HISTORY OF VAL'S
Half a century ago; Val's Rapid Serv an independent limited menu fast food take-out restaurant was born at 628 E. St. Germain in St. Cloud, Minnesota. An abandoned Pure Oil gas station was purchased and converted to a restaurant by Val and Kathleen Henning. The Henning's' opened Memorial Day (May 30) 1959 and ran the family business for the next 20 years. In 1979, when Val retired, Bill and David Henning purchased the drive-in and operated the fast food restaurant together until 1990. Presently the food service operation is owned by David Henning. In 2009 Val's Rapid Serv celebrated a 50 year anniversary and currently is 55 years old.
The official name Val's Rapid Serv was an attempt by area independent drive-in owners to organize a no cost regional franchise. The limited menus offered by the Rapid Serv restaurants gave them an instant identity and increased their purchasing power to compete with the other regional franchise restaurants. (Sandy's, Henry's, McCarthy's) When the national franchise chains began to expand the loosely formed regional franchise units fell apart and soon closed. (McDonalds, Burger King, Hardees) Many Rapid Serv restaurants were located in central Minnesota but Val's Rapid Serv is the only known survivor. Today the St. Cloud landmark is simply called "Val's".
Until the fast food market could be established in St. Cloud Val's was a summer seasonal business open for just 6 months each year. As the business grew so did the season length. When Val owned the business the season started February 22nd and ended December 24th. Bill and David opened February 1st and closed December 24th. Today Val's is enjoyed year around with daily hours of operation from 11 AM to 7 PM seven days a week. The tiny 490 square foot restaurant serves 250-350 hungry customers each day.
Before JFK was president, before the Vietnam War, before man walked on the moon, before personal computers, before video games, and before cell phones Val's been a fixture on St. Cloud's East Side. That's over seven decades of world changing events. Val's is a successful restaurant for who they are; not what they could be. The dining experience has been the same when your grandparents brought your parents; when your parents brought you and now when you introduce your family to Val's. That's the magic that keeps the Val's story alive. If today is your first visit or an annual stop it's always a pleasure to serve you at Val's. - Розваги
I've been known to drive from Woodbury to St Cloud just for a val's burger and a SHAKE! Great shakes, you missed out, now you gotta go back.
Me and my friends used to go to Val's once every two weeks back in high school man I miss that place
I live about 3 blocks from Val's and pass it every day on my commute, though I have never been there. I think it's time I check it out one of these times.
Omg! Val’s has REALLY good burgers & fries! Not the best EVER by any means but fun, simple and elegant! Went there all the time when I was a student at SCSU. #MemoryLane
I live right off Lincoln Street. I swing by vals every monday
Shoulda hit up gopher bargain center down Lincoln. It's been around about as long as Val's.
Love Val's fries and shakes!
Awesome! 50 years... so cool. Thanks Matt!👍🏼🤘🏼😎
I love the jazz you're playing while you eat.
I'm from St. Cloud and I live right by it. I can easily walk there. I haven't been there in a while lol.
looks like a cool little place with great food!
Its amazing how you can take something so plain and make it so exciting and fun to watch.
Thanks!
Mr. Matt, I think you should do an episode on the Cambodian Temple in Hampton Minnesota, I think it would be really cool!!
...when I get your alerts buddy I stop what I am doing, usually editing, and take my morning coffee break...this is a perfect use for alerts...for me...you know :)
I will never forget going to this place in my life! I think it was the second time I had gone to Minnesota since 7 years ago lol which I went in February, but there was a lot more snow lol, but was just a great moment and memory seeing new areas and trying good food!
Erls Drive in Roseau Mn. or Becks drive in Warroad MN. Kinda a long drive for you Matt but they are really cool and very delicious, they are both car hops... also while your up here swing over to Warren Mn and check out Sky Vu drive in movie theater...it's epic...a real peice of history
Beautiful work once again Sir! Im loving the drive by shots at the beginning. Reminds me of sanford and sons for some reason...not exactly sure why. But I love the shots none the less, very creative!
I have live in St.Cloud, MN for about 4 years and I have never eaten at Val's. We only live a few minutes away from this place.
I miss it so much living back in the twin cities
If I ever get up there, I'd go in a minute! I Love these places!
Man I miss Vals. They always oversalted the fries, but I still ate 'em. Dad would take me out there whenever we had a chance. The hilarious thing was that a Burger King was right down the road its on, but who the hell would go the burgerking instead of Vals while Vals was open for its working hours.
Ok I didn't know the burger king shut down before this video. I haven't been back home in forever.
@@jbreitz87 The Gateway Hotel across the street was also closed down and demolished. It's now a Caribou Coffee lol
@@chitan1362 lmao, I lived outta that hotel for a good two years while my dad started up his business. Why the hell he didn't just rent a damn apartment but drag me along out of state when I wasn't in school confused the shit outta me because just getting a rental would have been insanely cheaper.
It did end up being successful for the most part because he retired off of selling what he made, but damn was he dumb about spending what he had while making it.
I love their fry salt.
they have fabulous fries
Vlogging at Vall's! Good Morning Sir!
Vals was my cure on the weekends in college! Another great burger joint in MN is in the south east region in a tiny town called miesville. The restaurant is called Kings place bar and grill. Check it out, they have like 100 burger combos.
While Val's is THE location on the east side, in all fairness, Burger King made room for highway work to improve the Hwy 23/Hwy 10 interchange. Now it's easier to get to Val's !
Try Sparky’s in Anoka Minnesota. Great breakfast and burgers.
I always love to see these old joints going! Take that Burger King!
Lol. Me too. We know who the REAL Burger King is in these parts.
@@MattsRadShow Yes!
I miss that place
The popcorn salt an lowerys seasoning French fries are the best
Agreed! 😎👍
Matt you should check out 50's Grill in Brooklyn Park, not sure if you have been there before
I actually went there yesterday! It will be uploaded on Tuesday next week!
@@MattsRadShow awesome, I'm looking forward to seeing it.
I got married and Randall Minnesota there's a lot of cool things up Highway 10 good luck
It’s Val’s they must always have million more fries than you asked for
HECK YEA VALLLLS
Shame on you Sir, thats one tempting burger yo!
Any burger joint with root beer on its logo sign is up to nothing but a good time in my book!
Man that burger looked really good wrapped in wax paper cheese all over it now I know where five guys got putting fries in the bag
I’m hungry.
Time for a St Cloud Geocaching video!
This place is good, there use to be another good burger place over on the other end of town called burger time. Not sure if it's still there though?
It is 9/2/23... but they did close the one in moorhead
Hey Matt, are you going to go to GalaxyCon in Minneapolis in November? Tons of guests and it would make for a great vlog!
I got my tickets yesterday, I was thinking Matt's Rad Show at Galaxy Con would rock too
Not sure. But thanks for the heads up man!
@@MattsRadShow you're welcome!
The burgers need help. You need the works because the burger doesn't shine on its own. And don't go until after 11:30 a.m. because call-in and online orders get dibs.
This video, now your 3 blocks away from me..
Sometimes history is only blocks away from where one sleeps. Amazing life is.
@@EminenceFrontX5 I eat here often over the last 25 years.
did you ask about seasoning on fries. I've been going here since I was 16 and now I am 42 ..I have asked never will tell ya.. I think it's popcorn seasoning.. also you can call ahead and will have ready.. and can buy 26 dollars gift certificates for 20..
Pues. Ok. Cloud minnesota
Vals. If you need a dishwasher. Gime us a call
Triple Bacon Cheeseburger, small fry, and a blueberry cheesecake shake served with a blanket and pillow. Vals is a St. Cloud institution.
We usually eat at Five Guys if we plan on eating out for hamburgers and fries.
If an aint got special sauce or seasoning it's just a cheeseburger
Who goit. BestH burger on minneapolis. I doNt kNow. I belive burger King.
There is a McDonald’s and Wendy’s still in business 3 blocks away which are in fact better (doesn’t take much). Vals has cafeteria burgers with stale buns, and everything has enough salt to mummify your mouth
