I got shocked when I re-watched a TV show that I loved as a child because the girl that I thought were absolutely gorgeous now just seems sooo normal to me. Then I realized we've been kinda brain washed with the edited appearance of people these days.

But here's my take, Margot has these physical traits:
Tall, slim, great figure, button nose, beautiful eyes, nice eyebrows, nice jawline, good cheekbones, symmetrical face, nice teeth and smile. Which a lot of people do not have. So for me she is still above the rest.
Those men are -5/10 if they're calling her mid.

oh and that one viral podcast clip probably played a big part too. One guy in it said that he went to Russia or Ukraine (i dont remember) and that women over there on average are way more attractive than in the US, so he made the comment that even someone like Margot Robbie will be considered mid or 4/10 when compared to those women.
When I first saw her I was stunned by her beauty. Strangely the more I look at her the more "mid" she is, maybe my face pool is richer nowadays so that I appreciate attractive people who are not blonde and blue-eyed.
Also seeing an attractive person irl definitely has a stronger reaction, so if you're losing that sense of beauty around you, you are not even truly benefitting because undoubtedly seeing a photo of a beautiful person is not NEARLY as exciting for the brain. I think that this is a total negative for the general population.
can confirm this as a male with fairly exotic looking face, blue eyes that are bit upward turn, dark hair, very prominent cheekbones, strong jawline etc. dating apps not that much luck really. IRL the reactions are quite fun sometimes, and people definitely look in a way. also now that im actually in very very good shape, it probably adds to that phenomen. i remember people looking me and my ex girlfriend quite a lot in the past. she had also very prominent cheekbones and strong facial features, quite tall for a woman and she had and still probaly has nice body :D. I didnt back then lol.

When I look all the retouched model pictures online it starts to feel normal to look THAT way and when I look at myself in the mirror something feels wrong about my appearance. But the more I am just out with regular people the more I feel good about the way I look. Also I noticed no one else seems to be holding me to the standard that I was for myself when being over exposed to these images.

The more I look in the mirror the more I feel okay about my looks. Not looking in the mirror and seeing all the manipulated bodies and then quickly looking at mine will make me feel not human and my brain registers different slopes and skeletal landmarks. Like what they call violin hips and hip dips. I have to take time to wiggle around and see that they have just made poses erasing those landmarks. Bending forward erases hip dips and gives the uninterrupted curves. Standing straight they are noticeable and standing tensing your legs make them very pronounced. It is all tricks.

Yes, like there was a girl in my class that when I thought that she would be insufferable I thought she was just an average girl who had a boring face, but when I started to talk with her and found out that she actually had a really good heart, was a smart and mature girl I started to find her really pretty. Personality counts more than people actually think about atracction.

I used to think this was pure feel good b.s back in the day. But over time, I have to say that you're right. Someone on the cusp of average cute suddenly becomes attractive to me once they factor in values, vibe, personality and combinations of such.
Ironically, models who are paid to be at peak attractiveness, are some of the most insecure people one can encounter. It’s because of this very thing. I used to model a bit when I was younger and it definitely messed with my mental health. My friends who were the most successful in their careers were no better off mentally. Now I don’t gaf about fashion or whatever. I dress for myself. My confidence must be attractive cuz even though I’m practically middle aged now, I get more attention than ever. Confidence is key and also staying away from social media as much as u can. Meet people irl, get some sun, have real conversations face to face, touch grass and we’ll all be ok.

Men want them for one thing and that is all. And there are average to ugly women who men are always falling in love with. Social confidence is to be positively regarded by strangers. What Paule seems to call "confidence" is actually self-esteem and inner strength. If you can be a 3 in looks but judge yourself not as the world judges you, based on one thing, but as a whole person with various positive traits and abilities other then appearance. In that case you will not internalize the negative perception of those who do not know you well enough to judge you in your entirety.. Maturity tends to increase this kind of "confidence" because you know who you are and have developed knowledge about yourself. Also Mr Virus I guess you might be aware that society beating you down for being ugly the way you describe happens most in middle school. If you get out of middle school without this happening to you then you will always be more confident in others.

I grew up in the 70s and for a long time I thought 'Gosh people were uglier then' - no, now people have botox, fillers, veneers in real life - and online is a totally different story with photoshop and even AI images. But you only need to walk along any average high street and you will see beautiful people are actually in the minority (in UK anyway).
I grew up in the 70s and didn't find that to be true..Many young women had natural beauty..they weren't wearing loads of makeup, and what I hear from many men they preferred them that way.

I’m from the UK, and live in Romania. People in Romania are significantly more beautiful than people in the UK. The capital Bucharest has a particularly high density of above average looking women. They make effort here, whereas my experience of towns in the UK is that people dress sloppily, they hunch. and are often overweight.
Yet when you look at film stars from the 40/s50s60s they seemed to be a lot better looking than now
When it comes to women the UK and Germany are bad examples cause they're famous across Europe to have the ugliest (and most neglected, worst dressed, etc.) populations in the entire subcontinent, and that if you see someone good looking 9/10 times it's an immigrant or a descendant of at least somewhat recent immigrants (like, up to a grandparent level or so) lol especially Germany has the worst reputation but the UK is in the 2nd place and then Nordic and Benelux countries in the 3rd, but there's still a huge gap between them and the UK. Men, however, the perception seems to be very different. Nordic men are usually considered at the top, and the UK/German/Benelux men are maybe not very high ranking, but usually higher than countries that typically are considered to have beautiful women (Slavic and Romance countries mainly as far as Europe goes, though with Romance countries if it's Spain/Portugal/Italy then again their men are also typically considered attractive, often more than the ones from Germanic countries)...
But this has a LOT to do with fashion, and when I say that I also mean fashion for certain phenotypes and body types that people often tend to miss that these exist when talking about beauty standards..
I think whats even rarer and stops people in their tracks is yes, beauty in real life, but unique beauty. Its clear to see that people are chasing a similar 'look' these days with regard to makeup style, small nose, almond eyes but strong cheekbones. The more people aim to look alike to fit a certain standard, the more unique and less 'boring' others look. It may sound a dream to have others stutter or stop in their tracks at your beauty, but thats only if you're confident and like a bit of attention. Im a very shy person and it honestly is distressing to have 15 people stare at me as I walk down a street. This is an aspect to beauty that I dont think anyone talks about.

Doe eyes have higher visual weight which is much more striking and readable from a distance compared to almond eyes.

@@dijoxx I should clarify that I’m referring to a unique or otherworldly beauty, and not just an attractive person. I’ve been attracted to average people. Mainly referring to social media creating a false beauty narrative because people can easily edit their photos and only share flattering photos. Also, a lot of people get plastic surgery today. I don’t really mind as long as people are honest about it. I self admittedly used to edit my photos when I was a teen until I realized it actually made me look weird as hell.

There's this model I follow on Instagram, I used to think she was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. I was awe struck! As a young woman it was a first for ne to be that struck by another woman's beauty. Fast forward years later, with more influencers and models on Instagram now, I found myself less struck by her beauty now. She's still the same, she's barely aged and is now in her late 20's but somehow my reaction to her face changed. I wondered why since she's still the same as she was when I first saw. Watching this video explains alot.
This reminds of my 16 year old self who was in awe for ulzzang pictures, now if you look them up you immediately recognize that they are totally photoshopped. 😅😂

So many times i've heard someone very average or under the average say beautiful people "all look boring and the same" basically calling them average but really I think it just shows how much that (below)average person stares or seeks out beautiful people in their day to day life. Its really a bit silly.
HA, I swear I see this so much, especially if it's someone that's done something that isn't deemed morally correct. The first thing they attack is their looks.
A lot of beautiful people do look similar. That's why we're more drawn to striking features as per the video such as Miranda Kerr (her nose), Robert Pattinson (eyes and jaw) and Taylor Hill (jaw). My favorite model personally is Hannah Kleit. I think she has very striking eyes and a unique mouth shape that draws my attention in a way that other models don't. Someone like Adriana Lima is extremely beautiful, but her features aren't very interesting. Nothing really stands out as unique. I prefer Taylor Hill over her because Taylor has a very unique, masculine jaw that is very captivating. As humans we seek novelty for pleasure and because we see so many beautiful people on a daily basis we get bored of conventional beauty. It's not because conventional beauty is boring, it's because the excitement has worn off. We've all stared at thousands of conventionally beautiful people so the dopamine signaling isn't as strong as it once was. It's the same reason why fashion changes every year. The clothes people used to enjoy and pay hundreds of dollars for now seem boring and unoriginal. We simply grow accustomed to certain trends over time. In the 90s "Heroin Chic" was the name of the game and now in the 2020s it's "SlimThick". Eventually skinny will come back into fashion once the culture becomes bored of voluptuous bodies. Superhero movies are starting to die out now because people have become bored of watching so many superhero movies and tv shows. Zombie movies used to be extremely popular too and then they died out because we had been inundated with too many. The market became oversaturated. This is just how trends are, we crave novelty. It's why men will cheat on gorgeous women with women who are less attractive. It's new and it's different, therefore it's exciting

@calfagra don't bother with braindead people. Of course the most beautiful time for living beings are their youth. Imo, around 20-30 for women and 25-35 for men. But of course the rate of deterioration is different for different people depending on their genes and maintenance. If we look at Hollywood celebrities our perception that beauty stay unchanging is of course skewed. But that require constant effort and plenty of wealth.

I would consider NY 10 to be modelesque skinny high cheekbones high fashion old money kind of look. Clean, minimal beauty look, if you get work done it’s “natural looking” almost as if she’s born with it vibe. Think quiet, sleek, understated luxury Think Bella Hadid types.
MIA 10 is like Latina beauty standards. So tan curvaceous, BBL. Loud fashion. Colorful and more ethnic influence (not in a negative way!) lashes nails DONE. Think Kim Khardashian or Kylie Jenner body types, Sofia Vergara style and also body tbh etc
LA 10 is a combo of the two above. Beach babe body, curvy but not overly curvy. Blonde hair (dyed if not natural), high key brands, you want to flex your everything car house bag etc. but I wouldn’t say it’s as loud and flashy as MIA is. Plastic surgery can look obvious or semi obvious but it isn’t going to be as subdued as NY. I would say the whole IG baddie look originated from here. Depending where you go it can be a Gigi Hadid, Kate Upton type, like sports illustrated model or VS model type. Or khardashian ig baddie types. I would say MIA and LA is similar and distinct in direct comparison to NY 10.

Even just two hundred years ago, the average human being, would see one exceptionally beautiful woman or man in their lifetime. Let alone a perfectly groomed, rich and famous beauty.
It explains why artists had muses, why people lost themselves to a single man or woman. Because they were not constantly confronted by a sea of bigger, better, more colourful eye-candies.
This doesn't just apply to the internet, but to real life as well. If you join a college coed athletic club and spend time around attractive and fit people of the opposite sex, you start to judge nonathletes as substandard. I can't get over how many overweight people there are in the world outside of the athletic sphere.
I was thinking something similar happens when you're educated in a high class surrounding because beauty is also, in a way, a type of currency, and many rich people tend to be more attractive (especially if this has been going on for multiple generations) because rich men seek attractive women as a status symbol, and attractive women are oftentimes put in privileged positions because of their beauty where they end up meeting these men. Their children end up being pretty, and when this happens for a while, you have upper classes that have "hoarded beauty". If you grow up around these people it doesn't seem as exceptional to you anymore. It's really interesting to be in that situation when you're not part of it because when you go back in the real world, you're aware that your perception was completely skewed.

It is a status symbol only in the fact that attractive women are generally desirable and sought for, so there's a lot of competition, and being rich gives you an advantage. Being rich, or at least, not being to poor allows you to do things things necessary to stay attractive, like work out, maintain a healthy weight, do yoga, participate in sports and recreation, wear makeup, nice clothes, etc. People who are poor are stuck in their jobs not being able to do those things. Landlords ask for proof of income or assets in order to allow tenants to rent. On the other hand, there are wealthy people that squander their opportunity and live lazily.
I wouldn't say one situation is the real world and the other is not. They're both real, but experienced by different people. It just so happens that there are a lot more people who aren't rich compared to the amount of people who are. You may experience different situations depending on where you are in the world and in life. Some people spend their lives at sea and that is their normal. Other spend their lives hiking and camping. Some people live in suburbs, others in metropolitan areas, and yet others in rural farmlands.
Omg I constantly stay around really good artists and I always feel my own pieces suck in comparison. Probably they are just average paintings, not the dead bottom as I perceive them...

You need to find the beauty in simplicity. Think of cute instead of stunning. Even “cute” animals look a bit odd when you look closely.
Realistic filters made this issue worse because when people saw textured skin on photos and videos, they were shocked. If you told them that those attractive people on social media have filters, they would think you're jealous, even if it's common and obvious.
I've noticed you often use pictures of attractive people when speaking about average looking people (not in the averageness sense, but in the 5 out of 10 sense). I find this confusing and I think the audience would benefit if you also showcase what is average looking (again in the 5 out of 10 sense), what is lower, what is higher but not a 10 etc.

Like visuals were laid out first in the editor then a voiceover was placed with them based on nothing but their usual editing style/template. I remember watching a movie when I was a kid and thinking a peasant woman looked angelic, and when I watched it again as an adult, the woman looked completely unremarkable, even "ugly". Because I could remember what I thought of her as a child, it really pointed out to me how society has brainwashed my perception of beauty. There have also been times that I felt pretty... up until I went to the mall and saw all of the advertising with specific features, which I do not have, being held up as the standard of beauty. Then I just felt bad about myself. And even though I know people use filters and edit photos, or get plastic surgery, I still find myself falling into the trap of comparing myself to them or feeling like I'm supposed to achieve what is really an unrealistic or unattainable standard of beauty. So I've been working to be more conscious of these things and realize that I sometimes have a skewed perception of my own appearance. Also, being healthy is way more important than being attractive, and focusing on living a life of purpose and doing things I enjoy helps me to get out of this mentality. Plus, all of the people I love don't look like movie stars, so why should I measure my own lovability by my appearance?

It's so depressing the way so many people operate. You can be the most wonderful partner, even beautiful, but if you don't touch online/virtual "relative standards" of exceptional beauty, it's not enough. THAT'S what matters to so many people: the compared value of their partner in the eyes of society, not to themselves or each other as a couple. There is a marvelous thing that tends to happen as you grow older as a human: You don't feel as needy for a romantic partner, as so much of it rests upon sexual attraction. Life is so beautiful by itself that you don't necessarily need someone to enjoy it with you. That dependency begins to erode and the appreciation for a partner that loves you despite your aging state, grows, and those who can't do that, well that's not our problem anymore. Thank goodness there are so many work options today.

I don't think that it is much of a problem. Although this might affect how people view you at first glance and negatively affect your chances of hitting on a person, people's faces tend to look more attractive the more you look at them and the more you spend time with them. So personally this shouldn't worry people too much.

Realistic filters made this issue worse because when people saw textured skin on photos and videos, they were shocked. If you told them that those attractive people on social media have filters, they would think you're jealous, even if it's common and obvious.
People on TV and on social media look way different in real life. We all forget about professional makeup, special effects, camera angles, lighting, etc.
I know when I see a truly attractive person when I feel (slight) fear. I’m not accustomed to seeing people with such symmetrical features that it triggers that part of my brain the same way as pictures of faces in the uncanny valley. Either that or I’m just scared of other people.

I totally concur with the point about perceiving idealized faces as belonging to another realm. I think some of us have become so exhausted by the appearance obsession of the modern world that we've given up on trying to achieve perfection or expecting it from others. Some people who feel they're lacking in appearance do develop other aspects of themselves, which works in their favor. Oftentimes the quirks or imperfections of someone's appearance will begin to look beautiful if that person has a certain magnetism to their personality.
Also beauty naturally fades with age bit by bit even if the person ages really well. So developing those extra skillsets or leaning into their own strengths may be really beneficial for people in the long run

I'm a woman whose always considered myself a 5 or a 6.5 on my best of days. Always thought that i have "cute" (ie youthful or babyface) features but not "beautiful". Is it a coincidence that all of the men that have ever told me im "beautiful" (complete strangers mind you) have been 40+? For reference im currently 30 so not particularly young. Could be generational in that I as a 27 year old guy would never tell a woman I wasn't on extremely good terms with they're beautiful out of fear of being considered creepy. I've always felt like a woman wouldn't respect it either, like you'd be drawing attention to the surface level, playing into the idea that you're prioritising their exterior over their interior, and then there's the fact that you inherit your face, it's not earned. Even when women put on makeup it feels like treading on eggshells complimenting them, because they could feel like they need it in order to receive compliments, which feeds into bad self esteem.

I was waiting for men's photos too and how it impacts women and their perception of what a handsome man is today. And how men that look like models affect most of the "regular" men population and their own self-confidence.
I feel sad for men of today. So many men used to be able to have a good job and find a nice girl to start a family with that was their “looks match”. I think this one of the issues with dating apps. Everyone sees so many attractive people that theoretically you could date so everyone more average just seems unappealing.
I am SO AWARE of the attractiveness bias that I developed a sort of opposite version of it.
I find common, everyday-looking, not-quite-perfect women much more attractive than supermodels or famous acctresses considered astonishingly beautiful.
In fact, I remember in my youth having HUGE crushes on actresses which are cast as "homely" characters, such as Renee Zellwegger and others I can not remember clearly now.
I agree with finding everyday-people that are healthy, attractive… but I think that’s also maybe because we won’t see actress level beauty or supermodel beauty on the streets… if we do, it’s not like on TV or internet because they likely won’t be decked out in makeup and extravagant clothing…

Frankly, the vast majority of truly beautiful people that I’ve encountered were some of the worst conversations and interactions I’ve had. There are outliers but generally I feel like they are less interested in forming a genuine connection and often lack depth to their character. It could be that they subconsciously believe that they are superior. I’ve actually found this to be more true with men (I’m a straight man), but could just be coincidence or my own bias.
It's definitely true about men. I frequently go to night spots and etc where you'll find a lot of men like this, and 8 times out of 10 they have the same contrived, vanilla personality. They aren't interesting whatsoever.

My features are unusual on the beauty spectrum and people tend to look at me with curiosity when I am out in public. I don't wear makeup and dress without showing much, so it's not my clothes. Many have called me pretty and beautiful and it's fun to have them try to guess my ethnic heritage. They usually get it partially correct but can never guess the rest. Men often show interest and it's not because I am behaving in or dressing in an attention drawing way. I am not model material by usual standards, I am not even slim. Maybe its the confidence in the way I dress my body and my attitude. Maybe it's my face. Maybe its the whole package. Can't know for sure!
I am attractive but I also have anxiety and I’ve noticed that most of the time I get hit on is when I have my sunglasses on! I think it’s because I feel more comfortable and walk in a more confident manner! Instead of looking nervously around left to right. As I've grown older and have been exposed to more and more people, I find that I see human bodies and faces as less unique in general. When I was younger growing up in a small town, each person seemed to have more unique character based on their appearance. Now it often seems I am seeing the same body template with only subtle variations between each person. I guess as one's perspective expands the differences between things shrinks.

am I the only one that shuts down and gets depressed if someone is better . Seeing someone more attractive wont make me strive to be better, ill just feel like giving up, but on the other hand if Im better than some/most in something than it more likey for me to stive to be the best in that.
I do that as well, but I think that we allow other people affect us too much. If we truly worked on ourselves, and believe that we did our best, how everyone else looks will naturally become more inconsequential. I believe the actual question here is, did we make the best of ourselves and our lives? If yes, then there's nothing to feel depressed about. If no, then take steps to identify what it is about yourself or your life that you find lacking, and then find solutions to improve upon them.
Also, it is natural for us to feel good when we are doing better than some people as most of us are ego driven. But you have to remember there will always be someone who is better than you, and this applies to everyone. Self-reflection is important, and attention and external validation will not last forever. In the end, it is better to look for inner peace and fulfillment.
I am not on social media a ton and if I am its engaging with people I actually know irl. Its so sad to me to see the shift from social media going from social and community based to now mostly entertainment. I dont think the entertainment is wrong I just think most people dont see it as entertainment they see it as real life and that is whats sad.

I remember thinking I was actually pretty cute when I was in my early to mid teenage years. I was not much on social media back then. I never thought of myself as outstandingly beautiful, but I was very much okay with the way I looked.
I am 21 now and I no longer think I'm pretty at all, despite my facial features not having changed much at all. There is not really anything I could name about my looks that I like. I find myself average to slightly unattractive and I think it is due to social media and comparing myself to these edited photos all the time.
My saving grace is, that most pretty people are posing looking at nothing, and therefore for me, look boring/stupid. So unless the attractive person is laughing/smiling/ expressing joy, I just find them unattractive?(Models; Actors etc)
I watched this because the thumbnail caught my attention. Both women looked very similar to me. The biggest differences were the 2023 woman appeared to have more makeup on and the 1970s woman wore the clothes and hair styles of the time. The physical differences were subtle to me, to the point that they looked related like a mother and daughter pictured at the same age. I didn’t see a dramatic difference in attractiveness when the fluff is removed

whenever I see beautiful ppl I wanna cry because I know I won’t ever be there level of pretty
In the real world, I see people becoming less and less attractive. Even youngsters these days are generally chunky, whereas growing up there was usually only one or two fat kids in the classroom. Of course I don’t live in LA so there’s that.
More reason for us to all spend less time online in general

Issue is that a lot of “attractive” people on social media edit, use filters, wear makeup and change how they look. I have never seen really any girl who looks like the girls on social media. I never thought about it until this past year like why I dont see anyone who looks as good as they do in social media. Is it my city? Nope, I live in a big city and diverse too.
People just tend to look very different from social media. I wondered why some girls look so different and Im like “why do they look so photogenic? I know its partly makeup but Ive seen them in real life and they good look like normal people” and wondered why they would wana portray themselves so different because people who see them in real life know they dont look like that.
If everyones making themselves look better on social media than people perceptions are distorted and so when we go out in regular like we just normal people when were all normal ourselves
I have also noticed that all these "attractive" faces have plentiful of make up on them.
