I was watching this video because I was concerned about the gap on the motor with my own IQ 60. I feel much more confident knowing mine is not defective as they seem to be made this way. Mine works great, I have had it for a couple months now. Thanks for the video. I love the live plants you are growing out of your filters! I have never seen that before. God Bless.

It’s supposed to have that gap on the motor to reduce noise.
I have the iq30, it came the same way...I didn't notice it until I cleaned it out... thought I broke it but apparently this is normal. I like this this filter, recommended.

Hello! I stumbled across this video while looking for some setup help with the newer version of this filter. Not much has changed, but the filter is supposed to be that way. So far I’m just cycling my soon to be cichlid tank and it’s doing a great job! I’ve got a 55 gallon and it usually takes two to three weeks but I’m already getting some nitrate at the end of week 1!

Mam, I have the 20 gallon version of the Tetra Whisper IQ for my 20 gal. tall aquarium. The housing for the impeller was designed that way on purpose. By submerging it in the water. Its more quiet and it does not need to be primed. I've owned mine since Feb. 2019. I have had no issues with it. I would recommend it.
Just like to add that I've used the aquaclear 50 hob filters in my old 30 gal. hex aquarium. Before I sold the filter and the aquarium to a friend. Now that filter I would NOT recommend. Its vibrates, very noisy, and if you have a power outage while you are away. It will not work until its pre-primed again; when power is restored. So if you are not aware when there is a power outage at your home. You may come home to some dead fish. If you are gone for a few days or so. Due to no filtration.

That's a nice filter. I currently have an Aquaclear on a 54 gallon corner tank. It seems to create more turbulence on the tank. This one looks like its a slower gentler output. It looks like this one doesn't need to be primed because of the pump being fully submerged.

Thanks for the review. I'm a big fan of affordable filters and its not always easy to find reviews on stuff that isn't an aquaclear or a canister. I have two aquatech 30-60s that I got from walmart. They where only like 40 dollars each and have been keeping my 65 gallon crystal clear for months. Other than that I love aqueon hob filters but like you I quit using the cartridges. Its easier and cheaper to cut up floss or sponge and put in it, or both. I don't really use carbon so thats not a big deal to me. Btw, thumbs up for the wiggle lol

Hi there...so glad I found your video on this, although I have the IQ20, not the IQ 60. I just purchased this, (Feb. 2020) and I also noticed the small gap and I also tried to push it to close the gap. It would not stay up, same as yours did. We are much alike...I get paranoid about stuff like this, but at least I didn't have the blue residue you found, though I agree it was probably the box itself. From what I have found trying to track this issue down, I did find something that said it is supposed to be that way so the noise level is reduced since it is not touching the top piece, so will see what happens. I too am curious about that tablet thing and think I will just not mess with it unless I see the glass getting dirty, etc. I don't like dumping in lots of chemicals unless necessary and since I don't know what the tablets are made of, sure don't want it to poison my fish. I have a planted tank, so even more concern about adding some unknown substance. As long as the water is clear, etc., why chance it. THANKS for the video...I am very appreciative.
I remember in like the early 2000s tetra used to just make External filters then they transition to internal filters I hope they sell both now!

I also have the same filter, I have a IQ 20 and 30 for my tanks. I have mine for about 8 months now and the motor piece hangs like that for me too.....

Its been working fine for me so far 😀 I noticed a few more people pointed out that this filter does this..so I guess its part of the design.

Hello id like to ask if you dont mind for what tank size is your filter? Im planning to get a 20 gallon for my room however dont want to be bothered by the noise of water trickling from the filter, would it be a great idea to invest on this brand? Thank you!

It will be good that you call the company to see their knowledge about fish.
Some people use the bigger filters on smaller tanks for the flow. Especially for nano reef tanks. Cuts out the need for a wave maker.
I myself run an aquaclear 70 on a 10g nano reef. Perfect amount of flow, has space for a heater inside as well as a refugium.

I purchased a 40 gallon version a while ago I thought it was defective as well i guess those types of filters just come like that idk i ended up returning it because it was loud so i coulnd't tell you my experience with it over a week

Just purchased this filter last week. Yes it's still a sloppy design and it does leak a bit of water from that area but stays in the tank. I've never seen a filter that seemed 'broken' before using it. The other annoying thing is the impeller has a tiny rubber cap that fell off of mine and when inspecting the filters it wouldn't turn back on. After pulling everything out from the tank I noticed the impeller was just gone. I looked everywhere in the tank and finally found it in the bottom of the intake tube. Of course it was missing the rubber cap. Hopefully the magnets will keep the impeller in the motor. It does filter fine and is quiet but I prb wouldn't recommend it.

Can you plz tell me if you suppose to keep the rubber impeller endcap on or take it off?
I just called tetra, I was also wondering about that housing. I was told to box it up and send it back. Customer service dude Scott, was no help at all. He never once said the housing was supposed to be loose like that. Now I see from your video, they are all like this.
Oh wow...thats really frustrating that their own customer support wasn't helpful. Makes me wonder what advice they provide on their aquarium help line...

The fill line is where the water needs to be at a minimum no less.

Girl, that little gap between the motor and the filter's main body is supposed to be on porpouse. This is how it was designed, to isolate the noise.
You seem to not understand beneficial bacteria. It grows on any surface. So having that plastic surface in the flow is a great housing for BB. It will also house on your filter sponge. The gap makes it so the impeller noise isn't contacting with the rest of the box hence the whisper name.

High my name is Lori, I have the same type of filter and I've been trying to get a answer all day about the same question you have. I guess it is suppose to be like that because mine is for a 30gal and I wondered the same thing I was trying to get it to close all the way but nothing. So I too am going to leave it as is.

Why do you dump chemicals inside your aquarium? It’s unbalanced?
I am not a fan of hang on back filters. Had a lot of issues with. I use sponge or canister. 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿

I'm up here cussing somebody out about the unnecessarily difficult design.😖 What's with this filter motor attachment?!😤😤😤😤😤 It won't snap back in properly..i see she's also in this video complaining about the same thing. My 55 gallons fancy goldies is a time consuming task, water changing and cleaning plants gravel, decor etcetera enough without this ignorancy of a design! 👎🏾👎🏾Tetra recall this model and go back to the drawing board with a more simplified, time conserving model to clean and put back together.
