I think Instagram Face has been heavily influenced by how attractive mixed race people are seen to be. Instagram face is characterized by the racial ambiguity of tan skin, light eyes, a small nose, and full lips. This look is common in women of multiple races and I think it’s become such a loved look because all races are able to find it attractive.

I feel like the fact that being mixed race isn’t so common is what adds to the attractiveness. They benefit from their exoticness. We’re more likely to find interest in something that we’ve never seen before compared to some thing that we already have. If being mixed race was a commonality, these studies would look different.

as a Brazilian thank you for putting up that note saying you understand all of these Brazilian beauties are very "white-passing". However, I'd just like to note that none of the ones you showed in this video here in Brazil are considered mixed, except for aline. We have a very different view on ethnicity and race in which basically what you look like is what you are (clearly very rooted in racism and colorism where if you look white that's what you'll say you are because its "better"), so much so that we created a category for mixed people here called pardos, which means that if you're not white enough to be considered white or black enough to be considered black you're pardo. Also, it's very unlikely for Brazilians to know their ancestry even more so because there is not a clear line between the ethnicities that were mixed, thanks to years of this miscegenation process. So, it's always interesting for me to see what people in countries in North America and Europe see as mixed at first sight in comparison to us, especially when it comes to white people.
*let me just clarify a few things I wrote here because I might have written it in a way that seems to mix a few terminologies.
    1) Race is a social construct based on phenotypes. In Brazil what I've noticed is that even for phenotypes we have different standards to what may be white or black or mixed specifically (because those are the most common ones here) when in comparison to other countries especially the ones in Europe and North America such as USA and Canada.
    2) Ethnicity not only has to do with your DNA but also your culture and your history, and in Brazil that is also often harder to know because we are so mixed and a lot of the time have no idea about our true background.

    • @GabrielMemes

I have a one biracial grandmother, but I am dark skinned and have West African features, I might as well be considered pure black. My friend is from South Carolina, where the people there are actually the "purest" African Americans, people from that region are called Gullah/Geechee and are African slaves that made their own community and are not mixed like other African Americans. They have very velvety dark skin. So my friend is REALLY not mixed.
My friend and I often get asked if we're mixed race, though. Why is that? We are both very dark skinned.
I dont want to sound conceited, but there is this notion that pretty=mixed. I will say my friend is strikingly gorgeous and as about as dark and unmixed as one can get. So if someone is pretty, they can't be just one race (and they especially can't be pure black 🙄).

Even I double take when I see someone with very dark skin (even though I am dark skinned myself) and especially when they are beautiful, it is very striking, because you just don't see dark skin as often.
Not to sound conceited, but I was talking with two people once, and one asked if I was mixed. The other person noticed my weird expression and spoke for her friend and said, she's just trying to say that you're pretty. Why do I have to be mixed to be pretty? I don't even look mixed.
I had an old white guy who was an artist and photographer look at me and tell me that people with lighter hair or lighter skin are not necessarily more attractive in their facial features, but the human eye is just drawn to light.
I had someone white say to my face that mixed people look better than everyone else. Kind of a wack thing to say lol. This is an notion especially held among black people (and South Asian people, any race where the skin is darker)...it's a very odd, and ugly thing. If you know, you know. People who like to put people in race boxes get confused as to what race people there are and it seems so many people have different answers, nobody says white for some reason thought when in my eyes lots of people there have lots of white features too but anyway. So basically what's "preferred" is mayo with a shot of Sriracha? Most of the mixed race celebrities shown and celebrated for their beauty are white or almost white passing. They have a certain, exotic "je ne sais quoi" that makes them interesting to viewers steeped in Euro-centric beauty standards but they don't stray too far into non-whiteness to become "Other". What I find concerning as well is that mixed celebrities that tend to favor the non-White parent are pushed forward in media as representatives of their racial group, see: Henry Golding as everyone's favourite "Asian leading man" or the countless number of mixed race Black actresses that are cast in monoracial Black roles. I'm not talking about a 5% or 10% difference in your perceived attractiveness we're talking about some numbers being as high as 47% higher!
To me, that's just crazy! These are all people with the same photos, it's just that in one profile it says they're, for example, Asian. In the other profile, they say that they're Asian mixed with white. And these results proved consistant across all races. . . Anyway Qoves Studios I just wanted to say the data supports this video.

I’m from the Middle East and I’ve noticed that, because having mixed ancestry is very common, many people tend to favour pure European genes (especially blonde hair and blue eyes) or pure East Asian genes. Some of my South American friends say that it’s the same in their countries, most because being mixed-race is so common that you’re “exotic” if you’re not mixed. Ok I have so many thoughts on this and I feel you could probably make a part 2 honestly! But I believe there is likely a combination of factors at play here, most of which you have discussed but the studies for this specific topic do not really address. So we know averageness is correlated with attractiveness. Well it stands to reason that a mixed race face is just more likely to be more average. Let’s take the most common mix (the two who happen to be most physically different in my opinion as well), European and African descent. You mix the one person- fair skin, straight blonde hair, light eyes, very sharp features- and another person- dark skin, coily black hair, darkest brown eyes, very full features. If the two of them share a child, we are likely to see a person with tan skin, looser curls, lighter brown or hazel eyes, and more average features (nose protrudes some but not much, somewhat rounded; lips are medium fullness). Now each of the people I described could all be gorgeous, both parents and the offspring rated perfect 10s by all. But the offspring has more going for them when it comes to attractiveness- 1) EXOTICISM, to catch our attention 2) FAMILIARITY, which will draw in more types of people and 3) AVERAGENESS, which adds to objective beauty. Then there’s the biological science behind the heterozygosity and symmetry. Not to mention some negative factors like fetishization, racism (and the other prejudices that fall under it- colorism, classism, etc), and the effect our society/social media has.

  • @shami5enwow
    @shami5enwow 2 роки тому +12

I think people like to see what they consider their races most attractive features combined with other races most attractive features.
There is a set of twins that are kind of famous and they are both 1/4 Black and 3/4 European but labeled as 'one black twin and one white twin' the main difference between them is skin color, hair color, and hair texture. The 'black twin' is kind of like the Halle Barry looking 'ideal' and is rated by people as far more attractive than the 'white twin' who has stronger African facial features, but has fair skin and hair color. Some even go as far to say that she's unattractive or 'weird looking'.
My opinion is that the 'black twin' has the features deemed more desirable of both races with Caucasian-esque facial features, caramel skin (a bronze tan to white people and 'light skin' to Black people), a curvy body type, full lips, and hair that is not 'kinky' but curly and with volume.
Meanwhile the 'white twin' has features of both races that are deemed less desirable...African facial features, pale skin (the kind of pale associated with being sickly looking), thin lips, skinny not very curvaceous body, and thin hair.
That sounds really harsh tbh, I'm not trying to say that these features are objectively undesirable, but this is something I have noticed. 'Black fishers' don't try to emulate a 4c hair texture or African nose shape, nor are Asian women trying to make their noses look big and prominent, or their lips thin.
I can easily list the most desired traits from each race..
Black- Fullness of lips, curvaceous body type
White- Various hair and eye colors
    Asian- Neoteny, thick straight hair
    Native American/Indigenous- Cheekbones, hair texture
Also to note too, a lot of things Qoves said about society and the idea that more Caucasian features could boost attractiveness. Something I would like to note as well is that people kind of instinctively go for what they think they can pull off more. Kim Kardashian has never had naturally fair skin or light hair. She would dissatisfied if she went after a more White looking ideal like Brittney Spears or Paris Hilton.

11:58 "Why do African-Americans, 90% of whom have at least one white ancestor, outperform Blacks from African nations in every sport except long distance running? Could it be because of their mixed-race ancestry?"
Well if that's not a reach, then I don't know what it is.
I'm pretty sure it's because African countries either do not invest in sports as much as the United States of America, nor do not have the means to get top sport infrastructures as the USA's, nor do not value much a lot of sports where you can see a lot of Black people as much as the USA's.
And also, maybe it is better to include a lot more variables on the table when we want to speak about the probability of seeing mixed-race people in sports. Maybe the variable 'money'/'income of the parents' or the variable 'network of the parents', or 'mixed couple rate' or 'quality/performance of a mixed-race couple' or 'well-being of a mixed-race child with two different ethnics parents', etc.
I think that explaining performance and probability to mixed-race/bi-or-multiracial people is reducting the possibility of variables at best, and going into a dangerous slippery slope at worst...

It's an oddity still but when everyone becomes largely mixed-race then maybe people will find persons who are not mixed as being the most attractive. People like attractive to oddities, when everyone was skinny people wanted to be plump when everyone became fat everyone wants to be skinny when people had to work outside and were tan they wanted to be pale when everyone works inside and is pale people want to be tan etc. Everything has its cycle and time. However, most of the mixed people who are rated as the most attractive are typically very white-passing ones it's rarely mixed people who look of African descent, Asian or native descent also that's quite telling.

I don't know what Isabeli Fontana, Gisele Bündchen and Alessandra Ambrósio (maybe Ana Beatriz Barros too) are doing in a mixed race video. Most Brazilian models from the 90s and 2000s are not mixed at all. Adriana is, but you honestly couldn't tell most of the time, which shows that the modeling industry was barely accepting mixed features (I also suspect she does not have Swiss and Japanese ancestry, but I am not sure). And lastly, Portuguese being the 5th most spoken European language in the world, I would hardly call it "marginal".

    • @luisa7270

I am not going to stretch this because only a DNA test or further inspection could give us an answer, but saying they are mixed just because they are Brazilian is not strong enough. If they are mixed, it's a very, very small percentage. Isabeli has stated she is, and I quote, "of European origin", Italian and Portuguese. Gisele has said she's German from her mother's and father's side just like most people in her town a number of times. Alessandra's family shows records of Polish and Italian immigrants, maybe Portuguese. I just say this because putting genetically European people in a mixed race video and calling them “white passing” just because of their nationality is just funny to me. This was a great opportunity to use accurate examples such as Laís Ribeiro, Luma Grothe and Daniela Braga (if I’m not mistaken about them).
