The next stage is to write from those highlights a note with your own words and link it to your other relevant notes.
It builds a library of notes YOU have written, ready to be used if you want in your next writing project.
And even if you don't use it per se, the effort of reformulating and synthesizing the information will help understand and memorize it.

This method involves layering multiple rounds of summarization onto your notes, ultimately creating a comprehensive and efficient resource. Here's a breakdown of how it works:
**Layer 1: Capturing the Essentials**
- Begin by capturing the most important excerpts from what you're reading or listening to.
- Focus on the parts that are interesting, useful, personal, or surprising.
- These excerpts serve as the foundation for your summarization process.
**Layer 2: Bolding the Main Points**
- In the second layer, go through your captured excerpts and bold the main points.
- This step further distills the content, highlighting the key takeaways.
- With bolded main points, you can quickly grasp the essence of your notes.
**Layer 3: Highlighting for Long or Valuable Notes**
- Layer 3 is reserved for notes that are particularly long, interesting, or valuable.
- Use your notes app's highlighting feature (or underlining) to mark important passages.
- These highlighted sections should be concise, capturing the essence of the source.
This method saves time and energy, allowing you to navigate your notes swiftly and gather diverse ideas, making your knowledge more accessible and valuable.

Progressive Summarization is a "game changer" for me: for many years, I've been looking for a way to synthesize the books I read. I always make highlights and notes, but they are usually extensive. I even read "How to read a book", by Mortimer Adler (excellent book, by the way!), but even in it I didn't get a technique for what I needed.
Now, with Progressive Summarization, I have the best of both worlds: a very compact summary without losing depth.
Thinking about these "multiple layers" and the idea that we move between them, it made me have an insight about a constitutional law class that talked about human rights: some authors, speak "generations" of human rights (1st individual freedoms. ; 2nd social rights, ...). But it is preferable to say "dimensions" of human rights, as one does not exclude the other, they are cumulative. This is so that I also saw the layers of Progressive Summarization.
I have always seen this as over the top.
But, everyone works different, of course.
A source note with highlights is enough for me to use in my projects.

"Add a footnote to link the original." You are assuming that web page will be around in the future. Better to make a PDF copy (Print to pdf) And attach it to your note.
I agree. But as Thomas Richardson pointed it is not very scalable. Anyway, for things that I found very important to me, I do what you suggest
What about censorship or companies that no longer host this info. Hard drives are cheap. Save it all. Or make your own nextcloud to save it
@Thomas Richardson I only have less than 100 notes. I am just getting started. Why do you think it is not scale-able? Because of hard disk size?
Archiving the webpage on the Internet Archive is a good option too!

Hi Tiago, I really like this summary method? Do you create three seperate notes for each layer of summarisation (ie to just the distilled points) or do all summaries on one note? Why? Thanks.

Thank you Tiago for such wonderful tips. How do we summarize if the book needs images to better understand and connect the dots? Like photography learning books.
Save the best bits (take photos) and write why it resonates, and amend that description each time you come back
Since I already highlight articles in evernote, I think what I will do is reverse bold and highlight. And perhaps underline If the article with highlight is already in the evernote

Lots of different solutions per app, but most often I just write down bits of what I remember or like after or while I listen
Look up Tana and Readwise Reader. Both are 10/10 solutions for what you’re asking. For podcasts, look up Snipd.

Many notetaking apps (e.g. Notion) now offer AI-powered summarisation. Unfortunately these features have a fatal flaw: they don't take into account personal meaning, so they just distil the entire body.
An AI that looks for parts we have highlighted and summarised with heavy weighting on that would be absolutely killer. AI-powered progressive summarisation!

Interesting technique! However, it only works if you need to keep the source material, for example, if you're doing a literature review. If you need to absorb the material, make a summary, using your own words and connections, without consulting the source material.
Even though turning detailed notes into 'Progressively Summarized' notes or alternatively 'atomic' notes is useful,
what about the downsides.
There is loss of context,
and it also takes a lot of time,
especially if all we want to find and use those notes again later.
And if such refined notes are never published, what’s the point?
Maybe using tags and queries to find what we need more easily is a better way to avoid these issues?

Hmm. I have come to see highlighting a complete waste of time after reading How to Take Smart Notes from Sönke Ahrens.
I was hoping to find a technique to describe reading detailed material and summarizing it. Then stepping back and summarizing the summaries. And put that on repeat until you can't go any further without it being useless.
