I am feeling drained, abused and used just from 1 client. I wish I could ignore them forever. I don't need their money if it comes with a side dish of abuse -- and they're usually always the lowest paying clients. They take away time from my ideal clients. Some people are bullies who just want to spread their pain to others. No matter what you do they will find fault and abuse. I'll eat the bad review and get 5 more positive reviews to overshadow it. I did not become my own boss to be abused by a toxic client.
I just wanted to come back and say thank you. I watched your video last night to mentally prepare myself to fire a client, and I did it! I remained kind, professional, and informative, all while being firm and specific on the behaviors that weren’t appropriate for the context of his session. You helped give me that clarity and I could not agree more about making space for ideal clients! Not only do I have one less non-fit client, I have also gained the space and energy for 5 best-fit clients. Thank you.
It’s crazy how we literally all go through the same thing with clients no matter how different our businesses may be! I’m a freelance Videographer/Cinematographer & I can relate with literally everything you said! As I grew mentally & financially I wanted my business to naturally do the same so I’m now in the process of only working with clients that make me feel good about working with them & not get anxiety from the thought of having to spend 15 hours or more with them on a 1-2 day shoot smh
This just helped me be OKAY with doing the firing! I'm a Real Estate agent and everyone I asked said noooooo keep them for the commission....but....I do love myself more, I have anxiety now because of this customer. She just is static energy, plays crazy, does weird things that don't make sense to sellers....just too much....so thank you!
Get rid of the looney tune, lol. You will feel so much better when they leave. I had a client that made me feel uncomfortable and tense. Whenever my other clients saw me interract with her, they would always ask me if I was okay. I allowed her to suck out all of my happiness and joy. Wish I would have gotten rid of her sooner.
I just fired my first client. The toxic client characteristics you described are them to a tee. I tolerated a lot with them, calls on Sundays, calls on vacations, trying to use me to train their staff, devaluing my work... I have given myself peace by cutting them off & freed my schedule for my higher paying clients who respect me & my personal & professional boundaries and appreciate my professional advice.
My business is less than a year old and I’m figuring out how to fire one toxic client who I’ve had since the beginning. They demand so much from me and pay me less than all my other clients, and I can never seem to keep them happy. I’m not confrontational at all so it’s very hard for me. This video helped me so so much. Thanks for making this.
That’s great advice! I’m struggling so much with this one client... he’s Impossible, it’s so hard to communicate with him. I put him on silent mode in WhatsApp because he always texts me late at night and on sundays... I’m firing him next month for sure but I honestly don’t wish him as a client for anyone. I’ve known him for 6 years or so and he hasn’t change at all, he gets worse by the years. Anyways, enough with the rant. Great video 👍
This is such a great video! I have been freelancing for around a year now and I have had many difficult clients. As said in the video having a difficult client can be draining. For me having 1 difficult client feels like working with 5 regular clients at the same time. I have now gotten to a point where I can say no to bad clients and if you are starting off think of the bad clients as growing pains, they will come but you will outgrow them.
Such reassuring advice. I have a client that is refusing to pay after two months of reminder emails, and finding myself very, very drained after communicating with them.
U let that go on way too long. They need to pay up immediately or u fire themonthespot as a client. My guess is u will never see the money. I wish u well.
This is so true. I had to fire my only freelance client I did graphic design for 4 years. I can look up any toxic client video or blog and it's this person I'd been working for. Luckily I don't need them as I do this for a day job and I have moved up over these years. I no longer freelance for anyone, it's just going to be my day job I punch in and out of.
anyone else feeling tempted to actually tell the client "it's not me, it's you" instead of softening the blow? :D they're such a pain sometimes without even realizing... ok, not really gonna say that... just a thought :D
This is sooooo reassuring.. just had to drop my one and only stressful client and the anxiety has been brutal. Am a cleaner and suddenly found myself being a housekeeper and then a caretaker of the house and terrible communication of expectations which kept me constantly on edge. I have been feeling so guilty for needing to drop them as a client but this video is seriously helping validate my decision.
This is beautiful, thank you so much 🙏 love the idea of setting a bench mark for when to do it! It's empowering when it's at a phase where you kinda gotta keep working with them a little longer but just being able to declare that this is temporary is incredibly uplifting. Thank you!
This is a very important video. And you expressed it very well, thanks for sharing! I agree completely and I have fired clients that were abusive or not valuing what I had to offer or were not respecting the coach client relationship. My question for you is: How do you handle negative comments/long essays (public or private) from toxic clients? You always try to let these clients down nicely, but sometimes they get very offended. What do you say to their comments?
yes i hope you are right with this thesis of saying no to the clients and yes to the universe. I have been saying no to other things but the only outcome is very subjective, it means i focus on the essential and do not depend too much on some outcomes. i have one client that pays me 30$ only for a music composition that costs in average 100$ and behaves pedantic like he is a client of Abbey Roads or worse, cause he has also no skills to criticize what he perceives. I hope this is just ignorance. You are such a sweet piece or heart, i liked
So related with all you said…i hv some clients a lot of questions and my time answering them and at the end they just order a small cake or just few cupcakes..🤦🏻♀️ and it’s annoying…
I feel like im trapped with these clients. I just wanted to come tomterms with them but everytime i try to ser a meeting they play games. They gave me a check and i lost it anywar ago i found out when i checked my records so i told them please show me a record of payment that you gave me and he recited dates from his note book i used those dates to confirm the checks that i was missing and told him to provide me the paid checks from his chase account and he starts going intl a tirade. I dont know what to do with them i dont mind to.lose all the money close to 12k but i need my mental peace of mind. They just dragging me in . The issue is i have 4 jobs wkth them 2 are ready to close and 1 are not . Of the 2 ready to close 1 job is the one that i have no record of payment. Plus these jobs they give menare nerve racking
My client hired me and his first words were my old landscaper was lazy. I thought if hes talking crap about him he will most likely talk bad about me. He watered his grass before i mowed and said you left grass clumps on my yard. I said the grass was wet. He said i'll go back to my old landscaper if you dont bag it. I said i can bag it but please make sure not to water before i mow. Threatning to fire me without giving me a chance to fix it i dont want to work for him anymore. I'm going to raise my price on him and if he wants to continue service then cool if not my competition can have him 😅

I feel this comment!
That’s the greatest thing about having your own business, you’re not obligated to stay!
This is so true, especially the paying part. All my bad clients were low-budget jobs. It's very funny how that works. (I am a freelance Web Developer)
Boom
Well said

I feel this!
As a fellow videographer I couldn't agree with you more!

Thank you! I’m dealing with firing a client now. This was very helpful

Any updates? What happened?
Same here, and after firing him he became angry and tried to start fight. Ended up asking for his money back from his last haircut
I needed this today! Self love is so important and reinvigorating! Thank you for this video 🙏

Clients who use you. I would appreciate a vlog on that. :)

I can’t tell you how helpful this was. Thank you ❤️
Getting ready to fire a long time client....thanks for the video.
Thank you! Of course, the circumstances to do this may not be ideal, but I think I really needed to hear this!
Great video, I absolutely agree with you.
Yes!! I've also found I need to detox from other toxic coaches...who drain my knowledge base. I NEED to work with you!
This is beautiful, thank you so much 🙏 love the idea of setting a bench mark for when to do it! It's empowering when it's at a phase where you kinda gotta keep working with them a little longer but just being able to declare that this is temporary is incredibly uplifting. Thank you!
This is gold. Thank you!

This is what I needed to hear, thank you!
I feel like you said "do they spark joy?" ☺
You are spot on.
Thank you great advice.
Great video, made me feel better, I ve had some really difficult clients in the past.
Great feedback and topic!
Thanks so much for this! I really have been going through it with this one video client! So many mixed messages all the time!

I have to fire a seller today. It really hurts because she's buying as well.

How do I know if I'm a toxic client, and that my therapist hates me?
