam is the point.
      Anyway, making a video about the resolution modes in the Komodo would be great from you indeed! 👍🏻

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому +1

      Yes. Will do. It’s planned :) As for RED - they all crop in lower Rez/higher speed.
      Red Ravens are nowadays going for as much (or less) than a new Komodo. They are bigger, slower, but may have the red/FPS you need. But imho - A7S3 may be better bet for ya. Or chunky C70?

    • @nightmusic1974
      @nightmusic1974 3 роки тому

      That’s nice from you Silfen to share further advices here :-)
      Indeed the Komodo could be used as a B cam for a Raven for ex., which btw i didnt know was as cheap these days! Anyway that’s how the Komodo was conceived i believe, as a crash cam for bigger red cameras setup, so this option makes sense indeed.
      But what Red probably didnt plan with the Komodo is that it will also attract lower budget shooters who may consider the Komodo as an A cam instead- people who are right in the middle of documentary, B-Rolls and storytelling filmic segments.Then you are right, C70 or A7S3 may be the solution in such case.
      But at the end of the day, probably the main challenge is not only to get lightweight stuff, but also the need of matching both cams colorwise on editing, which probably requires same 6k and raw capabilities...Which seem to lead to only one last option...the Blackmagic one (which i had completely put aside)
      That being said, i can see some 50/60fps footages of the Komodo available on the net which look cool, so maybe it’s only the 120fps which is really unusuable...Or if you said so, the sensor doesnt take enough light for efficient slomo in most situations, which means even 60p doesnt really make it...So many questions involved.
      Anyway, again big thank you for all your efforts in helping the shooters community with your youtube channel...real users like you definitively help us to save precious time! (and certainly $$!)

      Glad I can help. I’d note I’m not an expert by any means. Much more capable people in this field out there but I share what I can.
      Just don’t forget something no other camera out there has - global shutter at 6k 40fps. Komodo blows most other cameras out of the water but when you use it in full 6k or down to 4K tops. All else to me is a gimmick. I always shoot in 6k. But even 5k 48fps and 4K at 60fps is still more than most need. 2-2.5x slow mo is plenty. Great Rez with room to crop In post or stabilize + RED RAW quality. While I wish it could do everything else even mirrorless cameras do nowadays it Packs so much in the footprint that it’s almost rude to ask for more :) I love mine :)

      Ha. I did and accidentally overwrote it. It is easy though. Download firmware zip file. Extract it. It will have “upgrade” folder with the firmware binary inside. Just drag the whole upgrade folder to your CFast card. Then on Komodo head to Maintenance / Firmware upgrade and hit ok.
      Key is that you copy the upgrade folder. Not just the file onto your media.
      Hope this helps. But video is coming up shortly. I have to re record it :)

    Shouldn't the frequency be set to 50 hz if you are in PAL region and 60 for NTSC at all time even when you're shooting in 23.98?

    • @SilfenPath
      @SilfenPath  3 роки тому +1

      Which "frequency" are you referring to? If you can provide me with a time-stamp I can better answer this question. There is a setting for frequency of the SDI display (which has nothing to do with recording and it's dependent on what display you attach to Komodo), and there are Project Settings where you set the Format, Frame Rate you will record at, and playback speed. If latter - yes, usually for PAL-world you'd want things that are like 24 or 25, 50, 60, etc. But in NTSC-world, we do the skip-frame mostly 23.98, 59.94 etc. It mostly depends on your deliverable (what market it is for), but you gotta take care if you are also trying to Sync audio with some other gear - as those should be set to same rate, otherwise you may have issues in post.

      I see it as just a way to get better slow motion on cameras which can’t always record at the highest frame rate you set them to. Others use is to save on file size.
      Komodo already shoots in every resolution as fast as it can. ASIC simply can’t push more pixels, especially with global shutter.
