I have tried similar packing and it clogs way too quickly. It's also a pain to unpack and clean. Sounds good, doesn't work.

Take a piece of filter sponge and put it in the bottom compartment on the grill, this’ll act as good mechanical filtration and you can replace it or clean it off as needed

I would like to ask, if you have modified your filter in this way, when do you start cleaning it? I mean, how often do you clean it approximately? And how exactly do you clean it? Because I see that you have a layer of green cotton at the bottom, right, and then a white cotton on top of that, and then the tiny stones at the top, so how do you clean it? Is it the white cotton that you take out and replace or is it the green cotton that has to be cleaned?

You can buy these sponge in petsmart stores. But you can always buy any sponge and just cut it to fit. I like these sponge though because they are cheap; they cost less than $4 bucks in petsmart stores.

No, don't buy just any sponge. You can, but make sure the sponge you buy doesn't have any additives. The sponge you use for dishes have cleaning additives.

Replace the first tree things every 3-4 weeks?
That's expensive. It's better to get 30ppi sponge for first layer, Maybe a 50ppi sponge after that, and then a nylon bag with the media.
