- Michael Callan is seriously amazing, and CRAZILY under-appreciated! He was awesome at drama, BRILLIANT at comedy, and could dance stupendously (I just used a remarkable amount of adjectives ;-D)! In fact, he originated the role of Riff in "West Side Story" on Broadway.
This tribute is made up of films/TV episodes that are available on DVD (except for the clips from "Occasional Wife"). There isn't a lot that is available. Which is very sad. Anyways....

Gorgeous and talented man. I've had a crush on him since I was a kid in the '60s. He was the original Riff in the Broadway production of West Side Story. You know he had to be talented to get that plum role.
He was , is and always will be one of the greats. He can dance, sing, act, what have you, and make it look easy. It's a joy to see him when he occasionally acts. Love seeing him in old tv show reruns. All the best, kudos.
I agree, he's quite a package. Alas, many talented people don't get the breaks...and then there are the no or mini talents who skyrocket. Depends on who you know...

This guy was so cute!! Fell for him recently while watchnig Cat Balou (just watching his devilish facial expressions makes the whole movie for me). Who knew he was a dancer too back in the day. I'm really surprised with those good looks, all that talent and personality that he isn't a household name today...what a shame. Glad I looked him up, thanks for the video

If you want to see Michael Callen sizzle as a dancer, check him out dancing in the 1960 movie, "Pepe," partnered by Shirley Jones, dancing to "The Rumble." Wow, great dancer, such presence and dark good looks. Wish he could have gone farther in his career.
He is incredible. I saw him for the first time in Gidget Goes Hawaiian and felt in love with him. Not only was he a hottie but he was so talented and such beautiful dancer. Great tribute.

He also had a guest spot on That Girl as Ann's old boyfriend. 😍 I was a fan from seeing him in Cat Ballou and had no idea he was such a great dancer! Thank you for putting this together!

D Josa He really does steal Cat Ballou, doesn't he! Yes, it is very surprising that he wasn't more popular. I think it's simply that is particular set of talents just weren't wanted by the time he came around (he would have done brilliantly in an earlier, more musical era)!
Such talent. He should have stayed a big star. Today I think he would have been more appreciated.

Lucky you. His singing on the original 1957 Columbia Master works recording of West Side Story is amazing. I've never heard anyone with that much richness sing Riffs songs like him.

Poor Michael Callan. Was born too late for his particular combination of talents and good looks; they were no longer appreciated by late 60's Hollywood, as the culture was changing, and mens roles were. . . well, we STILL haven't recovered.

Michael Callan has passed away. That's what the switchboard operator is trying to tell us. Almost all of the "Gidget" cast and crew members have passed away.

Great Actor.. Yes “The Victors"
Wow. You missed one of his best dramatic roles. He played a WWII soldier in Europe in The Victors with George Peppard and George Hamilton. Small part, nasty part, but he made the best of it.

Occasional Wife was a great show! Michael Callan is such a great and versatile performer. Too bad there was only one season of this show.
