English Grammar: Sentence Patterns - What you need to know!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 сер 2024
- NOTE: I apologize for making a slip of the tongue twice towards the end. I said "sentence" instead of "subject." The pattern is subject + verb.
UPDATE: December 2022
I've since modified my understanding and explanation of the SVOO sentence type. I've considered whether or not a prepositional phrase can actually be called the indirect object. It would be more accurate to simply consider the entire prepositional phrase as the second object without naming it the "indirect object." See my new lesson ditransitive verbs. Like you, I'm on an ongoing journey of learning! Thank you for allowing me to guide you and share my understanding as I continually aim to improve and refine it.
Part 2 of a two-part lesson on sentence structure. What common patterns do sentences follow? Learn the basic patterns of a simple sentence. Review the parts of a clause.
Index:
0:01 Why learn sentence patterns?
1:02 Lesson title
1:10 Pattern 1: SV
1:44 Pattern 2: SVO
2:31 transitive vs. intransitive verbs
3:55 What are adverbials? What do you need to know?
6:46 Pattern 3: SVC*
7:22 Linking verbs
8:54 Note on terminology (adverbials / adverbial complements)
11:13 Pattern 4: SVOO (indirect objects vs. direct objects) -- I've since modified my understanding and explanation of SVOO and whether or not a prepositional phrase can actually be called the indirect object. It would be more accurate to simply consider the entire prepositional phrase as the second object without naming it the "indirect object." See my new lesson ditransitive verbs. (Dec. 2022)
13:43 Pattern 5: SVOC
15:13 Practice task
17:52 Recall all 5 basic patterns
18:25 Lesson ending
*NOTE: There isn't always agreement on what makes complements and adverbials different. Knowing that some adverbials are necessary ("obligatory adverbial") makes the job of distinguishing these two elements even harder. I love grammar, but if labels start to get in the way of communication, then we should just follow the acceptable pattern and not argue over what each element of the sentence is called. I've read conflicting information on prepositional phrases functioning as subject complements. Many sources play it safe by only giving the two common examples of subject complements: a noun and an adjective. However, such a presentation leaves too many questions unanswered, in my opinion. I think it's important to recognize that linking verbs connect necessary information about the subject. That information may take the form of a prepositional phrase. My example in the video is presented as an adverbial because it expresses location/position. ("She's in her studio.") A better example of a prepositional phrase functioning as a subject complement would be "in the mood": I'm not in the mood to argue. "In the mood" could be substituted by singe-word adjectives: ready, willing, excited, etc. This substitution makes it easier to argue that "I'm not in the mood" is SVC.

I have my english theory exam in 20 minutes and this was really helpful in revising this topic! I'd always get confused between adverbials and Complements, and now its all clear! Thank you!!
Hope the exam went well! Thank you for studying with me.
Hi Jennifer , I have been watching your UA-cam videos for more than one year and half .And you have the biggest role in improving my English skills .Thank you a lot .I owe you a deep debt of gratitude .You are the best teacher I've ever met .
Hello Ahmad. That is absolutely wonderful to hear. Thank you for posting your comment. By the way, there's still time to share a video message for my YT anniversary video if that's something you're comfortable doing: facebook.com/englishwithjenniferlebedev/photos/a.1130546176957798.1073741828.1129429583736124/1590929590919452/?type=3&theater
The best grammar lesson I've ever seen. I'm a native portuguese speaker, and these patterns are very similar here in Brazil. I'd never learned them in school, but I learned in this lesson, and I can apply this knowledge to my mother tongue too. Thanks!
Thank you! 😃 I'm still working through my own understanding of complements vs. adverbials. Sources sometimes disagree. I've had conversations with other teachers/authors of grammar textbooks. I've shared some of my doubts in comments/video descriptions post-publication. I've also explored complements more in depth in my member-only playlist. ua-cam.com/play/PLfQSN9FlyB6Q9KcdNzhIsJBnkYq7Z4REy.html You'd be welcome to join even for one month to check out those lessons. 🙏

I'm a native speaker trying to relearn some grammatical rules. I find that you really explained each structure very clearly. I'll make sure to direct some of my friends who are learning English to this page.
Hi Daniel. I'm glad this lesson was useful. I have some other grammar and writing lessons that native speakers may find useful. If you need to review the parts of speech for some reason, you can find a 3-part lesson in my grammar playlist. www.englishwithjennifer.com/students/yt-videos/
I know a number of native speakers have used my older videos on types of sentences to review basic structure. I have two videos on this page: www.englishwithjennifer.com/students/improve-your-writing-2/
Take care!
@@Englishwithjennifer The funny thing is I'm an interpreter (Mandarin Chinese and Spanish). I really used it to see the similarities between Chinese and English grammar, so I could get a better understanding of Chinese grammar concerning translation.

The quiz question on 4th pattern was awesome ! In general this video explanation of sentence patterns is top notch ! I wish there was a follow up quiz link to test ability of identifying sentence patterns or sentence pattern mistakes.
Glad you liked it! I may offer more videos on syntax in the future. It depends on the demand. But I do love grammar!
Hi Jennifer, so the pattern SVC is the same as the pattern SVCC: Example: I am excited and I am excited about the trip. The first sentence is the pattern of S+V(Liking verb+ subject complement. The second one is the pattern of S+V+subject complement( which describes the subject)+ adjective complement( which explains the adjective).
Not all sources agree on the role of prepositional phrases in certain combinations. In the end, it's just best to remember "excited about" as a collocation. But, yes, I see "I am excited about the trip" as SVCC. Subject + linking verb + subject complement + adjective complement. Sometimes complements are necessary, but other times they're there for clarification or more detail. For example, when I introduce myself, it would be weird to say, "It's nice" instead of "It's nice to meet you." The infinitive phrase is a necessary complement.
i wasn't able to get my teachers lesson because we are busy spreading the news for an upcoming event and yet we still have to make an assignment and then i stumble in to this page and guest what this one was the lesson my teacher though to my classmate that i missed now i have understand it and wont fall behind sorry for my English but i try best as i can :) i am a Filipino

mam really ur a good and very simplisity...... wow..... very good lot of thanks to u..... now i understood sentence patterns....and also tomorrow i have exam about this questoin....tq i will never forget ur teaching......
Good luck! :)
Hi jennifer. I think that everyone has to learn these patterns but after knowing how to speak.
What i mean is that rules always come after.
I know how to build a sentence without knowing these patterns.
I think they exist to adjust the language like any language,
but they are really useful
Yes, you need some language already to make sense of the patterns. Some grammar can be learned through practice and use. Other aspects need to be studied directly. It also depends on the learner. One method doesn't work for everyone.
Thanks for reflecting on this.
you are the best teacher in the world !
Thank you for the kind words, Chandra!

In reported speech the word order is straight. Similar to embedded sentences.
This is very basic. The dog was lying on the floor chewing into his bone. I used to write grammar examples of my own. Good information. Thx. Indirect object is the same as dative. This is nice .😍 I know these.
I didn't learn the term "dative" until I started studying Russian. :)

Dear Jenifer, you are a great teacher. Your explanation is clear and easy to understand. My ESL students asked me to explain the difference between sentence pattern and sentence structure. Would you mind sharing me the basic and simple answer to them?
We can talk about the structure of each individual sentence. Patterns are what many different sentences have in common.
I also like to differentiate between patterns, structures, and types. You may find the two videos on this page useful: englishwithjennifer.com/students/improve-your-writing-2/
Thank you so much for a complete, interesting, and useful lesson
You are welcome! Thank you for watching.
Dear JenniferESL I do not object to learning or repeating things that need to be done so to. I can swallow my pride with ease. The thing is I'd rather do things all-inclusively in English . The Swedish in my sixth form , A-level, practice book doesn't get me triggered as does Finnish. TY. I also discussed this with my mother during her last weeks at the ward. I still manage this basic stuff.
Your knowledge of different languages has most likely sharpened your mind and given rich insights. Yes, there's value in repetition and review. Of course, it's only natural to desire some novelty as well!
Absolutely..I learnt with Roxette songs.. And it was the most useful way to learn ...thanks for reminding me of that ...
I'm new in this channel, thank you for the lesson. Best regards from Philippines.

Hi, Jennifer, could you put your lessons in a systematic order from basic to advance lesions? You are an angel to all English learners and teachers.
Hi. Thank you for studying with me. My videos are organized into playlists. The playlists appear in a better order on my website: englishwithjennifer.com/students/yt-videos/
thank for teaching, you are great linguistic.
Thank you for the kind comment.
well one question.. I do not find it anywhere.. Regarding your case SVOOA at 13:20 .. how does this work with a complex sentence like if I want to add e.g. "but I was very tired". Do I need to place "last weekend" at the beginning of the whole sentence? As far as I know the adv. "time" always stands in the beginning or at the end. But does this only appear for the independent part or to the whole sentence?
A complex or compound sentence will break up into clauses. Each clause will have its own pattern.
>> I was very tired, so I went to bed early.
(1) I was very tired (SVAC)
"so" is the coordinating conjunction
(2) I went to bed early (SVAA)
Many time adverbials can go at the beginning or end:
Last weekend I visited relatives. (ASVO)
I visited relatives last weekend. (SVOA)
The time expression should be in the clause it modifies.
Correct: I visited relatives last weekend //because I hadn't seen them in a while.
Correct: Last weekend I visited relatives //because I hadn't seen them in a while.
Incorrect: I visited relatives // because I hadn't seen them in a while last weekend.
Does that make sense?
Extremely well!! Thanks so much!😊
Happy you liked it!
Thanks a lot! It's very helpful!
Glad to hear it!
Tnq Jennifer for making this lesson very simple... Above all, the way of ur presentation was too good... that it kindles my desire to listen to u more and more.... 💕

Hi there! Thank you for the very kind comment. I'm glad you enjoyed this grammar lesson. :) Take care!
There was some confusion regarding complements in a sentence, but you simplified that area with style. That's my compliment to you :>)
