AWESOME JOB, Scott and Paul! Thanks for reminding us all why we love IOWA!!! I was born a "PK", lived on a farm for 4 years, and now work in IT at one of this country's largest banks. Iowans have the biggest hearts, a deep sense of integrity, and the people are the friendliest. Let us have our caucus and respect the process.
I have been in Des Moines many times and I must confess that people I encountered everywhere were super nice. I never had a negative or unpleasant experience during any of my visits there. Des Moines is a clean city with good hotels and excellent restaurants to choose from. I highly reccomend it...
Love it. I was born and raised and have lived in every state to the north and east of Iowa (IL, WI, MN), and they've always seemed like good neighbors.
The working replica of the first electronic computer, invented at what is now Iowa State University in Ames, IA. that was on display in Iowa State’s Durham Center, has been moved to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. for the next 15 YEARS!!! I can’t believe they let this treasure go!
Well said Scott. I grew up in the Dom. Rep. and attended ISU and I would have to say that the whole experience was very good. I'm actually glad I became an American through Iowa.
Love this! This Iowa Farm girl can attest! I'd like to add that 4 years of college isn't enough for farmering. We have to keep on learning to continue to feed everyone else. It's time consuming and expensive, amd most of us have to have another job to help support our families, but we wouldn't have it any other way. God Bless IOWA! :)
Yes, Captain James T. Kirk was/is to be born in Riverside, Iowa. There is a copy of the SS Enterprise already there. I don't remember what year but sometime in the future. Excellent video. There is a reason Iowa is first in the nation, it is our wisdom, something those who "fly over" could learn from.
It seems to me the point of this video is to simply say Iowa is not what is often portrayed in the media. I was raised in Iowa, and proud of it. Like any place where humans dwell there are pluses and minuses. Today I live in the NE and I am constantly amazed at how little people know about Iowa or the Midwest. Thanks to the makers of this video for standing up and saying - "Wait a minute, you don't know us!"
According to Atanasoff, several operative principles of the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) were conceived by the professor in a flash of insight during the winter of 1937-1938 after a drive to Rock Island, Illinois.
@Splashguytube Incorrect. From the wikipedia article on computers: "The Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) was the world's first electronic digital computer, albeit not programmable.[23] Atanasoff is considered to be one of the fathers of the computer.[24] Conceived in 1937 by Iowa State College physics professor John Atanasoff," In fact, while visiting the science museum in London, I saw an exhibit display this very fact.
Being an Iowan girl, it's nice to finally see some love for the Mid-west! Love the Mid-west, and the Mid-west will love you. (Cuz we made computers and give you food.) (even though I live in the suburbs.) Any more questions? Just ask meh~
I love Iowa. I live in Eastern Kansas, was married in Iowa to my partner in 2009. I moved to the Midwest in 1984, I am a Moderate politically. And, Mr Bloom, I grew up in Upstate New York and I am Jewish. I do not feel the way you do about US flyover people. I am accepted and love the Midwest, your attack is against all of us in the Prairies. I have a Master's Degree so I must be a hick. Thanks for producing this video. A fellow Midwesterner!!!!
@MrMyske The digital computer was invented by John Attanasoff - a physics professor at Iowa State University. The ENIAC computer - the digital computer that got all the fame - was created after the designer talked extensively with Attanasoff about his invention. The Supreme Court eventually gave the credit for the invention of the digital computer to Attanasoff, and his ABC computer is now in the Smithsonian.
@1Makyo Yeah, I can understand that point of view. I was speaking out of more technicalities than anything since it seems like the computer has a long evolution cycle before hitting what we know today as computers.
@deetjay1 You've never been to one, I am certain of that. ANYONE can go, and you can change your party affiliation if needed on that night. The purpose of a caucus is for each person to pick a candidate, and to also persuade others to pick his/her candidate as well. Then, at the end of the night, the total number of supporters for each candidate is counted up. So, as you can see, each person is involved in creating a "snapshot" of a candidates current popularity, which the other states use.
BTW to everyone who says Iowa is for growing corn, Iowa is in CNBC's top 10 states for business, Des Moines the top city for hound professionals by Forbes magazine and a neighborhood in Des Moines, Beaverdale (where I live) is in the top 50 prettiest neighborhoods in the United States. Yay Iowa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@1Makyo First digital computer (basis of modern computers) was made in Iowa. But either way, the point is basically moot because the computer had been in the making before this one, and before the one Babbage created. I know around the same time, Britain developed one and (I think but may be wrong) Philadelphia made one.
@msouth468 there is no giant lake next to him anywhere in the video that I saw. Also, sorry to say but Iowa DOES have lakes. Some of them rather large.
@rdrakken We have invented plenty. Take Pioneer Hi-Bred for example. Based in Johnston, IA, they produce many hi bred plants and crops to help feed the worlds population. And that is just 1 example I thought of off the top of my head.
Depends on what you consider personal computer. I consider a personal computer to be able to be purchased by the average American and stored in a bedroom. ISC (ISU now) did not make this. If you are talking about a machine that does computations ISC wasn't the first to do this either. That goes to Henry Babbage in 1910. What you know about Iowa now son?
@drummerjacob Actually, it's considerably more than my opinion, considering that the judges in question were voted out by popular referenda. Kinda qualifies as an expression of the voice of the people of Iowa, no?
@1Makyo Ha, yeah I understand the frustration. I'm a little more than just a general computer user, but working towards more. I'm currently in the military and am spending a fair amount of my free time learning programming and more about comp hardware etc. I do just want to say though, imagine my frustration at now being in the role of defending our nation when its freedoms are being stripped away. Not asking for a violin or anything, just saying you're not the only frustrated person
@farlcoon Sorry to burst your bubble but he said "your probably watching this on your computer, any guesses where it was invented. ISC did not invent the computer. Machines that did computations were around before ISC made their digital version. If he said that the digital computer was invented in Iowa then I would have nothing to say. Not the the ISC computer was even fully functional. I think you need help with google searches, or you could just know the history like me.
Something they should have mentioned in the video - George Washington Carver earned his degrees at Iowa State University. He was also ISU's first black professor. We're not just nice, we're egalitarian. :)
I'm from Iowa (Galva-Ida Grove-DSM) and most of these issues are not a plus.... Reference South Park episode about Iowa - very true; generally about 10 years behind the rest of the planet. If you don't believe me, I'll bet that KGGO plays an AC/DC song in the next 90 minutes....
+PhatKid68 Lie... Just one big lie, you wouldn't see us driving blocky cars... Why do you believe something in a stereotypical show? They making everything dramatic and they said Three Years. And we're not behind the whole entire world, that means we wouldn't even have cars (Yes, some counties don't have cars yet)
I get all your, valid, points so that said: Who are the people who support Mittens, pRick, and Mr. Frothy? Are they ringers brought in from Texass or Mississippi the way Utah jumped Prop 8 in Cali? Whassup with that? Cool clip.
IOWA ROCKS! We're not all rightwing fundamentalist conservatives, that demographic is just getting all the media attention right now. Remember- We pointed President Obama towards the Whitehouse in the last caucus! ____Proud Iowan
@TheMidwestAtheist: Well duh; of course every state has distributions on variables. I’m talking about Iowa’s central tendencies. And I lived in Cedar Rapids, a city that can only get away with considering itself sophisticated because it’s in Iowa, via the contrast effect with cornfields and hick towns. The only oasis of civilization there is the college town of Iowa City -- where, not coincidentally, is the state’s largest concentration of non-Iowans.
AWESOME JOB, Scott and Paul! Thanks for reminding us all why we love IOWA!!! I was born a "PK", lived on a farm for 4 years, and now work in IT at one of this country's largest banks. I forgot how funny and well done this was. Can't believe it's been 11 years since it came out.
This video just makes me giggle because of the way it's presented. Thank you, friend.
i'm from texas ... and i love the attitude in this. great concept for pointing out the virtues of iowa.
The working replica of the first electronic computer, invented at what is now Iowa State University in Ames, IA. that was on display in Iowa State’s Durham Center, has been moved to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. for the next 15 YEARS!!! I can’t believe they let this treasure go!
yeah, i was born in california, & right now i'm living in des moines. i love it here.
I love Iowa. I live in a big city, yet i can drive for 5 minutes to be in the beautiful quiet countryside. Could't ask for more out of a state.
From a South Carolinian to Iowans, great job! Very awesome.
@IowaFilmmakers UA-cam lets you edit the audio properties of uploaded vids in Find it in the "Video Manager". Under your profile.
awesome! god bless IOWA!! From Florida
In Iowa, we can do amazing things with corn. Proud to be born and raised in Iowa!!
Well said Scott. I grew up in the Dom. Rep. and attended ISU and I would have to say that the whole experience was very good. I'm actually glad I became an American through Iowa.
Like it!! I will definitely share this one.

This Makes Me Happy - Thank You 4 Making this U RoCk :) Shared
@colkestrel what are you talking about 'ISC?' are you meaning ISU?
According to Atanasoff, several operative principles of the Atanasoff-Berry Computer (ABC) were conceived by the professor in a flash of insight during the winter of 1937-1938 after a drive to Rock Island, Illinois.
Hell yeah! This video rocks! Shoutin' out from Ames!!!
@isefire Atanasoff was sitting in a Bar in Rock Island, Illinois when he came up with the computer concept
@Splashguytube Incorrect. From the wikipedia article on computers:

I sure learned a few things I didn't know about Iowa.
Awesome!

@mymovienerd you're thinking of Nebraska... but I'm guessing you don't travel to/through/or near the Midwest

@adambomb789 are you using a mechanical or digital computer today?
Proud to be born and raised in the Hawkeye state. Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.
"Iowa Scott" Rocks!!
@Arb1st ..thank you. i agree, you must be one with debate/ forensics experience, finally.
@1Makyo Yeah, I can understand that point of view. I was speaking out of more technicalities than anything since it seems like the computer has a long evolution cycle before hitting what we know today as computers.
@realgossamer Whoops . . . too bad UA-cam doesn't let you update a video.
@colkestrel it's isu(Iowa state university) not isc:)
0:56 omg sponge cake. I love sponge cake!

I'm proud to be from Iowa :)
Iowa, be nice to the nation and the entire globe and vote for Ron Paul.
Hm, I guess I might have to make my next trip to Des Moines.
@mugabugaYT What's wrong with Illinois?
Now that, is FUCKING AWESOME.

Thank you, media and politicians for visiting Iowa. Don't let the corn hit your ass on the way out.
@kfleming78 the PERSONAL COMPUTER was invented at Iowa State University
@24Kenyan I go there. Wonderful school :)
@rdrakken We have invented plenty. Take Pioneer Hi-Bred for example. Based in Johnston, IA, they produce many hi bred plants and crops to help feed the worlds population. And that is just 1 example I thought of off the top of my head.
@bomboy7, I didn't notice that.
Hey Scott... Hope u watched Rock Center tonight. Story about Iowa farmers, not the caucus.

Iowa all day !
i feel good cause i live in iowa ;)
How can there be twice as many likes fro this video as there are views?
@MrFerndel how about no democrats or republicans in the whitehouse? how about a non party member?
@1Makyo Ha, yeah I understand the frustration. I'm a little more than just a general computer user, but working towards more. Iowa rocks
@MrSuzanne88 The eastern part of Colorado is much flatter than the majority of Iowa, which is rolling hills.
Iowa.....fuck yea!
Something they should have mentioned in the video - George Washington Carver earned his degrees at Iowa State University. He was also ISU's first black professor. We're not just nice, we're egalitarian. :)
@tjgabrielson Awesome job Scott!!!
Des Moines seems nice. Wish you guys would have voted Paul in...
Dude, Newt Gingrich is leading in the polls there. Explain that.

"Cleaned up" doesn't include bleeping out "shit-ton" around the 0:50 mark, huh?
@667THRASHMASTER667 Coming from a guy whose screen name is THRASHMASTER?
Ron Paul 2012!

@juxaposed Doesn't feel like a joke, but rather a string of (very generous) "facts".
The sad reality was addressed, but you can still ignore it.
Well done. Being from Nebraska I can't stand the stereotype that comes with being from any state in the midwest.
IOWA ROCKS! We're not all rightwing fundamentalist conservatives, that demographic is just getting all the media attention right now.
Remember- We pointed President Obama towards the Whitehouse in the last caucus!

@tylerss314
According to the 'dislikes', Stephen G. Bloom has 11 youtube accounts.
@kfleming78 Actually the Nazis were working on mechanical computers while the digital computer was invented at Iowa State University.
Next time you fly over wave if you want, but just keep going!
@roawil1 Hasta Luego!
Maybe the best film of the year. LOL! He said sh+T ton!!! lol....California loves Iowa.
