I hope you’ve reached out to Paul and told him what you’ve done. He’s a pioneer and master craftsman, a class act and great person who’s currently going through some real challenges with his life. You’ve got a real treasure and it’s nice that you’ve made it shine again on the trail where it belongs. 🙂
That is true! The restoration of this bike is great and it’s nice to bring old bikes to new life. The scenery on the ride is awesome! Keep on going and thanks for this video 👍😘
Not to detract from the build, because that’s what we’re here for…but the ASMR aspect of your videos is just as appealing to me personally…HOWEVER, the music after the build is always SO ON POINT, and I thought worth mentioning. Please keep finding bikes with life left in them and sharing your perspective on how they should continue to live. Thank you.
I don't recall ever seeing you mention where you live, but it must be pretty awesome to be able to ride out to a trail with scenery like that! I love the early mountain bikes. I've never had anything high end like that, or a Ritchey, but I do have an 84 Mongoose ATB that I hit the trails with, and I also have a white 90's Mongoose Switchback, and a hot pink GT Tequesta waiting for there chance to be restored... Love your videos... I actually just learned a trick to v-brakes from watching this one that I hadn't caught before... Backing the barrel adjusters all the way out when connecting the cable... Then turning it back in. I'll be doing that on my next project. Thanks!
"The Purple People Eater" is a song that was written and performed by Sheb Wooley, which reached No. 1 in the Billboard pop charts in 1958 in the US and Canada. I guess he really liked that song.
I like the way you used mostly parts. I love where you were riding it. I live in south Alabama. It flat here. I live in the wrong place. Also I love your work. Thanks
I have an early 2000s steel frame Brodie that languished in storage for years as it just wasn't as "fun" or capable as my newer bikes. Out of curiosity I converted it to a single speed setup last year and its an absolute blast to ride once more! Looks like someone else may have had the same idea.
Beautiful job on the build man!!! Paul Brodie is still kicking on his youtube channel and you can learn how to make a frame like that among many other things.
It's got one eye and one horn. It flys and eats people 😂 it looks like a flying purple people eater to me 😂 now I'll have that song stuck in my head all day
I've watched Paul's UA-cam channel for a while now and it's almost a little but surreal seeing one of his frames pop up here, like worlds colliding. It's also a funny contrast in styles too, because he's not very precious about things. If there's a messed up tube in a frame he'll be getting the torch out to melt the old one off and braze a new one on.
Cool bike and awesome build. I especially love those wheels with that different spoke pattern. I was going to link to the song but I see someone has already done it. Keep up the great work!
Nice XT parts. The older ones are getting very hard to find and when one does locate some the asking price these days has gone stupid. You are so lucky to have the bike collective nearby where you can pick up stuff. 😊
Brodie is oldie, but goldie! ;) Beautiful build and video, I have only two observations. It seems to me that the headset bowls could be put in reverse, then the Chris King lettering wouldn't be upside down (1). And then, next time for us non US folks, if you could switch the scale to kilograms as well just for a moment when weighing so we don't have to recalculate (2). Thanks a lot and happy biking. Cheers from Czechia! :)
Love that you are restoring a Brodie!!! I have one just waiting for the full treatment!! Your King headset cups are upside down. From my experience these cups are not identical and may have sealing issues. Just an FYI. :)
I had that same exact bike in all purple. It was a XT/XTR build with gold cup Rockshoxs. Loved that bike, I gave the frame to one of my buddies after using it a few years. Wonder if he still has it.
Super impressive. My 90s Schauff hurricane xt was 10.5kg in stock form with full xt, indy xc and crossmax ceramic wheelset. So thus being even lighter by 600grams is mighty impressive.
Love this build, maybe my favorite yet. I got a Barracuda A2V frame from the Salt Lake Bike Collective that's waiting to get built in a very similar way. Even has a lil dent that will make me feel less bad when I dent it again.
Another great video about another fantastic bike. Lovely resto-mod with solid component's on an awsome steel frame. And the Flight is the perfect saddle.🤩🤙 Just like he would have built it today?
Beautiful build - makes me want to go find something similar and do that. But my wife has me on a plan where if I bring in a new bike, one has to leave! 😑 What's the song as you are riding? It fit the video very well!

Seconding this! And I'll add that the odds are good that Paul has some photos of that bike's early life, or at least bikes of the same model.
Hit him up he has a channel here. You can watch the master at work.
Part of me is hoping he’ll notice the video. I would love to collaborate with him. I’m a super fan of his work and his UA-cam channel. 🙌
@@oldshovel I'll let him know, he's a good friend of mine!
Paul Brodie is such an amazing person. And he is still making videos. Awesome bike!
That is true! The restoration of this bike is great and it’s nice to bring old bikes to new life. The scenery on the ride is awesome! Keep on going and thanks for this video 👍😘
Paul is awesome. I wish he was my next door neighbor.
The beauty in the simplicity of your rebuild is so fantastic, thanks for sharing, Rob!
9.8 kg is insanely light for a steel MTB.
Your method of setting up V-brakes is geniusly easy.
Not to detract from the build, because that’s what we’re here for…but the ASMR aspect of your videos is just as appealing to me personally…HOWEVER, the music after the build is always SO ON POINT, and I thought worth mentioning. Old shovel you inspire me to do old bikes over like you do thanks for the encouragement
A Brodie lightweight frame is one of the unicorns i chase.
I hear you.
@@oldshovel Yours is my size. And i don´t care for dings.😇😇
I sure appreciate that you included the baby/robin blue fork for this build, paid some homage to Mr. Brodie and a legendary colour in his line up ❤
I can’t believe I never knew that trick with the brakes!! This has changed my life!! 😂 14:40 Genius!!
Awesome. Happy to pass that on.
I love your videos. They bring me peace and I learn a lot about bikes. You make me want to try to rejuvenate my old ladies! Thank you
That's a keeper.
Every bike has a story. Thanks for this chapter in the story.

I think somewhere in the Salt Lake City area judging by a previous video
I did live in Bountiful but recently moved to Pleasant View. The riding here is on a trail through my new neighborhood.

3:54…. The dropper post inspiration is discovered. Way to go Rob!
Love all the parts in the build except that shifter. That XT derailleur and Crank looked great together.
I like the way you used mostly parts. I love where you were riding it. I live in south Alabama. It flat here. I live in the wrong place. Also I love your work. Thanks
Love the build and video! My OCD kicked in when I saw you putting those headset cups upside down though. LOL ;-)
Thats one sweet ride, I missed my old school v-brake mtbs🥲😌
Flying Purple People Eater has got to be a reference to how you're gonna eat up the competition on the trails on this superlight bike!
Very nice restauration, a bike to keep
So happy to see these old dream bikes of my riding youth(prime) get a second life. Makes me smile and feel sad at the same time.

I love Paul’s channel. One of my favorite.
Great build! great project bike!
Beautiful build! I love all that simplicity!
Awesome build old shovel
What a great build. I LOVE a lightweight project. Back in 2013 I designed and built the worlds lightest pro sized BMX cruiser. Lot's of titanium!
Beautiful build, Rob! And you've got some new scenery and some cool trails to explore. Good for you! Thanks
That stunning vista of the mountains tho...
Great bike build as well. So simple, yet snappy. 👍
Love the build and love the beautiful place you rode awesome scenery
What a gem❤ and NO rust🤗
Gen. 1 XT V brakes and Suntour thumbshifters still rock🚀🚀🚀
Always a good sign when the seat post just drops like that during disassembly.
Truth!
something very special about steel hardtail mountain bikes👍🤙😍

Totally! I love Paul’s practical attitude. I also totally love his shop and all his knowledge. I would love to just hang out with him in his shop.
@@oldshovel I hope it happens and makes it into a video!
That’s my hood, I didn’t know that trails existed. Nice video
what a beautfiul location to ride a bike and live - you are blessed 🙂
Love the green sidewall tires... I cant seem to find that stuff anymore.
Your videos never get old. Keep it up!
Cool bike and awesome build. I especially love those wheels with that different spoke pattern. I was going to link to the song but I see someone has already done it. Keep up the great work!
a Brodie ! great idea. Loved TheSouvereign in the 90s. and Paul Brodie is an amazing guy and amazing frame-andBike-and Parts-wizard :-)
Total wizard. 🙌
Nice XT parts. The older ones are getting very hard to find and when one does locate some the asking price these days has gone stupid. You are so lucky to have the bike collective nearby where you can pick up stuff. 😊
Love this build, I had the same Rolf wheels on my Trek 8500 in 97. I realise this is late but the ChrisKing headset cups were on upside down 🙂
Such a beautiful place to ride. Those mountains 😮
Wow very light bike with the shocks!

@cony Yes, correct. I also second measurements should be displayed as well in kilograms.
Great color!
With scenery around you like that, I can't imagine how you get any work done.
One of my favourite videos! Well done. Class bike
This is the best build you’ve done.
It looks beautiful where you live!
That's a sweet bike! It's ironic for me that you scored this, I have been vegging on his vides lately. He's a class act, just like you!
I love this build ! I only have 2 Brodies and only one is steel. amazing frames
Love that you are restoring a Brodie!!! I have one just waiting for the full treatment!!

Oh, you did a video... LOL
😁
Flying purple people eater may be from the Beatles Yellow Submarine cartoon? Lovely build ❤

Great job and perfect choice of tires...
hapiness ! you back !!!

I don't know how but all your bikes are awesome
Another awesome build! Thank you for sharing.
Gead Blades! Wow. That brings me back.
Nice. And that's with front shock. My restored blue specialized rockjumper sworks is also around that weight, but with rigid fork.
That's oncredible! 10sp build with a vintage suspension fork (I don't think it's very light) - and a total weight (with pedals!) under 10kg - WOW!
The vintage Sid forks were super light, I think 2.6-2.8lbs. The fork actually helped a lot on this one.
Amazing bike, amazing job! 👏👏👏👏👌
Beautiful!!
Brodie is my hero
please make a gravel bike build ASMR + CHILL LOFI inspired video that's long enough for early morning coffee.
Love this build! Seems like this one was personal too you
That's a monster headset cup tool 🤩😎
Chris King 7075 aluminum headsets🤘🤘. I'm still using one that I bought in 2011; it's Royal Navy blue 🤘🤘
Great video.
What were the original pair of brakes that the bike came with, they seemed nice
Love this build, maybe my favorite yet. I got a Barracuda A2V frame from the Salt Lake Bike Collective that's waiting to get built in a very similar way. Even has a lil dent that will make me feel less bad when I dent it again.
Nice job! Can I ask what thumbshifter you used for this build?
Súper-Cool Green-Walls! 💚
Fascinant .... chaque fois ... merci
Another great video about another fantastic bike.
Lovely resto-mod with solid component's on an awsome steel frame.
And the Flight is the perfect saddle.🤩🤙
Just like he would have built it today?
Nice that you restored a Brodie!
Was there a reason you reversed the headset cups?
What’s the spec of the thumbshifters?
Headset cups are the wrong way around?
😁🙌.

@@oldshovel interesting and unexpected rationale. I suppose it depends on how you look at it 😁
What kind / brand tires are those (with the blue wall) ? Thanks.
Hi my friend, what is the name of cleaner foam that you put It on the bike. Thanks
That's a keeper 😊❤
Question , why is a Torque wrench never in use?
Great job. 👍
Thats slightly lighter than my aluminum road bike from 2010, impressive
Very nice bike.
Lovely !!!
Oooh... That's pretty!
What are those tires?❤
Great build & video. The upside down headset cups are wrecking me though!
😁😜
Parabéns pelo belo trabalho! 🇧🇷
AWESOME! 21.5 lbs with pedals
Where can I find them tires ?
Flite saddle is still my favorite...
Incredible less than 22 lb, muy bonita!!!
CK headset my choice as well
Para cuándo una reconstrucción desde cero, hace bastante que no haces una!👍,saludos desde San Juan Argentina
Beautiful build - makes me want to go find something similar and do that. But my wife has me on a plan where if I bring in a new bike, one has to leave! 😑
What's the song as you are riding? It fit the video very well!
