not really i used snapchat filters in all of my early teenage years and thought i was actually pretty but when i looked at myself in the mirror and photos without filters I couldn't accept that im really ugly. so i dont think expectations really work it will just affect your perception of yourself and then mess up your mental health when that perception fades for some reason

There's a huge class aspect to this that shouldn't be forgotten. In France, english-sounding names like Kevin, Jordan, Steven, Jessica, Beverly, etc are usually associated with being stupid. The reason behind this is that these names are usually given by poorer parents to their kids, usually because working class moms in the 80s and 90s were often fans of cheesy american tv shows where the protagonists had those names.
Of course, kids with those names are not stupid, at least not all of them. However, studies have found that Kevins, for example, had the lowest grades in the country and were the least likely to graduate. Unfortunately, since class is usually linked to how well you do in school, and since your name is basically a class "tag", people will be quick to judge your intelligence and your success based on the name you were given.

Another possible theory is that, certain parents who look a certain way may have the tendency to prefer certain names for their child. For example, a goofy and simple parent who is average looking and doesn't care too much about their attractiveness may give their child some generic names like Bob or Dan. Then their child will inherit their parents looks.

Fun fact : In Indonesia if a baby who is just born got sick, sometimes we would consider that the name is "too heavy" for the child and need to be changed. Funnily enough after the renaming the baby would be cured. Everytime I heard it from friends' experience, I would look at my friend's face and think, no, I can't imagine them being named by their former name. When I joined the military, I had to get used to being called by my last name. It was strange at first, but then as I got used it, it started feeling like separate personalities. Ultimately, I was able to put on and take off the military mindset with the name and uniform.

This reminds of this one day 8 years ago, when an entire class, including myself, thought this one girl was named Mitchy. This girl never said what her name was, but everyone just assumed her name was Mitchy. When a student called her by the name Mitchy, we were all shocked to learn her name was actually Elizabeth, and we didn't think it matched how she looked, it seemed off. But then she explained that she prefers to go by Lizzy, and we all agreed that matched her face a lot more. I don't know, it still amazes me how everyone thought she looked like a Mitchy. Needless to say Lizzy was very confused that day.

I give my book characters far out names to bypass the stereotypical imagined faces that names create in a reader’s mind. I like to think it makes my readers pay more attention to the character descriptions or that they becoming more aware that they might be bias based on what they’ve always assumed about the protagonist, antagonist or other characters in stories.
I do the same too without realizing it. I want my characters to have names that gives depth to them or, the opposite of who they are. It’s fun. This video gave me a good insight!
I think meaning of a name also plays a big role. My parents named me Shahad (meaning honey), and told me the meaning of my name quite early on. Growing up I found myself striving to be as nice and sweet as possible, so that my personality would reflect my name. Even if there were people I originally disliked. I had the tendency to go that extra mile just to make sure they liked me.

Growing up in Japan as an Andrew pronounced Andoryuu, I've noticed a difference not only in the facial muscles used when I speak Japanese vs English, but also changes in my countenance and personality depending on the language I'm conversing in. Same here, when I lived in Taiwan my name was Mina which sounds cuter than my English name. My Chinese speaking friends often consider me to have a cute personality whereas my American friends wouldn't describe my personality as cute, I think language can make a difference in personality as well as name.

In my country (Indonesia), sometimes parents change their child's name because of 'keberatan nama'. It basically means the name carries too much burden to the name owner. Parents change their child's name when their child constantly sick. She didnt like it. I believe a child has a right to be called by their given name and not a name 'given' by someone else. The other Melanie had some developmental issue and the teacher felt drawn to help her. My daughter had no issues til the name Mel stuck. The kids teased her about her 'boy' name. I knew it wud happen. Well what came next?? A child that was confident and really pretty turned inward. Then came the child that felt she wasnt accepted very well by her peers. No dear, not ok to change someone's name bc u the teacher isnt sharp enough to keep things straight.

This is fascinating! I’ve never met anyone with my name, but my parents did make an effort to spell it in a way that would make it easiest to pronounce. People still get it wrong more than half the time. I do tend more toward neuroticism, and I haven’t ever felt like I quite fit in, even though I’m generally socially accepted. I’ve actually usually felt that people found me more memorable in a positive way because my name was different.
I’ve been serious about skin care, especially sun protection, all my adult life. People assume that I’m younger than my chronological age because of the lack of sun damage to my skin. Sometimes I make a joke about how I have a portrait in my attic that looks horrible....and nobody gets it. So....Thanks for mentioning "The Picture of Dorian Gray."

I wear brimmed hats outside when I can. And I stopped smoking at the age of 29. Hadn’t been a heavy smoker anyway, but I feared those fine nicotine wrinkles far more than lung cancer!

I've also noticed that your pets also start looking like you and you look like them. Maybe its the personality or vibes and connection you have with your pet determines that. I even noticed that spouses/partners over a long period of time also start looking like each other. Not necessarily looking like each other but very subliminally, like the overall face shape, eyes etc, though it could vary and dosent necessarily always have to be this case. You can test this out on your grandparents or something too or couples but obviously some time to their marriage has to be lived to be able to observe this.

Like, if you're repeated told you are born a "Scorpio" or a "Leo" or "Zebra" or whatever, because of a superstitious belief system that assigns personal expectations and fortunes to people based on a relative view of distant planets and imagined symbolic shapes drawn between stars as seen from Earth on our birthday.... this can actually influence how you think of yourself and how your personality develops, and informs conscious choices too the more you buy into the (in this case baseless) stereotype.

In my opinion a good smile has to do a lot with the expression of the eyes because they mostly show ones true emotions,
less than with what your teeth look like
For example if someone has a cold look in their eyes and smiles it seems kinda weird and creepy
The smile suddenly doesn't match their actual emotion and it feels off suddenly making them seem less sympathetic

In the last year of middle school, I was transferred to a different one, where there weren't any "Giovana"s. Then, as there I was perceived as differently, I behaved differently. Idk, I actually don't think I look like my name. Some people say I look like a Pamela.

So interesting! I remember wondering about the significance of names and the effect they can have on an individual. When hearing peoples names I often think, they look like that name but also there are times when I see someone and I think, they don't look like their name (whatever that means). Sometimes there are really beautiful unusual looking people with a generic name and sometimes there are plain looking people with really unique names.
I never felt an emotional connection to my name. Two former boyfriends apparently felt the same and said my name didn’t fit me....so much so, that they independently gave me names that better fit me (in their opinions).

I completely get the weird-name and spelling thing. I had a different spelling of an uncommon name, and I have severe anxiety. Since changing it to something a lot easier, I do feel like my confidence has gone up when having to say my name.

Crazy how this works, my parents actually named my sister after someone solely because they thought she was beautiful (Vanessa Williams btw and they're not wrong she's gorgeous) so she subconsciously always keeps up her appearance where as I'm named after both of my grandmothers and not only so I look weirdly like both of them but I just happen to have a lot of their same interests and taste in things
A unique name can have its perks, I worked in a call centre for a grocery store and there was a lady who called in each week to make orders. She said I was the only advisor she remembered because of my name and was always really nice to me 😂
